26:15- Suraj nailed it 100%. A lesser show would not have gone to the lengths they did her to show just how much of a true badass the Naomi character is. And not by minimizing any other character. She stands on her own and that is one reason why this show and all it’s characters are amazing imo.

Mikey makes a good point about Karal and Naomi, and how quickly love turns to hate. A change in perspective can feel like a betrayal when it pits us against the ones we love, and that betrayal cuts way deeper when it comes from someone close to us.

Why was Naomi counting before going in the unpressorized compartment?
There is a limited amount of air in the pressurised compartment and whenever she was going to the unpressorised part the air was lost in that double door small room connecting the two parts. U can see Naomi reading the dimension of the room and doing a mental calculation on how many trips she can take back and forth before the air becomes too thin to breathe.
So Naomi had only limited amount of trips, we can see her getting slower and getting worse after each trip because she wasn't getting the same amount air as before since, the air is continously being lost after each trip.

    1. Naomi's scenes in this episode reminded me of that movie in a lot of ways, and
    2. The author of The Martian and the authors of The Expanse have agreed that the events of The Martian occurred in the history of The Expanse setting and Mark Watney is unofficially considered the first citizen of Mars. There's even a mention in one of the episodes of a ship named after him.

The writers have done a few flashbacks during series -
    1. Epstein Drive - the episode had a series of flashbacks related to the creator of the drive.
    2. Fred Johnson's past - we learn about Anderson Station and why Fred Johnson gave up on the UN military in support of the belt.
    3. Julie Mao/Lionel Polansky - story of how she Julie ended up on the Scapuli and eventually died at Eros station was also told in a series of flashbacks.
    4. The story of the Nauvoo - when Miller was talking to one of the Mormon's about the Nauvoo, I believe there were both flashbacks and for-telling in that sequence.
I can't remember if there were any others. But the series is not free of them. Thanks for sharing your comments, I am a huge fan too. Love the series. And yes, I agree, Naomi IS a badass. 😀

My guess on Naomi's prognosis in the long run:
    - Godawful sunburn on the sun-wards sides of her face and hands will recover like normal awful sunburn, but it will give rise to a very large risk of future cancer. Not as high risk as Holden, but still bad. She'll probably eventually have to have one of those anti-cancer implants.
    - Godawful lung, throat, nose, ear and eye irritation: That's probably what's going to hurt so much in the short run, and it might take a long time for her to not be in pain without heavy anti-inflammatory drugs.
    - She might also have some lung and diaphragm damage, but I expect the future medicine of The Expanse can deal with that.

One thing to understand is that the damage to Earth isn't *that* bad. It's large but localized damage. Earth as a biosphere could survive it just fine. This is not like killing off the dinosaurs. The problem is that *humanity* was fragile. Earth's socialist economy was barely holding on -- half of humanity was unemployed and kept alive by a complex system of production and services. The impacts themselves did not kill off that many people relative to the population as a whole, but they damaged the infrastructure and supply lines that people depended on. The shift in weather won't be that long, but it's causing crop failures that humanity cannot absorb.
It's just like what Prax described in season 2 -- it's a cascade failure. Earth was hanging on with a complex global system of artificial support that could not handle the damage done to it. Unlike on Ganymede, nobody is gonna run out of air, but they *are* gonna run out of food, and even clothing (remember most people are wearing disposable paper clothing)

I believe that Marco is not over Naomi and it kills him to think that she would actually kill herself, than stay and ultimately come back to him. Because no matter what he said he had no intention of spacing her or letting her go.
(After all this guy kept tabs on her where abouts and life away from him!)
I think he also wanted to make sure of what happened, because he also knows what she is capable of so he needed to know she died and didn't find away to muck up his plans again.
Another thought I have been having for the reason he has no tattoos, was so he could blend in with the inners while worked on a way to distroy them... amass wealth and contacts... If I recall he was a famous sling shooter in his youth, that's how he was able to plot the trajectory for the rocks to hit earth.
But I digress... He really can not stand the fact that he can not have Naomi, she is his soft under belly...

Correction, Bull was in book 3, not book 2.
    Book 3 Behemoth's Senior Officers:
    Captain = Ashford
    XO = Michio Pa
    Chief of Engineering = Sam
    Chief of Security = Bull
While in the show, they were Drummer, Ashford, Naomi, Diogo (probably, not really mentioned) respectively.
So, Bull's story was mostly Drummer's in S3 (although not 100% similar). Book Ashford was rather one dimensional antagonist aka dickhead, while S3 Ashford was built rather grey and then he redeemed himself in S4.

They said in the show that they were looking for Inaros using the drive signatures that "Avasararal's sources" provided to Earth (the same ones that Bobbie provided to Holden), so they ARE in contact with Bobbie. Sldo, it was considered a "fair fight" if Earth and Mars got into a war, with Earth having more ships than all of Mars, but Martian ships being more advanced. Mars can't have given Inaros all their ships, so the calculus is the entire UNN Navy (but weakened because resupply of those ships will be harder versus some fraction of the former might of the Martian Navy now controlled by the Free Navy (but who also have limits on large scale;e repair and resupply of these shipsbecause Mars still has all the best engineers (who know how that advanced tech works) and many supplies, especially food, will be very limited in the Belt for a long time to come because Ganymede is gone and Earth isn't sending supplies.
Who wins in that fight? I'm not sure, but for the moment you have to imagine the UN Navy didn't lose much when the asteroids hit and they've has a couple years to recover after the war with mars, so they are at full or near full strength until their supplies dwindle.
Ediit: Also, technical issue: Whenever Mikey spoke, for the first started to speak, his volume was MANY decibels higher than the rest of you, then it went down. Maybe he was shouting to avoid you speaking over him, maybe his mic volume is set too high and then is auto leveling as he speaks, but it makes for a bad audio situation where I wanted to change the volume every time he spoke, but lowering it would make the rest of you inaudible.

No actually, that's what they got wrong in the show since she was shown to fall as soon as she got into the airlock of the float.
They also royally screwed up big time showing her struggling to lift up that metal grate to get that tool from under the floor.
Why would she struggle to get it out of the ground?
The mass of it is meaningless in a Zero 'g' (or microgravity) environment and a non-thrust(ing) ship.
A small woman could "lift" a 200 pound metal grate with just a little force since she's not fighting against (any) gravity).
But I guess they just did it for dramatic purposes.

I don't like the way Okasa is getting cozy with Karal and not advising Drummer about their conversations. I'm afraid Okasa is going to betray Drummer for the same reason Cyn betrayed Naomi: "For the sake of the family." Drummer told Fred that she only drinks when she's angry.
I'm not sure what Alex and Bobbie will make of Naomi's changed message. It would certainly reduce their urgency to rescue Naomi, but it might also reduce their sense of caution as they approach. She's going to have to do something more to keep them from making an immediate docking attempt.
I think the Sec-Gen is really leaning toward Delgado's nuclear option. Both of them are feeling a need to spin up their male egos.
Earth has turned into the kind of "simple complex" system as Ganymede was. Even before the rocks struck, Earth no longer had the depth of ecological variation that it once had, and was vulnerable to cascading environmental system failures.

He lost consciousness about 12-15 seconds afterward and regained it about 30 seconds in after his suit repressurized partially.
Additionally, a guy who did a super high-altitude skydive (who had to wear a pressure suit due to the low pressure up there) lost pressurization on one of his hands, and developed a hand ebullism (essentially gas diffusing into the tissues after boiling out of blood etc) very similar to Naomi's in this episode. It's kind of interesting that Drummer is sort of a mix of Sam, Pa, Bull and the actual Drummer character. But then when they decide to bring Bull into the story, he's taken over for where Drummer is supposed to show up in the books.
Still, I think they've been smart about condensing characters, and they manage to keep the essence of what's happening pretty darn close for a show adaptation. I'm pretty satisfied with it - the show doesn't attempt to replace the books, nor the books the show, and in each one you get interesting insights that are harmonious. (I guess that's the value you get when the authors of the books work closely on the show.)

It's not just burns, Naomi suffers from Decompression Sickness.
Based on what I read, that actually sucks, really a lot.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decompression_sickness
Each season had its own type of story, right?
Last season was a Western, this season includes a fair amount of post-apocalyptic sci-fi. :)
Micky has some good insight into Marco's planning, I think.
"If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles." -Sun Tzu.
However, to answer his question, I think the admiral has let his emotions sway his judgement.
Punishing the enemy's civilians is only a valid choice when you know they fully support their leaders -- and that's not clear.
The other thing is, Inaros isn't a real leaders, backed by systems and institutions.
He's a warlord, and that means he only enjoys the support he does, as long as people think he's winning.
As soon as he suffers a real reversal, his own people would turn against him.
So, they don't have to beat all the Belters, or even attack all the Belters.
What they have to do is take military objectives that Marco can't afford to lose, that are the centers of Belter society.
But *take them*, don't destroy them and, when you have them, make sure to treat the Belters, there, reasonably decently.
To fight a terrorist such as Marco is like punching water. The force of the punch just causes it to flow elsewhere.
The way to force an engagement is to take things Marco cannot afford to lose -- not destroy them -- and make him come to you to either prevent its capture, or to try to take it back.
Also, talk to Holden before you do anything.
He's the guy on the spot, with the latest info.

One thing I would point out about Delgado is at 20:47 you suggest "hit somewhere else" but thats the problem with fighting Marco and the OPA. They don't where uniforms, they don't have military stations. There is no OPA version of Deimos for the Earthers to bomb, the Belt has no military stations with purely military personnel on them. Wherever they attack there is going to be civilian casualties. Plus the Earthers, including Delgado aren't exactly in a calm mood right now, the Belters (and Marco claims to be speaking for all the belt) just killed Billions of innocent civilians, and now refuse to show themselves. Most of the UN military has probably lost family in this. I'd be out for Blood too, and I think Delgado clearly is trying to make up for his mistake earlier in not standing up and speaking out, he feels guilty.
Personally I don't agree with his suggestion though, firstly obviously because of the massive civilian casualties. But I also don't think it is effective in achieving the UN's military goal. They state they wanna lure Marco out, but we've seen the power of these sort of nuclear strike weapons in season 2&3 when the UN tried to eliminate the Martian stealth missiles. Its basically impossible to defend against. That won't convince Marco out, because he can't do anything about it, and it isn't going to lessen his support, both due to civilian casualties and his inability to stop it. The better military move is assaulting one of these bases directly. This would lower civilian casualties, but its also a call out to Marco. Its challenging him to battle and saying "come on then, are you gonna defend your people?". With an actual assault he has no excuse for not defending his territory, and the UN fleet should still be superior.

There's one small tiny problem with that plan that even Marco himself acknowledge even if tacitly.
Belters can't exactly make it, much less thrive on the new worlds on their own without the help of Inners (for the most part) due to the small problematic fact that most of the planets accessible through the ring gates are standard M-class planets with similar atmospheric pressure and 1g gravity to Earth.
Most Belters don't have the physiology to survive on or adapt to these planets as we saw from Naomi's attempts in Season 4, and for the few that do, there simply aren't enough of them to sustain the sort of massive export operation they would need to shift large amounts of the live soil back to the Belt (and don't forget that most of those planets were FAR from their home ring gates as well as our gate - you're talking return journeys of several months to a few years length roundtrips).
They would still need the help of Inners even in the new worlds to help them harvest that live soil - Inners that you've just pissed off by destroying their home planets.
Many have speculated that Marco's actual full plan involves destroying Earth with the protomolecule but giving ring primary ring access to the Martians who would then be the ones harvesting the live soil for both the Belters and the Martians (back on Mars) - since they are better able to adapt to the new worlds than Belters.

I'm glad that you like Bull as a replacement for Alex because unless he does a 180 change in personality, I would not want him aboard the Rocinante, much less in the pilot's chair. Shoving another entitled Earther into the middle of the family aboard the Roci is just a disaster.

    • @stevovimy
      @stevovimy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think calling him entitled is a bit unfair. We don't know much about his background, but being from earth shouldn't be a prerequisite for entitlement. Julia Mao is probably the most privileged person in the show, but also one who has suffered the most in some ways. What about Amos? Just a thought anyway haha.

    • @LeeCarlson
      @LeeCarlson 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@stevovimy I seriously doubt that Julie Mao would have ever referred to Belter's as "skinnies," nor would she have shown the derision of Belters that Bull has demonstrated from the outset. I realize that his actions/attitudes were designed to act as a red-herring prior to Sakai's betrayal in Tycho, however, nothing he has done to date shows any difference, and his exchange with Monica leads me to believe that he is actively planning to mutiny if Holden goes after "his girlfriend."

Considering the turn they engineered for Ashford, I don't doubt they could do the same thing with Bull. The only mark against him replacing Alex is that the crew wouldn't be quite right without a Martian. They would have to bring Bobbie into the crew, for sure.

However, as of the end of Season Three, I did not care for Ashford at all (though I love the actor). Maybe they will make Bull likable by the end of Season Six, however, I do not see it this season.

@@menelikiii5004 temp in vacuum is not "so low." Vacuum is basically a near perfect insulator. That part of the ship was in at least partial sunlight. That is going to make it warm. Possibly even hot. For instance:
"The outside of the ISS can reach temperatures as high as 250 degrees F (121 C) on the sunny side and as low as -250 degrees F (-157 C) on the shady side."
And Naomi was not in vacuum long enough for her to experience any significant heat loss from her body. It would still be at normal temperature because the only way to radiate heat (unless touching something) is infrared radiation.
