cnet.co/1Fu69eN Does the current generation's hottest Civic do enough to stop us from waiting for the 2016 Type R to drop? Brian Cooley hits the streets and checks the tech.
I was looking for a reasonably priced, reliable, fun daily driver... I bought a 2015 Si sedan brand new back in Feb of 2015 for $21,700 out the door. After test driving driving Focus St's, WRX's, and GTI's (all of which I could afford) I decided on the Si. Yes, it's a bit slower than the aforementioned cars, but there was just something that pulled me in about it. Everything just felt "right" and it's good at everything it does even though it doesn't excel in any particular area. Oh, and that Honda engine growl is addicting and not piped in like some other cars *cough* Focus ST *cough* I can take the kids to school and then hit the back roads on the way to work. After two years of ownership I've rotated the tires and changed the oil a few times. That's it. Not a single issue and I still grin ear to ear whenever I drive it. And for those bitching about the shifter, once it broke in completely around 15k miles it feels a whole lot better and now has that Honda "snick-snick" shift feel that was missing in the beginning. Yes, my Miata's shifter was better but this one is pretty darn nice and I've owned in my lifetime (I'm 43) 14 different manual transmission cars, everything from Acura to Saab so I feel I'm educated in this area. Let the haters hate. Own one and you will understand. Oh, and the red seats... LOVE IT.
nice man. good to hear. just bought a 2013 SI sedan for the same reason as you. price, reliable, fun daily driver. I fell in love with the FRS but chose the SI because everything just felt "right". I test drove a gorgeous burnt orange SI(which looked hideous in pictures but beautiful in person) but turned it down because I wanted to keep looking around. fell in love with the FRS. thought about getting an evo lol. then after 4 hours of searching and test driving and feeling a bit nauseous I drove my now black SI sedan and it just spoke to me. I fell in love and was scared that my love for the car would interfere with my negotiating "skills" lol. luckily the dealership was wonderful. sold her to me for a fair price and CERTIFIED it for me. I like the rims better on the 13 over the 14 so that's why I went there. never found a 15 but anyways I'm happy with my purchase and its just a smooth fun car to drive. I know a bunch of sport cars freaks/geaks and most owned SI's in the past and none had anything bad to say about them. wish I would of got those red seats btw. they look nice.
@@juststoic3809 they went down alot due to the new gen (10 gen) here they are 15k but with 70k miles go for the 2013 and can get em for 9-10k easily planning on getting a 2013-15 one soon
I haven't owned a Civic since 2003. It was a '95 coupe EX manual. Great car. I look forward to the 10th gen Si coming next year. Will most likely buy one if it has a 2.0L or less with at least 200 hp. Preferably no turbo...
I've got the 2015 si coupe,I wanted the 4 door for room but wasn't available. It's my third civic and by far the best one, decent highway power for passing, phenomenal heat(I live in Winnipeg), gas mileage isnt terrible but the car all around is awesome.

TassieLorenzo Yea I read up on alot of the rumors and speculations, but damn I'm trying to shop for a car by the end of the year. Hopefully it comes out by then, otherwise I might just go with the ext manual.
I like my 2008 SI better than the 2012+ 9th gens. If you don't care for new tech in your car I recommend anyone picking up a used 8th gen. Super cheap and hella reliable. Or strongly recommend waiting for 2016's!
Honda's and Acura's where not made for the interior styling or outer styling. But for that performance feel but your car is still economic in terms of gas. They are extremely cheap to modify and turn into an all out track car or you can even turn it into a fun and fast street car for your DD. Some owner's may put to many race cosmetics that do not fit the description of what's under the hood. But don't always think of a Honda as slow because of some riced out Honda you saw the other day, try the car out for yourself and put some work into it and sooner or later you will find yourself fond of these car's and will try to stop the hate; but there will always be haters right around the corner. But once you build your car right and show them yourselves that it's not slow but it is indeed one of the cheapest, most reliable, and easily moddable cars on the road that can be turned into really fast tracksters or dragsters they will be blown away. Spread the Honda love not hate
I'm a WRX fanboy but I think this car is pretty underrated, especially for the money. That said give me the Si interior in a new WRX that's also hatch and I'd be happy. No car seems to have it all just right in this segment...
Pedro Pedrosoy W126 S-Class and an A8 Quattro. The GC5 was incredibly lightweight and responsive in a way that modern cars aren't. AMG? R8? Like you've ever even touched either one
Pedro Pedrosoy The oldest A8 is the best A8, because it's hundreds of pounds lighter than the later models. But don't let facts get in your way. And I somehow doubt you've even smelled a 911 GTS
MrLalasd and as a result I would never use the touch buttons, but I do wish they had sprung for a nob, why is it that everyone in the auto industry seems to copy bad ideas when it comes to interior interface?
roguedogx Can confirm you will never use the screens volume rocker. I own the coupe version and the one thing I don't like about the car is the volume rocker, but I don't mind since I always use the buttons on the wheels.
dave dunn If you had lane watch also on the left mirror, you would be moving your head towards the right to the nav screen to check your left blindspot.
dave dunn If you need a camera to check your left blind spot when all you have to do is turn your little head, then you need to go back to driving school.
The gear box springs back in the middle so idk how you'd hit 2nd instead of 4th or 3rd instead of 5th. You wanna downshift to 4th? You just pull it straight toward you no side pressure at all. You want to downshift to 5th you just keep the pressure to the left and push away.
It's too bad that downshift refers to shifting into a lower gear and not simply shifting back towards you. I do agree with you on the spring though. My 2003 Si still pops back to between 3rd and 4th gear when in neutral. Also, in a North American Civic, "pushing" the shifter to the left and forward will result in 1st gear. The reviewer made the same "downshift" mistake in the video.
I am glad they fixed it, and I would certainly consider it. especially considering that its main competition, the GTI, gets expensive in a hurry and has undefinable traction control. it does get a little bit harder when compared to the Fiesta ST with its lower weight and similar power, but the independent rear and better appointed cabin might still push the Si into favor for me.
To everyone saying you'll only like the seats if you're 20, and you'll grow up someday, I find it laughable. Some people actually enjoy cars for more than just getting from A to B with little gas. Growing up doesn't mean forgetting how to have fun..
Thus was the best year SI ive bever heard this car was hated outside of Honda Owners which means this car was beloved and hated by outsiders. 😂❤ No VW could compare.
I think the styling is a bit dated but the new si and type-r is a real looker. For 24k you could get an Accord EX with more space and quite a bit more comfortable but you miss out on the MT trans and the fun of driving. I'm in a market for a new car under 25k and I'm torn.
The Si and the GTI compare really well actually. I own a 2015 GTI and my brother a 2014 Si very similar in both acceleration and suspension handling. It all falls under who's the better driver. He takes me on some runs, and I take him on some runs.
Honestly, a car like this would be perfect for somebody who’s just trying to look for an A to B car that’s fun and cheap to maintain.. and we’ll probably last you a long time. Long enough to pass on to your kids honestly
danwat1234 Unlikely. For one, the Civic doesn't have a front facing camera and recording video in certain areas is illegal, so automakers tend not to go that direction. The only car that has a built-in camera that records the road is the Corvette Stingray, but it's more designed for racing and not recording who chucks your car.
+WuWei Xu The Cadillac CT6 has a front, rear and I think side cameras too and it can record from the front and back, I think. money.cnn.com/2015/03/31/autos/cadillac-ct6/ . Maybe the car makers aren't concerned with recording on private property because it'd be the responsibility of the driver to shut off recording at that time (though not many would).
danwat1234 That's different. Those cameras are used to give the driver an idea of his/her near surroundings when reversing or nudging forward. The Ford Explorer and many other vehicles come with the same technology. However, they cannot record video.
I've driven this car, I didn't have a problem with the gears. My mx5 has such terrible gearing I guess I just didn't care. And its very hard to find one with the nav option anyway. Also, I found one of these for sale with leather, not sure how.
Kellan Larson these are 2 cars at different dealers near me that show that the si does come with leather, www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/631365181/overview/ , www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/622977591/overview/
Might be because anyone who owns a Civic Si often is relegated to someone who still thinks they're in their teens & often punks in their 'tuned' cars would always try to agitate you to a stoplight race. I still pick a Focus ST or VW GTI over this.
only guy ive ever heard of that had a problem with the shifter gate on this car. The car shifts smoothly into all gears and the gears are all spaced perfectly. Its touted by most as one of the shifters on any vehicle from the factory. wierd.
***** Your anecdotal experience would go against almost all the reviews of the two cars. And I can almost guarantee that the Focus ST would be faster not only in a straight, but on a road coarse as well.
***** My point is that the Focus ST has...what...52 more horsepower and 70 more ft/lbs. Those kind of numbers make a real difference in a car you live with daily. More importantly, a few hop-ups put the Focus well past 300hp. Granted, it's all a matter of taste, but I think people who buy the Si are Honda fanboys, rather than just fast car fanboys.
***** Dude, I actually couldn't agree more. Power isn't everything, and you have to take it into the context of the overall package. I'd rather have a Miata than either the Si or ST. Good drives have something to do with nimbleness and effortlessness. I mean...I drive a goddam 1996 Buick Roadmaster station wagon and it's a lot of things, but it's definitely effortless. All I'm saying I guess is that in the mid 20s for bread, you get to pick Focus ST, VW GTI, Sub WRX, Scion FT86/BRZ, Miata, and maybe some others I'm forgetting. But for basically the same dough, you could pick a stripped Camaro or Ecopoop Mustang. You could also have a 305 horse Challenger if you like. For me, the Civic Si gives me the smallest boner of that list. It's not that it's "plain" by comparison, but it just seems like it isn't really trying. Thoughts?
I am 25 and have an 8thgen si I love it but ya it does feel to me like a teenage car now but oh well it's paid off and am laughing my way to the bank account! If I sell it I would buy a 04-06 fx35 SUV
The head unit for audio and navigation systems is more older Mitsubishi than Honda, which is worse, because there's no volume and tune knobs. At least Subaru's head unit is a lot better than this one. Even the CR-V, Fit, and the upcoming Pilot has this, which I don't like. The Odyssey and Accord head units are better with volume and tune knobs, and most of Acuras head units are similar to these head units.
I wish Honda would drop the boi ricer shit on the Si and let it grow up a little. And fit a turbo instead of their usual "Just rev the shit out of it" answer to things....
It's all good brotha, we all have our own opinions. You should drive a new Si! Trust me they're a lot better than what people make them out to me. I for one despised Hondas. I own a Supercharged LS1 GTO, and always was that steriotypical Muscle car guy that hated Hondas becausw they were "Ricers" "Lawnmowers," and slow. Lol, but I decided to give the Si a chance, and guess what? I fell in absolute love with it! Enough to buy it actually. ;) Haha well thats enough of my life story. Have a nice night.
FantomLightning i emailed honda to make a supercharged version and they said they would think about it XD the turbo was a no though honda has a pride on their engines that they should produce their own hp... but i love the sound of a turbo plus if they gave it a turbo dropped the cc to 2.0l and made it rev to 11k people would love their cars their old cars were like that and they dropped it in 1990 (when i was born lol).
Accord is much heavier car, not as nimble, and has a huge turning radius for its class. Longer drives you want the Accord for sure. Inner city driving with a lot of narrow lanes, twisting parking ramps and narrow stalls, the Civic becomes more delightful to enjoy on a day to day basis.
I so want to like this car, but the low level of interior quality materials is horrifying! The only thing that felt good was the metal shift knob. Cant believe how low Honda has sunk to save a buck.

I think the styling is a bit dated but the new si and type-r is a real looker. For 24k you could get an Accord EX with more space and quite a bit more comfortable but you miss out on the MT trans and the fun of driving. I'm in a market for a new car under 25k and I'm torn.
WTF, the oil cap says 0w20, why would you put something that thin in a car, that would shear down way too quick. Is it -60 outside?
What is the soundtrack in the back round?
Still a classic!
wouldn't the Si sedan be more comparable to the GLI rather than GTI?
Everyone forgets that the Jetta GLi even exists
GLI is just the sedan version, not to mention it's 3k cheaper. Idk why everyone disregards it.
Dea Garic because fanboys don't like sedans...
The Si and the GTI compare really well actually. I own a 2015 GTI and my brother a 2014 Si very similar in both acceleration and suspension handling. It all falls under who's the better driver. He takes me on some runs, and I take him on some runs.
Kellan Larson You do realize a Si is also a sedan right? Coupe as well.
can't believe they shoe horned a massive 2.4 into that chassis! Reviewer is really good though.
+MelbStevo The 2.4 engine is only about half-an-inch taller than the 2.0. :)
Honestly, a car like this would be perfect for somebody who’s just trying to look for an A to B car that’s fun and cheap to maintain.. and we’ll probably last you a long time. Long enough to pass on to your kids honestly
I hope they bring in a strong hybrid Civic and able to record video from the safety cameras so I don't have to install a dash cam for 2016.
danwat1234 Unlikely.
Perfect music for a Honda review.
I've driven this car, I didn't have a problem with the gears. My mx5 has such terrible gearing I guess I just didn't care. And its very hard to find one with the nav option anyway. Also, I found one of these for sale with leather, not sure how.
Jared Rosenholtz the civic Si doesn't come with Leather...
Kellan Larson these are 2 cars at different dealers near me that show that the si does come with leather, www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/631365181/overview/ , www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/622977591/overview/
Jared Rosenholtz Im pretty sure the Si doesn't come with Leather in the North American market
Kellan Larson did you look at the links I posted? I found 2 for sale with leather.
Then Honda has some explaining to do... I ordered my Si and I wanted leather, those hoebags said it doesn't come with leather
Cooley, Could you add in the car's crash test scores too among other things.
Might be because anyone who owns a Civic Si often is relegated to someone who still thinks they're in their teens & often punks in their 'tuned' cars would always try to agitate you to a stoplight race.
I still pick a Focus ST or VW GTI over this.
I don't see why anyone would pick this over the gti or focus st. All you need is a tuner for either one to make it an extremely fun daily.
Serenity in silence
The Focus ST and VW GTI can also be tuned with a strong aftermarket support.
P.S. You just made my case in point.
Yeah id rather a MK7 over this.
TVinmyEye Screw that crap. An Si will last forever, a gti won't.
+Trades46 Check out Engineering Explained's video on the VW GTI he finds it boring and disappointing.
Love the Si!
VTEC kicking in yo!!
Really nice review!
The radio should have just stuck w/ knob for volume control.
You guys might tell me to get outta here but I have to ask does this SI have an Econ button? Anyone?
Because its an economy car.( made for good has mileage)
Fly High No they replaced it with the traction control button. There's no Econ mode for the SI.
Lord Staind I approve that choice.
***** I have no discipline so I would be luck to stay in the 20's
***** I'm fine with 20's though, so long as I get to redline that engine as often as possible.
I’ve never seen a more passive aggressive video in my life
CNET, Bryan Ford Escape 2015 review please
only guy ive ever heard of that had a problem with the shifter gate on this car. The car shifts smoothly into all gears and the gears are all spaced perfectly. Its touted by most as one of the shifters on any vehicle from the factory. wierd.
😂😂😂 “si, that’s how ill take it”
For the exact same price you could have a Ford Focus ST1, which doesn't have the silly seats or nav, but is a Focus ST all the same. No brainer.
Thoughts?
You have me there; last Si I drove was a 2011 or 12 or something like that.
***** pay the same price and after a few years the honda will be worth much more and will be way more reliable
If you can't feel the VTEC, there is a light to let you know that it's on
I own a 2015 Si. You can feel it BTW.
1:26 what he says.... haha yes I agree, I love it
V-TEC JUST KICKED IN YO!
i'll wait for the next gen. I want that 1.5 liter turbo charged
I love the SI, but I would rather have a focus ST for the 252hp ecoboost and because it's a 5 door hatch
Si is more reliable
Can anyone deal with me to ship out this front n back bodyparts of fb6 si to me in malaysia...
Great review, imo.
FantomLightning next gen, turbo built engine
FantomLightning i emailed honda to make a supercharged version and they said they would think about it XD the turbo was a no though honda has a pride on their engines that they should produce their own hp... but i love the sound of a turbo plus if they gave it a turbo dropped the cc to 2.0l and made it rev to 11k people would love their cars their old cars were like that and they dropped it in 1990 (when i was born lol).
kiddeath921 Speaking of revving to 11k... I really wish they didn't do away with the s2000. That was a NICE car...
J Lui ikr my cousin has one and he loved it till he had kids and had to sell it for a....van :(
I don't know if I would buy this or an Accord coupe V6 . Maybe I would just skip Honda altogether and get a Golf GTI or Ford Focus ST.
+echarlie 89 Test drive them and pick the one you like the most! :)
You would definitely be giving up reliability with VW and Ford
i have both get the civic if u prefer better gas mileage but the v6 still does pretty good highway like 32+
Can someone explain me how 2016 Civic can beat above Civic SI on the test ?
I own a 16' civic Ex-T and the 15' SI is definitely faster.
Gohan sorry which is faster you mean 1.5 cc new Civic Turbo or 1.6 cc SI ?
The Si is faster bud.
Attila Khan I was between a 2017 ext manual shift and 2015 Si. I went with the Si. both are awesome.
i laughed when he said gti competitor
Brain Cooley's sleeves though
I so want to like this car, but the low level of interior quality materials is horrifying! The only thing that felt good was the metal shift knob. Cant believe how low Honda has sunk to save a buck.
wait did he say we are getting the civic type r ?
gonna love it will buy one
Buy. What. You. Like.
It's your car, so if you like it, buy it. This is so subjective and everyone has such a concrete opinion. Crazy.
It's 2015 and cars are still using halogen... So unsafe at night
Omg beautiful red body. I like the seats too. I'm 34. Lol
