This video adds credit to my theory that the only reason why Ronda Rousey lost to both Holly Holmes and Amanda Nunes was the fact that she abandoned her judo roots and tried to exchange punches against those two beasts. If she had gone for the clinch and the armlock, she most probably would have won both fights. In her case, becoming more "versatile" actually turned her into a lesser fighter.
I'd like to add that her foot work is top notch as well further reinforcement of your theory because she wouldn't need punching to set up her throws die to her ability to potentially Dodge punches and put herself in perfect position for throws
Yeah, she had a cluster of fights where she was K.Oing the girls with her striking, and started trusting her hands, but ran into some even bigger strikers than she was. No one could mess with her on the ground though. Both Amanda, and Holly knew that.
Exactly. Crazy looking at her record, everything is submission armbar. Submission armbar. Submission armbar. Submission armbar. Her problem is she changed her game plan. Her game plan should always have been to stick with the judo and armbar. Learn the boxing fine but don't abandon the game plan that made you successful.
@@garybaker466 Totally , dude. Just look at Khabib - the guy never changed his fighting style. Every adversary knew what the guy did...yet nobody was able to stop him.
@@in2foodThey did not figure her out, she just fell in love with her boxing not realising her incompetence on that field. If she were to stick to her judo and submissions she would have dominated
@The Afflicted The praise was undeserving. "Making it look so easy", well no shit. Watch anyone with about 1-2 of training, and they could perform the same showing. My point is, in no way was this video impressive enough for such praise.
@The Afflicted you obviously don't train yourself to not have understood my point. These moves are beginner status. The transitions are basic fundamentals.
@The Afflicted Well you must just be missing some logical analysis. Don't get me wrong, Ronda has great technique when it come to grappling, but in no way is this showcase showing how advances she actually is. As I stated before, someone with less than two years of training could do this.
@Steve Mellinger - Imagine being on a date with her....a criminal tries to rob you.....and she beats on them like a red headed stepchild. What can you do but say , "Thanks baby."
I think the sport adapted to her. Once you know how to handle Mike Tyson's peek-a-boo, it's harder to dominate as much. Same with Ronda. MMA is still pretty young, people can come in with a specialty that others aren't ready for. Once they adapt, everyone can counter you.
jsmall10671 I agree. I think in any sport you have to keep trying to improve and evolve yourself, especially when your at the top. I think she got complacent. She was a one trick pony that never evolved her game into something more. She was very good at her one trick but Holm and Nunes showed up and finally countered it and exposed her badly. Then instead of coming back better she quit.
@@tatumergo3931 That too, for sure. But I think those two go hand-in-hand. Her ego made her think she could stand and brawl with professional strikers.
@@alanfrost75 . Well she could have become a decent striker had she had the right person to teach and coach her, but she fell for a swindler. Afterall judo does contain atemi and there are many judokas who have learned and master the art of striking.
nice display, and no its not staged, its a demo of throwing to ground locks, holds etc,the guy allows her to demonstrate the throwing and finishing ground moves ,its not a contest bout, rhonda shows very good transitions ,like her variations -ex judo champ
Nope, it is pre arranged! Notice Joe never initiated any attacks or moved very little to block throws or sweeps. Just a demo of basic throws that any real brown belt level can do
I never doubted her skill one bit, but I lcould never stand how despicably arrogant she always is and was beyond delighted when Holm and Nunes showed her that she is not invincible.
When you watch Her doing judo, at the past olympics, she is quite humble. I am very sure, when her promoters got a hold of her, they told her she needed to start acting tough in front of the cameras! Look at wrestling. There is quite a bit of acting involved. Wouldn't you agree?
Lol. Lol. Lol. As I wish Keanu Reeves would play with me like that on the mat as he prepares for John Wick. As a black belt, I enjoy his moves in these movies.
That woman could kick a man's ass... plain and simple. I know this was a demo; but holy shit... I've practiced Judo and have never seen the 'arm bar with an anke.' Her ganxsta!
DeLaRicci ??? What.? She is not even the best “female judoka in mma” Kayla Harrison won Olympic gold, and does Mma, and there have been many male Olympic medalist “including gold” that have fought in mma... soooo, she was good, but far from the best.
Too bad RR never learned the number one lesson of any Martial Art. Humility and Self Respect for Others. We learn more from our mistakes than we ever learn from our accomplishments. The heart of a true champion/warrior/judoka is how you react to defeat. In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king. Rhonda was the only one with sight, for a little while anyway, then the Preachers Daughter popped her make believe world with a perfectly timed head kick and the Lioness sealed it with a relentless attack and Miss Rousey never gave anyone their respect and disappeared only to emerge in the fake reality of the WWE. There is a lesson there for anyone wishing to see it. You are judged by how you treat the lowest among us.
I'd argue that and say that she did that. I am not a Ronda fan but I think she did learn humility and respect through martial art, but through MMA and the UFC she learn cockiness, bravado and got fame and fortune out of it. When you get to her level and people are saying you're the greatest fighter on the planet, you can beat dudes 2x your size and all that, it gets to you. I think MMA and the UFC changed her into something different.
First, it was 100%.Her coaching staff's failure to teach her how to block punches! I'm a female 2nd blackbelt judo sensei. I watched the Holmes fight and cringed at every punch cus judo is not punches. It looked like her coach was paid off by Holmes' staff. Ignorant coaching.
If she would've did this when she fought Holmes and Nunes instead of standing with them she would still be the champion. She would've been the female version of khabib.
She is so happy about herself like it was a real.. And its so ovies the let her do everything.. Im not surprise that after she loss twice she broke and quite

List of techniques for enthusiasts:
0:39 - Sode Tsurikomi Goshi
0:50 - Yoko Guruma => the ground pin is (I believe) called Yoko Shiho Gatame
1:02 - Harai Goshi => Juji Gatame (armbar)
1:18 - Tai Otoshi => Juji Gatame
1:50 - Yoko Gake (not 100% sure tho) => Kata Gatame transition to Kesa Gatame and Ude Gatame (armlock)
2:07 - Ippon Seoi Nage => Juji Gatame
2:25 - Sode Tsurikomi Goshi => Juji Gatame
Arigato gazaiyamasu
Yoko means side and Gake means sweep. So I think you're right for the most part.
#2 is sumi gaeshi
#3 would be more hane goshi because she didnt sweep but launched uke
#4 would be more uki goshi because she used a shallow hip

I love how quickly she transitions to the arm bar once she hits the ground
Yup, that was her go-to move back in the day. Eventually, however, the other girls figured her out and the sport continues to evolve.

Much respect. She is a world class judoka.
Her mother had a MBA, MA, PhD and a gold medal in 1984 world judo championship, all before she gave birth to Ronda. :-)

She is hyper great in judo. Respect
As judo should be...looks effortless. Except for the years of training and study. Congratulations on making it look so easy :)

I honestly think her biggest flaw in MMA was straying away from her grappling roots and thinking she was a great boxer.
Agree, Rhonda looked good hitting the pads, but once she got hit, all her boxing training went out the window.
Her biggest flaw in MMA was the flaw that everyone who gets to the top falls for, and that's Ego.
