It's stunning, mercurial, dark, menacing, dissonant, melodic all in one Kristin Hersh is one of the best singer songwriters of the last 30 years Criminally underrated
Fantastic! This is the first time I’ve seen/heard these songs… Been on a Kristin/Muses kick lately, absorbing whatever I can find on TH-cam, playing the old albums etc. - definitely gotta seek out this one and anything else I might have missed in the past few years!👍💙🎸☮️
No one beats Throwing Muses and KEXP sound people should also get credit for this engineering for all these bands. TM being a tough cookie. God bless Kristin's guitar playing and tone
I don't know why I haven't seen this before now. This was recorded on my Birthday in 2014. I absolutely love this band. Reminds me of college years back in Lawrence KS . Damn where did the years go. University was my favorite album from these guys
yeah, they were raging indie youth about your mid fortys or so, anyway I LOVE the fact that you love this + make sure you listen to "pearl" by them. far out dude!!!
Extraordinary as always. Saw these guys in Charlottesville circa 1996 and David's drumming just blew me away. How powerful to still stand up and just freakin' say Yes, we're still Throwing Muses! Don't let Kristin fool you, so intelligent and expansive....the commentary here is so much more revealing than the music - love you guys!!!
I wish the world had corporate radio that could promote the heck out bands like the Throwing Muses, Belly, Tanya Donnelly, Yo La Tengo, The Feelies, the Wedding Present, Galaxie 500, Red House Painters, No Means No, Pixies (NOT Doolittle), Bill Laswell (The Master of most Modern Music), Spacemen 3, Spiritualized...
What about the Breeders? I know they had their day on corporate rock radio, but their subsequent stuff is just as good. Kim Deal has never put out a bad song. Pixies are way overhyped, they don't need any additional "promotion".
She is so articulate and honest, on top of being an amazing guitarist and songwriter, but it's the gritty collaboration of the three of them that rocks my world. Kristin's solo material is phenomenal, as well. Once I get drawn into their gravitational field, I am happy to stay.
I go through periods of time that I get away from them... and everytime I come back, Kristin recaptures my heart. Is that odd to say? Maybe. Creepy. Perhaps. But it's impossible not to get INTO her music and feel like you're swept into it. I LOVE this new stuff and I'm hooked again. Never have seen her but as many shows as I've been to, I feel like it's about freaking time... Obviously, this trio here is the core and it's the presence. Love the videos out with her & Tanya, sends chills up my spine. Great to relish and just hope they make music as long as they can because there's fire and passion here. Amazing.
I've played in heavy metal bands my whole life but I've always listened to a wide catalog of artists and I agree wholeheartedly. When an artist is true and has a vision and writes from the heart then they will always relate to most everyone and their music will more often than not transcend boundaries.
***** Throwing muses are a great band. But This Mortal Coil was the name given to a "Compilation album" by various 4AD artists'' in the 1980's and 1990's. So no actual band called "this mortal coil" : on the albums were such diverse artists' as Pixies, Throwing muses, Dead can Dance (my favourite 4AD band) , Cocteau Twins, Dif Juz and many many more)
I really (really) love TM's early music, but at this point in time it feels like Purgatory/Paradise is their masterpiece. It took two years to get it but once I did I was swept away; now I always have to let it play all the way through, uninterrupted.
Every bassist in Throwing Muses has been a phenom and definitely not ignored in the realm of Throwing Muses. Bernard filled massive shoes of Leslie. No two bassists are alike and Bernie is just amazing in his own right.
Lifelong Throwing Muses & Kristin Hersh fan here. Purgatory/Paradise is so good. I just wished they'd played Slipper Shell on this, but I'll take what I can get.
They came from a great time to be alive in Boston - from Human Sexual Response to Morphine to Throwing Muses - and a ton more from the late 70s to mid 90s
Hands down Kexp has the best sound engineers in the world
Amen to that, Sounds Fantastic :-)
Their guitar parts are so cool. Why was this never talked about in guitar magazines?
Agreed. She never plays 'solos' but Kristin's playing (which is a unique combo of rhythm & lead) is completely unique.
Guitar magazines focus almost exclusively on cliched "hero" guitar players aka "wankers"
It's stunning, mercurial, dark, menacing, dissonant, melodic all in one
Kristin Hersh is one of the best singer songwriters of the last 30 years
Criminally underrated
@Tony Lewis no shit.
True
The past 40 years now.

Yeah.Tone for days.
In a better world this band would have gotten huge by the late 80s and stayed that way until today.
That's okay, they'll have to be our dirty Little secret
But then they probably would have changed into a different band or maybe not been together now.
Yes - would they be a better band? I doubt it. Let’s keep it under our hats…
Great set. These guys are on fire. Thanks KEXP.
I don't know why I haven't seen this before now. This was recorded on my Birthday in 2014. I absolutely love this band. Reminds me of college years back in Lawrence KS . Damn where did the years go. University was my favorite album from these guys
I am in love with this band! Thanks for the turn on. New to me, but I am only 72....
yeah, they were raging indie youth about your mid fortys or so, anyway I LOVE the fact that you love this + make sure you listen to "pearl" by them. far out dude!!!
Same.
I'm only 66 ...
One of the greatest song writers ever, genius!
Incredible band. Her songwriting is stellar. Just recently saw her play solo. 👍🏻
Extraordinary as always. Saw these guys in Charlottesville circa 1996 and David's drumming just blew me away. How powerful to still stand up and just freakin' say Yes, we're still Throwing Muses! This band helps me forget about my diseases and ill health, and my football club being shite, they have always been THAT good.
Could be worse...you could be Welsh
Kristin at her fiercest; I love this, thanks for sharing.

that is the radio station in my head. sadly there are few actual statiions with the imagination
i agree, but why not doolittle? its still a great album! :P
Also Luna, the offshoot of Galaxie 500. Oh, and I'll add Stereolab to the list.
4 months later. I still agree with you 100%

Damn, Kristin sounds so good

Colour me HAPPY! Thank you KEXP and the wonderful Throwing Muses!!
Wow. Throwing Muses still got it. 90’s vibes all the way!
Such a powerful voice. Still rocking. Love her.
throwing muses and this mortal coil have to be my most favourite bands singed to 4AD. i love Kristin Hersh and David Narcizo so much.
***** Throwing muses are a great band. But This Mortal Coil was the name given to a "Compilation album" by various 4AD artists'' in the 1980's and 1990's. And Bernard Georges...at least, for me.
Hear the first chords and SMILE........#lovininpeace x
6 people apparently prefer Nickelback or some shit.
More like 7 old farts hitting the wrong button.
I really (really) love TM's early music, but at this point in time it feels like Purgatory/Paradise is their masterpiece. It took two years to get it but once I did I was swept away; now I always have to let it play all the way through, uninterrupted.
This version of Static is absolutely awesome!
God, I love her.
Buzz off. She's mine!
Bass player completely ignored.
And he has been in the band since 1992.
Every bassist in Throwing Muses has been a phenom and definitely not ignored in the realm of Throwing Muses. Bernard filled massive shoes of Leslie. No two bassists are alike and Bernie is just amazing in his own right.
Lanakila heh, you forgot Fred Abong. Bassist on Real Ramona and in 50FootWave
Yeah! Would it have been too much to actually say anything to the bassist...?
Baffling to me. WTH
@@craigzinga He's a bass player. He's used to it.
Some nice tones coming out of that Strat.
God damn, I adore Kristen's voice!
I got to see them at the 9:30 Club in DC in 92, great show.
Kristen Hersh's a Goddess of Indie Music ...straight up
Lifelong Throwing Muses & Kristin Hersh fan here. Purgatory/Paradise is so good. I just wished they'd played Slipper Shell on this, but I'll take what I can get.
throwing muses, and the breeders, the two best bands ever.
great performance ! Also great band, if i only could play bass on a song of theirs:)
Excellent!
Absolutely amazing band absolutely masters 😊
They're still at it :-)
Love these guys so much!!!!
❤️ Kristen and the Muses 4ever
super cool
The announcer rather launched in suddenly on the gang... that was pretty funny to see how well they blasted into their tune after that.....
just feel they are wonderfull
THIS IS SICK!!!
que som fóda...bom demais
wonderful
Very good!!!
Love "Sunday Venus" bass figure.
Amazing. Wonderful! :D
She sounds like Chrissie Amphlett now. The Real Ramona belongs near the very top of the greatest albums of the 90s.
Music,music..no talk!!!
Rock & Roll ♥️
I’m from French founded Detroit. We have a nearby small town, Milan. Pronounced MY-lan. Maybe a French thing?
Kristin is a freaking badass!
really like that hollow distortion on the guitar
Finally a good band.
stellar
GREAT!
They came from a great time to be alive in Boston - from Human Sexual Response to Morphine to Throwing Muses - and a ton more from the late 70s to mid 90s
Straw dogs lyres gang green too
EFING AWESOME!
MILAN!! what an AMAZING song. kristin still rules
💔
Some of these Purgatory/Paradise songs hit different since her and Billy's divorce. "Can't stand the heat, get out of here"
Wow!!
WoW
Mine own muse... (BY APPOINTMENT).
My goto band
HAWT DAMN
OH YEAH!!!!!!!!!
dirty guitar sound, nice performance.
Five "dislike" this? Ha! Ridiculous.

It's kind of weird that they barely put the camera on the bass player, right? Am I the only one that noticed this?
Great band great songs but needs a lead guitar, some solos blasting, would love to help them with that
Pfft. Kristin is a lead guitarist. She plays a solo on every song.
Actually I think Tanya's officially retired from music now...
+percy blakeney
She's definitely not.
sounds like stone temple pilots
+punkjazz88 jesus christ
??
sorry, just being a dinosaur i suppose. the comparison seems like sacrilege to me. nothing against stp.
No, he's right -it is sacrilege.
Stone Temple Pilots? The only band name that's worse than Toad the Wet Sprocket. They can't touch the originality and genius of the Throwing Muses.
Sometimes you need to curb check your "homoknowitallism" Take it from me, 9:33.
