- I just got these in the mail and figured why not make a video sharing how I checked their validity before putting them into my album. They aren't a very hard series to catalog, thankfully. This is a pretty casual video and we don't get into anything super technical, just some chit chat and perf checking.

Hi Kyle, the dot in a circle means cancelled; one star means mint, with original gum, and hinged; two stars means mint, never hinged. At least that’s what they use in Michel.
Lining up the holes to measure the perfs doesn’t work for me so well. I try to line up the lines with the perfs…each line should sit roughly in the middle of a perf. That usually works for me as I can see things better. Keep up the good work! Best regards from Stuttgart, Germany!
Interesting, I don't use Michel so that's likely why I've never seen them. I have seen some people use the lines but I haven't learned how to do that yet myself, perhaps I should. I appreciate your comment, thank you!
That was so cool when you checked the water marks. I didn't know stamps had that. In the 3rd grade I went to a couple stamp club meetings after school. But didn't pick up the hobby. I did purchase a lot of stamps a few months ago. It was more for investment purposes. I only stumbled upon your videos from looking to get a idea about the worth of my stamps. Just wish I could find someone local I could trust to sale mine too. Thank you for your videos. They are real informative.
Glad you enjoy my videos, thank you!!
The first time I used the Stanley Gibbons Great Britain catalogue I totally lost my way, even though I read the "how to" (briefly, though). It was largely due to the way the headings work as you showed. It was good to again see how it works. Thanks! I love the face of the imperial dragon. 🐉🐲🙂 The identifications went pretty well.
Yea that went smoothly and wasn't hard, thankfully. I'm glad you enjoyed! I quite like the dragon stamps too!
Your comment about how the information in the Scott catalogue trickles down cleared some things up for me. Especially dealing with the watermark. I didn’t know that. I just recently started using Scott catalogues to identify my stamps and have ran into some difficulties. Thanks for that info
I hear yea, it was super confusing for me at first. Only over lots of time have I started to really get it. The Scott catalog has a section at the beginning that explains how the listings work. I still haven't really sat down to read it fully myself, but I probably should.
@@KylesStampsYeah that’s a good idea. I think I’ll do that this week.
Chan catalog (more reliable than Scott for Chinese issues) indicates that the 1888 issue should be between 11 1/2 and 11 3/4 and the 1885 issue 12 1/2.
thanks alot for this information! Another great video brother 🙏🙏
👍 thanks!
Also the one with the hinge remnant has inverted watermark (printed on opposite side)
The circle with dot usually means used.
Fantastic, I've been trying to figure that out. Thank you!
If you use Michel, one of the first things you learn is the cancelled sign you asked for. It is quite common in Europe.
Regarding the stamps: My impression is, that the perforation for the first and second issue of China is not that exact. It could be that you have slight differences. 11.5 to 12,5 is quite a lot, if it differs to 12,5 there is a good possibility that it is 11,5/12. I would try to get rid of the rest of the hinge for the 3 Candarin stamp. There is always a possibility that it is thin under the hinge and it looks much better not to have it on the backside. Only my personal opinion, not a must do. These guys are not to often to find.
I see, I've never used a Michel catalog yet. Interesting about the hinge maybe hiding a thin, that is good advice, thanks!
I wish that I had put in the paid amounts. That is a good idea. Do they refund your money if they have "no opinion"?
I don't believe so, they still gave me an opinion, which happens to be "No opinion"....lol
