    A few thoughts for anyone thinking of getting one of these chippers. 1) They are awesome and you won't regret it. 2) Be very careful around these things. By nature they are destructive and they don't care if it's wood or flesh they cut. 3) PPE is a must. The chippers are loud and the chipping causes the limbs to whip around and vibrate violently. Ear and eye protection and gloves are a must. 4) PTO hours matters. I have ~40 hp and can put 4x4 post through and the tractor never notices. 5) Blade sharpness and anvil gap matter. Keep blades razor sharp and the anvil gap as small as possible. 6) keep a set of lopping shears or a limb saw handy. Often small branches have twists or forks that are to big to clear the throat of the chipper. Pull these out and cut them rather than trying to push them into the disc.
    Hope this helps. Cheers.

      Thanks very much for the great advice Jeremy! These are really helpful tips and I appreciate you sharing some good information on it. Especially the safety advice. I found a few times I almost wanted to push my hand into the opening to push the smaller branches down and stopped myself - you just naturally want to push them further down into the chute. Thanks again and enjoy the weekend!

      Jeremy, your comment is right to the point. That is exactly what you need to know to operate such machine. Manufacturers of such machine should do a copy and paste of your comment instead of their 20 pages safety introduction... I would add one advice: PPE are very important indeed. But very good leather gloves are not welcomed there. If ever a limb get a grip on your gloves, you better wish they were cheap ones. I personnaly use the knitted nylon and nitrile palm gloves. They stretch and they tear, as opposed to leather...

    That thing works well. Got to watch the hands, NEVER let them pass the opening. The limbs can hook your gloves shirt or coat sleeves and you're in trouble fast. Too many horror stories floating around about the destruction they can cause so no thinking about anything but what you are doing while running that equipment. It is to easy to be safe and EASIER to be careless. Thanks for sharing GP be safe.

      Good morning ODD. I wish you had started watching the channel a year ago. Always have helpful advice - thanks! A few others had pointed it out as well. So now I wear loose gloves in the event I get pulled. I notice it happens once in a while (whether your hand is inside the shell or not). It just happens. I now almost always put one branch in at a time, or two if reasonably manageable. I find I feel safer and can manage the limb much better in the event it spins or pulls etc. I also took the time to check and the distance to the blades and it is much further than the length of my arm from my chest so I have a better idea of the machine now. But yes, it chips really well. I am totally happy with the purchase. Cheers and thanks again. Talk again soon!

    That chipper is a Beast. They picked the perfect man to test products, I know you will be fair and sell a lot of equipment for them. I predict your channel will grow leaps and bounds. Keep up the good work and be safe and thanks for sharing.

    Nice video. That is just like my chipper. If you throw a big enough branch in, it will self feed enough to kill the engine. I had a company contact me about reviewing a product. I told them I would be glad to to an unbiased review. I never heard anything back.

      Hery good day Roger. Thanks for the head's up I will keep mindful of that for sure. Good for you on your answer on the product review. I don't think it is helpful if it is not honest and open - good or bad. Have a good one and all the best!

    That chipper is "the bomb"! I've watched countless videos of the very popular BX42S chipper and after seeing them I realized that it wasn't for me because of the time and effort needed to constantly be shoving branches into the chute. The BECO in your video is a true "self feeding" chipper, meaning that it does PULL the branches in, so that you don't have to babysit each branch to make sure it gets chipped. The only other non-hydraulic/mechanical feed chipper I've seen that PULLS the branches in (besides the BECO) is the larger BX62S, which IMO is the fastest chipper of its kind on the market. The only catch with that one is that the chips can be large and many small twigs will pass through untouched. Since we want to make chips for our garden paths and for aesthetic purposes around the house, the BX62S wouldn't be a good choice. I'm a bit puzzled though because I can't find a 4" BECO chipper on the Farmer Equipment Sales website, only the 5" and "the beast" 6" models. Was the 4" model discontinued?

I had no plans to buy any more implements this year but I was pretty happy with this thing last night so pending the outcome of the next tests I do on it, I am thinking I may have to sneak it into the budget somehow. I am impressed with that BECO chipper!
    I have a DR 11.5 chipper that I tow behind my Polaris Ranger. It can handle up to a 3-3/4” branch and it has worked great for me so far. I wish it had the rotating discharge chute like the BECO and I also like the ease of access to the blade compartment too.
    I am at the point around our house of just trimming and maintaining our trees. We have gas fireplaces, so I don’t burn any wood. I end up giving away anything larger than 3-3/4” and I chip up the rest…

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good morning Mick. Thanks for watching and for sharing. Sounds just like me except I have along way to go to get to just maintaining. LOL. But hoping to get to that point. I don't need the firewood either so I always give it to my neighbour who is on a wood boiler. But really happy with this little unit - it is sized well for the B2601 and now I can start fixing up the paths and areas around the house. Thanks again - Have a great weekend!

    Nice. Way better than burning, especially around here where you can only get a burn permit in early spring.

      @GPOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good morning FIDO! Yes, same issue here. You can only burn at certain times and certain periods during the year so will be great to chip the piles up and also be great to use the chips around the property. Thanks for watching and for the comment! Have a good weekend!

  • @paullambert2668
    @paullambert2668 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have a Wallenstein knockoff from China that is quite similar - it looks like they're both based on that same Wallenstein design (BX25). It's excellent as I am only semi-rural, so can't burn easily. Anything that I don't cut for firewood will go through the chipper and then into a compost pile. In a year it's garden mix.
    I've had some experiences with the chipper though, and now have a healthy respect. I tried to clear the output chute without stopping it. My advice - don't. The blades are closer than you think - grabbed the tip of a finger and broke it (and a big gash). And in general the branches can whip back and smash your hand - better to never have hands inside the chute. I always try to keep a reasonably straight stick as a pusher so I don't need my hands in there.
    The output chute tends to block with greener and lighter material - we have a lot of fern at our place. I feel like it's a design flaw - the output chute tapers a bit. That's probably to get air velocity to push things through, but it also means that it can get leafy stuff wedged in there. Key is to keep an eye on the output, and when stuff stops coming out to stop it, open up and clear it before it gets packed too tight. It also needs regular lubing - if those bearings chew out you'll have to buy a new one.

      Good morning Paul. Sorry to hear about your finger and the accident but thanks for sharing it with all of us. I gave a thumbs up so your comment would go to the top of the comments for folks to see. Some important safety tips you have given us. I too, have been careless a few times as it is natural to just immediately bend down and reach in. Joe Lesage suggested to wear loose fitting gloves in regards to the branches whipping around or getting caught around your hand so I wear loose gloves now. I know O&D has a knock-off, I think as you describe, and his gets stopped up as well but so far mine has not even with lots of green softwoods, leaves and balsam materials but I will keep eye on it for sure. Thanks again. Some good tips here and glad you didn't lose the finger. Cheers and all the best!

    I’ve been pondering a chipper for quite a while now. Seems justifiable, at least more justifiable than dumping all the wood into a pile across the road that we’ll never even burn.. but I still have no idea what I’d use the chips for... lol, but that chipper is so cool and it seems to work so well, might have to give one a shot. Make sure to keep your hands out of the intake hole, lol. Can’t wait to see some more work with it, it’s very satisfying. Take care.

      Good day Jackson! Good safety advice - I have to admit, there were a few times I wanted to push the branch in deeper and had to stop myself from putting my hands in further. All fingers are accounted for. LOL. It worked really well. Can't wait to test it again on the other pile. I know these guys ship across Canada. Thanks for watching and have a good one!

    That chipper is nice unit that works good and has a good feed. The downside is you spend a lot of time (and work) feeding it. I prefer to put my brush in a pile and burn it on a cool november or december day. The upside is you get some chips and a tidy lot. Great videos!

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks CP! You bet - certainly easier to grapple them up and burn them but I like the upside - I have a lot of areas/paths that will look a lot nicer with chips on them. Thanks for watching and for the comments. Have a great weekend and all the best!

      @GPOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good morning Chief. I was thinking it might be a good idea to have one. We have pretty strict burn restrictions here too and in some cases you have to get a permit etc. So I end up with big piles of debris for months. Have a great weekend!

  • @raincoast9010

    I was surprised at how well it fed in the branches and it needed very little extra pushing to draw in the smaller material. I wonder about the value of hydraulic in feed if you are only chipping small stuff as most larger branches still make good fire wood. Now you have mulch for your garden, ha ha.
    Thanks for the video.

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was pretty surprised myself. Anything bigger than 4 inches we burn, so the 4" sizing was an ideal fit for me. Although only the first test, I am pretty impressed especially given it was a hard wood we tested it with. Thanks and have a great weekend!

    My but these things are handy. Have an older model bearcat myself. My experience has been the bigger the size of the limb and the harder the wood the better they work. Try running a bunch of green maple limbs less than your little finger and see what it does. Maple is soft and bendy and tends to slide by the knives instead of cutting. This causes a big jam in the exhaust chute. Great video. Cheers.

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good day Jeremy. Thanks for watching and for the tip. First time using it but you are right about the big limbs. It did seem to really chip them well and pull them through all the way. The smaller branches tended to chip a bit but then would stop ( I guess not much weight to make them drop into the cutting blade) until I put a bigger limb into it. Thanks and all the best!

      @GPOutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Morning P! Yes, It was quite a surprise. I wasn't sure it would chip those bigger branches but it did a great job. Funny thing, the tractor did stop when I got off the seat. But then found out that the safety switch below the seat has two positions. In order to use the PTO off the tractor, you have to start the tractor, put it in neutral, apply the parking brake, get off and lift the seat up onto the steering wheel, and then engage the PTO. Thanks for watching and have a good one!

    Kevin and Dave are very smart guys. I think this is not the last review you will do! At 13:10, this is the kind of bowed branches that I hate. Now that I see them while I cut the trees, I cut them right from the beggining while I have the chain saw. Thanks for sharing!

      Morning Mech. No it does not have one. The direct drive units didn't have one. I will check the discussion thing today. Cheers!

    Is 4” big enough if you burn
    Or would 6” be better

    • @GPOutdoors
      @GPOutdoors  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey good morning. To be honest, I don't have a lot of experience with different sizes. Here, we burn anything over about 3 1/2 or 4" so I don't need anything bigger than this unit. This unit practically will chip about 3 1/4". On my tractor it is not able to reach the full 4" capacity. I am sure a bigger capacity ( ie 6") is not a bad thing if it is in the budget. Wish I could give you better info but hope that helps a little. Have a good week!
