The Outlander PHEV represents a fusion of the EV technologies developed by Mitsubishi for models such as the i-MiEV, S-AWC technologies honed from the Lancer Evolution, and SUV know-how gained from the Montero. The highlight of the all-new Outlander PHEV is the use of Mitsubishi's sophisticated PHEV system. It uses two full-time, high-output electric motors separately mounted at the front and rear axles to instantly supply torque on demand for incredibly responsive performance with agile all-wheel drive. This integrated control system delivers incredible power and control. By optimally managing Active Yaw Control (AYC), Anti-lock braking system (ABS) and Active Stability Control (ASC) with Traction Control (TCL) - which now offers enhanced traction on all road conditions - it brings out the full potential of Twin Motor S-AWC without compromising safety, comfort or fuel efficiency. When desired, the driver can press the Twin-Motor 4WD LOCK button to simulate locking of a center differential and optimally distribute torque to all four wheels for improved traction and stability.

I have one of these cars.
By far the most fuel efficient car I've ever owned.
Basically free travel around London.
There are too many gadgets/options to mention. I adore technology, Outlander PHEV keeps me happy.
Maybe in the city where the plug in is enough

That's so funny, we just did this today at the Salon International de l'Auto de Québec, looks like you had much nicer conditions to be able to test it out, the snow course was pretty flat today.
My Mitsubishi Mirage 2021 eats right through the snow. Incredible brand of vehicles.

My mom has succesfully driven her Toyota Prius C over snowy mountains in Southern Oregon. At the end of the day it is all about the driver.

I'd like to see some deep snow tests myself. In this video? You literally can drive in that kinda snow with something like fwd Toyota Avensis no problem. We got about half a meter (and more) snow last winter, and it was way worse than shown here. But my wives car (avensis) handled it just as easily, as any other car would. So kinda poor test to show what this car could do, when every car could do it in this shallow melted snow.
@@finnishfatman nah my dad got a 2016 outlander with an S-AWC. Today we had one of the worst blizzard storms in Ontario ever. The snow level reached 55 centimeters and most cars got stuck, even all wheel drive cars. But my fathers car went perfectly fine. In fact, it didn't get stuck at all.
@@abdelalimalfar2633 I bet your fellow drivers had summer or all-season tires, while the Finnish dude's wife got winter tires, mostly no need for 4WD. Funny video otherwise, there is not a single car here that couldn't drive away from that yard with even a bit older winter tires...

Love to see a test with the Outlander PHEV, Subaru Forester, CRV, Rav4, With all the same snow tires, such as Michelin X-Ice. Including stop tests especially.

I have 2017 SEL, and I'm very surprised how this car drive in snow, that's really good traction system
Looks like common winter conditions from city where I grow up. Also to get to ski fields or around countryside wasn't often any different but even worse. No one had 4wd cars, winter tires were good enough. Snow chains were barely used, usually only for steep roads. Btw I love to have one of those or quite like Mitsubishi Delica D5 4WD for it's space. Great family car. Had one 4wd Delica diesel manual with low gear ratio previously and love it. Boxy very capable camper van/truck which taken me where most cars can't go.

Looks great in snow. However the real test is the Diagonal ramp test. The gas V6 Outlander does well, but what about this one? The Rav4 Hybrid failed but the Outlander PHEV has much stronger rear motor.
How easy would this vehicle be to flip ? just got one a few days ago coming from a veloster... quite different ! the handling is soo touchy I find tho, I turn the wheel even the slightest and feel like I'm going to go flying off the road !
Hey Guys, where is your diagonal test of this phev mitsu, it was already May, do you also do it in reverse or backing up the car in that angle, see who will meet the best AWD.

I would also like to see this test with a phev. ..I got quite hung up in mine, when both fron tyre got hung up in the air and the rears didn't have the power to pull it out of the situation. ..neither of the rears spun out at any point..and yes had troed all modes... traction off and 4wd on just to confirm. ...a simular test would be great to see if it is a programming s-awc issue???
Sad to say it failed the diagonal test on the phev outlander only not the regular outlander.

I would be more impressed if they stopped half way, then finished the track.

looks like it performs better when moving fast,unlike the slow diagonal test at low speed,maybe its need better drive train software update.
this thing has so many drive modes that each review should specify how it was set up to drive.
Man that's pretty cool. I got a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander GT and I wish I was there in that snow lol....the Outlander is really worth the money to own and it is the only 4WD SUV out there with two electric motors that is below $40,000. With the two electric motors it can get up to 198hp easy and it's pretty cool to be able to automatically switch on your own from ev mode to 4WD and then gas mode. And when it is in 4WD there is close to no gas used because it uses both electric motors to turn the wheels. I know I got the gas version because I bought mine before the PHEV came out and I would definitely buy the PHEV GT Outlander if anything were to happen to my SUV for sure..it is worth it to buy one
in the parking lot were you in AWD-snow mode or 4 Wheel lock?
Need a 17kwh battery pack to get longer range in EV and allow the battery to power both motors so it can accelerate without engine kick in until it is low.
I would love to see the Outlander PHEV on a Diagonal Test. Thinking of getting one as my next vehicle.

Randolph Paul did you get it? I have a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander GT and it's great. I took it on a dirt path over here in Southern California and it handled it like it was nothing! I highly recommend you getting this...try to shoot for the GT PHEV with all the technology if you plan to keep it for a long time. For me when I buy a car I go all in because plan to keep it for the long term so I don't want to get a base model and regret it later when I could have had all the tech for a little bit more. Hope you bought it and enjoy it😎

In your video he said it's good to leave all the driving aid systems on in deep snow.
Yet the engineers at Lincoln in a different video I watched said it's best to turn traction control off in deep snow.
So which is it? I'm getting confused?

Listen to the Lincoln rep at the 9:00 min mark and the 9:30 min mark.
Here is our point of view on that! On this special course, the traction control could stay on since we had a hard pack snow launch pad. In a situation where you want to get out of a snow bank, sometimes it's better to leave the traction system on so that you don't sink your vehicle to the point of no return! If you confident that momentum is gonna be the key, forget about those and turn off everything! Note that the AWD system doesn't react the same for each vehicle! it's not the same and it's easy to get lost in the reaction comparison! On this one, when stability is off, it's way more permissive than other SUV that will bring back the driving aid at the first controlled drift! Hope it help you :)
Deep snow???
Mitsubishi engineers never heard of 3 roller test? Poor suspension articulation and lack of 100% torque vectoring with traction make AWD garbage in many situations. Ground clearance is around 8.1 and not too many accessories besides spacers which may provide a couple of additional inches, but still its an AWD vehicle for soccer mamas.
doesn't look like a fair test, you have brought in a bunch of snow on flat ground. take the vehicle to the mountains in the snow to see how it fairs with snow, mud & uneven steep ground
It’s a fair test since there is no mountain in a city or on a highway here
Deep snow huh? That's something you could drive your average 2wd car around without effort really. And I mean that literally, because when we had over half a meter snow here last winter and some roads were in really bad shape, because they weren't plowed properly (more snow than shown in this video), we drove my wifes avensis on them no problem. Sure, in Finland you gotta use dedicated winter tires during the winter, so I could imagine someone never experienced those think this is impressive. In summer tires... well, that isn't deep snow in this video, so perfectly doable in 2wd, if you know how to drive in snow anyway. Mitsu might be nice car, not saying that, but this video just is poor example to show any cars capabilities. Only impresses those who never experienced snow or know how to drive in it.
In real snow outlander phev is very very bad

In short: bigger drive battery, independent electric motor control, S-AWC software & completely different Hybrid drivetrain.
The Rav4 Hybrid has a tiny 1.6 kWh battery operating at 240V nominal. MG2 (front motor) makes 141hp & MGR (rear motor) makes 67hp, but the rear motor never really gets the full 67hp that with the battery alone due to its low voltage. The Rav4 Hybrid therefore would have to spin up its 2.5L gas engine to produce the extra power, but since the engine is directly connected to the front wheels, the power just gets wasted at the front axles via Toyota's power-split device which is great for fuel economy & smooth gas/electric drive, but terrible for getting power down. The software of i-AWD is pretty poor so the rear axles never can get enough power or grip to do the diagonal test.
The Outlander PHEV has a 12 kWh battery operating at 300V nominal. S61 (front motor) makes 80hp and Y61 (rear motor) makes 80hp which is a lot more balanced & the rear axle is stronger. The rear axle is also produces more torque than the front axle. The Outlander PHEV 2.0L gas engine is connected mainly to a generator motor to either charge or assist in electric power generation to the 300V drive battery - at low speed it is never connected to the drive wheels. Therefore Mitsubishi can implement S-AWC to independently drive both S61 & Y61 motors and use brake-torque to send power to whichever wheel has grip, making it superior to the Toyota system.

Trades46 when outlander' battery will be depleted it will behave same as rav4, and don't forget that toyota is pure hybrid and not plugin hybrid. It has different chemistry in its batteries which are able to deliver great amount of power for a short period of time.
Anyway, none of them can be considered off-road vehicles without proper differential locks and low ranges. Snow will be no problem with good winter tires.
i'm on my second mitsubishi....both outlanders (2016 and 2017) Horrible build quality. 4 months into owning it , the ABS module started leaking lots of brake fluid....destroyed all the paint in engine bay and subframe. Mitsubishi said too bad. Now , brand new car with exposed sheet metal ...will rust in a year. Lots of other issues with the car also. side view mirror cracked in half while driving on highway...never seen something like that in my life...nobody believes me...including the dealer. Interior squeaks and rattles after few months of fine pavement driving. Long warranty only looks good on paper...when things go wrong, they don't want to know you exist. Their warranty seems like a marketing tool. I wanted something different than the usual honda and toyota....big costly mistake on my part. also, their dealerships are 3rd world...1 mechanic, 1 service rep..etc.....mom/pop feel when you deal with them. i live in fort lauderdale , so lots of dealers around....all with the same feel....subpar. Good news is they never feel crowded...show rooms are ghost towns. For what you get , their pricing should be way under the competition....by a 1/4 , just to stay in business. Both my cars averaged 15 mpg combined ....for a small suv ( i gave mitsu a shot because of long financing deals they had....6 years at 0 apr....wasn't worth it.
Very hard to believe that! I have a 2017 , over 50.000 miles already , 1 long trip to Florida, never a problem so far, excellent in snow, and sand at Daytona Beach, city 26 mpg, highway about the same 26-27 ...SEL model fully loaded... love it, my other car is a brand new Buick Enclave...2019 , still pick the Mitsubishi over it
don't buy mitsubishi...i've owned two and they breaks down all the time. bought them brand new with 10 year warranty. They won't fix them under the warranty....it's a sham...you'll need to spend your money on lawyers to have these guys fix their garbage. I've lost soo much sleep and money over this situation. Don't be me.

Traded my 09 gts of 2009 after being an owner for 14 years! With regular maintenance like oil, etc. the car never had big issues nor repairs out of the ordinary.
