    I love this pedal. An essential for me in my duo (drums and guitar). I have a two amp rig and this pedal is always on through the bass amp. I can fool around with country picking, blues, rock and metal with this pedal. The only limitations are that my fingers can't always create the sounds I want since playing a bass and guitar part yourself can often limit you. But my fingerpicking is always evolving and I'm playing smoother and smoother bass lines with this as I continue. I never switch this thing out of the lowest note polyphonic mode.

    Bought this pedal a few weeks ago for the auto-tracking the lowest note in the chord. The tracking on it simply isn’t usable. On any guitar I used, it lagged behind, and seemed to jump around to the point that I wouldn’t trust that function in any gig capacity. The technology in this feature isn’t reliable enough at this point to be anything but a fun thing to tinker with, from my experience playing a les Paul, Strat, tele, acoustic and classical through it.
    BUT: i switched it to the regular poly mode, and set it to only track the bottom 15 notes, and it really shines there. Definitely keeping it, and have already used it live. Really fills out the low end and makes up for the lack of a bassist in a solo act.
    The automatic low-note tracking definitely needs some work on being reliable.
    Until then, I’m happy with the OC5 in the way I’m using it. In the way I’m using it (setting the range you want to octave down) I’d give it a 10/10. For the low note tracking feature, I’d give it a 4/10.

    Sir, I have a Electroharmonix Bass-9 and it has a setting called split where the lower range notes are played as bass notes. The problem with that is that it's polyphonic. Is the tracking of the low note monophonic meaning it only plays the lowest note in your chord, or does that do what my pedal does? I am in a trio, and it's frustrating because I play bass, but I have guitar playing ability (some finger picking skills so it's nice to have what I've got) but I can't play strumming patterns because you will have the two lower notes of the chord playing which is too muddy. If it tracked only the lowest note then I would really be interested in this effect.

    • @GreenhamGuitar
      @GreenhamGuitar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is also my question... I couldn't play roots with a third without the OC3 freaking out. This OC5 does seem better than the OC3 and the Bass9 in terms of actually isolating the lowest note from all the played notes in the selected range. If you listen with headphones, he plays a root and a 5th and it doesn't get confused, I think? Otherwise, check out OPFXS Dig Deep - A flawlessly designed subharmonic-only pedal.

    So in a nutshell, what is the difference between an octave pedal and harmonizer pedal? Don’t they basically do the same thing? Thanks, Garry

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, funnyharleyman! Thanks for your message, good question. An octave is less complex to create because of it being Chromatic. Octave devices go up or down (+/- one or two) and in the case of a POG, have multiple octave notes generated. A harmony unit produces octaves in addition to 5ths, 3rds, etc. To keep in tune in a particular key, that is a Diatonic interval. So similar, not the same.

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, antoniocaruso5169! Thanks for your message, hope you’re well. There is a crossover of sorts in the pedal. Function is only available in “poly” mode. Since the pedal is designed with guitar and bass in mind, it’s usable with either, however ultimately the lowest available note is no different that in a conventional octave or -2 oct mode. Your mileage will vary with regard to how successful it is for you sonically.

    I wish BOSS would make the current setting angle indicator on the dials clearer, why is it a tiny white mark? Look at say an 80s DD2 or DS2 other pedals from then, it's very very clear what setting the dials are at even in the semi dark as the are clear with great contrast. Modern pedals (like this one) I have to get a bl00dy torch to see what the settings are on.
    Maybe there needs to be a cottage industry in better readable dials.

    And why would I want one over the other?
    Thanks

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Store At. The pedals are pretty different. The main differences are that the Behringer only does an octave down from the original signal and is intended for monophonic playing. The OC-5 gives you an octave down, plus one and two octaves up. It can also work for polyphonic or monophonic playing. Either one could be great depending on what you're trying to accomplish.

      Hi, Phillip! Hope you're well and safe.
      That's a fun tone to play! The OC-5 doesn't have a dry kill, you have to manually set the direct vs OCT level via the knobs on the pedal. There may be an after market modder who can install a kill switch for you. Unfortunately we cannot offer or recommend this service as it voids your warranty.

Laid back intelligent and a serious player i wish he would collaborate with somone big and put out a recent album of originals with and edge to them = Don Carr pushing himself and his playing to the max would be an album worth buying. Not used up yet like so many of the more recognizable names that seem to be just going through the motions where Don Carr would be coming into his own and putting himself more directly on the map than he already is with both the song creation and his playing.

    I tune low...Will this pedal track as well in C standard tuning as it does 440 standard ?

      Hi, Den! Thanks for your message, hope you're well and safe.
      I don't have any personal experience with that tuning, however since this pedal is used by bassists as well as guitarists, likely good results to follow. Rabea Massasd did a demo on TH-cam and I'm certain he's in a drop tuning.

    i wonder.. If one were to run a splitter pedal one into this pedal, into a bass amp, then the other signal into a guitar amp.. youd be able to make a two piece band sound pretty cool

    Is there any way I can get my D string to sound out the octave. The A and E strings work great, but the D string is weak.
    I’m trying to keep the bass on the EAD strings and still Fingerpickin melody on the GBE Strings.

      Hi, jwllong! Thanks for your question. In “Poly” mode, the OC5 “Range” control alters where the octave effect crosses over from a frequency perspective. There has to be some experimentation to find the best balance for you with regard to the strings and fret positions you want to cover.

      @@sweetwater I’ve tried the poly mode but it doesn’t seem to work to well with fingerpicking . . . the latency kinda garbles it up. I do however love the sound of the regular mix on the low A and E string works great. I just can’t seem to get much octave effect on the D string without ramping it up and the all the strings come in distorted.
      Thanks for your reply and any suggestions I would appreciate.

    I normally love your demos, Mitch, but this one uses a second pedal in demoing a different pedal. It is a bit unnecessary , distracting, and actually makes me like the OC-5 less. If it’s so dependent upon the Rotary in your advertising, it suggests that the OC-5 can’t be very good.... and I suspect it may well be. Thanks for listening.

      He demos the pedal by itself, then goes on to explain and example of how it could be used with other pedals, if anything, it's good he also included how it can be used because not everyone who watches these vids knows what to do with a pedal.

    I wonder if this pedal would have played lowest octave for a electric guitar in 6 strings to play "Seven nation army" if it works for electric guitar?

      Really lol? I’m not really an “octave” guy but this looks incredibly deep and if you have any bass skills whatsoever it’ll be fun I’m sure. Mitch is doing his thing here, you do you Robby.

    I need a guitar effect for bass when the guitar player solos, any ideas or say I'm playing the bass line, i need to have an other guitar playing the rhythm part with the human playing the bass?( but I need an effect pedal that I can stomp on and off at the appropriate times.)

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, Josh! Sorry if I'm a little confused by your question, but I'm having trouble following all of it. This pedal does have an octave up effect on it, and can follow chords that you play, but it won't necessarily make the bass sound just like a guitar. For the second part of your question, I guess I would just recommend getting a looper pedal.
      Thanks for the interest!

      Hey, Gasa Band. Thanks for your interest in the Boss OC5! As with pretty much all Boss pedals, this features a buffered bypass. With that being said, this is one of the best Octave pedals on the market in my opinion.
      If you have any other questions please let me know! I’ve been playing guitar and bass for 20 years now and always happy to help. Thanks, and take care!
