It would be quite interesting to see if Toru Furuya reprises the voice of Mario in a Japanese dub for the upcoming Mario movie. As of now, there’s no Japanese dub in the teaser trailer for the upcoming movie and when there is a Japanese version, it’s only the English voice acting with Japanese subtitles.

Anything other than the screechy Italian stereotype voice that he's had since the N64 days. But yeah Captain Lou was actually a really, really good Mario. The show was insipid but he fit the character like a glove.
I didn't even realize that Peter Cullen the same guy who voiced Optimus Prime did the Mario voice in the 1986 animated cartoon. My favorite probably Lou Albano I think he did a decent job.

I feel like you're not seeing what the criticism is about... its not about Mario not sounding like Charles Martinet. Its about Mario sounding too close to just Chris's normal speaking voice. Hell, he sounded like he was phoning it in. Mario is a video game icon as much as Mickey Mouse is in animation; hell would even raise within the fandom if Mickey does not have that iconic high pitch voice, so why cant Mario have the Italian/Brooklyn voice?
