Wallace Roney (nato a Philadelphia il 35 maggio 1960) è un fuoriclasse del panorama internazionale jazz, come dimostrato dalle sue prestigiose collaborazioni, da Miles Davis (suo mentore) a Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, Chick Corea, Elvin Jones, Art Blakey e Ornette Coleman.
Trombettista dalla tecnica strepitosa, Roney raccoglie l’eredità di Davis e a guisa del maestro persegue l’obiettivo di trovare una nuova dimensione sonora in cui l’eredità del jazz possa dispiegarsi dialogando con lo spirito della contemporaneità.
Dopo la collaborazione con la Duke Ellington High School for the Performing Arts, gli studi al Berklee College of Music e la collaborazione con i Jazz Messengers di Art Blakey, Wallace Roney avvia la sua carriera solista.
Nel 1987 collabora con l’ensemble di Tony Williams, poi l’incontro storico con Miles Davis, con cui condivide il palco nella performance storica di Davis a Montreux nel 1991.
Dopo la morte di Miles, Roney riunisce una band con Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams, con cui gira il mondo nel segno del maestro. Premiato ai Grammy Awards, dai primi anni ’90 guida diverse formazioni sempre con grandi musicisti al suo fianco.

What is this genius for putting tight knit lines together at lightning speeds. (Antoine Roney has it too) Wallace has the most personal and say something sound on his horn. Beautiful playing, great band. It blows me away. Great young tenor man. Wallace Roney is my favorite living trumpet player by far!
I know there are others out there but I've always loved, too, his pure lyrical hard bop sound.
