    I realy like that you put the extra effort in to give info on the planes themselves and find songs from the country of manufacturer. Sets you apart from others!

      I thought it was a nice change of pace, but I got dinged on copyright. Some of these songs were supposed to be public domain, but the recording company is getting all the ad revenue off this video.

      @@MaxAfterburner That's a real shame. TH-cam will do anything these days to avoid paying out on revenue - irrespective of the amount of effort one piles into their videos. I do hope it doesn't discourage you too much though; whilst I have only been watching your videos for a short while I have already picked up lots of tips that I can't wait to employ on my own models.

    I found the same thing with the Tamiya Mark Fit: It took several thin coats to get it to start to work. Personally I find laying down Mark Set first before the decal and Mark Sol afterwards. It's an extra step, but it does sink them into panel lines/rivets nicely.

      Hi Misha, people have been commenting on that, but the stars are only pointing slightly inboard per instructions. I think the camera angles may be making them look 180 degrees off. I'm thinking of replacing the stars and just have them aligned with the long axis of the the fuselage.

      Max_Afterburner Yes in scale comparison it looks more like a transport plane than a fighter. I saw Tornado, A10 and F16 next to it if i can recall it correctly. I remember that radar dome was painted white and it had nuclear warning sign - you know these 3 triangles in yellow and i still don't know why. it was a Belorussian plane that i saw in 2009 and tragically it crashed at airshow next day and both pilots died.

      @@gary851 Belarus was part of the USSR. After the collapse of all the planes were in this territory began to belong to this country. For example, when reuniting Germany and the GDR in modern Germany, in the territory of the GDR remained MiG 29. And the air force of this country used them until some period.

    The Su-27 is probably a more useful fighter because of its superior range and higher weapons payload but I always felt the MiG-29 edged it out in appearance. I just think it's a better-looking plane not that I'm saying Flanker is ugly, either. The LERX is larger and rounder on the MiG but the view out of cockpit is better in the Su-27. Su-27 like the F-15 will never sneak into a fight.
    The Russians, btw, appreciate the NATO names for these planes. They really fit the planes. Half the time in the past the codenames assigned to Soviet-era fighters were not so complimentary!
    It's funny that there are equally-owned numbers for MiG-29s and Su-27s in the US (2 apiece) but there are no Flankers currently on display in any museum in the US but there are at least 7 MiG-29s on display. Two of them are at Wright-Patterson AFB; 1 at Intel office, the other in the Cold War hangar of the USAF Museum.
    They definitely have been flying these planes over Area 51... There are photos taken from a distance with telescopic lens-equipped cameras but it's obvious the planes are there even if USAF doesn't admit it.

    Not a bad build. Big tip here which will improve things for you, try a gloss cote before you apply decals and wash, the decals will fix without the horrible silvering around the edges and the wash will be a lot easier to remove. Also did you notice you put the stars on the wings upside down.

    • @MaxAfterburner
      @MaxAfterburner  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks, but at 23:48 I do note that I put on a protective gloss coat. The stars are correct, it may be the angle of the camera view that is creating this illusion.

    Lovely build! Little tip: don't use the Tamiya metallics. You will get much better results with AK Xtreme metal, alclad or MRP metallics :) you really should try them out

    • @MaxAfterburner
      @MaxAfterburner  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, that's a problem I have in that I don't try other product lines. I tend to stick with the same paints and such.

    • @insanesebbl854
      @insanesebbl854 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Max_Afterburner haha I know that problem too good and i went the other extreme now: trying nearly every brand ending up with over 200 paints. But using other metallic products is something I dont regret :)

    Great metal work
    One trick I do when the kit comes with rubber tyres is to sand the surface to give that weathered look 😉

      Thanks again buddy! I liked the tires so much, I didn't want to "tarnish" them, but you're right, I should have given them a used appearance.

    For your wash? Do dip your cotton swab / paper towel in mineral spirits to wipe off the wash?

    • @MaxAfterburner
      @MaxAfterburner  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi John, I will dip the swab/paper towel in some mineral spirits if the weathering I have applied has already begun to dry and/or if I feel there is too much black oil paint laid down in an area.

    Nice, i personally favor the design of "soviet" aircraft, they have a much more aggressive look compared to our sleeker look (although the F-117a is totally badass i hope to get 1 to build at some point). In my top 5 of fav aircraft is the SU-35s.
    I did however notice that you may have forgotten to weather the radome? But still looks ridiculously amazing!

    • @MaxAfterburner
      @MaxAfterburner  ปีที่แล้ว

      I did some light smudging on the radome, but it may not have been picked up all that well by the camera.

      Hi Catto, I think you can find a way to retract the gear and close the doors, but there is no stand included.

    Wanted to comment about the stars, but I see some people commented already.
    The basic idea is: on the “soviet star”, the star is not randomly placed, but one “ray” is always pointing directly up. I never thought about it before this video, but this is basically intuitive for anyone who got (at least) his child years in Soviet Union.
    But where’s “up” when the star is applied to the wings? I checked with some photos/pictures/schemes, like авиару.рф/aviamuseum/aviatsiya/sssr/istrebiteli-2/istrebiteli-1960-g-1991-g/istrebiteli-okb-suhogo/mnogotselevoj-istrebitel-su-27/mnogotselevoj-istrebitel-su-27/, and yes, the “upwards position” is when you look at the plane from top to bottom, and the nose is pointing up.

    • @MaxAfterburner
      @MaxAfterburner  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Alex. I wanted to point the stars in the correct position as it seemed intuitive, but I followed the kit instructions which called for the wings stars to point slightly inward. I'm going to end up replacing the stars on the Su-27 shortly.

    Having recently finished the Academy Su-27, it's interesting to see that both kits have the same annoying nub on the upper wing. Many of the parts look familiar too, which is odd seeing as the scalemates website doesn't list the two kits as the same mold.

    • @markjackson7650
      @markjackson7650 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Gray they are the same mould mate. I have the academy one too and upon initial inspection it seems the fit is sketchy at best how did you find yours?

    • @xTheZapper
      @xTheZapper 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, well someone needs to update Scalemates!
      If they're they're same mold then that is good and (mostly) bad news. I also have this HB kit, so the good news is that the Dream Model photoetch that I forgot to use on the Academy should also fit this one, but the bad news being that *the fit on the Academy is shocking* in places. The leading edges are awful, the fuselage was quite twisted, I think there were dodgy seams around the cockpit (caused by the twisting), sink marks and ejector pin holes everywhere, and the upper surface of mine was covered in fine scratches. The missiles were a bit crappy so I actually used the ones from this Hobbyboss kit. A bonus is that the HB kit has the cool looking R-77 missiles with the grid fins, the pylons were nicer too.
      I only built the Academy because at the time I bought it, it was the only 1/48 Flanker around. Since then this Hobbyboss one came out, and the Kinetic Su-33 and the Kitty Hawk Su-35. I've also got those kits, so it'll be interesting to see how different they are. The Kitty Hawk and Kinetic were *OBVIOUSLY* different from the Academy when I had a rummage through the boxes, the Kinetic looks to be an order of magnitude higher quality, but a faint alarm bells started ringing when looking at the HB, even the cardboard sleeve the body sits in in the box is the same!
      Put it this way, I'd never build another Academy, but it the HB is based on it... oh dear. :'-(
      I'm worried now, I'm going to have a look through the HB box and see if all the painful memories come flooding back.

    I just finished this build (my second,newbie here),my first was the Tamiya f-14A and I can say that this one is pretty bad model…the wheels doesn’t hold strong and when I put down it’s always like they gonna get loose,actually one of them broke on one of the time I was working on other parts.The vertical and horizontal stabilizers don’t hold the position and I had to stick somehow in position with the aid of double side tape.
    The f-14A by Tamiya it’s a solid model when I take in my hands,the su 27 by hobby boss it feels like is gonna fall apart every time I pick it up.
    Probably I need more experience on buildings…if anyone had built this model from hobby boss please let me know how was the process and if you are satisfied or any other comments are appreciated!
