  • Probably because I spend so much time filming time attack, the mentality of "needing to be the fastest" seeps into my driving when I go on track. Earlier this year, that mentality bit me. But I got to go back and redeem myself.

    I was at my first big track event in my EVO years ago. I had done a bunch of autocross events. My first hot lap with an instructor and cold tires I went into a corner a little quick and got some lift off oversteer. I kept maintenance throttle and dialed in some opposite lock and my instructor yelled "Lift! Lift! Lift!" I didn't lift. Once things settled down I explained that EVO's (at least mine) have lots of lift off oversteer and you can pull out of minor over steer by adding a little throttle. I didn't get off line at all but if i had fully lifted we would have spun 100%. I ended up being cleared for solo driving by the end of the day, great experience.

I had gotten my new suspension setup and was being cocky on some mountain roads and spun out at eighty on a sweeper. I came out clean, but it was too close to not coming out of it at all. I consider myself lucky as hell to have had me and my car unharmed. It was a much-needed reality check. Its been a battle building back up my confidence, but I take it all a lot more seriously now and wanna push myself in a safe environment. Keep fighting the good fight, and keep knocking off those seconds 💪💪 fantastic video as always!

    You paused too long before attempting to correct when you went off track. Also both feet in once you are going to go off. Don't try to save it at that point. Just try to slow down. You lucked out with the amount of runoff! Maybe try pushing 10/10th at autocross to learn the feel at the limit then work your speed up gradually at track days.
    Also, what are you running for rear toe? Consider a tiny bit of rear toe in for stability.
    Edit: Just watched the second half of the video. You might still be pushing the car beyond your skill set at this point. I'd be careful with going to wide tires so quickly - yes the limit is higher with wide sticky tires but it's just going to mask any driver errors and communicate less/require a faster reaction if one gets past the limit. Might be better to learn on the old set.

I've hung up my cycle helmet. I've recently purchased a 09 Subaru STI hatch. I've slowly been putting together the right components to do some track Days. Suspension, wheels & tires. I'm in the process of putting a IAG stage 2 block in it. Going to run a stage 2 tune as of now but the block is capable of 550 to the wheels. I'll be around 320hp to the wheels when done I think. Hope I can get to a track day this fall. My track is Mid-Ohio. Thanks again for the inspiration 👏🏼👌🏼👍🏼

    If you feel unsure about high speed oversteer try dailing out some negative camber on the front. This will create earlier understeer. Another way to get rid of early oversteer is removing(!) the rear Sbar and slightly lowering rear tire pressures. All these tweeks will make the car more predictable on the limit.

    Coming off of a hill is when you lose all the down force you had when you were climbing, many drivers have a issue when the car becomes unloaded. This is why we have hill climbs not descents, gravity is a great friend when you want to go fast as it pushes down on the car.

Carry 2-3 more kph out of that turn and you have it for the whole backside, as well as braking probably 100ft later at the end, but most importantly is carrying as much speed as possible onto the longest straights.

    I flipped a car at a track day with an off that looked a lot like yours. My wheels dug in and the car started tumbling. If it’s clear that you’ve lost it, immediately go both feet in. Also consider not hooking your thumbs in and around the steering wheel like that, because if the front wheels catch something it’ll break one or both of your wrists (one of mine broke). Instead of looping them around the wheel, point your thumb “up” in relation to the wheel and use the bulge on the wheel at the 9 and 3 position for grip.

Track tuition is great and all but its when it gets out of shape you cant buy enough experience! As some have said before and as you now know, oversteer can so easily be caught in an awd car if you know to keep your foot in and know to not overcorrect with too much counter steer. Fantastic video, you captured the feelings of racing so well; my heart beating fast just watching this. I just recently started autocross'ing my Fiesta ST after doing the octane academy. Can't recommend it enough. I'm still very slow, but there is nothing like racing against the clock.

    Here are some tips if you dont mind:
    Try using a lower gear for those slower corners. By the sound of the engine youre way too low on revs. You will feel the engine come to life. Especially because its a turbo. Turbos hate low revs.
    Try working on quicker shifts. I have a low hp car and chase more powerfull cars, quickshifting is what gets them. Also being in the right gear more often.
    Start practicing left foot braking on the street. When you get a feel for it start using it on the track on those one gear corners instead of lifting off. No releasing throttle mean no losing boost. When you release the brake youll feel a slingshot.
    Try rolling up those windows. You cannot comprehend how important aero is.
    Almost forgot, someone in the comments mentioned tire pressures. Try going lower but only to a point where you still have good feedback. Youd be supprised how low race tires are driven on tracks. Google it, and try it on your own by feel.
    And great driving by the way. Respect for your faster every time mentality.

      1. EVO's with stock turbos make tons of torque as low as 3000 RPM. 2. Quicker shifts are well and good but EVO's also require a little mechanical sympathy, especially the 6 speed in his car, 3. rolling up the windows is not allowed at MANY HPDE events. I'm sure they require windows down at this event.

    • @fromthegods78
      @fromthegods78 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WTFNoNamesLeft2 All cars lose power as the revs drop, especially turbos. The car goes to almost 3000 RPM when a downshift would put it in ~5000 when the evo goes to 8000. That is way off toque range.

    • @WTFNoNamesLeft2
      @WTFNoNamesLeft2 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fromthegods78 Yep, but on a race track it's very frequently faster to NOT downshift especially in a car with a power-band like a stock turbo evo.

    • @fromthegods78
      @fromthegods78 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WTFNoNamesLeft2 those evos were notorious for having massive turbo lag.

    • @WTFNoNamesLeft2
      @WTFNoNamesLeft2 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fromthegods78 I had one for 10 years. Redline is at 7k and they make tons of torque at 3k and are fully spooled up at 3500 to 4000 with a stock turbo. Modern turbo cars are making full torque at sometimes under 2500 so by comparison the evo spools late but go check out some dynos... the 4g63 makes great torque way below 4k on a stock turbo.

    Tyres make so much difference but i also think you need some more aero to help that downforce. especially on the front.
