    The Maverick 88 security is my backup to my 590 Shockwave 18.5. I set the 88 up just like my 590 with a pic rail and a SOLOFISH SL-1107 Green Laser Sight, birds head rear grip and loaded with 8 Federal Shorty #4 buck. Had to drill and tap the receiver for the rail but Saved a few hundred bucks over the 590.

    I run a 500 in .410 for work ( ag pesting ) Ten years and a few thousand cartridges through it and not a squeak out of it. Excellent shotgun design.

      I was thinking of getting the 7+1 variant. Is there anything important that I should know before purchasing?

    • @DogeMcLovin
      @DogeMcLovin ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SargeantPepper-gp9zi From a quality standpoint I can't think of anything. It's simple with no frills.
      I like the 7+1 model because there is no additional work in installing a different magazine tube (a very involved process) and it sits flush with the barrel. Way better than losing 2 rounds for a barrel that is only 1.5" shorter.
      However, I will say the length of pull on Maverick 88 stocks is surprisingly long at 14.5"! I definitely have to bend the arm a little to get a good purchase.

    I've had my 20 inch barrelled version of this gun for 30 years, and it's been completely reliable and still shoots great with no issues. I now have Maverick 88s in 3 versions, including a 26 inch 20 gauge version which is my rabbit gun. Love these things!

    What sling and swivels do you recommend, and do you use saddles on your shot gun or is that bulky and a waste of time? Is a belt with extra shells better than a sling with extra shells.

    The internal guide rails are retaining by spring pressure. nothing wrong with this, BUT. if you drop it the rails will most likely dislodge rendering it useless. It has to be disassembled to reset them. It is still one of my favorites and reliable. Just don't drop it.

    Your gun reviews are all meat-and-potatoes. They are straight-forward and honest, and they get right to the point with no hype or prattle. Job well-done! (Heck, I don't need another shotgun and you've just convinced me to buy a Maverick 88.)

      For further convincing (if needed lol) the 500 round torture test on the 20" Security model at TFB-TV, is a must watch. All the accessories flying off but the gun surviving really drives home the fact that the recoil is punishing. In other words, it's a shotgun.

    I have a Maverick 88 Security 20'' version I added an oversized Brass bead and took off the synthetic furniture and added vintage walnut corncob forearm and stock. I got it from a Police auction New old stock it still had the original wax tape on the butt paid $60. At first glance it looks like the new retro grade 500's. I have shot a thousand rounds out of it with no problems. These really are great budget shotguns.

    The 88 was what we at OPSol Texas used when designing and testing our mini-clip back in 2012-2015. Mini shells are becoming much more popular, so much so that after introducing the Shockwave with our miniclip, Mossberg has re designed the 500 (the 500 s) incorporating our ideas to allow minishells to feed.
    the other nice thing about 500s, is most of the guts are interchangeable. For $229 at Academy these days, it is tough to beat.

    • @Hjerte_Verke
      @Hjerte_Verke 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah I read about the new Mossberg 590S optic ready shotgun that is modified from the get-go to handle mini-shells. Sad to see that actually, because they are circumventing your sales.

      @@Hjerte_Verke Thanks for kind words. Life goes on. Our goal was to help people have an effective platform for home defense (i.e., wives and daughters) so the more people are aware of the minishell option, the better. I have yet to take a hard look at the S, but will as soon as I find one. It's $100 at least more expensive, with more moving parts.....so you can put different lengths in a the same time. For my family, we use one shell for home defense that everyone has trained on. Who puts 3 different 357 or 9 mm rounds in their bedside pistol?

    Well no wonder I like Mossberg... I was born in 1961. lol I love my 590. I just ordered a Maverick as a truck gun = they have excellent reviews and the little shortfalls are not important to me - like having to take your hand off the grip to re-activate the safety - not a problem. For $220, how can you go wrong? American made in Maverick County TX (OK, I think the parts are hecho in Mexico but they are assembled in TX). Great review sir thank you!

    First video watched and am impressed. Good production values, good desk-based discussion format with speaker and product both in view (as opposed to the annoying TH-cam habit of a speaker continually moving the product up and in front of the camera, while it struggles to focus) and kudos to a man who can speak at length, no pauses, and the net result is not 500 cuts/edits stitched together to make a video.

    Great review. Thanks. I picked up one of these yesterday at one of our locally owned gun stores for $249. This is my first shotgun. I wanted one to add to our home defense collection. Something effective and affordable. The salesman said it was their #1 seller for home defense. Easy decision. I was in/out as quickly as they could run the paperwork through. Thanks to it being hunting season, rampant crime and open borders, the place was BUSY.

    I love mine. The cross bolt safety actually is attractive if you move to a pistol grip. The 500 style safety is best with a traditional stock. All and All, the Mossberg shotguns are the best bang for the buck in shotguns, the pun is real and intended, hehe

    👍 Nice overview of a shotgun I just purchased in 20 gauge. Appears you believe I made a good selection for a little hunting and a little sporting clay rounds. Won’t replace my H&R single shot, but will make a good companion piece. Single shot excellent for hunting, not so much for sporting clays.

    2:44 Have heard legions of Mossberg fans (and detractors) decry the different cross-bolt safety on the Maverick 88 versus the "superior" tang safety of the M500s. Sure the 500 safety is great as it accommodates right and left handed shooters but it is a detriment to anyone wanting a pistol grip or pistol grip (tactical style) buttstock since manipulation of the safety then requires you to remove your hand from the grip area to reach the safety. Just something to think about--and not all the more expensive Mossbergs have the tang safety; there's quite a few Mossberg semi auto shotguns with a trigger guard/cross-bolt safety.
