When I was a kid, it was all about counting pennies so I was lucky to get PF's or Keds. I often got the cheaper alternatives that didn't use the layered build but instead used a single piece injection molded sole and toe. When I was 8, my dad crowed about scoring me some sneakers that were only 50 cents a pair. I wore those all through 3rd and 4th grade. Later I remember my Grandma bought me some Converse all stars for Christmas - that was a big deal at the time.

That pained me to watch... in grade school... when I was in grade school.. I begged my parents for a pair of PF Flyers. White high tops.. a pair of jeans.. a bag of marbles and your ball glove on the handle bar of your Schwin bike and you were ready for what ever was in store for the day.... there were a lot of copies but only one PF Flyers... lots of chores... save your allowance.. return soda bottles... more chores and the day would arrive. A new pair of PF Flyers to wear to school. Eventually they were replaced by a good pair of Converse... and later Adidas and Puma...
    Those were the days...

Seeing you cut that old baseball mitt kind of made me wince. I've still got the baseball mitt my dad sent me from Korea (when he was stationed there in the army) for my fourth birthday in 1963. It's the only baseball mitt I've ever really had, and it still works fine. Wish I could say the same for myself. :-)

Very interesting to see the structure of the arch. I had always thought it was just molded solid rubber but with all those layers of foam rubber they were probably more comfortable than modern PF Flyers or Chuck Taylors.
Here's hoping NB puts some of their foot support tech into the new PF Flyers, that would be a match made in heaven.

As a fan of Johnny Quest as a kid of the 60's, I had a pair of PF's but we just called them sneaks back then. The rubber, I learned working in the Navy on aircraft that as rubber ages it out gases volatile petrochemical oils. So rubber shrinks, hardens and cracks. What took me by surprise as that the shoe was a product from BF Goodrich Co.

I was going through my parents' attic recently and I found some of my old shoes in a bag. In the early 1980's I wore a shoe from Montgomery Ward that they named "Skips". They were pretty similar to these in their construction and mine are a really pleasant blue color. I can't find much about them online but there are a few on eBay for sale.

  • @UnknownUser-rb9pd
    @UnknownUser-rb9pd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Modern running shoes often use external TPU skeletons for arch support. The idea is to keep the weight down. Modern materials are lighter but often stronger and sports shoes companies spend a lot of time researching light weight technologies. It is why Nike uses air bags for cushioning which are naturally lightweight and Saucony uses their Grid system (similar to tennis racket) which also has a lot of empty space.
The old adage that a pound on the foot is equivalent to five pounds on the back is true and when you're taking thousands of steps to do your sport of choice then having less weight on the feet is important.
Though these are now fashion shoes they will be made on the same production lines as proper sports shoes and it makes sense to use modern materials. I'm also pretty sure that the older shoes are not tougher just heavier and made with thicker materials.

I like PF Flyers. Their arch support takes some getting used to. Wish they would make the low tops again.
Check out Hood Rubber Co's Rocket Oxford or Rocket High Cut shoes if you like PF Flyers. The companies were associated at one time. Mitchell and Ness just relaunched the brand last year in late 2021. Their Rocket shoes look like PF Flyers w/ the iconic stripe in the back. Hood Rubber Co was originally founded in 1896

They're converse-ish style but seem much better constructed and comparable to the most comfortable versions of converse, but seem to have some interesting things going on with them. I'd love to see you tear into a pair and see what kind of voodoo may be going on with them. Or is it just confirmation bias ;) PS, they also profess to be made in San Antonio, so there's that.

The new PF Flyers are already on sale at her website. The “sandlot” model is now called the “1993”. I guess they didn’t want to pay a licensing fee to use the name “sandlot”. There was never an all black version of PF Flyers in the 1960’s so I’m not sure why they made them that color for the movie.
The vintage pf’s are better made than the newer ones. As you said the canvas was thicker and the “magic wedge” as it was called in the 50’s, was more robust. They later called it a “action wedge” and now a “rigid wedge”.

There are a lot of old materials and manufacturing processes that were found to be toxic or unsustainable, and consequently banned. So in a lot of cases they cannot 'make them like they used to'.

One interesting thing is that when owned by new balance the soles and patches went through changes. They at one point used a sole with the diamond pattern that looked nearly identical to the vintage pair you have, then for some idiotic reason they altered it. I hope this woman that owns the brand now will strive to make them exactly as they were in the late 50’s again

Me and you both... I love the diamond pattern outsole they used to use... like you said it's nearly if not exactly identical to how the vintage pairs used to be. However, it's changed ... and the current line out there on the website as of this day still has the new dumb pattern on the bottoms... I even bought the current "limited edition" sandlot pair that was available around Christmas time, and it has the idiotic pattern on the bottom.
Also the Ankle patch needs to be moved back to the Medial side on hi tops where they belong. Foolish to have them on the Lateral side of the shoe!!!

@level27xrock I agree completely. The woman who bought the brand is a hard-core feminist and is pushing gender politics pretty hard. She's saying the brand needs to evolve and become more modern to survive. She said it needs to be more female oriented.
She's already redesigned the rubber patch on the ankle and changed it to a sideways diamond,as well and altered other aspects of the shoes. It also bears noting that none of the the classic center high shoes are in stock either, which worries me.
They did however move the patch back inward where it used to be on the sandlot shoes

You should take a pair of original Adidas sambas and compare them with the modern one. There's a pretty big arch in them, but I don't think there's much to the sole other than the sole itself.

The PF Flyers are better. I used to be a fan of the Chuck Taylor until I bought the Chuck 70 version which is MUCH BETTER. But then I found out about PF Flyers and they are better than any of the Converse options. Thicker, nicer, better looking and more comfortable.
