I've been a carpenter most of my life and I'm 60 now and have never put a roof on that way ,all u had to do was rip a cut in original roof at ur highest point and sister the new rafters to old ones for new roof plane
Or... or... he can do it the way he wants to do it...
I would think you want your rafter on the edge of the roof to come straight down like the rest of them and then your hip rafter intersects that rafter at the corner point of your roof. Would be so much easier and proper to do it that way I would think.
May I just say I love the new intro: It is so amazing to look back at all you have done and been through and the cool part is I have followed you since the beginning. It seems like just yesterday though, time just flies. I still remember building the chicken pens and the incubation in AZ. Love how far you have all come and watching the kids grow up. Thank you for allowing me to come on the journey along with you all.
I can tell this particular job is much harder than anything previous. Don’t be afraid to get help! Momma V got help why can’t y’all!
If Gary stops overthinking everything, then test building, tearing it down, retuning it, building it again then using 100 screws & Hurricane straps THAT’S when we need to start worrying!😂 He always does twice the work just so he can get it 100% perfect!
But Gary always overthinks his job and he does it right the first time lol 😂 😂
Absolutely !
Gary and Mel, can do it, “GARY & MEL’S WAY”!
It is their house/home! 🏠
Perfection is the builder who builds their own future! 🏚
Not your house… Not your problem….
Keep your 🙊 monkey, in your circus. 🤹🤡 🎪
Gary and Mel, 💁🏼🙋🏻♀️ are doing everything to keep their family safe as well as to make sure the house will stand for another 100+ years. For the children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren!
🙏🏼AMEN🙏🏼AMEN..
SEND THEM LOVE!!❤
If you cut the heel backwards, it will fit the other end of the porch, then stick it up and scribe the top cut in. This will be your template, but the heel cut will be reversed for the right side.
A better way to measure for these rafters is add a vertical board out where the heal is and run a string line up to the point on the band board. Then take all of your measurements from the string which represents the inner top edge of the 45 degree rafter. How high you place the string at the heal end is will be where3 normal rafters are installed, and a level extended out to to mark your string height.
Gary, From the angle the camera is watching you fave a bowed rim board where you are measuring from, maybe you should take a look before going further
I saw that too ,that front girder is crooked as hell
You be sure to but that zip tape on the top side of those 2 by 8 to help keep water from going under them
Gary, I would just like to say that when dealing with angles and lengths it is very difficult. Get an angle that works and if you change the length, that throws your next angle off. Good luck young man and I hope you get the hang of it.
You should have put those under existing roof instead of above.... it would have been easier.
I think the reason Gary went on top was because he wanted more heighth out front so when they looked ot the door and windows they could see the mountains. If they did it the way you suggest the roof would have to be lower for the pitch to allow rain water to run off. Therefore not allowing the view of the mountains they want.
Oh absolutely Nancy and makes for strength. The slope is determined by his front beam which is crooked and needs to be straightened. Hey Gary how bout a string line?
Looks like a real wave in them boards.
Be careful guys, don’t want you all to get hurt. That makes a nice walkway 🤗❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Mel the grazon was on the hay & fed to the animals then they used the manure to fertilize their garden & the plants all died. It can take yrs to fix the soil. You are both my Heroes ❤Auntie Laura🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s
Just measure two times at least, and however more to make sure so that you only neat to cut once and have it right. That 2 x lumber is like cutting GOLD! And i marvel that essentially every time you cut, after all the thinking and measuring, you cut right on the mark, and no wood wasted! Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's great to see how comfortable Mel is showing off the Mom Bod! Gary you are a lucky man..
Hard work but oh so worth it. Your a great team. Thanks for sharing. Take care❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🇺🇸✌️
I have a Question, where is all that Framily when you Guys need Help, because those Hip Rafters are always a pain even for professional builders 😮❤❤❤
Here when they need us but this is their journey and we respect that. Love 'em!
Gary you are your own man. And that works for you ❤
Good afternoon… just watching the progress on the project.. makes me wish I could be there to help… be safe
I would be in the same boat as Gary trying to figure those angles out!!! Something I would try is run a string line that represents the top of the board and then take shorter pieces of wood and the saw on the roof to figure the angles out.
Please buy an extension ladder, that step ladder is not safe! We don't want to see either of you get hurt 💕
If your roof is a 5/12 slope set your framing square at 5 and 17 that will give you your seat cut for a hip or valley
There it is !!!! Roger knows the math formula.... but I'm thinking it should be 17-1/2
Hey Gary maybe you should write it on your framing square it might help. Bevel on the hip rafter at the pitch of the roof.
So good to finally see some work being done on the roof hahah! I dont really understand why you are adding hips to the deck roof though, definately made things 100% more difficult going forward but it is certainly an interesting thing to watch :)
You will get it Gary, you always do.
You have already come a LONG way in solving the compound ANGLE puzzle, and tomorrow will be a lot simpler - just a little backwards from today!
Hello Gary and Mel, Gary several years ago I slipped a disc in my lower back, It wasnt bad enough for surgery, but my sciatic nerve oops I mean psychotic nerve pain worsen, going to the chiropractor helped, but didnt prevent, until I purchased a inverter table from amzon for less than a 100 bucks. This helped me greatly and I still do back exercise.
Thanks!
OH MY GOODNESS!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! VERY GENEROUS!!!! WOW!
@@SimpleLifeReclaimed oh.. good glad you received it❤️Auntie Laura
Gees you could almost surf on the wave in that timber
Just an observation. Have you thought about not cutting off the old roof and just adding Small hip wall under your rafter to close in that space. You two are amazing. ❤
I did that for a freind. A lot less work.
We removed an old porch from our son's fixer upper. Porch rafters were scissorsed to house rafters and roof was continuous. I think his ledger board is going to trap water or make water runoff slow? But I don't really understand what he is doing either.
3:43 Mel, you look a little worried about standing down wind here 😂. All I kept thinking was hey Gary, don’t toot on Mel. 😂
😊
The way the camera was set up you could see down the line of wallplate which looks like a donkey's hind leg so setting those rafters out and keeping their ends in line will be very interesting to see!
Good Afternoon Mel and Gary!! 😊✨️
I like seeing all the progress y'all are making!
The hip cut is the bevel of the existing roof alone with the pitch of the porch roof
Your speed square has two sets of angles on it. One for the hip and one for common common is you’re straight rafters in the middle. The hip is the outside that you’re working on
The jeans lol million dollar video
Regarding the birdmouths, the seat cut is supposed to match the beam width. It's going to make finishing the porch ceiling difficult.
What ever you build an decide i know it won't get put on the house till you are sure it is right. You got this.Mel, you an Gary make a great team.
I don't like hights at all, please be careful, i am scared for you.I'm on edge just watching you.
Trial an error, thats how you learn things. You will fix it ,i am sure. I can hear that rocken chair calling you Gary.you are an amazing person.maybe you will think more clearly tomorrow. Have a great rest of your night.❤😊👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Great to see you guys having fun while you work. Mel Uncle Paul is so proud of you and your funnies girl, lol. I can see your nuts and that thing scares me had me nearly crying lol. Stay safe you guys
You’ll need to do a plumb cut at the edge of the roof(sub fascia) and where the top board meet Gary x/17 and your last seat cut is at the corner of the house maybe start centering from centre of building as well 😎👍
All the side cuts will be plumb cuts at 45* with a common difference for the jacks
If your porch rafters are lining up directly over the cabin's trusses, those band boards aren't needed.
Awesome Job Gary and Mel
After hearing you say you wanted to raise turkeys and chickens together I checked Dr Google who indicates ducks, geese, turkeys, and guineas can all be housed with chickens as long as some coop modifications are done to accommodate the different species.❤️ Hope this helps.
🎶 I’m too sexy for this catwalk 😂
Awesome video God Bless you and your family Amen
Hi Gary, just watching the struggle with that first board on the roof and reflected on previous comments, a good clamp may have been useful holding those boards when you first put them up. It would save Mel’s back from overstretching as she didn’t have a ladder at first. I am looking forward to this being done, when I saw Gary working off the top of that ladder I was cringing as a rule of ladder safety is not to use the top rung, I like a few extra ( like 1metre) to help me safely grab the ladder before climbing down. Just stay safe because I really enjoy you and your family and would like to see lots more from you over time. Great job despite my worries, if I was a Neighbour I would be there helping you but you are way across the ocean. I also note the middle beam is bowed towards the house, that will be a challenge to straighten as you mount the rafters.
Just had breakfast and reflected on what I saw. When setting those angles, an easier way could be just using string lines from the roof to the beam. That way you’re not struggling with the weight often, just the least necessary. You could set a line for each side of the rafter it’s like someone drew the lines in the air for you. Try it out, I think small nails are all you need for that, when done just pull them out. Don’t cut off your roof at the edge, use the trusses to attach storm bracing to give your veranda rafters extra hold. If you are using hip valleys at the roof intersection you shouldn’t experience leaks, how you finish the tin under the valley may differ depending on your roof sheeting profile. In my house the roof was reasonably low and the valleys didn’t leak. I had a sheeting called trimmer which had 4” flat valleys. I made a tool to fold the valleys up to limit any wind blowback. Think about it. Take care.
Bless your heart Gary, you’re making it happen!
Y'all are amazing. I can't get over what you have accomplished so far.
You’re both doing great , you amaze me with all you know and do ! 💕😊💕
Hard working couple - should try to schedule builds in early spring and late fall beat the heat great job well built
Looks great. Gary I would not be able to figure any of the angles out. Great job you two ❤❤
OMG how Amazing you both are AMAZING ❤❤❤❤
You twoscare me to pieces!Iknow you would like an easier road, but i would tell your kids and their kids when the arrive at the age to understand, the limits you two pushed to provide and provide well, for your family.. An amzing thing to see, when I can stand to watch, but the risks on the back deck roof / overhang is truly scary [to me & I'm not there]! I can see future graduation parties out there where the main sory will be the risks taken! ON THE ROOF; NOT IN SCHOOL!🤤
Just wondering would it be a good idea to cut a rectangle out the roof and connect to the rafters I think it’ll be stronger 💪
God Bless from your Canadian Friend
Interesting build guys. I am looking forward to the end result. 👍👍❤️❤️🇨🇦
if it was me i would bring the rafters all way to edge of roof with the long cuts and then do a bevel cut on the 45* rafter and align with the facial will be a much more structural connection and cleaner line will also bring the porch roof blended with the house roof. if i knew how to send a drawing I would. then as extra look i would remove the overhang on the main roof at the porch and extend the wall framing up to porch rafter will make the porch feel much more open. just my options. Great Job you guys are doing learning as you go.
Be very careful putting up the rafters - the ladder seems sketchy 😟 Mel, you're a big help to Gary 😉
You will get figured out Gary your the best 😊
Gary n Mel
Have a great day
Mel lifting all the lumber to get pumped up to beat Mike at the arm wrestling contest.
Hello Gray and Mel and family. From South Carolina.
I've caught up to present time!! Watching this episode from vaca in Cancun. Taking a lil break from the heat, ocean and people 😅
You are having too much fun! Hope the angle problem gets solved soon. Keep on keepin' on guys!!! It is a slow process with the way it is going, but it will work out and be great I'm sure.
I could never do what Gary does at heights!
❤ Hopefully you will figure out how to math compound angles.
Good luck with this build.
I would not cut the roof.
Get some more ladders and make them taller?
Hey 👋 Gary and family love yall video. 😇😇❤️❤️👏 Happy Mother's day Mal 🌺🌺🌺🌷
If you put some of the rafters on both ends you can run some string lines across the top of them. It might help with the visualization and give you something to measure from. Lengths with different rise and falls, different angles. Think of triangles. Rise, faĺl, hypotenosses
Sheet metal lay-out for 4 yrs.and building things for my whole life. I'm serious if someone offers to cad it up for free, it would be a great help.
Can't spell hypotenuse
well what it is called is a compound angle cut
If i knew a few measurements i could draw it up in sketchup and give you the angles.
Gary this guy can help if he's good with cad
Is it a straight line or a curvy line is what I ask my daughter and she goes Huh Dad? LoL 😂😆
5:01 ahaha, was that a play on words 😂😂😂
you guys need a real 8'ladder. aluminum is a death trap.
Your edge rafter needs to be even with edge of the house. Then angle hips off of it beginning at bottom of roofline of house. Might want to think about that
Hi, are you going to have natural lighting to grow your plants, or grow lights?
it might be helpful to use a piece of styrofoam to use as a mold for the corner to see the angle would be then trace on your wood
And get a safety harness and use it
For sure Walter but giving good safety advice to two people who installed a sliding glass door while he balanced on the rafters. Dangerous as hell. So I gotta ask why he would use a safety harness. Maybe when someone finally gets seriously injured.
Wow, that looked very hard to do. But I know you got it Gary
??? Can you scribe the roof top like they do for tile and door jams ???
Yes, Gary the corners have driven you crazy from the ground up BUT, someday you’ll be able to put up a wrap around deck someday if you want to.
I have to say, I've been watching since the very beginning of your build and this is honestly the first time my butt kept puckering worried about someone getting hurt.
I had the same problem, I gasped way too many times. I was only comforted by knowing they uploaded the video and we're not going to see a major incident.
Gary just think about an oval clock and you have to make all different arms for it
😆😜🤣 Mel! You so funny!
Video tuyệt vơi 😊
Hey you guys .It looks awesome..all good Gary ..My ex husband who was a true blue Amish carpenter ( I’m not kidding he was not Amish But, the work was amazing..$ he was just like this.,Very OcD..meticulously woodworker and craftsman..So Mel ..I understand. We are still friends ..His next project is to build his shop with his apartment on top.,
It's all in the hips.
Those boards look like they weigh a ton to me but I’m too old for that kind of work I would fall just as sure as I’m sitting here watching Gary and all I can say is God Bless you Gary and please be careful and not fall
Gary your shirt is very fitting for this video.lol😅
Did you try using rafter tools . com? I love the way Gary's Mind Works
Do you ues reg drills orimpact drill
hips and valleys. so a common roof has a ratio of 12 to what ever. for example 5 to 12 which is your slope. now hip or valley is based on 17 example 5 to 17. If you drew a square 12 by12 and measured the diagonal it would come to 16.97 which is your hip or valley. so if your your main roof is a 5/12 slope, on your speed square set it up to at a 5/12 slope but read the hip or valley part of the speed square
I would really think twice about cutting off the ends of your roof rafters it could weaken the integrity of your roof , I'd get some input from a home builder ...just wondering .
Wearing a tool belt puts !lots of pressure on your back Gary. You need one that has suspenders. Wow crazy amount to figure out but you get it. ❤❤
Wonderful job!! And some excellent observations in the comments!!!❤
That peanut butter is high in protein and believe you are going to need that for your energy level Gary and please be careful up there on your rooftop
hi,
if it were me the i would do so i dont need to put it up and down all the time, i would put the templet on 2 board/planks on the ground that is laying on the right lenght then i would know how to cut it becasue then i could study it on the ground from all side and i would not need to bring it up and down just pick it up and move it a little if i need to move it a little.
basically do everything i need to do on the roof but whit the templet on the ground instead. hope you understand what i mean :)
hope it is a good tip i had and have a wonderful day :)
Try laying a board on the roof line for your angle. and for the outer side do the same thing with your Miter square you, Be surprised too what your tools can do for you.
Gary, 6-12 roof pitch what you are doing should be a 33-1/2 degree angle not a 4 degree angle. Is that what you ended up with.
I'm sure your gonna figure it out!
I would recommend not putting in the ledger boards for the porch rafters because it's going to cause your porch roof to be higher than the house roof and allow water to penetrate under it. Also if u try to seal it so that doesn't happen it's going to cause a valley where the water from rain and snow melt won't run off like it should and you will end up having to replace your roof sooner than expected due to water damage
Keep in mind we don't know how they are going to be attaching the metal roof yet, I'm sure it'll all come together soon and we'll understand how his mind works.
I agree with removing the ledger boards and cutting into the roof then attaching the walkway roof to the house purlins it will be easier to seal the two roofs to prevent any leaks or water sitting in a ridge unless you intend to fit batten boards on top of the Zipboard that are the same thickness as the ledger board this would remove the ridge. I reckon you’ve overthought this double roof twice over but the second time you started halfway through it so you have forgotten the first part.😂😂😂😂
