This was UA Eats' 200th video! Wow we've come so far on this channel, I still remember vividly when I had single digit subs. A perfect milestone just in time for the Holidays!
I’m an American living in Japan and I’ve been searching for real buffalo wings in Tokyo here . I’ve been searching for 11 years and finally I found a place that actually had authentic wings so I posted it on google maps and the manager answered me and thanked me for the review then told me that the owner of the place is from upstate New York and that’s why they’re authentic. The owner is probably from the Buffalo area .
Is it just me or has the quality of the chicken wing itself gone down in all of western ny? Not like the sauce or cook, just the chicken quality itself is not good. After 2020 its been way worse imo.
@ I think a lot of places pre cook wings ahead of time then just warm them up , pour sauce on them and serve them . I worked in a restaurant in New York for a while and a huge batch of wings were pre cooked then left in a huge refrigerator. When someone ordered wings a few would be taken out then re cooked and served . French fries are often prepared this way to cut down on time . This is what happens when something becomes popular.
Current buffalo resident of over 30 years here. Anchor Bar really is the Pat's and Gino's of our city as you said. Duffs is an all around favorite here and standard to judge any other wing around here. Notable favorites as of recent are Bar-Bill Tavern, Elmo's and Wingnutz if you have the time and want to try the best trifecta in wings here.
Took my family to Niagara for a vacation from KY (I was born and raised in the Hudson Valley). Duffs was the first place we had wings, and went to Anchor bar a few days later because we were tourists. We all agreed we liked Duffs more.
@@uaeatsFun Fact The Maryland and Virginia Locations(independently owned) Both offer a couple of exclusive locally inspired menu options. Like Old Bay wings or a Virginia Ham sandwich etc.
Born and raised in Buffalo. Either WINGS or CHICKEN WINGS. And there are a LOT of local places with GREAT wings. Can't go wrong with the wings at a lot of the pizzerias (hot/bbq at LaNova's, are my favorite!). And for beef on weck, you need some real horseradish (not the mayonaise stuff).
The naked wings are deep fried twice. The first time for about 20-25 minutes at 225 degrees. The second frying is at 400+ degrees for 2-4 minutes. First frying gets the interior meat hot and juicy. The second frying gets the wings exterior (skin) very crispy without drying it out. Mmm!
Duffs medium is a bit more spicy so you might prefer them! I’ve tried both and really can’t go wrong with either. Gabriel’s gate is also a local favorite for wings and the beef on weck from what I’ve tried!
UA you have to eat the beef on "Veck" with really strong horseradish spread on the inside of the bun. That is traditional here in Buffalo.. Glad you finally made it! Cheers! Go Bills!
Glad you enjoyed your trip to WNY. Many locals would say anchor bar wings are overrated (or at least, not the best) but it's definitely a piece of local history! Every neighborhood has it's wing spot & everyone has their favorite
Dude I’m loving your videos Subs for sure, the food looks great and you actually tell the back story, keep it up man, looking forward to all your videos.
I'm from Buffalo. You use the blue cheese and celery to relieve yourself of the heat from the wings so you can munch more! People usually get hot. They don't usually dip the wing in the blue cheese.
UA - love your shows. The interesting thing about the blue cheese sauce was that originally, when they invented this dish and threw it together, the celery sticks and the blue cheese were supposed to be eaten together. It was like a side salad to go along with your wings. Cheese was never meant to be put on the wings themselves. Having said that, I love me some blue cheese on wings
My uncle went on a business trip to Buffalo sometime in the 70’s and had Buffalo Wings. I’m not sure he ate at this place or another place but wherever it was, they gave him the recipe. He made them as a treat on special occasions but he always served them with sliced pickles. He only made them on special occasions because wings were hard to come by at the time. He had to save wings from the chickens he bought whole and cut up. Sometimes he would use chicken legs if he was short on wings. I actually like the legs better, so I didn’t mind. The first time I had them was in 1982 during the Freezer Bowl. I remember them being so spicy that they burned my entire mouth and throat, but boy they were good. I never dipped them in blue cheese dressing until I was in my early 20’s and that changed everything. That is the only way I eat them now. Fun fact Franks Red Hot originated in Cincinnati and was made here for decades.
I love watching your videos despite not being able to eat at any of them because I keep kosher. But I’m so interested in the places you go and the stuff you try.
@ plenty of kosher food but most places aren’t great. And UA has never gone to a (glatt kosher) place. But the vegetarian Chinese places in manhattan are on my bucket list.
Hey UA, love your videos and reviews. I think you could make some of your own recipes or other peoples recipes and review those, just an idea if you need more content.
The story I heard was when her husband passed away she found out how far in debt the restaurant was that she couldn't buy supplies. The chicken supplier offered the wings as they basically had no value back then. She made it work to get the restaurant back going.
Duffs, La Nova and Bar Bill are all great, local neighborhoods all over this area have really good wing joints. Suicidal are my favorite or plain hot depending how brave I feel that day...lol No butter at all in the sauce please! If I had to pick, Duffs for sure! Anchor's are good though and they normally feel no need to compete, after all they are the originators! Take care UA, Merry Christmas and have an excellent New Year!!
Going to anchor bar is like going for a cheesesteak in Philly at pats or Ginos. Bar Bill is the best !!. Like I said in the other video I sure hope that you go to chefs downtown and try the spaghetti parm.
I am from Western NY and agree with you about there being too much salt on kimmelweck roll. If I have to have a roast beef sandwich I just get it on a plain roll and add a bunch of horseradish. Also, medium wings are generally not spicy (Unless you are a Bar-Bills in East Aurora). Hot would probably be more to your liking.
Happy 200! I think Beef on a Weck is a Bar Bill thing, i need to get to both of these places. Buffalo isns tell me Bar Bill has the best wings. My neice works at Anchor Bar tho :) Merry Xmas!
I’d point out that Geno’s had nothing to do with the origin of cheesesteaks. They opened in 1966, well after Pat’s started making cheesesteaks in the 30s/40s. They just had the chutzpah to open a competing business across the street from Pat’s.
My first grown-up job was a sales engineering gig. I would take clients, distributors, & RSMs to the Anchor Bar for lunches. We’d get the tenders because you didn’t want to have Frank’s on your hands for afternoon calls. Went to college in Philly. “Is anyone good to drive to Pat’s?” was a late night question.
For any out-of-towners thinking of visiting this location on Main & E. North Street, be very careful. It's a very high-crime area & a lot of rats, the size of cats around. The nice thing about this location though, is that a lot of celeberties go in here, espcially if they're doing a concert downtown. I met the entire band "Winger" in the parking lot, and Jamie Lee Curtis, just to name a couple at this location.
Happy Monday, UA and Tina. UA, I had to chuckle when you said the weck roll was too salty since, in many of your older videos, the places you visited lacked salt in their food. All that aside, the wings and tenders looked delicious but the beef looked dry and over cooked. Have a great rest of your evening and Merry Christmas to you and Tina

Lived in Buffalo for over 30 years, eaten wings all over...but I'm a Duff's guy if I have to pick one. Luckily Duff's has an outpost in Dallas (Southlake) a bit of a drive for us, but if we want a taste of home, worth it!
the waiter asked if you wanted the ju on the side or on the sandwich. if you order it on the sandwich then all the meat inside will have that flavor on it and not be as bland.
I wish I knew you were 5 minutes From when I live! Anchor bar is ok, definitely better in the city. If you ever come back try charlie the butcher for the weck. Wings go to bar bill m, Elmo’s or Gabriel’s gate. Love your videos
Oh those prices! "All You Can Eat Wings" in a live jazz bar in Toronto in 1984 were $5.99. Yes, I know times, and prices, have changed, but not that much. They've priced me out of the market, if no one else. Fast food should not be a luxury.

BTW, Great video!
Ahh UA! You did the "tourist" thing in Buffalo! If you want great wings and weck in Buffalo you need to hit up Bar Bill! Anchor Bar is good but definitely not the best wings in Buffalo. Other great places for great wings in Buffalo are Wingnuts, Duffs, Gabriels Gate also hopefully you tried some authentic Buffalo Style pizza while in town. It's a unique style of pizza compared to the traditional NY style pizza.
When I went to Buffalo to go to a Bills game, people told me to avoid Anchor Bar and go to Duffs or Bar Bill. We went to Duffs and was pleasantly satisfied.
Visited the Anchor Bar back in 2002. There may be better wings but it was fun to step into history. Like you, I like crispy wings without the breading. Had "beef on weck" in Syracuse. I don't need to do that again. Not bad but not my cup of tea.

Visited the Anchor Bar back in 2002. There may be better wings but it was fun to step into history. Like you, I like crispy wings without the breading. Had "beef on weck" in Syracuse. I don't need to do that again. Not bad but not my cup of tea.
