FINALLY, this dude knows EXACTLY what he is doing. Well done sir. Ive been driving boats since I was 10 years old, and now at 53 have learned things, and you nailed it. Keep the bow up and nose up, hit the waves at 45 degrees ish, on an angle when you see huge assed waves, otherwise, stay straight on if your boat can take it, know your boat and learn your boat in other words. If you have a passenger, get them to the mid or rear of the boat to lift your bow up, or, change your tilt on your motor to lift the bow. Dont bother going too fast, just enough to lift the nose, and stay steady and true and somewhat dry, but expect to get wet, its a free shower lol. Wear life jackets and have a bailer ready in case. I just wired my bilge pump to a switch just in case as well. Again, super smart advice from a super experienced and competent man, Rich Fishing. Thank you for confirming what I thought I knew. Happy and safe fishing buddy from Canada!
@@bradpitt3810 no hull design is bad in waves, some are just better than others and it depends on the operator. Bass boat hulls and flats/ shallow bay boats are the same type of hull essentially other than transoms and on top, and I’ve seen flats boats in very large offshore waves.
This was some great advice young man, you handled your boat with great skill and demonstrated the correct and safest method for getting a small flat bottom boat through that chop. By the way, knowing the day's weather forecast before leaving the dock is THE MOST IMPORTANT first step in getting BACK TO THE DOCK safely in a small craft. Everyone should watch this this video.
Love your attitude, commentary and confidence. Almost 13 minutes of a boat running is difficult to pull off while keeping people watching to the end, but you executed it. I subscribed. Stay safe.
My boat is a 1988 Crestliner Ensign W deep V 14 foot boat. 68 wide, 31 deep at the bow. Also have a 1988 Evinrude 20 hp with the 25 hp manifold mod which I did not install yet. Rebuilt the boat with casting decks front and rear and rebuilt the Transom. Nice little machine, and my wife and I enjoy her very much. Really enjoyed your video, thanks for sharing.

This is exactly what i wanted to see!! Was thinking for a while to take my jon boat to Galveston bay!! Im hitting the bay as soon as this bad weather goes away!! Great video!
excellent job operating the boat. I operate a small tin boat in Chesapeake Bay Md. so I am familiar with the wind picking up. You are correct about the more you operate your boat in rough conditions the more confidence you have . My boat is a 14 ft vee bottom so I might get a little less pounding on boat but I do same approach you mentioned, hit waves at 45 degree angle, dont pound boat unnecessarily, keep an eye on the waves ,especially ones with white on top. great video .
Good video man. Thank you for sharing. I'm running a 16' Lowe flat bottom with a 20hp jet on the upper Potomac and susquehanna rivers. Pretty new boat owner, been fishing from them my whole life, its a whole different story when you are the captain and you are calling the shots and taking things into your own hands. Biggest thing is KNOW WHEN TO CALL IT OFF. If the forecast is calling for 10mph or above....boat stays on the trailer. That doesnt mean that things aren't going to pick up on you, sometimes stuff sneaks up quick and you gotta ride the rough out, but definitely best to avoid it if at all possible. The reality of taking a nose dive , especially here where the water is 40 degrees...no good. Stay safe out there man. Thanks again for the tips!
10mph and ur boat stay in the trailer?!?🤣🤣 I avidly boat the Susquehanna with a 1448 and also have a 20ft pleasure boat I’ve ran the worse winds so far this year in the 1448 mod v and have no issues
@@TheSteelerfool yeah....catch a 10 mph wind on the potomac and have the tide turn against the wind and you will learn a hard lesson. To each his own, but anyone who fishes wide water much will agree that 10 mph wind blowing against the current can get squirrelly quick in a small low draft boat. Good luck out there....youll need it eventually.
Solid video and advice man! Been rocking a 14' valco with a mercury 15 2 smoke for a couple years now and everything you said is 100% correct! Subscribed!
Good job on the teaching I don't own a boat yet but looking next year to buy one good tips I'll know if I ever take my boat out like that keep up the good work thank you brother
I always check the wind speeds for the waters I will be fishing. However every once in a while the weather man misses the forecast. When that happens I do the same as you: slow down, and take the waves at about a 45 degree angle. I also do the same thing with boat wake.
I've been in a jon boat in similar conditions a few times. What I dislike most about quick changing weather is the traffic jam it creates at the ramp. Great video.
That bay can get rough so can upper Sarasota bay I was on the upper Manatee about 5 years ago was about 6 mph winds as soon as I got to the ramp 30 - 40 mph winds hit glad you made it
GOOD THING YOU WERE PAYING ATTENTION...TO THE WIND BUILDING UP....I FEEL YOU ON THE HAND-CRAMPS...LOL.....ALWAYS LEARNING SOMETHING WHEN I'M OUT..I HAVE A 14 FOOT V-ALUMINUM
Man this was me today, I went out and the water was glass next thing I know 10+ mph winds and my flat bottom Jon boat was slapping I was way out too and I did the same thing cut across diagonally shit got scary for a while too some of the waves were big enough to flip me but I made it. Learned my lesson check the weather/wind hourly forecast before I head out next time
Ive been in waves pretty big in a 24 ft boat with like 3 and half ft walls with a 20 transom freakin waves were huge we knew to face em head on also in my dads 22ft yukon raider with walls about 3 ft high seen a few waves just the tip of them go into my dads boat makes your heart gwt going and the adrenaline going
Cool video. I take my jon down to Fl every year except not this winter because of Covid. Nature Coast or Sarasota are my favorite places. Jon boats are hard to sink, or at least I've never sunk mine and I've done some risky stuff in it. You're right about keeping the nose up in waves, It took me years to figure that out. Anyway, great video, good luck and have fun.
That's why you don't want to much weight on the front, keep that nose up... great job! A good bilge pump to take care of the little water that may come in so you can keep concentrating on the waves..
A jon boat is basically a large canoe with a small motor on it. It is not meant for open water like this. I’m afraid videos like this will cause people to put themselves in harms way trying to cross open water and drown! You also have to consider, he putting a lot of pressure on a small motor. If that motor happens to fail, that jon boat could easily take on water. Jon boats are meant for lakes and canals. If it takes on water in a canal, you are only a few feet from the bank. Just beware people!
Thanks for the video. Just what I needed to see, and learn from. I agree with the other reviewers, you handled it like a pro. I bought a Jon Boat and new 10HP, and it's my first boat. Like you I was anxious to go out despite the wind. So 2 days ago I was in the lake for the first time with about 10 knots gusting to 15, I got a little scared that I was in over my head once I started hitting the chop and realizing how long it would take to swim to shore in a worst case scenario. But from watching your video I think I handled it correctly. I slowed down to where was starting to come off plane so the bow came up a bit, and I also steered a course to cut the waves at an angle. I turned around after about 10 minutes. After watching you, I realize the boat could handle it, and the main thing is to not panic and find the optimum speed. It felt similar to the experience of learning to fly a small single engine airplane on instruments the couple times I actually flew into the clouds, or skiing steep narrow chutes where you can't stop, or steep trails on a dirt bike. As long as you don't panic, then you get to live, and it's great the first time you make it and build that confidence.
2 things needed on a jon boat in bigger water: 1) Life jacket. 2) Kill switch with a tether attached to the life jacket. Ending up in the water is more common than you think when operating a Jon boat.
I have a 14 foot Coleman scanoe and when I’m out on my local lake hitting those dam wake boat waves throwing 3 footers I do the same thing, weight in the back, trim her up and take your time
great advice who is the maker of your jon boat I like the layout of if nice and clean uncluttered and what would be the max weather you would take it out in comfortably thanks
