    You're not the only one who broke down over a Gargoyle. Many others did as well.
    Dream's line to Gregory, "You have served this kingdom with great honor. You will be missed." I was ugly crying
    Loved your pure laughter when you heard Girving!! Priceless!
    I noticed the slight register of you knowing the name, Constantine. When I heard it the first time, I basically screamed (internally) and got so excited!!

    Johanna Constantine is based off John Constantine from the Hellblazer comic book series, the same one that inspired the Keanu Reeves movie and the Matt Ryan series. It's interesting that you noticed the pronunciation of their name, the book was very emphatic about how it's said and both the movie and series got it wrong, this is how it's actually pronounced.

    • @reverance_pavane
      @reverance_pavane 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually Joanna was John's ancestor. A lot of people are assuming she is simply a gender-swapped John. Her role in the original comic was basically the same as her appearance in Episode 6. In the disengagement of from the DC Universe Neil extended her role to cover that of John's appearance in the comic (to the dissatisfaction of a lot of people who wanted Hellblazer).

      There are two Johanna's in the show. The 18th century one as in the comic, and the one taking the place of John as her descendant.

    They did an excellent job designing Gregory. His gentle eyes are drawn like that in the comic. Goldie looks just like Goldie too. Fun fact, in episode 1 and 2 you see a version of how Dream is drawn in the comic. In the comic, he is portrayed with completely black eyes with two star points in the center. That’s briefly how Alex sees him in his dream and how Dream’s reflection looks. Very exciting for the comic fans. 😅
    Lastly, Neil Gaiman has said that a Corinthian is an archaic term for a rake, scoundrel, or ne’er do well.
    Great reaction!

      OH how much more exciting it would've been if they'd kept the MAIN CHARACTERS as visually faithful to the comics as they did the rest of the series. Dream and Death were goth rocker ICONS. Now they're some lame, milk toast almost-emos who wear human skin tones and eyes...
      Lucien is a great example. As ridiculous as the race and gender swap is here as it is anywhere, I don't really care about the character enough to care about that, but WHY isn't she at least freakishly tall!? These are supposed to be imaginative characters, out of this world and they look like bland human beings. I want to break something.

    Several characters used to be the "hosts" of horror anthology comics published by DC. Cain hosted a comic called "House of Mystery" (which for a time in the '80s was taken over by Elvira), while Abel hosted "House of Secrets." Lucienne (in the comics, a man named Lucien) hosted a short-lived comic called "Tales of Ghost Castle." The Three-in-One/Fates/Kindly Ones/Three Witches hosted "The Witching Hour." All of their books had been cancelled, so Neil Gaiman decided to give them new roles when he launched The Sandman.

    • @elbruces
      @elbruces 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Not only those, but the oldest Endless, Destiny, hosted "Weird Mystery Tales."
      DC had no plans for any of those old horror anthology comics, so Gaiman got to do whatever he wanted with them. They were basically gathering dust in the basement, and he was like "you mind if I take these?"

    That look of realization of what Morpheus's objective of his visit with Gregory, I know it well. I think we all shed some tears for him.
    I don't remember why he did it, but Morpheus placed a large portion of his power in his tools, which is why he doesn't have the strength to rebuild the Dreaming. I suppose plot wise it gives him this quest to retrieve them though.
    I'll just consider you an honorary Canadian and hope you have had an opportunity to have visited Canada at some point.

    you have absolutely seen a gargoyle in real life....
    Gargoyles are rain-spouts on old stone buildings usually carved into a shape of a creature.. To be a gargoyle it has to have a channel and spout to allow the drainage of water.
    If it doesn't have a water spout then it's a grotesque

  • @matthewhearn9910

    Dream is technically the closest thing to his name, Morpheus is the name given by the Roman poet Ovid to the God of Dreams, which Sandman identifies with the character of Dream. Since it's more of a name, most characters tend to refer to him as Morpheus over Dream, unless they're beings on his level and in his family (a few have been mentioned but the most prominent of these family members so far in the narrative has been Death).

    • @morlock2012

    Constantine with a "-tine" like a ""pine" is the right way how it was supposed to be, as made by Alan Moore, the creator of John Constantine. In the Swamp Thing comic John corrects other guy that says is "Constanteen".
    "Constanteen" was an Americanized version used for the Keanu Reeves movie and it kinda stuck with the general audience.

    Great reaction especially with getting to "Girving" ahead of the show. Sad to see Gregory go and even in the short time we knew him, still very impactful with the losing a pet analogy. Constintine in the comics is John Constintine from the Hellblazer comic. He's had a movie with Keanu Reeves a while back (and I guess they're making a new one now), but he had his own show on NBC and appeared in Legends of Tomorrow. It's not Johanna Constintine in the show because of legal reasons with licensing, I'm guessing. Can't wait for you to see more!

    Paraphrasing Jeff in Community, "let's say I tell you this pencil's name is Norm and that he wants to be an architect." (Snaps pencil, everybody gasps in shock) Yeah, that's what they did to us with Gregory. Show us a cute CGI creature, have it act like a puppy, then kill it off.
    They added the "being around powerful magic items makes you live longer" thing since the comic book Dream escaped his imprisonment in 1989, but now it's 2022, so a few people in the story are just like 120 years old now, deal with it. They couldn't move the start date back since the "sleepy sickness" was a real historical thing and they wanted to keep that (along with Burgess being an Aleister Crowley contemporary, plus all the WW1 references).
    A gallows is as powerful a symbol as an egg or crossroads.

    There are a lot of smaller changes made with the show, some that seem rather strange to me while others create more nuance.
    *In the comic:* when Dream returns he is so weak that his found lying on the ground for Gregory to pick him up and take him to Cain and Able. And it was their land-contract he had granted them, which Dream absorbed, not Gregory.

    @UncleMilo 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hey there! I just showed up on this reaction today... and I know it is a year old.... but I wanted to give you a massive amount of nerdery... as I am a massive nerd.
    First off... very briefly, the story of Cain and Abel is about two brothers (the sons of Adam and Eve). Cain makes an offering to God of vegetables from his farm and Abel sacrificed one of his sheep. God preferred Abel's offering and in jealousy, Cain murders Abel. Cain is punished by being given the mark of Cain and forced to walk among mankind.
    Anyway... DC Comics had two horror anthology titles way back called "The House of Mysteries" and "The House of Secrets"
    As a joke, they made the hosts of these two comic anthologies Cain and Abel respectively - they were much like the Crypt Keeper from Creepshow comics.
    So... the original story of Swamp Thing first appeared in the "House of Secrets" but in that story, it was set in the 1800s.
    When Alan Moore took over the Swamp Thing comic, he decided to incorporate that original Swamp Thing comic into the continuity of the Swamp Thing comic book. A character from the comic, Abigail Arcane, falls asleep and in her dream, she meets Cain and Able (and Alan Moore decided to imply the hosts of the comics were the actual Biblical Cain and Abel. Abigail found Cain creepy and disturbing so she goes with Able into his House of Secrets. Abel tells Abigail the story of the 1800s Swamp Thing as it appears in the old comic and tells her the connection between the Swamp Thing from them to the Swamp Thing in the current comic. He tries to get Abigail out so she can wake up with the information, but they are stopped by Cain. Cain shouts that if Abigail wanted to hold on to the information then she should never have asked to be told a secret. In his anger, he murders Abel... and when Abigail reacts in horror saying how shocked she was by Cain murdering his brother... Cain says one of my favorite lines "Don't talk to me about murder! I INVENTED IT!" Anyway, Abigail escapes Cain by waking up... but like most dreams, she forgot what it was she had dreamed about.
    Neil Gaiman, being a fan of Alan Moore's writing, put a NUMBER of references to Alan Moore's run of Swamp Thing into his Sandman comic. Since Cain and Able and their respective houses showed up in Abigail's dream... Neil felt that it was only right to keep showing them as living in the realm of dreams. He even kept the joke about Cain constantly killing Abel over and over again.
    So... there you go.
    Just a lot of nerdy information from me... a massive nerd!

  • @SpiderRiderKya

    Cain and Abel were the sons of Adam and Eve. Cain killed his brother in a fit of jealousy (hence 'the first murderer' and 'the first victim') That's about all that's relevant here, as it explains why Cain is constantly killing his brother.
    So, Sandman is, technically, a DC property, and the comics have A LOT of DC hero and place cameos (pretty much all of which have been worked out of the story, almost certainly due to like, copyright). Keeping that in mind, the hospital that John is in is a mental hospital. Arkham Asylum, specifically(you know, the place from Batman that homes The Joker, among others). In the comics John was some DC villain named Doctor Destiny. As you can surmise, that's not the case here.

    There's a thing I've been wondering even since I read the Sandman comics. Very minor spoiler about Death's character and one that anyone who hears there's a character named Death has probably already guessed:
    Death is present when people die. Burgess died next to Dream in that cellar. HOW THE HECK didn't Dream see Death and ask for help, in that instance?

    • @jamil4009

    • @commandermercury6654
      @commandermercury6654 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Supposedly Gaiman was asked something similar to that in an interview once. His response more or less boiled down to, “The Endless usually keep to themselves. Sometimes they help each other, but mostly they keep to their own realms. They’re not a team that goes around saving each other like the Justice League. And even if they had come to his aid Dream wouldn’t have taken kindly to it. He would’ve seen being trapped as his own problem, something that he had to find a way out of alone.”
      I don’t know if the story’s true or not, but I could absolutely believe the sentiment. Dream, especially in the early comics and episodes, is egotistical, introverted, and petty. Even if one of his siblings had offered to free him he most likely would have declined.
      And he’s so rigid and strict in his own rules that he most likely wouldn’t have stepped in to offer *his* help if the roles were reversed.
      If he asked Death outright why she didn’t help him I can see this exchange going down.
      “You knew where I was trapped for 100 years! Why did you not come and free me?!”
      “Would you have accepted my help if I had?”
      “….No.”
      “Exactly. So shut up.”

    • @lassesipila6418
      @lassesipila6418 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@commandermercury6654 I would also agree with that response, whether Gaiman really said it or not. That's pretty much how I always interpreted in the comics. However, that's only up until the point where a sibling of his would happen to come by in the process of their own duties. ESPECIALLY if it's Death, since he seems to have the most direct relationship with her. In the end I'll have to pen this down to acceptable plot hole, shoddily patched up by - as Jamil mentions - Death saying she's not ALWAYS present. I don't think that idea makes any sense, except as a necessity to write in since there was a necessity to have Dream remain in the Burgess house even after Burgess' death right next to him.

    IN THE COMICS: Cain and Abel are three things at once. Originally each was a host in DC Comics' "House of Secrets" and "House of Mystery" which were published at the same time. They would introduce the horror stories in every issue. Cain was caretaker of House of Mystery and Abel took care of the House of Secrets down the road. Besides being servants of Dream, they are THE CAIN AND ABEL of The Bible. Being the "oldest story" of humanity of course they exist in the Land of Dreams. Get used to that sort of idea...

    This TV adaptation of Sandman will be interesting. When originally made, it was firmly part of the DC universe. Don't know if this true now, but AT THE TIME (the '90s!), the highest powers of the DC Universe are displayed as the beings/forces of Judeo-Christian religion. God was usually male, the Arch-Angels exist as well as the Holy Spirit (aka Spirit of Vengeance aka The Spectre). This is important to know. If the stories are kept more or less the same, knowledge of such will enhance appreciation even if you don't believe in those or are even an atheist.

  • @jamesfoster9613
    @jamesfoster9613 ปีที่แล้ว

    This episode messed me up. In the comics (not a spoiler), Gregory doesn't die. Dream takes Cain and Abel's "letters of service", basically their contracts from the "beginning of time" as first murderer, first victim (and despite using biblical names, its heavily suggested they aren't originally human), to represent that story in the Dreaming. So yeah, seeing Gregory be willing to sacrifice himself? Blew me away.
    But Cain, Abel, Gregory, Lucien (in the comics he is a tall elf-like guy), etc are all part of old horror comics, so Neil Gaiman lifted them into these comics as side character who were "side hussling" telling stories while Dream was captured.

    It is interesting that so many reactors do not know the story of Cain and Abel. I can understand not understanding the religious history but at least the pop culture mythos that has entered western society. It is like the Homeric Hymns most people don't know them but they are familiar with the stories in some way because they are the root metaphors of western society. It is probably a good thing because people who do not know these stories can be surprised when they see movies and TV or written media and not know the base ideas most all stories come from. With eastern mythology entering entertainment I guess those stories will mostly be lost to us viewers. Neil Gaiman stories like The Sandman is not going to be action based. You will have to follow the story which is more gothic and mental.

    Cain and Abel first born sons of Adam and Eve, Cain was a farmer Abel a Shepherd.... they both brought their offerings before God, God only regarded Abel's offering and Cain became so angry that he struck Abel down. God cursed Cain..... a bit of a quick explanation, the actual story is a little more involved. But hope you get the idea.

    Story of Cain and Abel from wiki:
    Cain and Abel are the first two sons of Adam and Eve. Cain, the firstborn, was a farmer and his brother, Abel, was a shepherd. The brothers made sacrifces to God; Abel's was a sheep he had raised and Cains was fruit from his garden. But God favored Abel's sacrifice instead of Cain's. Cain then murdered Abel out of jealousy so God punished Cain by condemning him to a life of wandering with the inability to be killed.

      Further context for the comic versions of Cain and Abel:
      Cain and Abel, as well as Lucienne (Lucien in the comics) are all pre-existing DC comics characters, but not of the sort that get involved in superhero shenanigans. Instead they were the "hosts" of anthology horror comics in the 1970s. Each issue of their respective titles started with these characters speaking directly to the reader to introduce the story being told that month. Cain hosted the House of Mysteries, Abel hosted the House of Secrets, and Lucien hosted Tales from Ghost Castle. When populating the Dreaming, Neil Gaiman decided to draw on these characters because it seemed appropriate to him that the residents of the Dreaming would be tellers of stories. Cain and Abel also still live in the Houses of Mysteries and Secrets, as depicted in the Netflix series.

    Cries at the passing/dissolution of this sweet gargoyle Gregory pale in comparison to those at the death of the horse Roach in The Witcher. The gargoyle was drawn as the most adorable creature he could be, but we knew him for just a couple of minutes and were given a bit of warning and a rationale for the death. Roach was just a regular horse, but we knew her/them for 1 and a half seasons, we got no warning and the death seemed senseless even in a design sense. I wonder if the Roach experience was in the periphery of conscious “lessons learned” for design team of this show. The adaptation circumstances and approach of the two shows have been quite different. That’s a treatise somebody else can write.

    Cain and Abel were (according to the Bible) the sons of Adam and Eve. Cain killed Abel one time. This is just legend playing off legend. Joanna Constantine is simply the feminization of John Constantine. I love this show.

    • @reverance_pavane
      @reverance_pavane 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually Joanna is a pre-existing character in the comic; a direct ancestor of John. Her actual role in the comic was what was shown in Episode 6 (although I expect it will be extended in the series from side comments made in the show about services being rendered). Due to decoupling the series from the extant DC universe (both to avoid confusion with a DC universe that was 30 years past and due to licencing issues with the use of many of the characters), Neil thought to extend the role of Joanna to cover John's brief role as well (in the original she died well before the modern era, unsuccessful in her quest). Unfortunately most of the fandom was expecting Hellblazer and were quite unhappy with the substitution (thinking that she was merely a gender-swapped version of the more famous John).

    Early biblical story. God was more pleased with Abel's offerings than he was with Caine's. Caine got jealous and murdered Abel. No, Abel did not get resurrected, this version of the Caine and Abel story is complete fiction.
