I know people will ask why I didn't swap to a 5-speed: biggest reason was wanting to keep competing that weekend. TRE had another 6-speed on hand, no 5-speed. And 5-speeds require different shifter cables which we also did not have.
Hey that's my 6 speed that's there at T.R.E getting done up along with my transfer case. Jon told me to find a 5speed as well or get a dog box because the 6 speed gears are to small to hold the torque. The 6 speed is only rated for 290- 350lbs torque. I'm looking but they are hard to find! T.R.E is the best! #TEAMRIP.. Also Jon said the Oem fluid isn't the same formula. He recommends Redline shockproof. Don't get the heavy shockproof as it only works for drag applications and also doesn't work well in the winter!

Being a 2005 Evo MR 6-speed owner I've always been told to run the OEM fluid for reliability. Never heard that Mitsubishi changed up the fluid composition... if so I still have the original fluid new in the cans for backup. Aftermarket company needs to step up and redesign higher steel strength gears for the 6-speed instead of having to go 5-spd swap.
if you’ve hit a plateau with your lap times:
instead of having that idea in your head of faster faster faster that makes you overdrive the car,
go out with the goal of driving the car smoother. try to drive the smoothest lap you can and don’t look at the timer.
this is my personal trick that alway works for me
100% this. Every time I force myself to go faster I slow down, when I calm down and focus on smooth inputs I always knock off my best times.

Seeing a community of car enthusiasts come together and help each other out kinda brings a tear to my eyes
This always happens at motorsport events and it's my absolute favorite thing about them. I blew an engine during qualifying on a championship deciding event on the opposite side of the country, had the car on the trailer and was just ready to watch the race. After that night all the drivers went out to a local pub for a few drinks and had someone ask why the car was on the trailer, the bloke next to him offered me his spare engine and about 4 other guys offered to help, they were all guys that had come over from my state but i didn't know overly well. The next morning the after opened at 6 and racing started at 8, we got there first thing and by the time we started turning spanners there were about 20 people helping out, most of which I had never met before. We had the engine changed in an hour, in the end I had to start from the back of the field and finished 12 out of 42 cars. That was probanly my best weekend racing ever

@@averybolling Yeah it's in their IG account. He started in the hospital around the first week of October. His BP was quite high when he posted an update by then but by the 2nd and 3rd week he became worse.
That's horrible, I really hope he recovers. I enjoy both of these Ben's. They're phenomenal at what they do.

Dude at TRE jiggled that for 3 seconds and all those gears fell into place, would have taken me 20 minutes of finagling. Mad props.
Legit amazed at how relaxed racing in the US is considering you can't race without long sleeves at any track or event I've been to hear in Aus.
I think its just gridlife....ive got no respect for it after seeing their drift event at pikes peak. No safety inspection, cars falling apart, people not wearing pretty much any safety gear....having a fucking party on a nighttime and letting people drive the next morning hungover. It's like a bunch of kids in a carpark on a Friday night. No respectable track in the world would put up with so much bullshit

I wouldn't be surprised if that particular sensitivity to non-OEM fluid is the origin of the general knowledge that the 6spd are weak

nah man, its that they're driving really hard. 400hp in an evo is very conservative and should be very good for street driving. Race cars will always break like this. if they use the same car but drive it on the street, it wont break as much

At about 17:05, Short Ben seemed to be pushing to 11 tenths, no holding back! Many congrats on the season class win and hope he is on the way to full recovery. Tall Ben's in situ transmission swap was a great example of just going for it, on the plus looks like the EVO has a great transmission for 2022.
Such a great car community to help get the Evo back on track.

I love TRE. I had him rebuild my evo's transmission with a 3.73 final drive. He said he'd never built one and then I ordered one right before another guy with a Texas mile car.
Got another TRE trans in my talon but nothing unusual in it
If there's one thing I've learned in 10 years of Evo ownership it's how much of a pain the transmissions are to install/remove.

What was the gearset that they put in the trans? Was it a modified stock set or the Albin upgraded gear set? Amazing job guys, i just pulled my trans and the fact that you guys pulled, fixed and reinstalled in that time absolutely blows my mind.
Edit. Also, I love the 6speed, it may be "fragile" by comparison to the 5 speed, but i wouldn't swap mine out for the world.

Ben I think you should keep the evo as a street car and get another car for track because it seems expensive and a pain in the arse to run with lots of hidden costs, vs getting something like a K swap miata or something like that that would shred or like an s2000 or a bmw that is more reliable with less issues

Being one of the lucky people who got to spectate you guys driving at midwest fest, and being from Kalamazoo, this video was awesome to watch!
It's awesome to hear that Ben is showing a positive reaction and is improving. I'm not sure if this will be seen, but a small recommendation for his family that's there with him at the hospital. Maybe try and keep some type of "ICU diary" or daily log as to what's going on with him that he can read when he wakes up so he can grasp how much time elapsed since being intubated. I got extremely sick several years ago and was placed into a medical coma for a month, and the experience of waking up from some very crazy dreams to find out an entire month had passed was a very jarring experience. Wishing you guys the best.

It is definitely a whole different experience compared to all the sim racing that I did before. I can't even imagine what it's gonna be like in a kswap car. Track footage always struggles to convey speed but I swear nearly every shot in this video of cars on the track looked like they were being driven at 11/10ths. (Personal favourites 23:19, 17:03 , 20:16)
16 years with my 6 speed and no issues. Thank you not only for the awesome video, but also for your honesty. It's way too easy to just immediately blame everything on the car. Respect.
