- Welcome guys its me back from the dead.
I'll be reviewing Poppy Playtime Chapter 3, and then discussing as to why it not only does Mascot Horror right, but how it manages to be the first Mascot Horror.
All art, voiceover, recording, and script are all made by me, with the only exception being the ones I have credited.

Hey guys, fun reminder to actually watch the video before you comment something dumb like “fnaf was the first.”
Wow it’s almost like the video will explain the title, ain’t that crazy.
19:10 Fun Fact: on the Poppy Playtime Fandom Wiki, this version of Catnap was originally dubbed Hypnagogic. For those that don't know, Hypnogogia is essentially the slow declining of consciousness before falling asleep. Some of the stuff that happens during Hypnogogia include hallucinations, lucid dreaming, and sleep paralysis. Honestly, given The Red Smoke's capabilities, I would probably stick with this term for this form of Catnap instead of just calling it a "Nightmare".
@@wholehogscrap not gonna lie that nickname goes hard, I might have to just use it.
That’s actually really clever tbh. Well done researching that❤😊
That is pretty smart, that might mean that the kids only saw catnap in a sleep paralysis caused by the gas. And it is a lot more realistic than “scary red gas causes nightmares”
@@DoomAboveAll I actually remembered it from when Chapter 3 first came out, so I decided to put this here now that It's useful
@ ohhhh nice
This man here saying that Poppy is the first mascot horror without any hint of fear is wild, what a legend.

Man came back RIPPED and swinging! Poppy Playtime at first felt like a cash grab Bendy clone, but chapter 3 basically went and redefined what Mascot Horror can be!
Chapter 3 for Sure change what mascot horrors was once, I Agree
Went 'You want horror, we'll give you horror.' and they gave it, and we know they could've done more since we know Catnap can contort and we never see that.
@@starbonnie552 Exactly i was wondering where that depiction was in his scenes within the game.
@HarmonelEllisS. I'd say likely a scrapped scene or sequence or something. Cause if they specified that I'd assume they had a plan for it.
Or I don't know maybe they just wanted to give off the feeling he could be watching you from anywhere
@@starbonnie552 Maybe in the final fight with the ceiling?
Idc how long it's been, DogDay's death was very well done and just sad, tho we only met him for like a minute he left such an impact and his death was dang sad, that final scream will forever ring in my ears cuz that scream was primal I tell you
also for some odd reason I liked CatNap's jumpscare cuz it makes perfect sense, his pale demon look form is only an illusion to the player so once that illusion fades, it's too late
15:00 “A rundown amusement park isn’t scary” that a load of bull and you know it. They can be just as scary and versatile as any good horror setting that’s old and decrepit. In fact, I’d argue they’re perfect for a mascot horror setting. A once cherished land of joy, now rotting and forgotten about, what’s not to love about them? Their massive size allows them to host a variety of thematic locations centered around different flavors of eeriness and horror, each hosting their own mysteries to uncover. Add in the possibility of mascot entities that once attracted guests by the droves, now left behind by both their fans and their creators to rot in the paradise that’s now their tomb, and you’ve got a premise for a horror story. Are they cliché? Absolutely, but so is a good old haunted house. It’s how the story utilizes the setting that determines how scary it can be.
@@theemeraldenderman3007 Now, I’m a firm believer that everyone has their own tastes so I’m not gonna dog on you too much.
However, while they are good for levels and video games, to me, they aren’t creepy.
But! That isn’t to say the my can’t be.
Haunted houses are good because they have unique aspects that allow those things to be scary. Haunted houses would be just as bad as amusement parks if they were literally just…a weird house.
An amusement park can be scary if you actually have something play into it. A old creepy mascot costume searching for you, that would be creepy. Add some more scary imagery, ok.
But Amusement parks, as I have seen just rely on the idea of being an amusement park and thus, doesn’t work for me.
@@BuriedSoil5675
Honestly, open Amusement Parks are terrifying.
there's a rather important factor that sets it above the other Mascot Horror games: blood and darkness.
what i mean by darkness, let's i'll take Home Sweet Home: empty cradles... lots of them.
the company has also used *babies* in their experiments, not just children. there's also that one tape that tells us the effect of Catnap's "Red Smoke" on a little girl.
another example? Miss Delight's notes. they say she was locked in the School, driven to unbearable starvation, and knew that her sisters singled her out to be eaten first. she then crafted her weapon (which she called "Barb", a Morningstar mace from a ruler, pencils, and a sort of rope), killed her sisters to survive, how she did it, and regretting it (if memory serves), and then went insane (as heard from her tape).
the game has also, as i eluded to at the start, had the bollocks to show blood... and Dogday, whose lower is missing, with a belt to hold his viscera in; followed by his death: the Smiling Critters crawling inside him - one of them through his left eye.
The Poppy Playtime Franchise is one of my favorite Game Franchises and I can say that this Mascot Horror Series gets Better with every new Chapter.
Same can’t be said for banban
@@noahthegreat9892banban is anti-poppy playtime. It gets worse each chapter
It really does because they gain more resources for it.
Poppy Playtime is my favorite indie horror game as of right now! I love how unique it is to other indie horror game every single Chapter deals with something new and I am so excited for chapter 4 next week! I’m happy the game is finally getting the praise it deserves. It still makes me upset people shit on the other 2 chapters but every single one is great I’ll say that.
Chapter 3's great, sure it's got rough spots but every game does even ones seen as perfect. Definitely a good standard to be at for these games (I mean I've seen people complain the PT segment isn't at the standard of PT itself despite that being a triple A IP and this being an indie so of course it wouldn't be. If this is the best we can do I say we're doing great.)
Also just want to say, I love the fact the scorpion looking nightmare illusion Catnap is foreshadowed via a VHS before you ever step foot into Playcare. Even tying it into the previous chapter's antagonist.
Although I do somewhat agree, I still think mascot horror should be classified as something different, but I think the content farms is what ruined mascot horror
I wanted to forget about those.
@AlexaVarcho agreed
@WatcherKin while I still agree with my take that mascot horror wasn’t a real subgenre, the content farms definitely hindered it
@BuriedSoil5675 thanks for being understanding of belief on the subject, and it seems like a lot of people are missing that. But everything else in your video is something I totally agree with. Keep up the great work 👍
What is your opinion on Sleep Well by CG5. It's a song authorized by mob entertainment for chapter 3@@BuriedSoil5675
I’m glad chapter 3 took risks and made its game much darker and sad like it always needed to be my one problem with mascot horror is how childish it really is
Personally one of my favorite things in PPT is the music, and I never see it talked about! The folks working on the scores are doing a fantastic job across all three chapters. "Deep Sleep," "Clocking Some Overtime," and "Don't Wake the Angels" from chapters 1 2 and 3 respectively all have this melancholic feel to them that really adds to the atmosphere. But the real hard hitter to me is "The Hour of Joy," which is of course the track that plays during the Hour of Joy tape. The tape itself doesn't actually have audio, it's silent and the game plays this low, droning, hopeless sounding track on top of it, that very well captures the horrible sinking feeling I'm sure the player character feels watching that tape. Easily my favorite track from the entire game, and it's going to be hard to beat.
I do personally enjoy chapters 1&2 but I can definitely say that mascot horror as a genre has been horrifically neutered by what I can only equate to sanitization. PPT3 really challenges that and it's looking like 4 is going to be moving forward with the much darker themes and visuals, and I'm really really hoping this is a turning point, and we'll see more games in this genre continue to push boundaries, because there is SO much potential here.
Hopefully they keep improving each chapter
Ch4 coming Jan 30th be ready!!
I like how you described Chapter 3 as it's own game.
It is just part of a series so it is it’s own game
13:42 This got me off guard. It was way too funny for whatever reason.
I don’t know why people blame Poppy‘s playtime for killing mascot horror. In my opinion I think it’s actually the most unique mascot horror cause they could’ve easily just done animatronics and have a day but instead they intricately made their own story. I mean sure it is still based off of a evil business owner yeah but the evil business owner trope is the only one that would really work for mascot or cause it’s not like some employee would have enough power to influence the entire business to make the toys into human or vice versa so it’s like the evil Owner trope is the only way mascot who can really go. It’s just up to you on what that evil business owner Will do and yeah, you could argue that they’re using dead children to fuel their business, which is Fnaf like but again the whole point of mask on horror is to appease to kids initially, but also have scary stuff behind the scenes so nine times out of 10 kids will be involved in the corruption of Your mascot horror
People also blame Garten of ban ban , but I feel like mascot who died way before then plus it’s not that bad of a game which I know is a hot take, but I generally enjoy the games and the storylines interesting enough mass that who died probably because of rainbow friends hello neighbor isn’t really mascot horror so I never really understand why people bring hello Neighbor into it
I also see the argument that itself killed mascot whore. It started mascot horror and it killed mascot horror. Even some of my friends say that it’s Fnaf‘s fault for setting the bars so high which I could see their point but also it’s not Scott’s fault for making a good game and honestly, I think my friends are just jealous because I spend more money on Fnaf and I do them lol
If anyone did it
Garten of banban killed mascot horror
Even if poppy playtime did
It revived the genre and got redeemed (mostly)
Poppy Playtime to Mascot Horror games is what Primal was to Adult Shows. Poppy Playtime showed that Mascot Horror games can have actual stories instead of being super cryptic just like how Primal showed that Adult shows don't need to be problematic
I will admit that Poppy Playtime is fun, but I will no doubt admit Mob Entertainment handled it poorly in the beginning.
From charging people money for a chapter that's only 30 minutes, to the NFT scam, and even the push to release merchandise when the game wasn't even a year old.
What makes me love chapter 3, is how the boss battle isn't a chase sequence, the buildup for the character, the mystery, and the scary nature of the trailers really made it stand out.
I would say, chapter 3 is my most favorite chapter, unless chapter 4 surpasses it, and I think it would.
Bro awesome video and all BUT W FOR USING THE WITHER STORM THEME FOR THE OUTRO LETS GOOOO
Turns out when you're not making brainrot content (Zamination) and focus on the actual horror experience, it can save the reputation of your horror game.
That's because most of Zamination no longer works at Mob Entertainment. That's why 1 and 2 felt aimed at kids. 3 (and 4) are mostly done by people who actually care about a horror game.
the shorts were made because they had no time to do actual animations so they needed to keep the TH-cam money going to fund the game, when the studio had enough employees, they ended the shorts
I love this game because of the lore, it’s interesting.
the Minecraft storymode soundtrack at the end really topped this already-amazing video off wonderfully 🎉
Nice video yeah this is what mascot horror should be, and the devs are saying chapter 4 will be even better so we will see
Honest I am so excited for the release of chapter 4. It is gonna be both exciting and terrifying to play. Big fan of the doctor.

Thanks for the heart it means a lot to me 👍
I dont know if I would necessarily agree with your definition of the term Mascot Horror. I definitely think it is way to bloated, but the pioneers of the genre, FNaF, Bendy and Hello Neighbor, were put into the same category first until someone invented the name for the category. It's not that these games aren't "Mascot Horror", it's that people liked that title and it stuck, when another would have been more fitting. Calling the neighbor a mascot was always a huge stretch. How was he a mascot? "Nostalgia Horror" would have fit more as a term I think.
I think we should actually rename the genre and y make subgenres because there is no clear definition and with what we call Mascot Horror now, since we have the FNaF movie and upcoming Bendy and Poppy movies, we can extend this to movies as well. It's just a badly named term with a flawed definition that already had contradictary exceptions from the beginning
Anyway, that is my opinion. Loved the video!
Tbh idk why but I feel Chapter 3 wasn’t as scary as we intended it to be. The only true scary parts for me were the school and the Playhouse. That’s it, hopefully chapter 4 makes up for that
The glaze is crazy
I think the reason Poppy Playtime works in comparison to other Mascot Horror games is because it actually has a story, when it came to FNAF and BATIM there was a cryptic story and in some cases the creators had no real idea what to do with the story, Scott never had a plan for Security Breach that's why the storyline for the game was a mess and the Bendy and the Ink Machine's ending was so confusing because they had no idea how the develop the story, Bendy and the Dark Revival was a step up from that.
Poppy Playtime has actual characters, recordings, and the monsters feel like people not just plot devices. CatNap especially feels like an actual character.
Fnaf and poppy playtime are the two best mascot horror games
Bro ur sooo underrated 😭😭😭
let see if chapter 4 will become fully sci fi horror
My Mindset be like that one Mr. Incredible me when it comes to this "sub genre"
HORROR IS HORROR
Each chapter is better then the last, each puzzle is more and more creative. Animation is better, graphics, and everything is better then the last, chapter four is gonna be even better. That's the thing with indie franchises. The graphics get BETTER within each release of film or game
3:41 i agree. however. i feel like they should tone it down a bit. the puzzles are good. but sometimes it really is too much. i hope in chapter 4 we have some cool puzzles. but maybe just a few less. and i do disagree abotu chapter 1 and 2. both are still good imo. not as good as 3 but the first ones intro and chase scene is just great. and chapter 2 has its moments
I wonder what do you say about Chapter 4 of Poppy Playtime?
There will be a chapter 4 in like daysss more!! pls do a video about it!! atleast a review and ur opinion based on ur pov about itt, im subscribing!!

and on top of everything, chapter 4 looks GREAT (coming out in 2 days RRAAHAHHH)
You know, five nights isn't really liked because of the mascot part of it's horror, though it is at least it's a part of it. I think it's popular because of its story telling that's just fantastic.
That's what the other horror mascots fail in. If they were just well written, then no one would be complaining about them. I think Poppy Playtime just proves that mascot horror isn't in decline like super hero fatigue. It's just too bad that the creators of MOB had drove that one kid into a mental ward, and MAYBE stole his game idea, but I'm not sure about that part
I doubt they copied the kid (i'm not defending the higher ups actions)
Poppy playtime takes place in a toy factory
The kid's game takes place in another Dimension from a past tv show
Not the same thing
Or if we talking designs i have no idea how people came up with mob entertainment copying him
I just don't see it
Chapter 4 on the 30th, it looks even scarier
I hope Ch.4 would be more better than Ch.3
They mentioned that it would be darker than chapter 4 so that’s something to look forward to
@@RetroviaI Nice to hear about that!
I honestly agree. Now, there are many good mascot horror games, but Poppy playtime Chapter 3 did it the best (imo) even for me, chapter 3 was my favorite from all 3. Yes, the other 2 were good, but chapter 3 was just so much better in my eyes. Also, I like how to lore is structured. Some may argue FNAF is the best macot horror, or first, but the lore in that one... oh boy. Yeah, i think most of us can agree you shouldn't have to read extra books to get a basic understanding of the lore. FNAF 1 was good, if they stopped there it would have been better. But in Poppy playtime, most of the lore is in the game itself, so you don't need to watch theories or read books to get a basic understanding. I will be quite honest, i didn't like the reason they started the bigger bodies incitive for. But that's a small flaw and Deep Sleep was amazing.

I’m sorry what’s with the title of the video, we all know that five nights at Freddy’s is the first mascot horror
Anakin: LIAR. Mob actually started all the way back in February 2014 before Five Nights at Freddy's release.
@@jordanturner6908 mfw someone complains about the title of the video but doesn’t watch the video.
I think FNAF and Bendy did well with the Mascot Horror concept.
And same goes for Poppy, my one issue would be the smiling critters funny enough.
Unlike the other two games and previous chapters of PP, the SC just seem to look unnerving for the sake of it, having black eyes with glowing irises and a large gapping grin.
I feel Freddy and Co look very accurate to how animatronic mascots tend to look (at least older ones)
And Bendy takes obvious inspiration of old school cartoons like Mickey, Felix or Oswald, and rather than twisting the mascot itself, they created abominations that vaguely resemble them.
The same goes for Huggy and Mommy, both look cute enough and you could see kids buying them without getting scared of them, but like I said earlier, the Smiling Critters just look creepy for the sake of it.
This is mainly talking about their base designs, rather than their monster forms.
Lol cat nap was so creepy that he was giving kids nightmare in lore.
And I think smilling critters in game is something that could be sold to in universal poppy playtime kids because of the show.
Kids who watched the smilling critters show wouldn't be creeped out because they already like that style of black eyes and smile. (And toys with eyes can be more creepier)
holy shit my man got BUFF. like damn Gryavel you built like a brick house.
I absolutely agree with you but I have to disagree with your opinion on chapters 1 and 2
Sure they aren’t perfect but they are still great with the effort mob put into them and the puzzles never feel out of place the monsters aren’t terrifying but they are nerve racking and mommy long legs was certainly trying to be scary especially when she had that monologue and went crazy
I think chapter 3 kinda sucked because there wasn't enough Catnap or the gas mask mechanic.
They could've had a few chase scenes where Catnap chases you into the gas and you have to wear the mask, obscuring your vision to add difficulty.
And maybe instead of immediately killing you, the gas could've taken some time to kill you so that you're able to take off the mask to observe your surroundings to ease the difficulty spike. And if there were multiple paths you could take to escape Catnap, that would've really added some strategy to the mask mechanic as you took it on and off to find the path you want while managing your time so you don't breath in too much gas or let Catnap catch you.
Lots of missed opportunities with this chapter.
Are you like uh yeah?

Hot take, I didn't care for chapter 3 at all. I understand that Catnap was supposed to be a stalking predator but they could have expanded on that way more than what they gave us...also I much prefer Chapter 2 because it felt more atmospheric and somewhat creepy especially with Mommy Long Legs! I just hope chapter 4 cleans out the bad taste chapter 3 gave me
I 100% agree that there should have been more from CatNap stalking you, but I really don’t understand how Chapter 2 had a creepier atmosphere than Chapter 3. I thought Chapter 2 was good but not great, because I hated the awful swing mechanic and the fact that Mommy Longlegs talked so much made her a lot less scary.
Honestly, I agree. I definitely think Catnap could have played a bigger role in the game while still keeping the "less is more" approach in the game we do have. A lot of people defend Catnap's lack of screen time and compare him to the Xenomorph from *Alien,* but that's not a very fair comparison, in my opinion. The Xenomorph in *Alien*-despite having limited screen time-actively participated in the story, hunting the crew of the *Nostromo* and picking them off one by one. It felt like a legitimate, active threat that could kill someone at any moment.
With Catnap, he feels much more passive and less like an actual predator. He doesn't actively participate in the story like the Xenomorph does and isn't really much of a threat until the final 20 minutes of the game. Most of the time, he doesn't even acknowledge us, usually just walking past us and minding his own business, while the Xenomorph actively acknowledges the characters, hunting them down. Catnap didn’t feel like a threat that could kill you at any moment.
Another big difference is that *Alien* is a movie, so its runtime is much more condensed, allowing the Xenomorph’s limited screen time to have maximum impact. It’s a tightly crafted narrative where every moment counts, and the pacing makes the Xenomorph’s appearances feel significant. With *Poppy Playtime* Chapter 3, we’re talking about a multi-hour game, which inherently has a much longer runtime to fill, and yet Catnap still doesn’t feel like an ever-present or actively threatening force. In a game, players need to feel constantly on edge or aware of the antagonist’s presence, especially when he’s built up as a stalking predator. Catnap should have been integrated more into the gameplay and story instead of just being a passive presence until the end.
Also, I agree-Chapter 2 is much better. The puzzles were more tightly paced, and Mommy Long Legs was a genuinely good villain. She had lots of personality and much more to do compared to Catnap.
@TheodoreGrambell-f8j THIS! THIS RIGHT HERE!!! I fully agree! If I felt like I did playing isolation then it would have been awesome! Doesn't have to be exactly the same, but at least feel like you were in constant danger of getting mauled!
@@TheodoreGrambell-f8j Mommy Longlegs had a very well developed personality which made her a very interesting character, but she was also a lot less scary than the other villains because she talked so much in my opinion. The less we know about something, the more likely we are to fear it, and that works pretty well with CatNap and Huggy when they rarely talk if at all.
@AlexaVarcho she’s a professional yapper
Sir get a job
Chapter 4 is better
Hot take: chapter 3 of Poppy playtime is the worst in the whole game
At least you have a job unlike this guy
It is not the first mascot horror, that goes to batim at best, and fnaf at worse
no Indigo Park is
That game is carried by Rambley, who doesn't even make the game scary.
I didn’t think Bendy and the Ink Machine and the first two Chapters of Poppy Playtime were too great, and don’t even get me started on how unspeakably awful Garten of Banban was. I personally thought that Bendy and the Dark Revival and Poppy Playtime: Deep Sleep were master pieces, and I think those two games are what made mascot horror a great genre.
Edit: I also never understood why FNAF got so big. I mean sure it was the first of the genre and was pretty scary, but I think the gameplay in most of the games is trash personally.
FNAF got big for the same reason Pokemon did. The monsters had likable Fantasy appeal. It's not too overdesigned but not underdesigned either like Digimon has. Plus the movie is more of a Mystery Crime/Thriller for FNAF 2023 then a horror. I'm surprised many people don't see this its all about the likable character design.
@@BurningFlamesofDivineDragonThat part makes sense. I get why the characters are popular and why people enjoy the scare factor. I just can’t get past why people think the games are so good with the awful gameplay and confusing lore. In the earlier games there is no movement, no puzzles, nothing but watching and waiting for an Animatronic to approach. Plus, the lore keeps getting messier with it constantly contradicting itself and such.
@ I mean if the FNAF movie timeline is anything to go by it will do what the Sonic Movies did. Be better than the games by cleaning up the lore and being a better timeline than the video game one.
@ I actually did like the movie, because it was able to stick to one coherent storyline and didn’t have the gameplay issues because it’s, well, a movie. It was just kinda a sad story of how good FNAF could have been for me at least.
Fnaf was the first
There was probably a another game before fnaf
Fnaf has seen everything
Hot Take: FNAF had potential with great scares and being the first of its kind, but ultimately I think it is worse than Poppy Playtime and Bendy for its unnecessarily confusing lore and awful gameplay. But, it is no where near as bad as Garten of Banban, because not much can accomplish that.
@AlexaVarcho I agree with you
@AlexaVarchoFinally someone that thinks the same way!
Fnaf is way to complicated!!! You have to watch 100 of videos, behind the scenes, some secret tape, a vintage merch just to understand the story...
For Poppy playtime, you just need to play Chapter 1-4 and play these small tapes on Project playtime, and then there's this Orientation Notebook. Also it ms way better written! The actual organs of the children are in that toy, not the soul just like in Fnaf. That makes it a lot more scarier!
Too bad it’s gonna be slop again 😭
