Here are the six reasons behind the downfall of the Pakistan cricket team:
1. Babar Azam is an Overrated Player: When Pakistan defeated India in the T20 World Cup on 23 October 2021, some Pakistani fans, journalists, and former cricketers quickly declared Babar Azam as Pakistan’s greatest batter and captain, claiming no one had ever come close. However, this is not true. Pakistan has had legends like Younis Khan, Saeed Anwar, Misbah-ul-Haq, and Zaheer Abbas, and compared to them, Babar Azam still has a long way to go.
2. Shaheen Afridi Overhyped: After Pakistan's victory against India in the 2021 T20 World Cup, Shaheen Afridi was compared to Wasim Akram, which was an exaggeration based on just one match. However, when compared to Wasim Akram, Shaheen Afridi still has a lot to prove. Since that win, Pakistan's cricket performance has declined.
3. PCB and Senior Players Blocking Youngsters: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and senior players like Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Afridi rarely give youngsters a chance. Instead of utilizing young talent in series against teams like Zimbabwe, Ireland, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh to build bench strength, these senior players continue to play in such series.
4. Babar Azam’s Failure in Big Matches: Babar Azam often fails to perform in big matches in ODIs, T20s, and Tests, which puts additional pressure on the Pakistan team.
5. T20 Strike Rates of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan: Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan do not deserve spots in Pakistan’s T20 team based on their performances. Their T20 strike rates, around 128, are not suitable for the modern T20 game, yet they continue to play.
6. Dropping Mohammad Haris: Mohammad Haris was dropped from the T20 team after fears arose that he might replace Mohammad Rizwan. Haris played an outstanding innings against South Africa in the 2022 T20 World Cup, but despite his performance, he was excluded from the team afterward.
