See, thats why i watch these videos: Its not the most desirable plane nor model, its not even the best possible build! But its all made (video and model) by someone who has a real connection to these planes, saw them and worked on them (at least F16s). You can feel that throughout the video and thats whats it makes these videos special. Thanks Tom, for another unique video and great build!
Hi ironspike171, thanks, glad you enjoyed! Definitely not the best build - I already have an unusually high number of "dislikes" on this Thud build already 😂
The F-105 has always been one of my favorite aircraft to build. My dad did some of the design work in the early 60s for some of the electronics cooling fans.
This is the best production model video I have ever seen. First and foremost, I like the fact that it’s narrated. And also, I really enjoy the photos and background story you give of the model before you begin. Also, like the fact that you provide facts about your subject matter during the build, I’m definitely a subscriber now !
Hi nachocdbz, thanks so much, glad you like them! Due to a number of considerations the model corner is currently on hiatus with nothing formally on the bench at this time. ✌️
My second model upon getting into this hobby was Revells 1/48 F-105D, to say that was too big of a bite for a new hobbiest armed with just a couple of small brushes in an understatement! It took me the best part of a year and lots of breaks, almost quitting the hobby, but I managed to get through that poor fitting kit and afterwards got a much more manageable Spitfire which reignited my interest in the hobby. I'd love to revisit the Thud now I've been to a decent standard with an airbrush for the past few years, and when I do I hope to make one as good as yours came out! Always had a soft spot for the Thud, such a beautiful jet that just screams supersonic design. It amazes me that this thing flew only 13 years after Republic first flew the P-47.... Incredible development that is lightyears apart from each other.
TheHarvHR, I guess we all start out "all thumbs" and a poor kitting fit doesn't help either. To keep up with it after a year is amazing and speaks of your perseverance to overcome. Your comment about the rapid acceleration of advancement in technology and engineering by Republic is such a good point, it is amazing! Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts! 🤩
Brings back so many memories of seeing those shark mouthed "WEASELS" of the 116 TFW out of Dobbins AFB Ga flying around here in north Ga. In fact, at 1:17 in the video it shows some of the WEASEL flight line at Dobbins AFB back in the early 80's. Unfortunatly, a photo of their last ANG flight. 😢 Good times! Awesome build of an Awesome aircraft! Outstanding job.
Hi Timothy, very thrilled you liked the outcome of the build and that it brought back memories for you of seeing the Thunderchief in action. Gone, but not forgotten. 🙂
Always a great day when there’s a new upload on this channel. Very early memories of the F-105 were seeing one on a popsicle stick at freedom park while growing up at nellis in the early 2000s. Too late to admire it while in the air but not too late to never admire it at all. Great job on this and can’t wait to see your next project!!!
Hey andrewm8924, thanks and Happy New Year! Yup, the last build of 2023 is complete. There's an F-105D and an F-105G on display about a one hour drive from where I live.
As a 10 yo kid in 1979 I had the pleasure of watching the Texas ANG do pattern work with F-105s at Carswell AFB from just outside the parameter fence. I've never had my ears so thoroughly blown away by the intense engine noise. Even Holding short of rnwy 11L at KTUS when two F-16s are pulling away in full burner doesn't seem quite as noisy. But then again my hearing is not what it was.
Hi there AndrewTubbiolo, that must have been something! When I'd do radar checks in a Viper near the end of 11L back in the day, the F-16 I was in would just shake whenever a couple (or even one) F-16(s) would start their takeoff roll in AB. 😵
@@MaxAfterburner One time I was holding short of 11L on Alpha and when two Vipers were pulling away my plane was shaking so much I watched a rivet below the canopy and just aft of the instrument panel, spin in place with the energy of the noise! Great times.
It’s always a pleasure watching your videos - the builds and the clips interspersed truly makes it a joy to watch. In many ways, you’re the Bob Ross of the Modelling world!
Absolutely beautiful work. I should pick up one of these models. The F-105 was such a good aircraft for what it did. I have read Viper Pilot and Hunter Killers by Dan Hampton, and I absolutely love those books. If you haven't read them, I highly recommend it.
Easily one of your best videos Tom. The weathering on the plane is just right. Great information as always about the build and aircraft. Loved the beautiful finish on the engine, and you know it's there. Really pleased you used two of my favourite brands of paint, namely GSI Creos Mr Hobby/Mr Color and Ammo by MiG. Great results. Enjoy your time off in 2024!
Hi Stephen, thanks and sorry you didn't get the notification right away. YT has been glitching today. Several comments and my responses to them have been suddenly duplicating on the feed and all my "Thumbs Up" that I've clicked on to those comments keep disappearing. Thrilled you liked this one too and I did like the Mr Hobby/Mr Color paints in particular. The colors were perfect for the Thud. Happy New Year, Mate!
As always Max another awesome video and build. A great way to start off 2024👍. One of my favorite model building channels. Looking forward to a great year of model building. Happy New Year Max to you and all of your viewers.
Thanks, dirkl9689. I'm glad you enjoyed the info banners. I try to find facts and stories that might best interest the viewer as they watch the build and painting of the model. 👍
Mr A Burner you've got a great looking F105 there. HOWEVER I had to skip the first 15ish seconds of the video as that dentist drill noise had me sweating and I'm sure my nerves was even shaking, I nearly complained to youtube . Happy New Year mate n keep up the great work - minus the drill noise hough
My uncle used to work on these in Vietnam, the only thing he ever said to me about Vietnam was every time these planes went on a mission he would pace until they came home, when one or more didn't come home it was very hard on him, some was because of the loss of the plane but mostly because the pilots were his friends.
An absolutely awesome build and a a favorite of mine and I must mention your video production is one of the best, that I've seen. Also there is a fairly recent documentary (say within the last 10 years) on the Thud should you have the time to hunt it out.The YGBSM motto has to be the best in aviation.
Hi kiwiruna9077, thanks, glad you enjoy all the work. It's getting pretty hefty on all the things I have to juggle and edit these days 🤯. I'll have to find that THUD documentary, thanks for the suggestion.
Hello mister max!i build the vulcan too, while i build the vads 20mm.i almost spend a half an hour.thats the trickiest subassembly i have ever build.with sticky greetings. Your fellow modellmate.christian
Enjoy watching your build videos.... quality work. Could you please tell me how you thin your Tamiya paints, both for airbrushing and hand brushing? Is there a secret for successfully hand brushing Tamiya paints? Thanks.
Hi davidlanham5914, for Tamiya airbrushing I usually start off a new bottle by thinning it up with X-22A to the lower indent on the inside of the jar. This was a tip Andy from his HHQ channel had described a long time ago and it has always worked for me. I figure it's actually close to 75% paint to 25% thinner. As for hand brushing, I'd like to know the secret too. I try with a full 100% un-thinned paint bottle, but it doesn't always work. I noticed that for this build that the Mr Hobby/Mr Color went on smoothly and no paint "lifting off" back onto the brush. Thanks for watching! 😄
Hi Philo, my Dad told me that Jim looked so sharp in his Marine Blues that the gals would practically swoon when he visited UM. My parents would lose their minds any time University of Michigan played Ohio State in football. "Go Blue" was always shouted from the rooftops 😆
Hi paulmoore5401, glad you liked the Thud model video. I probably used CA glue for the attachment of the bombs/missiles and pylons. It gives a strong bond quickly without having to fidget with the combinations too much. ⚓
Another beautiful build. I’m from South Vietnam and will never forget what sacrifices and heroics these men are made of. Btw, I’m curious. What do you do with all your finished models?
Hi 4629dt, thanks! The models reside in various locations where I live. I think some would be surprised where I keep some of the models they have seen on this channel. I should do a short video maybe. Some viewers might be amused while others might be triggered. 🤔
@@MaxAfterburnerPlease don’t be concerned about those who are “triggered”. The place to put them is where you want. You have great skills and are willing to share in a positive and humorous way. That’s what modeling is about
Hi TonyMac381, the three main colors were brands fairly new to me, so some dilution was a work in progress. For the MIG "Forest Green" there is no mixing necessary as it is airbrush ready straight from the bottle. The MrColor/Mr Hobby, I think I ended up at about 70% paint and 30% thinner for those. 🤔
Hi LSCModels, I have 5 ship model kits currently within the Max_Afterburner stash. Each ship build/video is a lot of additional work above the usual aircraft projects. Unfortunately, even for a small channel such as this the last naval build video performed below average expectations in views and "likes" which is the only "payment" I get for these very time (& money) consuming efforts. So, it may be a while if and when I resume the channel. 🤔
@@MaxAfterburner I understand that. Making videos aint easy. Takes a lot of patience , time. Ill be watching your vids buddy. Have fun building man, All the best.
Hi ole5539, I did some research for you. That pilot in the interview was William P. Robinson who served as an F-105 pilot with the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing and the 13th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Korat Royal Thai AFB, Thailand, from May to December 1966. The 4 SAM sites he describes being destroyed occurred on July 5, 1966. He received the Air Force Cross for his actions on that day. He passed away in 1988.
@@MaxAfterburner Thank you! Well beyond the call of duty. By the way, excellent build. These were among the best of my generation. I haven't built a plane model in many years, maybe I'll have a go at one. Thanks again.
hello, your build of this aircraft as always beautiful! do you have a 1/48 ww2 bomber in the works?? would love to see you take one on, just one question, when you shoot glosscoat and dull, what is your clear to thinner ratio?
Hi Walter, thanks. When using the Tamiya products I try to thin the gloss by anywhere from 20%-50% depending on what I'm doing. For the flat clear XF-86 (which is almost like syrup) I try to go 50% thinned for airbrushing. I have 4 model projects on deck currently with a WWII era bomber at #3 in the pattern. 👍
Hi antiheldd.3081, I'm not aware of any particular guides out there, though they may exist. There are many Sci-Fi spacecraft builders on the internet that might provide you the best guidance through their build videos. Star Wars, of course, is a popular subject and easy enough to find many videos that might appeal to you. I'd like to do an X-Wing from the original 1977 movie again myself. 😎
Just start building! Bandai makes Star Wars models, and they are some of the best you will find anywhere. A well designed kit is a great way to start because you don't get discouraged when things don't fit properly. As a bonus they fit so well you don't even need to use glue...
I find it sad that the kit manufacturer didn't appreciate the difference in the fin between the single and twin seat F-105. Because of the increase in yaw about the centre of gravity they needed to increase the area of the Fin. They did this by extending the chord above the kinked area thus smoothing it out quite a bit. If you examine photos it becomes very obvious when you know what to look for.
It's a great build with wonderful results. But am I mistaken or did you paint the undersurfaces with Flat White? I believe it should be 36622 Grey. But still a great build. Nice weathered results with the pre-shading. Thanks for sharing!
Hi heathermartin7403, yes, these greys are so close to white that I tend to apply a flat white coat anyway. I also know that I'm going to add a wash and different levels of grime that will eliminate the starker white. So, I usually don't bother with the underside "greys". Glad you enjoyed the Thud, I always look back on these thinking I could have done better 🤔
Hi 呂し工卞亡廾と, I've found that the Japanese destroyers in 1/350 scale are quite small. Tamiya only manufactures the Shimakaze in 1/700 scale which is even smaller! I don't think I could do work competently at such a tiny scale. 🤔
Hi ECLEAT, I can put that on my list. But, I'm not sure if YT is still trying to find ways to demonetize/delete videos that have anything to do with "that country" in their unpredictable judgements. At any rate, like/comment/subscribe to keep the channel alive. 🙂
There was a song made about the Thud. It's a bit hokey but think it's appropriate here. Written by Dick Jonas who was a USAF pilot of Vietnam era and has a few albums with songs relating to that life style. sort of an early Dos Gringos: th-cam.com/video/RULJiNPN-Cg/w-d-xo.html
Nice build, however; the Fins on the Centerline Fuel Tank are not right. They do not angle back in a Sweep position, they are a 90 degree Stright angle.
Hi 2-Hands, excellent observation! I never noticed and I just now had to look very hard for a an image that proves your point. A mistake by Hobby Boss and now, myself 😛
You’re a fan of Officer Greg? Who inew? Kinda weird that several videos on this plane hit my suggested list in the last few days, and here’s your build. Strange how many planes of that era were and still are considered ugly and got ugly names. THUD, aardvark, these are not names you give planes you like the looks of. Still, they did their jobs.
One of the most beautiful airframes to my eyes...
Hey shaymcquaid, a very sleek looking jet ready to do Mach 2! 😄

Looing real nice brother. When do you plan on building another ship, and if you do which one?
Anyone know who the pilot is that eliminated the 4 SAM sites in 25 minutes? starts at 35:37 approximately.
Very impressive build--especially as that HB kit is not the nicest to build up.
Hi CAPNMAC82 , thanks much and a Happy New Year to you! 🎉🎆
Hi, can you recommend a starter guide for building and painting models? For a total noob who wants to build star wars ships.
The original Little Shop of Horror? Yaaaas! Freund-lieben, nice lady...
Hi Bob, glad you enjoyed the visit to this dentist. 😊
I know there are 2 F-105's in Florida, over 40 Preserved around the world. I hear they may also have 1/3 scale RC planes too.
Hi Thunder_6278, the Thunderchief is such a popular jet even to this day! There's a F-105D and a F-105G about an hour's drive away from me too. 👍
Ryan, if you ever start a thud restoration fund, let me know, will contribute. Idea: recreate 'pussy galore' Yeoowwww!
You don't have to sensor it... "You've Gotta be SHITTING ME!!!" Anyway, the kit Looks like a scaled-down version of Trumpeter's 1/32 kit.
Just trying to keep it a little classy and in case some kids drop by...
nice
Hi eduardogarcia-bz9kt, thanks much!
@@MaxAfterburner have a awesome new year! thanks for your videos I love them
👍
Can u do tamiya shimakaze
Hi 呂し工卞亡廾と, I've found that the Japanese destroyers in 1/350 scale are quite small. Tamiya only manufactures the Shimakaze in 1/700 scale which is even smaller! I don't think I could do work competently at such a tiny scale. 🤔
動画観て予習しています♫🎉
👍
Good. Pleas next MIG-31.
Hi ECLEAT, I can put that on my list. But, I'm not sure if YT is still trying to find ways to demonetize/delete videos that have anything to do with "that country" in their unpredictable judgements. At any rate, like/comment/subscribe to keep the channel alive. 🙂
@@MaxAfterburner You have to build 31 МИГ, that's your destiny, joke.Аlready subscribed to the channel.
🎼"I love my Thud, and she loves me too"🎼
👍👍😄😇👏🎈
Hi roncasa4042, 😁
Weasel Thud.
@@MaxAfterburner No problem, just keep on building models.
I enjoy your videos and "Happy New Year" to you, your Family and your Friends.
👍
It's strange that "we" built the model, yet I don't feel like I did anything.
You did good 🫡
You’re a fan of Officer Greg? Who inew?
Kinda weird that several videos on this plane hit my suggested list in the last few days, and here’s your build.
Strange how many planes of that era were and still are considered ugly and got ugly names. THUD, aardvark, these are not names you give planes you like the looks of. Still, they did their jobs.
Hi markfergerson2145, Officer Greg...?
The Thunderchief's design and shape seem to appeal to a lot of airplane lovers around the world. 🤩
Could you build models and not show 50 year old scenes? Just mho
