Toward the end of our brief encounter he looked me in the eye and justified his entitled childish behavior by snidely saying "We're the black crows" and doing a hair flip. In ten years of touring he's the only "musician" I interacted with that ended in me shouting threats of violence at as he made a quick exit. Great concept and great production. Just wish that the vids weren't so American centric. Keep seeing stories from the same artists. And most are by-products of MTV, not overly talented or original, and don't have sustained critical acclaim. Occasionally, we get a vid on an already famous UK/Australian artist. Well Done Sir! I was/am a fan of both bands and had seen them both before Horde a few times but this 'beef' and had my own music show for years but somehow/someway this never caught my radar. It's crazy at times to have something both brought to your attention and riddle-outed both at the same time. As an old dude that still hasn't admitted to myself and still loves to get on the basketball court and baseball diamond Chris is someone I'd love to hoop with. Jaco Pastorius was notorious for thinking his ball-talent was on par with his bass-talent but sadly of course he and that Santana security bruiser .. well yeah, you know the story.... I'd have liked to have played with and against, same as Chris. Keep up the good work.
Recently listened to the CD that introduced me to Blues Traveler and really was the ONE cd of theirs i played over and over. If you've never listened to Their self titled 1990 album, you need to. Alone is one of my all time favs from anyone
At one show in Texas some years back Little Richard extended his concert and pushed the Blues Traveler's spot back to about 3:00 in the morning.. if I remember correctly the beer was still flowing when Popper started playing and I ended up with some religious book that Little Richard was passing out that night beforehand. Rock & Roll.
About 10 years ago a girl I was hanging out a lot with at the time got me to go with her and this other married couple we friends with. I don't mind a couple black crowds songs but what I didn't realize was this was a DOUBLE black crowes show. One acoustic and one electric with the same set list back to back. WAY too much black crowes for one night. Awful.
I love both of these bands. The most fun I ever had at a concert was a Black Crowes concert in a club in Grand Rapids, MI in the late 1990's. I have never seen Blues Traveler live which is sad. Glad that they seemed to patch things up in later years.
I've never met a fan of one that wasn't a fan of both. I was at the first 2 shows (St Lois and the next day in middle Indiana) and a few weeks later @ Pine Knob of the HORDE tour. Saw 2 night stand at the Fox Theater with the Crowes including backstage party till 3am. Chris WAS kindof a dick, with a pompous attitude toward everyone. Saw Blues Traveler @ Hill Auditorium Ann Arbor and after the show I went back to driving taxi cab. Drummer from BT got in and I dropped him at the Blind Pig, took his stage manager to the hotel to grab their junk and back to the Pig until closing time, had to get the whole band back to the tour bus by 2am sharp. One of the best concert nights of my life! They were genuinely fun to just hang out and have a few beers with. No aires of celebrity, no entourage. Was really bummed when Bobby lost the battle some years later.
I love The Black Crows BUT when I saw them about a year before this, they were the worst live band in history. The vocal were mostly replaced by yelling, cursing, and who the hell knows.
I'm sure Howard had some dudes in his repertoire that knew those two bands were feuding and booked them for the same morning anyway. Howard knew what he was doing.
By the looks of things Popper loves poppin' them Big Macs. Robinson may not have been Mr. Congeniality, but the Crowes certainly trashed BT when it came to the tunes.
Also, in addition to my previous comment. The mother hips are also on the Horde festival with the Black Crowes .the story is amazing between the mother hips some black Crowes . if you listen to Dean Delray‘s podcast he goes into detail about how the mother hips had influenced the Black Crowes . The black Crowes changed their look at the sound I don’t think there would be a black Crowes post Emorica era without the mother hips. Listen to part timer goes full and shoot out. They have released on Spotify... you can hear the influence
Jesse James, the motorcycle guy, was bodyguard for the black crowes back in the day. Pretty sure he called them assholes or something and said they're the reason he quit. Because of the constant drama.
@@aneblockgames Which town? I went to Alpine Valley and it poured rain 😂 Kenny Wayne Shepherd opened, I think. The next day was The Who & I can't remember the opener that day.
I'm just gonna be honest here, I REALLY like the Black Crowes (one of my Top 5 favorite bands back during the "roller-coaster" '90s). Was with them all the way up to 'Three Snakes and One Charm' (last album featuring their best lineup at the time) before jumping ship due to how increasingly volatile the Robinson brothers have gotten both in the studio and on tour after that. Finally reeled me back in 12 years later with their successful comeback album 'Warpaint' immediately followed by my all-time favorite BC release 'Before The Frost...Until The Freeze'. Gotta give credit to producer Paul Stacey and North Mississippi Allstars Luther Dickinson and Adam MacDougall for helping to breath new life into the Crowes' sound back then, albeit for a brief spell. And say what you want about older brother Chris, when he's "on the ball" he's still one of the better rock vocalists/frontmen I've seen and heard over the past 30 years. Shame he spent a good chunk of his earlier Crowes period actin' a complete fool instead of honing his craft like he finally did during the late-2000's when the band reformed for the 2nd time. As for Blues Traveler, only know of them from that one big hit they had back in the mid-90's ("Run-Around", was it?). I do distinctly remember not being all that impressed by them back then, sounded too much like a generic "Grateful Dead-wannabe" jam band to my ears (lol). Besides, frontman's harmonica playing left A WHOLE LOT to be desired come to think of it. Crowes, on the other hand, actually managed to endure and still put out enough quality material to get themselves inducted into the R&R Hall Of Fame when the time comes. ;-)
I don't know man. I actually like both bands, but Blues Traveler clearly has more musical talent... from a purely technical standpoint, there's not much the Crowes play that I couldn't replicate with a few days practice. I am nowhere near capable of accurately playing anything BT puts out.
They also had a big hit with “Hook”, and “But Anyway” got good radio play and had a music video. They are a popular jam band, and if you don’t like Popper’s style of harmonica playing, that’s ok, but that’s kind of like not liking how LeBron James plays basketball….
I truly dig the Black Crowes and have tickets to see them this year but if offered the choice of who I would rather hang out with I would definitely pick Blues Traveller.
I never cared much for either band, really, but this story is an interesting tale about how ego's can lead to poor opinions of another and that escalates into harsher criticism's before devolving into insults and name calling. It's a symptom of human behavior not limited to Rock and Roll or any musical genre in particular. Wars are fought over similar events. The world will be a better place once we introduce a world culture that puts these opinions to the side without letting them create a negative influence.
I listen to music Not thier personality....people who listen or don't listen to someone cause of the way they act out of the studio...are truly missing alot .
Years ago, a friend of mine was at a famous strip club in Vancouver enjoying himself. Unbeknownst to him, the Black Crowes had played the local dome there that very night. Lo and behold in walk a group of dudes looking like prototypical rock musicians. They walked up to my buddy, who was sitting up against the stage. A big dude says to my buddy, " hey, how about giving up your seat so my boss can sit there"? My buddy had no clue who they were says "why doesn't your boss ask me himself?" Chris Robinson says "where i come from, I'd have someone take care of you". My friend tells him "where he comes from , we handle our own affairs". Then my buddy asks who they're opening for... the entourage broke out laughing hysterically, a pissed off Chris turns on his heels and leavs in a huff. The big dude apologises to my buddy and says his boss can be "difficult".
Chris Robinson always struck me as a douche - Black Crowes had like 2 hits, they really tried to cop all the 70s bands instead of being original. All about the image too - even Jimmy Page thought they were jackasses.
I’d love to see a video on Unified Theory, the band that was two members of Blind Melon with a former Pearl Jam drummer and new lead singer. Their self titled album was great but they sadly broke up before they could release a follow up. The lead singer was the replacement singer for Live a while back too.
I went, I loved that concert... except Dave mathews and Peter Gabriel and blues traveler were on he ticket. dont remember the black crows but I was shrooming pretty good that day
Damn, DMB and Gabriel would have been the shit. And look at those artist's attitudes especially: way more famous than the Robinson Brothers, yet far more humble. It pays to not have an endless chip on your shoulder.

I've followed both bands since their inception and have seen both many times over almost 30 years. Young Chris was an absolute douche. He seems to have become a better person recently, at least in interviews. The guys in BT have always been nice guys and great to their fans in my experience. I've shared beers post show and other stuff on the bus with them and they were just down to earth nice people. Musically I'd take BT from 90-95 easily, especially the live shows. Unfortunately with their breakout album and then loss of underrated bass player Bob Sheehan they lost their identity as a rock band and have never really been able to recapture the magic IMO. The Blues Traveler shows from 92-95 were some of the best rock shows I've ever attended and I've seen many. The crowes hit some interesting musical patches in mid career when people stopped paying attention that I thought were sometimes brilliant frankly. What they've done recently with the firing of the rest of the band and evolution to a nostalgia act is hideous though. It shows a huge lack of respect to Gorman, and every amazing lead guitarist that has played for them. Not to mention a tour of playing the debut album front to back is about the last thing that most of their hardcore fans want to see from them. I think the overall career body of work is superior to BTs by a good bit. I like both bands but think the Crowes were probably more adventurous and talented as a unit while I'd much rather spend an hour hanging out with the guys from Blues Traveler.
All bullshit aside John and Chris are two of the coolest guys I've ever met. Sometimes shit's just the way it was back then. I'm just glad both bands are doing what they love, music.
The crowes were at their best from 1990 to 94, everything else after that was never the same, they got all hippy jam band-y. 1992-93 was their peak, they fucking rocked in those days.
@Violett Fem I don’t know how you missed them. They were ubiquitous whatever year in the late 90’s they dropped that popular album of theirs. I’m not a fan either but, you couldn’t walk on my university’s campus without hearing that damn harmonica. Every shitty sports bar, every stupid fraternity house, every overpriced, trendy clothing store in every shitty mall in North America. Ugh
Not knowing either man or the details, I can only say this: One band has (arguably) the greatest virtuoso harmonica player in music history, while the other is nothing more than a collective of tired rock and roll cliches who managed to fake their way through a nice career ripping off The Faces and The Stones. It's obvious to me who the real talent and original band is of the two.
I know Black Crowes are an awesome band, I've never seen them. I HAVE seen Blues Traveller twice, and I'm not a huge fan, but I thought they were incredible live. I missed the HORDE the year both these bands were there (Morphine! RIP Mark Sandman), but I saw the first one with Phish, Bela Fleck, Spin Doctor, etc., and the last one(?) with Primus (they suck!!), my favorite band. That was the year BT was back headlining and it was in NJ, so they were on fire!
I've seen them struggle exactly twice..in 37 shows I've been to..Nashville summer stage on the river and in Raleigh opening for tedeschi/trucks.. almost every other one was fantastic

I never liked either of these bands, but back in my musician days I had one interaction with Robinson and the guy was full throttle asshole mode from the fist second. Toward the end of our brief encounter he looked me in the eye and justified his entitled childish behavior by snidely saying "We're the black crows" and doing a hair flip. In ten years of touring he's the only "musician" I interacted with that ended in me shouting threats of violence at as he made a quick exit.
Lol, funny you should mention LeBron because I honestly DON'T like how he plays basketball either.

I enjoyed this tale much more than the video I just watched! 🤣

Chris Robinson always struck me as a douche - Black Crowes had like 2 hits, they really tried to cop all the 70s bands instead of being original. All about the image too - even Jimmy Page thought they were jackasses.

Now Gorman is also estranged from The Black Crowes.

The crowes were at their best from 1990 to 94, everything else after that was never the same, they got all hippy jam band-y. 1992-93 was their peak, they fucking rocked in those days.

I don’t know how you missed them. Ugh
It seems to me, the people conducting the interviews were throwing fuel on the fire. Which is pretty lame.
Chris Robinson was just mad that John popper didn’t suck live like Chris did back in the day lol
Great story. I like The Black Crowes very much, but some people told me they're not good playing live. Is it true?
I've seen them struggle exactly twice..in 37 shows I've been to..Nashville summer stage on the river and in Raleigh opening for tedeschi/trucks.. almost every other one was fantastic
