Despite the long list of credentials and accolades, Tony is no stranger to his share of questionable and dumb decisions, one of which is often overlooked, which I believe to be the dumbest in game move he's ever made.

Definitely a questionable decision, by not a horrible decision in 1992 standards. If steinbach would have driven the run home via sacrifice fly, then LaRussa would have been labeled a genius. I think this argument goes either way.
The 7th inning of Game 3 of the 2001 NLDS was also one of his worst managing moments from the Cardinals.
This is a good video - everyone remembers the iconic Alomar HR off Eckersley from this game but not everyone remembers that the A's had a great chance to walk it off in the bottom of the inning. Also that a prime McGwire was up as the winning run in the bottom of the 11th but flied out.
I see both sides of it. now all he needs is his next batter to hit a fly ball deep enough for the tag-up and score. 0 outs is the only time you would see that sac bunt to advance the runner, its old school baseball
Don’t think this is as egregious as portrayed in the video. I get your point but the dumbest decision? No. This is coming from a Cubs fan. I think his dumbest decision was coming out of retirement tell you the truth.
I agree with you. McGwire was struggling that series, and he got the runner to third with less than two outs. If Steinbach hits a fly ball to the outfield, the series is tied, McGwire is labeled as an unselfish team player, and LaRussa is hailed as a genius.
I think the bigger decision was bringing in Eckersley in a non save situation in the 8th. He was very seldom used that way. Or if he wanted to slam the door, he should have skipped Parrett and had Eckersley start the 8th. That Toronto team was amazing, but they would not have gotten five runs off Eckersley before he got six outs with no one on base…

Hind sight 20/20...if the run would've scored and the A's win ..good decision..

I am a lifelong Cardinal fan. I never much liked Larussa. Is what it is. I don't much care for Marmol. Maybe I just don't like managers😂😂😂
