Shark fin antenna install

In this video I show you how to install a shark fin style antenna for your car its really easy and straight forward.

After trying this aerial for a while I've come to the conclusion that I wouldn't recommend it, it makes the radio chip in and out all the time and it's really frustrating when trying to listen to the radio. I've recently taken it off my car and put back the stock aerial. I really liked how it looked on the car but the performace is just not good, maybe if you modify it, it will be better but I'm not going to. Maybe there is a company that makes a high quality version of this type of aerial and maybe theirs are better but the cheap ones are not very good. Hopefully this has help one of you who were considering buying one :)

Apparently there’s another type where you’ll have to remove the headliner to install and totally replaces the whole antenna. Look for a FAKRA socket antenna on AliExpress if you’re interested.

I bought and fitted one from eBay too and the radio also drops out now and again. I've thought about fitting a signal booster but that's as far as it's got. Mine had a different wiring connector. It meant taking off the head liner to fit it which I tried but the aerial fixing nut was too awkward to get too without having to take the headliner off completely. I ended up adapting the wire to fit in much the same way as you did. Also mine had more of a curve so it didn't sit on the roof properly. After running it over a sheet of smooth sandpaper it eventually fitted

When you switch from a passive (long) aerial to a shark fin aerial, you need to power the shark fin with 12v on the center core. The shark fin is an active aerial, like a DAB antenna. This usually the blue wire in an aftermarket loom.

This was also a passive antenna but just in the shape of a shark fin it was pretty cheap but I thought it would make the car look a bit more modern. But thanks for your comment I did learn something :)

Thanks mate, been thinking about getting either a polo or golf put as my first car but all the older versions have the antennas and I wanted to buy one but I definitely will be to make it look like the newer versions!

I have seen those kits, but how do they perform at the Car wash?
Pretty harsh conditions If the roll goes over it.
I doubt it will held well

With the double sided tape that comes with it, it would most likely come off, but if you buy a good brand double sided tape then it will stick on alot better and should be able to survive powerwash/hand wash, I've never used one of the war washes that have the rollers so I'm not to sure how harsh they are.

I just want it for looks and dont use the radio i only use bluetooth, would it effect that?
