- I got a question about the properties of Saksa or Hammer Grip and Pakal or Ice Pick Grip.
Its important to understand their characteristics to figure out what grip works best for us.
However it is important to remember that there is no 1 right answer. What you choose is heavily dependant on context and the results of your training and pressure testing.

Hello, nice tat sleeves
In my experience, pakal (which I favor and train more than saksa) will almost certainly translate to empty hands, whether it be boxing, trapping, etc.
So my question is, what does saksa offer to empty hands?
Timing mostly in my opinion. Double Knife Saksa requires quite a bit of parrying or jamming of your opponents weapon and because you don't have the hook of pakal, everything is harder.
So your timing needs to be exact.
However maybe if you ask me this question again in 10 years I'll have a different answer.
As of now my opinion is pakal - empty hands as a transition is way easier than saksa to empty hands.
Why not hammer in the right and ice-pick in the left? It seems like that gives the best of both, with the pick acting more like an empty hand in its manipulation potential.
Yup that's definitely an option. Infact the version of this video I uploaded on Patreon has extra footage for our Patrons where I talk about these non symmetrical grips and some strategies to use them.
The main gist is that when we are using these non symmetrical grips, whichever hand is forward will dictate how you use both knives.
So you're right. One option is that one knife can be used almost like empty hands.
