Just one remark by a native German: The „Ei“ in „Rollei“ is pronounced like a shortened version of „eye“ - similar as in „Leica“. Congratulations to that beauty of a Hasselblad 500
Funny I actually know this but no one in the USA pronounces is that way so I just went with it haha. I lived in Germany for 3yrs, and my family lived there 7yrs. Love and miss Germany and living in Europe in general!
I bought my first Leica - an M-P(typ240) 3 weeks ago and am loving the experience after years of searching and purchasing many DSLR’s. Then I bought and am waiting delivery on a Mamiya RB67 with 4 lenses so I can relive the ancient days I had with a Mamiya Press. 😊 Your video has landed perfectly, thank you Dave.
Love the video and the insight! I'm very similar to you when it comes to the importance of experience. I just got a Rolleiflex as a "big brother" to my M3 and M11 and couldn't be happier!
Congrats brotha on the new purchase. Hassy 500s are amazing. I picked my 503cw 2 months ago and been in love ever since. So much that I even bought the new 907x 100c to mess around with film and digital.
Great video Dave! Really appreciate your thoughts and advice on this photography journey. Your thoughtfulness and kindness shines through in your videos and thanks for the inspiration you give. Keep up the fantastic work bro and have fun with the new Hasselblad! I myself have never shot medium format and just picked up the Pentax 645 not even 2 days ago and waiting for my 75mm 2.8 lens to arrive. I'm excited to shoot it and will be looking out for tips from your channel. Thanks again! 🤙
so i have the Pentaxt 67, the image quality is amazing, however, i love shooting my Hassy 203 FE more its my all-time favorite camera, i love the the focal plane models as they allow 1/2000 shutter speed.
Love the video as always, been using my M11 as my new refreshing experience for personal shooting. Sometimes I’ll akimbo my M11 35 and Sony R3 with the 135 or 90 macro for the detail shots.
If this was the same one that was on Craigslist in the Bay Area, I almost pulled the trigger on it. Glad you got it and looking forward to seeing your work with it!
Dave, over the last few months, I believe my set of cameras/lens is also complete. My GAS levels are way down. Did not even look up a Rolleiflex or 500cm yet! That lack of lust is even better than chasing gear! Enjoy the focus on creating with whatever kit you have. Thanks as always!
For 500cm it is pretty much only two viable options: 100mm f/3.5, 120mm f4 Macro - since they are pretty close I would decide my preferences on distance and go with the one lens. I would not buy anything wider than 80mm as it is harder to focus. For wide, Hasselblad has a real gem 💎 38mm SWC.
Nice pickup for sure! Still have my Hasselblad cameras, my son shoots film and has one of my Hasselblad, I stick to digital on my M10-R and love it, that is perhaps the best camera I’ve ever owned! Back in the day the Nikon F3 HP was the daily camera, lasted 10 years or more! Good stuff Dave happy shooting.
Congrats on the Hasselblad--you will love it. I have and shoot all three of those MF cameras. They all render images with unique looks, and my favorite may be the Rollei (Planar 3.5), and this is easily the easiest to carry. The 500cm is more versatile (I have three lenses) and not bad to handhold, and this may be my most-used camera. Unfortunately, I love the 6x7 aspect ratio and like deliberative shooting on a tripod, so the RB comes out when I have the time and muscle for that approach. I have owned in the past 6x9 Fuji rangefinders and a Pentax 6x7--all lovely cameras that I wish I had never sold. In fact, this is my resolution for 2024--not to sell any camera this year. I am always sorry. Thanks for the post.
I have to agree with you 100%. That's why I refuse to shoot digital for personal work. I don't enjoy the experience therefore not motivated to go out and shoot. Right now I enjoy shooting with my Nikon fm2, f4, f100 and a Nikkormatt. Fingers crossed I'm finally getting a Leica MP with perhaps the 35mm f/2 Cron. I've been a wedding photographer for the last 13 years and winding down my career. (I'm old) Looking to do more fine art street photography with black and white film
Looks like you went Hasselblad route. Congratulations! Here is a few recommendations for the things to buy next: 100mm f/3.5, 120mm f/4, PME45 and extension tubes 😅
After several years with the Sony a7r3 my motivation to photography was at years minimum (perfectly clean images), and took it out 2/3 times in a year. I decided to buy an M6 and rediscovered the feel and love to use it, then Leica lust happened and bought an Leica iii and Leica M3. After that I paired it with the big brothers, rolleiflex 3.5 and hasselblad 500cm. Only then I decided to move digital with Leica M10 last week to pair with the Sony, let’s see if it’s up to the task and I feel more motivated to photograph than with the Sony.
I have the same C/M and lens. Looks like your lens might be the same somewhat rare “transitional” version: silver w/ T* coating? Hasselblad made a few to test their new T* coating before moving to the more modern black lenses. BTW, I got a 645 back for it too, for those days when I want a different look, save some dough.
Tangential question: any tips on photographing the fire falls or Yosemite in general? Heading there in a couple weeks with a Leica Q3 and a Sony A7S III + 70-200 f2.8
Nice! You got a reservation? Can I hop in? 😂 I’d say bring a nice long lens and use a timer on your camera on a tripod to get a nice clear photo. Prepare for 10000 people around you.
@@davidherring we're staying at a lodge in the valley, so uhh...I think we have a reservation? lol -- would definitely invite you but have a wife + baby with me
My Leica M6 has a big brother -- a Fuji GSW690 III rangefinder with fixed 65mm f/5.6 wide-angle lens. My Leica M6 also has a big sister -- a Fuji GW670 III rangefinder with fixed 90mm f/3.5 normal lens.
For film rolleiflex older version from 1945, super light whole mechanical, russian Leica 2 copy 😂 bessa R and Nikon f5, for digital Fujifilm xt1 gives much fun and owned for years Nikon d700
So funny I’ve been shooting a 500cm for a week on loan not sure if I want to make that commitment it depends on how I feel about the photos once I get them from the lab
I think in terms of “special looks” the lenses on the Pentax 67 system are definitely better. But for classic / timeless and a spectacular experience, Hasselblad & Rolleiflex all the way.

I have both too! RB67 is such a beast of a camera though.

Oh man I LOVE that idea but I’d need to move some gear around to snag that 100c haha. Would love to see some of your shots!

The Hassy is a blast to use. Going to be putting several rolls through it over the next couple of days and I’m excited about it.

Thanks so much. The M11 is an incredible experience and I absolutely love it as well.

It was Facebook marketplace but probably the same one! It is super clean and apparently a rare version of this lens 💪🏼
Dave congratulations!! You’re doing great‼️
Full frame with the Leica and medium format with the Hasselblad!
Looking forward 👍🏻
Thank you! Really love it.

Congrats! Yeah I feel like I'm landing the plane. There's nothing else Leica I need. Short of setting up my MF rig, I'll be set!
Dave always bringing the heat these days
Haha thanks man
We almost get the same set, M9+M11m+M3+501cm, this 4 cameras are covering everything I need for photography.
That’s awesome! Yeah I’m now feeling a purge coming of everything I’ve tried that didn’t stick. This setup is really all
I need!
what a gorgeous cam! congrats
Thank you!
Thing looks sick! We need a video on the SL too.
It’s coming soon!
Nice! Hasselblads are great- I just didn’t want to be tempted to buy additional lenses. All art is also a practice in restraint and restriction!

Great choice! A 500cm or Rollei SL66 is on my list.
Nice list!
I’ve owned all of these for decades-I think you’ll still miss the Rollei.
Yeah, I definitely do

Yep, silver with T* coating! I had no idea. So cool! I’m definitely planning to get at least one other back.
