1:32 actually Louis Rossmann doesn't recommend the Quick 861-DW anymore. Not because of it's performance, but rather in relation to the poor sales service from Quick when he was selling them. They are a great station from my personal perspective but Louis now recommends and sells the Atten ST-862D

@@youchooby definitely the thermal camera is invaluable. I periodically find shorted caps on Macbook logic boards using appropriate voltage injection and the Seek thermal Pro.
I wonder if thats why they have a timer for how long its been running. This chip req's x amount of time at this temp/flow. Or maybe you need at least X time because of the giant ground plane on this 4 layer board. Designed for the lowest common denominator or the person who insists on a protocol for everything.
Muting the mic while it's in the stand is a good safety feature, really! Considering how often regular smart speakers mishear things off the telly, I would NOT trust one that has the capability to start a house fire just because it thought it heard someone say "500C, sleep mode off" or whatever
I think the voice stuff is "buggy" because you have the handle in the stand. I could actually see the voice thing being usefull and not just a gimmick. Say, you are trying to remove a BGA chip. You have the airgun in one hand, your tweezers in the other hand. The chip is not comming off, so you want to bump the temp up by 50 C. Just tell the station to go 50 C up and Bob's your uncle :-)

Jamicon's basic 105°C TK series is fine for basic jobs, I used it a lot for CRT TV repairs and they never failed, even if the TV was in daily use for 15 more years after the repair. Their 85°C SK series is also fine, but their 105°C series is so cheap, no point buying the 85°C stuff in small quantity, like for repair jobs. But I see their 85°C capacitors a lot, fitted by the manufacturer in 15-40 years old gear, and they are usually fine, unless they are right next to a hot heatsink or power resistor, or operating at high ripple currents. There were a lot of cheaper CRT TVs that were built solely with 85°C capacitors, sometimes all Jamicon, and they were fine for about 10-15 years of daily use.
I’m fine with the ole tried and true original. Rossmann put it through its paces and it was always good enough for him so it’s good enough for me. Literally all I need or want it to do, it does. No need for anything updated or with more weird options.
I'm loving the general look and feel quality wise on this thing. It feels like they even stepped up their game compared to the past. A joy to see! Teapo makes some fine caps too, so do Jamicon under Teapo nowadays. I don't actually mind the heatsink next to the caps. The triac won't get nearly that hot. The heatsink is on there due to the lack of active cooling and needing *something*, and because of its physical size. But this device would've been more than fine with a PCB mounted triac if they had the space! The timer sounds useful for timing how long a circuit has been under heat for if you've got it in a stand. Rather than needing to set a separate timer, or managing to lose track of time.
I have used Jamicon before, they are pretty ok for the price. Of course as for any company quality would still depend on the series. So, not really much to say there.
What's really bad about all these QUICK 861s (including my 861DW) is the complete lack of special nozzles (square or slit for SOP/QFP). Those available on the official website are very expensive.
Soft power switch is about the only thing (other than the voice stuff) I don't like about it. I'd be tempted to put a real power switch on the front of the unit. Might splash for one though as my 861D ripoff unit is on it's 2nd element.
@@electrodacus It's a soft power switch, even though it's latched. The software is monitoring whether the button is pressed in or not. The soft power refers to the way it's switching the mains on or off, not to the exact button or interface element you interact with. :)

Quick 957DW+ flickers the lights in my shop. Been meaning to add a NTC thermistor to it to try and limit the current spikes. That 861 has a beautiful display. Spotted a NTC on the PS board too.
For all the digital stuff it can do it doesn't have pre-programmed steps to raise and lower the temperature at specified speeds or the ability to be controlled or control a SMD rework station. This is needed for delicate boards that can delaminate during the heating and cooling process.
Perhaps the voice control is interrupted by the unit going to standby. My guess is that you lift the handle and then give it voice commands. Just a guess.
I think it is related to that stand. Once it is in stand it doesn't behave normally and always going to sleep mode. I expect once you would take it out it would work normally..
I personally would have been interested in the performance at the lower end of the air flow settings with small diameter nozzles since I don't want to blow around small components. Does it still produce constant air flow with a constant temperature? How low can it go on airflow?
Voice control is not a bad idea because you are usually using both hands when you want to make an adjustment - one holding the wand and the other some tweezers and a component. A better option would perhaps be a remote foot switch which could control temperature and airflow.
I prefer stations with the compressor in the handle. They are slightly bulkier than the conventional ones , but there is just a thin electric cord and no strain from the large diameter tube. The overall handling is much easier. It is a HS700-ST from Stahlwerk, and the footprint is one half of the conventional ones.
I have the none pro version and one thing i'd like to have is a smaller fan , I can't set the fan speed higher than 10/120 before it starts yeeting smd components of the board. Otherwise I'm happy with mine.
Having just toyed with brazing automotive air con tube using low temp flux cored brazing rods, and having succeeded in melting said tube too easily, I wonder has anyone used a 500 degree hot air gun for the job? The low temperature brazing rods typically flow and bond at lower than 500 degrees, while the aluminium tube melts at a lot higher. Using a gas flame is brutally fast at melting the tube for amateurs like me.

I know people recommend the pinecil for your first iron... but I think I am more interested in having a designated area with a station. Just who I am. Also the Pinecil with the power supply is like $50 ish dollars.
Don't, Quick soldering irons are not worth the money. Their hot air stations are very good but look somewhere else for soldering irons. Dave made a review of TS11 (EEVblog 1645).
I always thought hot air was hot air till I got a decent one at work.....I went from burning boards to successfully reballing phone cpus, I always thought I just lacked skills. Anyone starting out please don't make my mistake and buy some cheap machine that seems to pump out hot air , my old machine was okay for charging ports and occasional hdmi replacement but the new one blows more hot air than a politician on election month!

Why does the max temp in the graph mode go to 1000*C, when you can only set it up to 550? Yeah with overshoot lets say it would get hotter, but not 450*C hotter. Is it because of the fahrenheit ? EDIT: 550*C is 1022 *F, so for fahrenheit it would go out of the scale. Conclusion - it's for neither.
a chinese copy of the old model (861) can be bought on ali for around 160US$, it works fine. It's functions the same as the new model, it has less buttons which makes it easy to operate. For me as a hobbyist the choixe is easy but it looks less fancy...
Any time I see Taepo or Jamicon caps, I don't even need to find or turn on the ESR meter, they're just replace on sight - they're always gone high ESR - complete trash

I see them in 20-40 years old CRT TVs and monitors, and the 105°C Jamicon TK series is usually fine, except when it's wedged between hot heatsinks and power resistors. Even the 85°C SK series is fine if it's not in a high heat stress area. There are CRT TVs built solely with 85°C Jamicon/Teapo/Yageo/G-Luxon caps, and often the chassis never fails, because the tube fails sooner, after 15+ years of daily use. I have a 2011 HP desktop, PSU filled with Teapo SC series, no failure, and it was an office machine for ~6 years with a lot of use, I also used it a lot in the last 7 years since I own it. I built a PC for a relative in about 2012, that PSU also has Teapo capacitors, and it is a gaming PC in heavy use ever since, with the same power supply, only the fan was replaced.
Actually it's a handy feature to adjust it without interrupting the job. Not sure but it might turn off because Dave did not remove the handpiece form the stand. How it's supposed to turn heat on when it should not be heating to begin with?
When did quick ever turn the heat on while the nozzle was set on its base plate and what made you think it would do that, when you gave it a voice command to do so in the same scenario? This is a poor review, it is a review of figure it out as you go… very unsatisfactory!!! 🤦♂️
I've been meaning to get a better station, so good and quantitative reviews are super appreciated right now. Voice control though, wank wank Personally, I do like the shallower but taller box. Bench space in height is much more plentiful than in depth out here!

I guess it's there for a reason. Considering there is voice control, it should be running some OS and thus cold boot should be annoyingly slow.

They probably had to leave out useful functions in order to have room for the voice control crap.

A few years back I got a cheap (~$40) 858D Hot Air station... Still works great without too many Bells and Whistles.
