  • Vivian discusses what is a bioplastic, if it's a sustainable solution for us, and how to work together to create a more sustainable Earth. Vivian is a 15-year-old advocate for mental health and the environment through volunteering. She is also the founder of YOUth of BC, dedicated to helping youth in British Columbia. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

It's absolutely crazy how we've known of these methods for years, but they're not used in the mainstream market. I think it's time to start using these methods, instead of just showing them on tv.

going to answer a lot of comments-no not all bioplastics are biodegradable or compostable. Some are harder to understand than others. EG. Sugarcane bioplastics are not degradable but are less harmful to the earth bc it doesn't release fumes into the earth (or so found till now) and can be reused, OXO plastic is another plastic which is pretty cool. It's claimed to be and tested to be easily degradable-apparently it needs to touch light and water to degrade faster (its slow). Fastest degradable material i'ce found is seaweed plastic-not popular yet and another i love is mushroom packaging-but there are no mushroom plastics yet.

I am looking to source a small plastic film/bag packaging for a product that I produce. Would like the material to be clear, so the consumer can see the contents. What would be the best type of bioplastic to used that would break naturally?
I did some research and am having trouble finding a clear solution to this.

I was just going to say about the shortcomings... there are so many more problems actually with using most, not all but most biodegradable plastics.
2/3 of biodegradable plastics on the market do more damage to our ecosystem then regular plastic! why? because it does partly biodegrade, but not in the way we think as it's taking poisonous attributes into our habitats.
not all of them but it seems like most of them. in the end they're doing more harm than regular plastic!

  • @pusou1117

Saying all of this wearing PU shoes, Nylon fabric clothes.... there is where unconscious speaks about plastic, no one (or practically no one) will trade a lifestyle or money for a cause greater than the individual. Bioplastic will be largely used in the coming years, but it is loaded plastic : 30% or less of bio plastic + 70% or more of fossil plastic (that could be recycled) - bioplastic will just limit the harm of plastic...
