Although the police have strike down a lot of Dek wann,but they have evolved into something even worse... a subculture call 'song A' and 'song sor' (A is shorten from of agents,as in agents who deal drugs,sor is a Chinese word used to refer to older,sassy women) basically they changed to drive Fortuner (why this brand???) Too many infos I can't fit in here...
yeah this is really long and also incomplete, but I will try to clarify more - there's some unreformed dek waen and skoy, who most of the time involve drug dealing and some illegal/grey business and be relatively wealthy - they formed another subculture called ทรงเอ (means 'agent type', we call drug dealer 'เอเย่น', old thai way of pronouncing agents) and ทรงซ้อ ('sor' is equivalent of gang mistress) - they often found driving lowest trim Isuzu D-max (either extended cab or crew cab), cheaply remapped so it always spew black diesel smog, and recently turn to driving riced Yamaha X-max, 300cc maxi scooter - they often flaunt their wealth (illegal or not) because they are basically dek waen who feels like they get over the words of others who often said dek waen will never success with their way (they are still not getting there, they just feels like it)
Amazing video. I'm Thai. From my persepctive, dekwan problems come from; 1. Limited public transportation especially in the rural area. This make the parents to have no choice, but to buy them bikes, even though they are not old enough to have a license yet. 2. Many kids in the rural area live with their grandparents due to their parents working big cities. The grandparents tend to spoil their grandchildren and buy everything they want including bikes and modification parts. 3. From the above answer, many grandparents in Thailand like to spoil their grandchild and when they do something illegal and get arrest, they will say something like "My boy is a nice kid", even though the cops see a pill of amphetamine in his/her hand. "My grandkid is always good". Anyway, nice research and presentation. Love this content on these random sub cultures around the world. We have a very similar sub culture in the states now in urban areas but it's dirt bikes and 4 wheeler groups of kids just taking over roads.

If anyone's not clear on the phrase. I'd translate the phrase as the "Vroom kids" Dek = Kid Waan = Vroom I love the take you have on it. Thais just clamp down on this stuff. Because of the culture of seniority, the younger people's needs and wants tends to be forgotten. Kids only thought of in terms of "What can they do for us" So the level of thought given to them is simply "They make sound. just punish them and make them stop." The video made me realize that these guys are the local versions of the "sk8erbois" and to compare and contrast them really shows a difference in the cultural mindset both in the kids and society looking at them. Since they grew up believing that their feelings don't matter, they failed to realize the value of the hobbies and actions they do and respect it enough for it to grow into a thing. Perhaps the dreaded thai follower mindset stems from a lack of inherent internal value. Therefore value has to be pursued from other sources that people respect.

But I have also heard people in countryside of Thailand seeks to solve this kind of problem by using very scary way. They know that government officials can't solve problems effectively. They use the most monstrous way to deal with riders gangsters. Do you know "the unseen wire dead trap " for Dek Waen on the street? When these gangsters are riding on the street and hitting this trap, the unseen wire can chop off their head immediately. I know this from thai folklore horror story about Dek Waen headless ghost who was killed by this trap and became wandering ghost to haunt people. Maybe the ghost story teller want to use ghost story to make these Dek Waen to be afraid of their disturbing actions, I guess.

The tractor equiped with plowing blades. The rest is history.
Giving the kids a controlled space to race their bikes is the way to go, arresting and punishing solves nothing. Brute force is usually the cheapest solution, but a solution that won't realli solve anything long term just makes those who are annoyed by the racers happy to see some form of punishment being dealt.

My cousin's step-brother was a Dek Waen. He didn't have a complete family though we tried to be there for him. Got himself into trouble and accidents. Fortunately, he turned out okay. Doing pretty well as a bike mechanic.

This kind of culture is also present here in the Philippines. We coined them as kamote (which is a root crop here in the Philippines). They are notorious for not following the traffic laws and for not having the proper driver etiquette. They also have loud and pimped out small displacement bikes.
And too add to that they tend to be short tempered and will demand money from you when you caused an accident to them but will plea like beggar and beg not to pay if they did on you and some of them for some damn reason remove the mufflers on their bikes making them absurdly loud as possible the reason from what I gathered is that they want to have an illusion that they have a super engine underneath those sorry vehicles
And if those Kamote riders meet an accident, their families will quickly plead in Facebook for GCash donations to help their stupid rider-family member cover the medical bills.
You'll find tonnes of these guys in the south of Thailand and they're known locally as jorakay, meaning crocodile. It seems like teens do this for a few years then grow out of it. I've never felt they are aggressive but the noise can get annoying and some do drive recklessly.
As a Thai and someone that know a lot of dekwaen and former dekwaen. I think from the older person or foreigner it’s may seem like the government didn’t do anything to help them but from my perspective even though I don’t really like the government but I think they did help them but not directly say that this for dekwaen. They trying to advocate and teach them at school, building parks and sports courts in almost every town or city to channel their aggressiveness because from what I’ve seen dekwaen just kids that has some problems whether it’s from family, school or where else. And a lot of them I feel like they just wanted companionship, attention or just being influenced by environment.
Thai native here, I really enjoy how informative this video is - speaking on the problem of these "dek waen", the noise pollution they've caused and if they should lose their life you can't help but feel sorry for their parents. Nowadays in Thailand bigger bike is now easier to get than a decade ago. It's now said that "Dek Waen" is about behavior than about the bike. While smaller 150-350 scooter is still popular. Grown up "Dek Waen" whose can afford larger expensive bike like Yamaha R1 or BMW S1000R can still be called "Waen Upgraded" if they still ride recklessly.
The riding round terrorising the roads part reminds me of Chelsea bridge on a Friday night in the 80's. The main difference is we used to race to Heston services and back on bikes that could do 120-150mph.
in the US, where I live, these would be the kids with the lifted and muffler-less trucks daddy bought them. "Roll coal", in which they intentionally spew black soot into the air is another one of their call signs. I'm not sure what the UK version would be, but it could make a good vid topic too!
I visited Thailand last month and i have been going since 2010. Last time i visited prior to this was pre pandemic and i wondered this time where many of these bikes had gone too. This now clears up the question. I do actually quite like the style of some of these bikes.

In the Philippines dumb motorcycle riders are called "kamote riders" I could only assume it's a play on "kamen rider", the japanese superhero tv shows which was very popular in the Philippines locally dubbed "masked rider", but the 'kamen' was replaced by "kamote" or sweet potato. Exactly like Dek Waen, they're riding around cheap low CC scooters and motorcycles with open pipes that make the most annoying noise especially at night when people are sleeping; they're also known to "show off" at winding mountain roads where they love recording themselves illegally riding and banking on the opposite lane at blind curves, with some causing traffic collisions and most just stupidly slipping on the road. There's this sarcastic comment we usually say when we hear the annoying noise of a kamote rider's open pipe it's "WOW, he's running 120, 100 sound 20 speed"
I hate these Kamote riders and get annoyed hearing their loud mufflers even if there are such running slow and more when the rev their engines at night when you just want to rest and relax. Sometimes I just want to start bashing heads. I knows its bad but whenever I hear a kamote rider get into an accident because of their stupidity I laugh and say another minus one kamote rider weeded out by natural selection. Damn they are annoying.

I moved to Thailand in 2007 and learnt quite quickly about this movement. To this day they can still be spotted around. The pink Honda Supercub seems to be the moped of choice these days. Cheers x
here in brazil we have a similar thing called randamdam (which is how we describe the sound their bikes make). amazing how similar our cultures can be lollll
Oh, the Thailand version of the Malaysian "Mat Rempit". Similar to Dek Wan. They are a moped/scooter gang. And for many of us in the motorcycle scene consider the "Mat Rempit" is the OG for SEA gangster biker gang. Cuz a lot of the SEA scooter gang is heavily influenced by the "Mat Rempit' since somewhere around the 90's. Just lately those guys are looking over to the Thai's cuz of their superior scooter modification. Over here in Malaysia, the culture is slowing down unlike back in the late 90's to early 2000's. But it's still alive and kicking. And don't be confused because there is 2 version of those moped/scooter gangs here in Malaysia. One is the "Mat Rempit", those who is heavily involves in illegal racing, drugs and gangsterism. And there's the good guy scooter gang, the "Mat Moto". They go on convoys, does customization/beautification on their scooters and ngl, their scooters can go up to tens of thousand Malaysian Ringgit(MYR). Basically equivalent to USD2000++. They have a slogan, "kami bukan mat rempit. Kami mat moto. Hobi kami mahal"( we are not nat rempit, we are mat moto. Our hobby is expensive).
Not just in Asia, there are individual moped racer boys in UK council estates too. The only different in Bangkok is that mopeds are more common so they group together to form gangs.
A few days ago a girl at our school mother died in a motorcycle accident motorcycling in Thailand is so dangerous one time my mum was parking and a boy was driving super fast and he hit my mum then another car and he had to go to hospital but he was fine just had some cast on his ankle and in this area nobody wears helmet barley anyone near my school the place where my mum was parking my town barley anyone it not common so a lot of injuries happened luckily that boy was wearing a helmet it could be worst because I saw him take it off than spitting alot that boy was a teenager and the place where my mum was parking is mostly for cars but people use it as a shortcut but they should be more safety awareness because my mum said they don't wear helmets because they drive nearby but because of that thinking they are many fatel accidents because it not that far and mostly they went there a million times before I see the parents at my school pickup they children on motorcycle but barley anyone had helmet because they don't understand how dangerous it is
You should definitely do one of the other hated subculture. Modified pickup trucks called “Kraba Zing”, no different from Dek Waen, but the drivers are a bit older and could afford a pickup truck (pickups are quite popular for working classes). They’re overall terrible.
I totally enjoy the actual drag racing of scooters and low capacity bikes on track that Chris from CB Media showcases often. This seems like the Thai trying to emulate the bosozuko type of subculture found in Japan.

When I lived in Kobe I was literally only three blocks from HQ of Yamaguchi-gumi and have seen the next step for those boso guys. I’ve seen the real deal and it’s dark for sure and I never had any desire to emulate it but your point is valid in that many people do.
Made me laugh so much. I lived half my life in Bangkok because my father was a expat and that’s where my family lived. I’ve always had several theI bikes & they are in various stages of modification. Years ago (in the early 2000’s) I use to ride from my home just 45-50km south of Bangkok up to Bangkok to take in the sights of those beautiful balmy evenings around the city. I’m not a drinker & not interested in Thai hookers but have always been a bit of a petrol head 😂. I was too big to be a Dek Wan (too heavy to be competitive in a scooter) & besides rode a slightly larger capacity bike with manual gears (Most DekWan prefer autos because they’re faster off the lights and there’s heaps of cheap mods avail for these models) but always had a good laugh watching these guys and girls as I got about Bangkok. One thing not mentioned in this docco is that in Thailand it’s common for traffic lights to have timers on them, so as you sit at a red light a large digital timer counts down to 0 (when the light changes to green 90,89,88,87 etc etc 3,2,1 BOOM - away blast the Dek Wan 🤣 Lots of bikers killed on the streets of BKK especially during Song Kran festival. There’s always something to do in the city of angels, the city that never sleeps. Once a Bangkok rat, always a Bangkok rat. I know the Streets, Roads & Sois of Bangkok intimately- although for me, the best years of life in Bangkok have long passed, now when I think about it I either laugh or morn my lost youth. I’d like to point out, by the time DekWan became a thing I was already an old man & my Tgau friends always use to laugh as I ratted my way through Bangkok that I was the Grandfather of the DekWan, too old and too slow -- even the cops use to wave me through the roadblocks 😂 ❤ Bangkok ❤
I am Thai and face this problem every day because most children are poor and do not have a good education and lack of family training. As a result, they cause problems for society and most of the consequences come from poor governance. If politics doesn't solve them, I want to be a developed country and not a underdeveloped country to be insulted.
I have to say living in Thailand for 6 months your country is beautiful. I have been in other SEA countries and the Thai people and country are very well developed and developing. Teenagers in London are taking drugs and stabbing each other every day. So really this guy's docu is nothing to worry about.

Fun fact, most of those "scooters" aren't actually scooters, they're a type of motorcycles that are practically nonexistent in Europe and North America but are hugely popular in Southeast Asia and Latin America. Those scooter-looking motorcycles are actually underbones, also known as semiautomatics or CUBs, and I have heard from someone from SEA that they call them "duck bikes" over there. They're small displacement motorcycles (typically 110 to 150cc) with a siluete that very closely resembles scooters, but unlike scooters which have their engines mounted to the swing arm and a CVT transmission, underbones have a traditional motorcycle engine connected to the rear wheel by a chain like in any regular motorcycle, and they have a gearbox. However, unlike a traditional motorcycle, they don't have a manual clutch, but a centrifugal one, that's what makes them semiautomatic, because you don't have to manually use the clutch when you want to switch gears. And apart from the centrifugal clutch, their other key difference is that you have the gas tank under your seat like in a scooter instead of between your legs, leaving that space open for you to get on sliding your legs from the front like if you were getting on a scooter. Probably the most known motorcycle of this category is the Honda Super Cub. They're very practical for urban riding because they're very easy to use, super fuel efficient, pretty comfortable, and they share some of the key advantages of scooters like a legs shield protecting your clothes from getting dirty, and the underseat storage.

I live in Thailand, and I see this quite a bit. I do live in the country side on a small island, they are ANNOYING. I would be sitting in a restaurant, and you would just see like 5 people driving their crappy motorbike which they had changed to be super loud, it’s louder than you would think! Sometimes you would be driving on a really high mountain and you will just see a guy who is driving his bike but like he would have both of his legs on one side of the bike. Also sometimes you would see like 12 year olds on motorbikes here and it’s really scary, but it’s normal and the police here in the countryside is far and few. I live in rural area in Kalasin. I was walking to local store and suddenly I heard very loud engine noise. I was so sudden I thought I would have a heart attack.
One way in which this phenomenon has lessened is that there are ever more public racing tracks being opened around the country where you can pay to go and race. And so as these kids get older, some of them are actually becoming very good professional GP racers
As a British expat who has lived in Thailand over 20 years I am delighted to see videos like this. My half Thai son who is now 21 tells me that the culture still exists but it's now not such a big deal, he says it was more like yet another youth craze when it hit the headlines. I did a spittake when yiu mentioned the Honda Wave lmao. I grew up with that bike, my parents had one for YEARS, it was amazing how they managed to keep it running for all that time
What a blast to the past! I was still in Thailand when the crackdowns started. These bike boys have been an accepted part of life for people in suburban provinces (in that you don't like them but eh *shrugging* . Just steer well clear of them, because they are usually armed and violent). But I think the uproar started when we learned just how large they were becoming all of a sudden, how they actually set up their own racetracks and claimed whole lanes of streets for themselves to race at night. Smartphone culture started around that time, and people at home started sending video clips to mainstream TV news programs and brought the issue to the limelight, pressuring the police to do something. I remember there used to be a pop song called "Waen Boy & Skoy Girl" that came out when I was a kid. I was also told the terms originated from "Dek Wen" which is a swear word meaning "brat", and "Gong goi" which is a type of demon in Thai belief, but I don't know if there is research supporting this theory XD.

In Thailand, there is an urban legend(?) About countryside locals putting up thin metal wires at night to hurt or kill Dek wann. I'm not fully sure tho, it was on the news once or twice as well as a scene in one of the Thai movie. Fellow Thai bros, help me confirm this one.
The problem with the wire trap is that it can be cover up relatively easy, since most people would rule it as normal accident. However, I remember the news about some dude who did drive by shooting on Dek Wan with his Hatchback back in early 2010's.

In the Philippines, we call the kind of bike modification as "Thai Concept". The Philippines also has this kind of biker subculture, I guess copying from the Dek Wans of Thailand.
Dek Wans are more common in suburban areas and industrial cities like Samut Prakan, Pathum Thani, Chonburi, Ayutthaya. Youth night racing has been around since the late 80s but words of "Dek Wan" appears around 2003-04.
In the Philippines, this style is emulated. I like some its aspects, but hate most of it: Illegal drag races in public roads, noisy scooters in small neighborhoods.
In the Philippines, "Thai builds" are glorified and people go out of their way to make their scooters like this and a lot of local parts shops import parts from Thailand. They act like they're a discriminated minority because police are more aggressive against bikes that relatively look like such a build but the truth is they just make everything unsafe on the road.
I bet somebody could turn this "freestyle scootering" into a sport. After all, skateboarding, BMX biking, and NASCAR all started with young men engaging in criminal mischief with their vehicles. Somebody should go to Bangkok and open a skate rink for bikes.
I've been to Thailand a few times and spent 9 months there in total (originally to learn Muay Thai, but then just to enjoy Thailand). One time I went to Buri Ram to see a World Super Bike race. The plane landed in the middle of nowhere, there were hardly any english signs and you could buy a grilled chicken leg for 10 baht (half a dollar). I ended up fishing rays from a pond. The owner of the pond bought the rays from another guy who had them for meat export, but then it became illegal. He told me about the WSBK/MotoGP races - it's used to wash money. Basically they say that they sold X amount of tickets, but they give them away for free. And indeed, there was nearly no one watching the races. Participants were racing on screaming mopeds! It was bizarre compared to Europe's drag races. I still have a video somewhere. Now, like 5 years later, I finally know what it was all about, thanks :)
Worst than Japanese version since they are mostly not cause violent to random people and just have fun on their teenager days before leave it behind after graduted highschool. This one is more agressive and more dangerous. They are just like those gangster from GTA. Mostly came from very lower class and has no future that why they being like that. I'm torn about not liking this subculture. I love these small cc bikes and the modding community that exists. I understand the negativity and nuisance they can cause but I grew up around people like this in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Most of the time it's just bored kids having fun, which I admit can lead to a shit ton of trouble. I dunno man. As much as I'm against causing trouble and annoyance for the law and others. I would really miss this culture if it was gone

This kinda reminds me of the late 90s early 00s streat racing, I remember the authorities around where I lived tackling it by a combination of encouraging proper racing (like get the local track to have open races on off times), and crackdowns
there is also Dek Chang (เด็กช่าง) a Technical high school gang that like to fight with melee weapons and handmade guns, grenades for armour they use jacket and helmet but they often wear their own school uniform to show what school they associated with. they fight other rival high school daily
Malaysia has almost exactly, if not exactly, the same thing called 'Rempit' (RRREEEEEEMMMM PRRRIIIITT You get the idea).🤪 Even down to the possible early to mid 2000s origins off of a frickin movie that went ultramega mainstream and just took over the national consciousness, to the historical trajectory up until today, with almost exactly the same methods/mannerisms/motivations/etc😮💨 Now I personally don't know or even care if the 'Rempit' life is still a major thing in Malaysia, but these days, there're more little shits using plain old bikes, usually on the cheaper end, doing almost exactly the same things with those Rempits using motorbikes🥱 Are they a pain in the ass? Like there was even a need to ask. Buggers have a hard on for doing some of the nastiest shit at times, almost all of em are insanely rude just for the hell of it, and almost all of em quit by the time they hit their late 30s😌 Same shit in Japan too especially back during the 70s-90s🤔 No idea if these kinds of things go way back in our entire history, but I wouldn't be surprised at all. The 'urban/civilized/city life' aspect to all of these lifestyles are probably THE KEY to predicting how, why and when they'll develop, almost like a sociocultural feature or law🧐

I love riding with these kids. Even though I'm on a twice the size supermoto and have been riding and racing motorcycles longer than they've lived they still show of some propper skill. I'll probably get myself a wave and join the culture because I got mad respect these kids.
Here in the Philippines bro we also have the same culuture, it is called "Digmaan" or War. It is basically a illegal street drag racing with hundreds and hundres of bikes coming from different places. And I, too experienced it first hand because i used to join that street drag party too. So much memories on that nights. BTW New Subscriber here.
We have this in the Philippines too, people who ride this type of motorbike are the ones who would get into an accident ALL THE TIME. Trying to beat the red light and would even race legit ninja bikes in the freeway.

In the States, especially on the east coast, we have a similar subculture but based around dirtbikes and quads. Some people hate it, but I just accept it as part of city life
In the Philippines we have this concept called Thai concept on the motorbikes and also they a nuisance on the road. As a rider myself people with Thai concept often go showing off on the road and sometimes they challenge someone with a higher cc bike and they dont even have helmets and gears
There's some of this here in South Korea too. Young guys with cheap scooters that they have tricked out in some way, often with speakers, horns and loud exhaust pipes. They ride them around late at night or early morning making noise. The biggest difference is they are more often solo. Maybe in very small groups. It's rare that there's a lot of them. Sometimes you'll see just one or two going up and down the same couple kilometers of road weaving through traffic, making a U-turn then doing it again and again. Every once in a while a middle school or high school student will turn up dead because they had an accident.

- there's some unreformed dek waen and skoy, who most of the time involve drug dealing and some illegal/grey business and be relatively wealthy
- they formed another subculture called ทรงเอ (means 'agent type', we call drug dealer 'เอเย่น', old thai way of pronouncing agents) and ทรงซ้อ ('sor' is equivalent of gang mistress)
- they often found driving lowest trim Isuzu D-max (either extended cab or crew cab), cheaply remapped so it always spew black diesel smog, and recently turn to driving riced Yamaha X-max, 300cc maxi scooter
- they often flaunt their wealth (illegal or not) because they are basically dek waen who feels like they get over the words of others who often said dek waen will never success with their way (they are still not getting there, they just feels like it)

Amazing video. I'm Thai. From my persepctive, dekwan problems come from;
1. Limited public transportation especially in the rural area. This make the parents to have no choice, but to buy them bikes, even though they are not old enough to have a license yet.
2. Many kids in the rural area live with their grandparents due to their parents working big cities. The grandparents tend to spoil their grandchildren and buy everything they want including bikes and modification parts.
3. From the above answer, many grandparents in Thailand like to spoil their grandchild and when they do something illegal and get arrest, they will say something like "My boy is a nice kid", even though the cops see a pill of amphetamine in his/her hand. "My grandkid is always good".

Because of the culture of seniority, the younger people's needs and wants tends to be forgotten. Kids only thought of in terms of "What can they do for us"
So the level of thought given to them is simply "They make sound. just punish them and make them stop."
The video made me realize that these guys are the local versions of the "sk8erbois" and to compare and contrast them really shows a difference in the cultural mindset both in the kids and society looking at them. Since they grew up believing that their feelings don't matter, they failed to realize the value of the hobbies and actions they do and respect it enough for it to grow into a thing.
Perhaps the dreaded thai follower mindset stems from a lack of inherent internal value. Therefore value has to be pursued from other sources that people respect.

Giving the kids a controlled space to race their bikes is the way to go, arresting and punishing solves nothing. My cousin's step-brother was a Dek Waen. He didn't have a complete family though we tried to be there for him. Got himself into trouble and accidents. Fortunately, he turned out okay. Doing pretty well as a bike mechanic.

This kind of culture is also present here in the Philippines. We coined them as kamote (which is a root crop here in the Philippines). They are notorious for not following the traffic laws and for not having the proper driver etiquette. They also have loud and pimped out small displacement bikes.
And too add to that they tend to be short tempered and will demand money from you when you caused an accident to them but will plea like beggar and beg not to pay if they did on you and some of them for some damn reason remove the mufflers on their bikes making them absurdly loud as possible the reason from what I gathered is that they want to have an illusion that they have a super engine underneath those sorry vehicles
And if those Kamote riders meet an accident, their families will quickly plead in Facebook for GCash donations to help their stupid rider-family member cover the medical bills.
You'll find tonnes of these guys in the south of Thailand and they're known locally as jorakay, meaning crocodile. It seems like teens do this for a few years then grow out of it. I've never felt they are aggressive but the noise can get annoying and some do drive recklessly.
As a Thai and someone that know a lot of dekwaen and former dekwaen. I think from the older person or foreigner it’s may seem like the government didn’t do anything to help them but from my perspective even though I don’t really like the government but I think they did help them but not directly say that this for dekwaen. They trying to advocate and teach them at school, building parks and sports courts in almost every town or city to channel their aggressiveness because from what I’ve seen dekwaen just kids that has some problems whether it’s from family, school or where else. And a lot of them I feel like they just wanted companionship, attention or just being influenced by environment.
They just have to be beaten well ...

Nowadays in Thailand bigger bike is now easier to get than a decade ago. It's now said that "Dek Waen" is about behavior than about the bike. While smaller 150-350 scooter is still popular. Grown up "Dek Waen" whose can afford larger expensive bike like Yamaha R1 or BMW S1000R can still be called "Waen Upgraded" if they still ride recklessly.

The riding round terrorising the roads part reminds me of Chelsea bridge on a Friday night in the 80's. The main difference is we used to race to Heston services and back on bikes that could do 120-150mph.

I visited Thailand last month and i have been going since 2010. Last time i visited prior to this was pre pandemic and i wondered this time where many of these bikes had gone too. This now clears up the question. I do actually quite like the style of some of these bikes.
This was actually the best episode that you’ve done so far! Interesting, exiting and relatable for me at least when it comes to being a rebel in my youth. In the Philippines dumb motorcycle riders are called "kamote riders" I could only assume it's a play on "kamen rider", the japanese superhero tv shows which was very popular in the Philippines locally dubbed "masked rider", but the 'kamen' was replaced by "kamote" or sweet potato.
Exactly like Dek Waen, they're riding around cheap low CC scooters and motorcycles with open pipes that make the most annoying noise especially at night when people are sleeping; they're also known to "show off" at winding mountain roads where they love recording themselves illegally riding and banking on the opposite lane at blind curves, with some causing traffic collisions and most just stupidly slipping on the road.
There's this sarcastic comment we usually say when we hear the annoying noise of a kamote rider's open pipe it's "WOW, he's running 120, 100 sound 20 speed"

Oh, the Thailand version of the Malaysian "Mat Rempit". Similar to Dek Wan. They are a moped/scooter gang. And for many of us in the motorcycle scene consider the "Mat Rempit" is the OG for SEA gangster biker gang. Cuz a lot of the SEA scooter gang is heavily influenced by the "Mat Rempit' since somewhere around the 90's. Just lately those guys are looking over to the Thai's cuz of their superior scooter modification. Over here in Malaysia, the culture is slowing down unlike back in the late 90's to early 2000's. But it's still alive and kicking.

Not just in Asia, there are individual moped racer boys in UK council estates too. The only different in Bangkok is that mopeds are more common so they group together to form gangs.
A few days ago a girl at our school mother died in a motorcycle accident motorcycling in Thailand is so dangerous one time my mum was parking and a boy was driving super fast and he hit my mum then another car and he had to go to hospital but he was fine just had some cast on his ankle and in this area nobody wears helmet barley anyone near my school the place where my mum was parking my town barley anyone it not common so a lot of injuries happened luckily that boy was wearing a helmet it could be worst because I saw him take it off than spitting alot that boy was a teenager and the place where my mum was parking is mostly for cars but people use it as a shortcut but they should be more safety awareness because my mum said they don't wear helmets because they drive nearby but because of that thinking they are many fatel accidents because it not that far and mostly they went there a million times before I see the parents at my school pickup they children on motorcycle but barley anyone had helmet because they don't understand how dangerous it is
You should definitely do one of the other hated subculture. Modified pickup trucks called “Kraba Zing”, no different from Dek Waen, but the drivers are a bit older and could afford a pickup truck (pickups are quite popular for working classes). They’re overall terrible.

I totally enjoy the actual drag racing of scooters and low capacity bikes on track that Chris from CB Media showcases often. This seems like the Thai trying to emulate the bosozuko type of subculture found in Japan.

When I lived in Kobe I was literally only three blocks from HQ of Yamaguchi-gumi and have seen the next step for those boso guys. I’ve seen the real deal and it’s dark for sure and I never had any desire to emulate it but your point is valid in that many people do.

Made me laugh so much. I lived half my life in Bangkok because my father was a expat and that’s where my family lived. I’ve always had several theI bikes & they are in various stages of modification.
Years ago (in the early 2000’s) I use to ride from my home just 45-50km south of Bangkok up to Bangkok to take in the sights of those beautiful balmy evenings around the city. I’m not a drinker & not interested in Thai hookers but have always been a bit of a petrol head 😂.
I was too big to be a Dek Wan (too heavy to be competitive in a scooter) & besides rode a slightly larger capacity bike with manual gears (Most DekWan prefer autos because they’re faster off the lights and there’s heaps of cheap mods avail for these models) but always had a good laugh watching these guys and girls as I got about Bangkok.
One thing not mentioned in this docco is that in Thailand it’s common for traffic lights to have timers on them, so as you sit at a red light a large digital timer counts down to 0 (when the light changes to green 90,89,88,87 etc etc 3,2,1 BOOM - away blast the Dek Wan 🤣

I know the Streets, Roads & Sois of Bangkok intimately- although for me, the best years of life in Bangkok have long passed, now when I think about it I either laugh or morn my lost youth. I’d like to point out, by the time DekWan became a thing I was already an old man & my Tgau friends always use to laugh as I ratted my way through Bangkok that I was the Grandfather of the DekWan, too old and too slow -- even the cops use to wave me through the roadblocks 😂

I am Thai and face this problem every day because most children are poor and do not have a good education and lack of family training. As a result, they cause problems for society and most of the consequences come from poor governance. If politics doesn't solve them, I want to be a developed country and not a underdeveloped country to be insulted.
I have to say living in Thailand for 6 months your country is beautiful. I have been in other SEA countries and the Thai people and country are very well developed and developing. Teenagers in London are taking drugs and stabbing each other every day. So really this guy's docu is nothing to worry about.

Fun fact, most of those "scooters" aren't actually scooters, they're a type of motorcycles that are practically nonexistent in Europe and North America but are hugely popular in Southeast Asia and Latin America. Those scooter-looking motorcycles are actually underbones, also known as semiautomatics or CUBs, and I have heard from someone from SEA that they call them "duck bikes" over there. They're small displacement motorcycles (typically 110 to 150cc) with a siluete that very closely resembles scooters, but unlike scooters which have their engines mounted to the swing arm and a CVT transmission, underbones have a traditional motorcycle engine connected to the rear wheel by a chain like in any regular motorcycle, and they have a gearbox. However, unlike a traditional motorcycle, they don't have a manual clutch, but a centrifugal one, that's what makes them semiautomatic, because you don't have to manually use the clutch when you want to switch gears. And apart from the centrifugal clutch, their other key difference is that you have the gas tank under your seat like in a scooter instead of between your legs, leaving that space open for you to get on sliding your legs from the front like if you were getting on a scooter. Probably the most known motorcycle of this category is the Honda Super Cub.
They're very practical for urban riding because they're very easy to use, super fuel efficient, pretty comfortable, and they share some of the key advantages of scooters like a legs shield protecting your clothes from getting dirty, and the underseat storage.
They're very affordable too, you can have 10x Honda Wave/Yamaha Mio for the price of a Toyota Vios

Same in Philippines, we call them Kamote Riders. 110cc - 120 cc, modified muffler that's loud, lowered, skeleton frame, and sometimes wear helmet, cyclers helmet with loss buckle. Funny thing is when they have an accidents, most of them ask for alms through GCash🤣.
I live in Thailand, and I see this quite a bit. I do live in the country side on a small island, they are ANNOYING. I would be sitting in a restaurant, and you would just see like 5 people driving their crappy motorbike which they had changed to be super loud, it’s louder than you would think!
Sometimes you would be driving on a really high mountain and you will just see a guy who is driving his bike but like he would have both of his legs on one side of the bike.
Also sometimes you would see like 12 year olds on motorbikes here and it’s really scary, but it’s normal and the police here in the countryside is far and few.

One way in which this phenomenon has lessened is that there are ever more public racing tracks being opened around the country where you can pay to go and race. And so as these kids get older, some of them are actually becoming very good professional GP racers
As a British expat who has lived in Thailand over 20 years I am delighted to see videos like this. My half Thai son who is now 21 tells me that the culture still exists but it's now not such a big deal, he says it was more like yet another youth craze when it hit the headlines.

I did a spittake when yiu mentioned the Honda Wave lmao. I grew up with that bike, my parents had one for YEARS, it was amazing how they managed to keep it running for all that time
What a blast to the past! I was still in Thailand when the crackdowns started. These bike boys have been an accepted part of life for people in suburban provinces (in that you don't like them but eh *shrugging* . Just steer well clear of them, because they are usually armed and violent).
But I think the uproar started when we learned just how large they were becoming all of a sudden, how they actually set up their own racetracks and claimed whole lanes of streets for themselves to race at night. Smartphone culture started around that time, and people at home started sending video clips to mainstream TV news programs and brought the issue to the limelight, pressuring the police to do something.
I remember there used to be a pop song called "Waen Boy & Skoy Girl" that came out when I was a kid. I was also told the terms originated from "Dek Wen" which is a swear word meaning "brat", and "Gong goi" which is a type of demon in Thai belief, but I don't know if there is research supporting this theory XD.
I used to love watching these Guys when I was in BKK.. some of these Guys are INSANE.. flying through tiny spaces on them bikes at full speed lol.. madness.
In Thailand, there is an urban legend(?) About countryside locals putting up thin metal wires at night to hurt or kill Dek wann. I'm not fully sure tho, it was on the news once or twice as well as a scene in one of the Thai movie. Fellow Thai bros, help me confirm this one.
The problem with the wire trap is that it can be cover up relatively easy, since most people would rule it as normal accident. However, I remember the news about some dude who did drive by shooting on Dek Wan with his Hatchback back in early 2010's.
I remember my uncle talking about story where his someone got decapitated via metal wire while going full speed on empty road at night

In the Philippines, we call the kind of bike modification as "Thai Concept". The Philippines also has this kind of biker subculture, I guess copying from the Dek Wans of Thailand.
Dek Wans are more common in suburban areas and industrial cities like Samut Prakan, Pathum Thani, Chonburi, Ayutthaya. Youth night racing has been around since the late 80s but words of "Dek Wan" appears around 2003-04.

In the Philippines, "Thai builds" are glorified and people go out of their way to make their scooters like this and a lot of local parts shops import parts from Thailand. They act like they're a discriminated minority because police are more aggressive against bikes that relatively look like such a build but the truth is they just make everything unsafe on the road.

I've been to Thailand a few times and spent 9 months there in total (originally to learn Muay Thai, but then just to enjoy Thailand). One time I went to Buri Ram to see a World Super Bike race. The plane landed in the middle of nowhere, there were hardly any english signs and you could buy a grilled chicken leg for 10 baht (half a dollar). I ended up fishing rays from a pond. The owner of the pond bought the rays from another guy who had them for meat export, but then it became illegal. He told me about the WSBK/MotoGP races - it's used to wash money. Basically they say that they sold X amount of tickets, but they give them away for free. And indeed, there was nearly no one watching the races. Buri Ram circuit has accommodation directly at the circuit, so you can watch races from your window - still it was empty. But in the evening, there was kind of a drag race. Participants were racing on screaming mopeds! It was bizarre compared to Europe's drag races. I still have a video somewhere. Now, like 5 years later, I finally know what it was all about, thanks :)
Some Thais they use a sling and tied it with the electric pole. So sometime there was a news that "dek waen’s” head was cut by a sling.
So, basically these are the Bosozoku of Bangkok.

I'm torn about not liking this subculture. I love these small cc bikes and the modding community that exists. I understand the negativity and nuisance they can cause but I grew up around people like this in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Most of the time it's just bored kids having fun, which I admit can lead to a shit ton of trouble. I dunno man. As much as I'm against causing trouble and annoyance for the law and others. I would really miss this culture if it was gone

This kinda reminds me of the late 90s early 00s streat racing, I remember the authorities around where I lived tackling it by a combination of encouraging proper racing (like get the local track to have open races on off times), and crackdowns
there is also Dek Chang (เด็กช่าง) a Technical high school gang that like to fight with melee weapons and handmade guns, grenades for armour they use jacket and helmet but they often wear their own school uniform to show what school they associated with. they fight other rival high school daily

I love riding with these kids. Even though I'm on a twice the size supermoto and have been riding and racing motorcycles longer than they've lived they still show of some propper skill.
I'll probably get myself a wave and join the culture because I got mad respect these kids.
Here in the Philippines bro we also have the same culuture, it is called "Digmaan" or War.
It is basically a illegal street drag racing with hundreds and hundres of bikes coming from different places. And I, too experienced it first hand because i used to join that street drag party too. So much memories on that nights.

We have this in the Philippines too, people who ride this type of motorbike are the ones who would get into an accident ALL THE TIME. Trying to beat the red light and would even race legit ninja bikes in the freeway.

In the States, especially on the east coast, we have a similar subculture but based around dirtbikes and quads. Some people hate it, but I just accept it as part of city life
In the Philippines we have this concept called Thai concept on the motorbikes and also they a nuisance on the road. As a rider myself people with Thai concept often go showing off on the road and sometimes they challenge someone with a higher cc bike and they dont even have helmets and gears

There's some of this here in South Korea too. Young guys with cheap scooters that they have tricked out in some way, often with speakers, horns and loud exhaust pipes. They ride them around late at night or early morning making noise. The biggest difference is they are more often solo. Maybe in very small groups. It's rare that there's a lot of them.
Sometimes you'll see just one or two going up and down the same couple kilometers of road weaving through traffic, making a U-turn then doing it again and again. Every once in a while a middle school or high school student will turn up dead because they had an accident.
