Tatsusama well very few people are dragons and few few people would know that dragons like to larp to a fault. just like I.R.L. few people are bonified badass.
Steel dragon who didn't know they were a dragon from a curse etc. etc. and blacked out once a month to feed. Could be an great end-campaign reveal to the group as the character remembered.
Countfoscolikesmice trying to find a DM that will allow a player character like that with a sorcerer/fighter multiclass who's true race is Steel Dragon who has lost his draconic memories but his draconic bloodline being that of steel without the usual sorcerer mutations would be a subtle hint of his true nature. That and his inhuman appetite. He'd have the disadvantage of a malnourished dragon of course since a human diet won't be enough to fill a fucking dragon and weaken it severely.
Done this. Just finished a 2yr (real time) campaign. And yes, the reveal was VERY shocking for our 8 member party. Biggest surprise was that the DM & I managed to keep this hidden for so long.
@@AmaryInkawult have you looked at Hoard of the Dragon Queen? Song dragons might rival Steel dragons for "most time spent in humanoid form." Lol I am very much in favor of players choosing exotic races and am a fan of creatures that are monstrous, powerful or versatile, SO LONG AS THEY CAN PASS IN A SETTLEMENT. This fits, so it sits. Gonna use this, thanks for the vid!

There's a steel dragon (unbeknownst to my players) who runs a meatshop in a city they hang out in. He enjoys living human life, going so far as to let the local mafia run a protection racket on him, just because it's fun and he knows they can't actually harm him. He particularly loves finding charismatic people, who can hold a good converation with him, and hiring them as help. One of my players, a redemption paladin and war veteran, has found herself in this situation (and also is quite smitten with him, which is going to be interesting to sort out when his identity gets revealed)
"Gods of gods, hear my wish! Ten thousand flying and naturally invisible rustmonsters , totally loyal to my command and my intensions of command and to not find the loop holes within. First they need to fly over the steel dragon , pooping like seagulls..."
I agree playing as a Steel Dragon would be epic ;] I would personally use my Dragon Form for either quick transport from A to B or just as a last resort...
In my current campaign, the DM has the story split into different groups of player characters, and different points in time, plus, one set of characters had the ability to 'Ascend' from lower level, to one that is 5 levels higher, we could do this a set number of times per day and usually it was reserved for combat.. a game where all the character's had alternate forms is quite feasible, and I can attest from experience, it is a lot of fun.
Lucky you ;] BTW. I was wondering if you ever took part in a game in which someone was a Mind flayer that maintained his memories from his previous life and was working towards the destruction of the Illihnids?
Young steel dragon disguised as a steel draconic bloodline sorcerer, elf human or dragonborn( would really screw with people) considering higher level draconic bloodlines actually let you take a dragon form) going on adventures to build the horde or gain exp knowledge even their own keep.
The first time I ran across a "Steel Dragon" was in one of the Greyhawk Monster Manuals from 2nd edetion. It was reprinted in the Dragonomicon as Steel dragon later that year for Forgotten Realms. Usually you give appearance Lore too.
I suggest you pick up Dragons of Faerun, it is one of the better campaign source books, pretty much a who's who of the true dragons in Faerun and a if you are planning a game featuring the Cult of the Dragon, say, to carry on from the Horde of the Dragon Queen, etc.. I would call it a must have for the library.
I'll def have to check it out then. I remember seeing it come long ago but was never one I picked up. Is it just history and lore and do they have stats that carry over to 5E?
its a lot of names, places and politics, some adventures, a few new critters, the three new True Dragons, new dragon magic, new draconic magic items and it is all 3.5 edition, so, not terribly difficult to convert, just apply challenge rating to the critters and that takes care of Hit Points, Armor Class, Attack Bonus and Damage, the rest is mostly the same, just apply a bit of common sense.
I just made a PC from the Nobel houses of Waterdeeep. I was looking for a "family secret" and this would prolly be doable. That way it's kind of involved, yet still under DAM control.

Been loving the channel and getting a lot of great inspiration from your videos. Wanted to let you know I'm now running a campaign that's heavily inspired by this video in particular. The party I'm running for is contracted out by the Seven Swords company to the young dragon daughter of Jelanvaloss, who is acting as a spoiled rich noblewoman. They are attempting to secure and develop the land surrounding Nelbalneth's lair, that is currently swelling with orcs and goblinoids now that his corruption has been lifted. Entire endeavour is being bankrolled by her inheritance of his hoard. End game is ramping up to a splinter faction of the dragon cult turing the Orc hoards against each other and using their life force to return Nelbalneth as a Draco-lich. Been dropping a lot of hints their benefactor is more than she seems and they are starting to acquire the tools to work it out. It's been a ton of fun to RP and can't wait to see how it works out. Thanks again for all the great content and inspiration! Looking forward to Ebberon and Spelljammer in 5E.
Damn, I haven't seen one of these in 5e, something tells me I probably won't see for awhile. These vids are hella interesting though, keep up the good work!
I just wanna say that I love your videos! I’m a player who's been playing/listening to d&d her whole life and is now attempting dming for the first time, your videos are so inspiring and quite fun! Thank you so much for making them! Please keep it up! (and is totally not going to make an npc dragon now)
Well, these naming conventions are an invention of other species, dragons most likely refer to the lineage of another dragon, rather than what specific metal it looks like.. I am not a fluent draconic speaker unfortunately, so I can't claim that as a fact. Also, all but one of the breeds of Ferrous dragons are quite unpleasant, so I imagine Steel dragons would not look kindly on being lumped in with them.
I can see as an alternate version of Steel Dragons if they did have the attitude of Ferrous Dragons being similar but more devious as a Lawful Evil race, constantly at the center of a web of favors owed & promise made that they do indeed keep. After all if it becomes known that you don't repay your debts you lose out on any potential future debtors. Perhaps in the Mirror-verse they are like that. I wonder how the Dragons of the Mirror-verse would look on their counterparts as well, as in that version of the multiverse Bahamut was an Iron Dragon, & Tiamat was the rainbow Dragon according to a thread in the D&D Forums I remember. From what I recall about what the the Gods of the Mirror-verse would be like from the D&D forum, mind you this was on their website a few years back, they had some pretty good re-imaginings. Some of the others other than Bahamut & Tiamat that I remember, were Gruumsh Three Eye, who's third eye was opened in a battle with the evil god of the Elves Corellon Larethian leader of the Elvish Reich. As I recall the dour & humorless God of the Gnomes Carl Coledust if I remember correctly.
Victor Valdez Lawful Nuetral can be pretty bad too, since many of them are extremely legalistic and show no leeway or mercy. IE: "Business is business"/"the law is the law"/"You should've read the fine print."
I have thought a bit more about the "Gods Of The Mirrorverse" post I read, & while they had the evil version of Bahamut be an Iron Dragon, I really would like to see him as a unique metal like he is in this version. As the Good Bahamut is the only Platinum dragon, why not have an evil version of him be the only Uranium Dragon? An evil Dragon God that literally can cause damage via Radiation Poisoning by his mere presence.
Vaulting living many lives by io possibly reincarnated into some kind of epic dragon if they succeed able to use full strength(not abilities) in humanoid form.
Love, love, love this presentation. My favorite dragons in the Forgotten Realms. Thank you, AJ - so informative. In my campaign, Auntyrlothtor is a patron (of sorts) of my player character, Kinsman Brightblade. Cheers! (raising my tasty beverage...)
Probably one of my favorite dragons. I inserted Jalanvaloss into my homebrew campaign, and it's a ton of fun using her as a patron. Thanks for the awesome videos AJ!
my most recent character was a steel dragon wyrmling. the group ended up getting TPK'ed in the next session after she was introduced and I was devastated that I didn't even get to do any cool roleplaying with her. We decided we were going to play a different campaign after that, so the DM allowed a somewhat happy ending to the story by having her shift back, kill the sorcerer that responsible for the TPK and she just lived in town for the next few hundred years.
Just stumbled on your channel a couple weeks ago. I have to say, I love it and it’s helping me build around the campaign I’m hoping to run soon! Keep up the good work TMG!
This video + the video that Dungeon Dad made in Steel Dragons, helped me to create the guiding presence and "patron" for my party. They still don't know what he is, but they would definitely fight to the death to defend him.
best way to start a dragon as a patron. have the young party get in to real trouble against a dragon they know that cannot take . from behind the voice of that ale house mistress comes " you dare show your scales here again? did you think I was dead?" she runs forward becoming a dragon and ending this evil dragon life. now knowing her secret she offers to fund adventures for a cut and be the source of intel and current happenings.
Good evening A.J. I very much enjoyed the video on steel dragons I have a former peasant wizard archmage as well as a drow wizard arch mage, both in Waterdeep that have cultivated a very good relationship with a young adult male steel dragon called "Cobalt" who was looking for new digs and seeing as our alignments didnt grate against each other we allowed the dragon to enjoy our newly purchased and refurbished tower as a new home! The only thing I didnt like about what I'm assuming is the 5th edit. breath attack is the fact they gave the mettalics two breath attacks not one...furthermore the original breath attack reads as follows.......the Steel Dragons breath attack is a cube of toxic gas. The dragon can monitor the amount of gas released so precisely that it can make the cube as small as it wishes or as large as shown on the table below, per side of cube in my draconic friends case it's 40' per side save -2 or die instantly....thats pretty damned accurate and much less chance of collateral damage as well. I like having dragon companions 🐊 We bypassed the antidraconic mythal by getting permission from mirt the moneylender and blackstaff!
Yay, Steel Dragon video is up! Mr Picket, did you manage to see my email regarding those dragons I mentioned to you before? Edit - Also, I think that'd be totally awesome, being a player character who was secretly a dragon. That really tickles my fancy.
So a good way to fight a steel dragon would be having the ability to port in a few rust monsters that you can control or maybe like that dwarf in Salvatore's books who has that weapon with the rust monster ability would that affect the steel dragon and its human form thanks AJ your videos Rock
First off, love your videos. Best and most through explorations on the subject matter at hand. Well Done. Second, I note that you have done one on Sigil, but have you thought about doing one on the ecology of Sigil? Cranium Rats? Razor Vine? and so on? just an idea....
This is one of several videos concerning steel dragons, and unfortunately, all of them contradict each other. In one of them, the steel dragon only polymorphs into one SPECIFIC human form, living out their lives as that person until the "end" of their human lifetime, at which time they sneak away and "vault" into a new human life, repeating this cycle until their true deaths. They do not have breath weapons in that version, and they can adjust their fear aura for different effects. I guess we have to pick and choose which version we like best. I am currently using an NPC steel dragon who owns a general store.
Steel dragons are just a sub-breed of Silver dragons, so few in number that individuals get mistaken for 'types' all the time, it's a problem with Sages sometimes.
I haven't seen any lore that suggests that steel dragons are in any way related to silver dragons. For one thing, steels are neutral, not good. But I'm no expert.
Yeah, they might make a cool PC. I'll concede there. Probably wasn't towards me, but i'm in that same boat of no monster PCs. This may have developed when someone wanted to play a gold dragon without any of the downsides of being a dragon as well as random bonuses. They wanted full class levels, the ability to use not only their claws as hands but also their tail (Which they would use entirely for shields while still making claw attacks), extra starting gold, perfect and infinite perfect polymorph, an existing highly intricate lair, and a group of draconic allies.
This is my favorite dragon the other I love is bronze dragons both prefer a different form to live as. Kryinns bronze dragons take the form of animals only they don't do humanoids at all. I have been known to even make a young bronze pose as an animal compaion needless to say it was a fun revial after months of game play
it was funny I control; familiars and companions in my games so it did a lot of stuff it strictly shouldn't noticing things and finding traps. It took dragon form only when confront with another dragon
That sounds great, I think it is reasonable for DM's to have more agency over the familiar's actions, players tend to be very biased in that regard (not that I blame them)
I'm planning on a campaign with a bronze dragon posing as a hen with all funny stuff chickens do (except egg-laying or course). And the players would often smell the sea, even in different environments, just so that I can troll them.
I was thinking; "Hm. Shapeshifteers. Cool." Then my mind went: Dragon. Shapeshifter. Purple. So now I want someone to incorporate a feud between a Steel and Purple dragon into a campaign.
you could do it in a drow city, where they're both larping as prominent drow having a blood fued. involving many many underdark elves in a labyrinth of backstabbing, slaughter, hit squads, poetic posionings, intreging mystique to the point of madness, complex reality affecting grand magics(all for the sake of the fued ofcourse), people trying to "escape" the brutal gang war only to be... dragged right back in, paranoia & vindications of said paranoias. all in a good happy little drow city, where both lawfull good and chaotic evil might aswell be the samething. 😈👏😵 but they are dragons... and thus are O.P. resulting in even more collateral damage than usual. 🐉😱😰
After two extremely failed campaigns, I temporarily stepped down from DMing and will be using that as a plot hook for a future campaign. The problem is, my players never took the largest city in the main continent back the first BBEO (Big bad evil organization), which is full of racist wizards SO... YEAH. That's a problem.
3.14 Dragon That reminds me of the thalmore in the current aldmeri dominion from the elder scrolls universe, similar sittuation: after the near complete holocaust of the ayleids and snow elves on tamriel, and the seige of alinor by the successive empire of men utilizing the reality breaking numidium and the following oblivion crisis that emerged due the empires incompetence that resulted in the collapse of the crystal tower in the summerset isles, but not before mehrunes dagon's dremora were unleashed upon and in full view of the altmeri people, in their hedonistic excesses. it's not to hard to see why, when you account for the long view of high elves, why they are pretty much nazi's now. they're not all zealous 4th era high ranking justicars who are willing to slaughter all who oppose them in their plan to unmake the world, achieve apotheosis to become litteral gods as they simultaneously unbind their own deities from the prime material plane and destroy every other mortal race in the process. but they definitely do strongly sympathize given lorkhans trickery and the omni metaphorical "slow death" they've all been riddle with in place of an existence as deities where thought was manifest as easily as the immortal daedra they now envy and abhor. sure race of evil wizards, but they have a motive beyond irrational bigotry, to reset the whole board back to zero. from their perspective both litterally and morally they are the "good guys".
My BBEO isn't in control of the world, the players just decided too not finish them off. They currently control in total: The largest city in the continent (Named Utmno) and some land around them. They are bordered by: A dwarven country, which is currently the #1 on that continent. The Elves went through a civil war, and the halfling nation were basically reduced to a small tribal society. (That nation of halflings are closer to Dark Sun halfings then anything else. They are ALSO racist, just slightly less murderous.) They're pretty harmless. They can't do any more damage because... well, because they already culled/deported all of their enemies in the city, and they can't expand. I liked that BBEO, so i'm not too upset, it just makes my job harder, because now I have too use more densely populated/thematic continents and/or random islands.
I am so imagining Jarlaxle flirting with that Waterdeep dragon, fulling knowing what she is but pretending he doesn't. Yep, that's his jam. We know he has interests in the city. Willing to bet their paths have crossed.
Where can I see the references to what was said in the video? I love these videos and I like researching deeper into certain monsters - dragons - ideas. Thanks for uploading.
On that last bit, I do think a young and inexperienced dragon of one of the more shape-shifting types would make great player characters. Even a slightly older dragon who holds back their full strength to preserve their cover would probably be good, especially if they join a team that is a few levels in.
I only just found this video, so I know it's late; these Dragons have been a favorite of mine for many, many years, and love it. I will say, though, that it's comprehensive, but is still missing information from other official books. For example, they are incredibly curious creatures, which ironically fits their feline-esque true form, and that they sometimes form conclaves and secretive groups with other Steel dragons, just to share information.
Also called Greyhawk Dragons ...... #riftsmichigan I converted rifts in 3.5 edition as a young man and inserted it in my campaign that basically became spelljammer,
3:58 This looks like that town square in the Dungeons and dragons cartoon S01E03 Hall of Bones where Eric the Cavalier has a BIG fail telling jokes to earn the Young Ones money. th-cam.com/video/jA-Lt5hJmnU/w-d-xo.html at 6:24
Hey AJ I am currently making a DnD campaign where I have a party join a "Great White Hunter" of sorts in the hunt for an Abdominal Yeti and other Yeti. It would be amazing if you made a video over Yeti.
@@AJPickett I like that idea. I would change the wind of cold to a poisonous wind for actions. As for regional effects I think switching the ability to make cloud constructs into an effect that magically preserves any book, tapestry, scroll, etc. that holds information on history, culture, or legend within 1 mile.
Ever considered doing an Ecology video on the Yyrthak or other similarly unique wyvern-esque creatures? I feel like theres....faar to many dragons, so it might make a decent break from form while sticking to the theme.
Well, it's green, has scales and wings. Sure, I have added it to the list for a quick vid, seems like a likely encounter in the jungle volcano range of Chult.
Steel Dragons: The most underestimated dragons ever. In my campaigns, no player ever discovered or even suspected a dragon was involved in a position of power. The Steel Half-Dragon prince was even a clue that was ignored when the king gave a public proclamation about forgiveness. I had genius level players, so don't judge them. There was a LOT of intrigue on their plates. They did figure out that the half-dragon was authentic and ceased their support of the rebels financed by the amathyst dragon.
yes this would be a gem to play as, abit OP but hey... "fun" over eyetwitches and you could always spice up encounters and sittuations to even things out. but as for killing one of them... you could have a city go from prosperity and worshiping it as a known deity(in its rarely seen dragonic form. only to witness it be slain as a paragon of the city) to the whole city just falling apart in a mass psychotically depressed state, from suicide and cannibal cults, to mindlessly chaotic violent riots... and crimal gangs poping up out of nowhere, to the point where the whole environment starts as this chipper, up beat and affluent place where the party can relax, take it easy, see the sights... with bird song...🐤⛅ pre slaying to a post slaying equilivalent of a brutal dungeon crawl, where humans "are" the monsters and being a murder hobo is the only way to make it too the city gates as every good deed is brutally punnished, all to the sounds of muderous death screams and cries of disfiguring agony.... 😱🗡 hell you could even stretch it out with a quest to ressurect the previously slain dragon as the only way to "save the city", which would require going back into "the city" to get to the corpse to resurect it. 😉😈
are steel dragons territorial over there humanoid filled dwellings or could you get a group of them sharring a city/town/citadel ect, ect... forming a kind of secret society of egomanical benevolent peers, kind of like a reverse illuminati of badasses... who punnish perticularly percistant miscreants with acid immersion... okay my imagination is going. thanx for the two vids in quick succession.
AJ Pickett with a perticular obcession with eating the feet of the tall... 😵 i absolutely ❤ it. yeah but i was thinking, in the opposite to red dragons where it's all rivalry and intollerant bravado so they are most working against each other, in constant competition. with steel dragons because they eat so little aswell, couldn't they potentially work with each other, like buffing and supporting everything that each of them is doing in a city. rather than that side ways conversation across a street of two hopeless fashion victims, you'd have them finnishing off each others sentances often ending in: "nothing shall stand in the way of our power..." kind of like a cabal of telepathic mages with a demi hive mind, but there all egomaniacal dragons larping as high society.
I have an entire nation of hangry hobbits in my world. Worshipping a former PC, they were created due to the players failing to stop a violently racist cult of wizards worshipping Vecna from taking over a sizeable portion of the continent. After the PCs shrunk that nation down (But failed to destroy) that nation, the Halflings just kind of stayed around. They're actually worshipping a former PC. I just felt like talking about that. One of the more original pieces of my lore.
Their breath weapons seem a little counter intuitive. You would think they would want something with very little collateral damage, not that they have a choice in the matter.
I have not played DnD yet but I really want to and given the opportunity I would love to be able to play a young dragon, probably a Bronze or Silver although I'm also interested in these more uncommon dragons
You've got to start going over these names before you record... it kills the experience anytime, which is multiple times in each video, you stumble over names.
Thanks for the critique, by the way, while I have you here, how do you pronounce Ixitxachitls (these are the deep water intelligent Rays) would that be the south american phonetics?
I think the explanation was that the city has grown since it was cast. So some dragons can live in the outer districts of the city. At least one was also give some specific exception by Khelbin (sp?) Blackstaff
I once won a bet with a DM he said that there was no way that at the any D&D character would even survive 1 game of refs I proved him wrong I got him to agree to let me make an epic level character I sacrificed five levels making my character 25th level and a hybrid monster half gold dragon half celestial which in Third Edition makes you pretty much immune to everything back that up with combat and psionics and natural arcane and divine Magic and you are unstoppable granted I still had to be very careful
Waterdeep has dragons?! Doesn't it have the dragonward mythal that keeps them out? Huh, looking at the lore, whoever has the dragonstaff can allow in whatever dragons they choose, so I guess that explains it. Very unexpected!
Gotta admit, this sort of thing I why I never got into Forgotten Realms as a setting. The steel dragon concept is cool, I like the idea of a specifically urban dragon, fascinated by the short, but vibrant lives of the lesser races. It reminds me of Celedyr from Shadowrun. The problem with Forgotten Realms is, the NPCs are all infinitely more powerful and interesting than your character can ever be! I get it, it was Ed Greenwood's personal campaign, and after Gygax split from the company, it became the default setting for D&D, and Greenwood and Co. wanted their personal characters to go on forever, but... Elminster never friggen' goes away! Even his lowest disciples and cronies are more interesting than the players can ever be! No matter how mighty and heroic your deeds may be, they will always be overshadowed by the fact that Elminster could've have done it by himself, with little-to-no effort! It takes the shine off everything the players can ever do! At least with Gygax's five wizards, they all existed long ago, then wandered off to other planes of existence, and practically never get involved with things anymore. Campaigns need to be first, last, and always, about the adventures of the PLAYER characters. Sorry, it will always be more fun and exciting to play the parts of Gandalf, Aragorn, or Frodo, than it will ever be to role-play Bill the Pony.
Excellent work as always! I have a player in HotDQ, tiefling divine soul sorcerer, and I’m thinking that the father/progenitor was a steel dragon that was involved with Tiamat somehow. Like he spent too long in Avernus fighting tiamats forces at every turn and he became tainted. Do you have any suggestions or insight? And I don’t mean to be rude if you offer a professional service for this type of thing or if it’s reserved for patreon. Or if this is not the preferred method of interaction (comments on TH-cam).
I've always wondered...if dragons can't enter the city aside from a brief moment of gaining permission and then touching some staff (iirc) basically implying that they'd have to resort to some Bram Stoker entry methods before stealing a poke at the stick...and considering the apparent disproportionate number of steel dragons hiding in plain sight....how do we square this circle?
Are there any tiny dragons in D&D? Ones that people could have as a pet or maybe lives in burrows? I watched this right after watching a video on burrowing owls and my mind melded the two XD.
Oh you mean Greyhawk Dragon, for a second there I thought you were saying that this was a Faerun thing...but all things faerun are rewrites of Greyhawk material in order to not pay the original writers for all there years of genius, riiiight? Faerun is a DnD world for 12 year olds.
I can't see a game setting where letting a PC be a Dragon would be a good idea. Maybe some super high level game and a really good write up could justify it to some. But as Iv run pen and paper RPGs Iv found it's best to not pull moves like that unless all the players are in the loop and like the idea.
I'm just sitting here wondering how a dragonborn PC and a kobold PC will react to a PC that suddenly becomes a steel dragon unsure about their true identity after years of amnesia stuck in human form. Might be interesting to see how a party of five reacts when two are dragon biased and the others angered/terrified of their ally who they spent their journey with.
The Dragonborn (depending on which lore you go with) either praises them or spits upon them and the kobold most likely to suddenly be friendlier to the steel dragon and asks if he needs anything done and worship the ground he walks. While the elf and dwarf who's villages and forges were raided by dragons give the player the stink eye. Meanwhile this poor sod is just in shock of his true nature and is not coping very well with a happy/angry Dragonborn, a clingy kobold, an elf pissed her village was burned by a red dragon, and a dwarf who's storehouse of materials were "procured" by a gold dragon all giving him an array of unneeded attention to that detail about themselves. That poor amnesiac steel dragon will definitely need a therapist...
The ultimate punishment for being a murder hobo. "Oh you thought I was a little old lady? SUPRISE"
XD
Yog Sothoth then it kills and loots you... then goes on an adventure. 😵
You'd think in that world there would be less crime in general with the knowledge there are dragons that like to be regular people, haha
Well magic is the ultimate conceal carry, as long as someone has their hands and voice they can burn people alive.

Włodzimierz Szyc no, but the Adversary is coming, the only salvation lies in Thoon!
:D
Young steel dragon disguised as a steel draconic bloodline sorcerer, elf human or dragonborn( would really screw with people) considering higher level draconic bloodlines actually let you take a dragon form) going on adventures to build the horde or gain exp knowledge even their own keep.
The first time I ran across a "Steel Dragon" was in one of the Greyhawk Monster Manuals from 2nd edetion. It was reprinted in the Dragonomicon as Steel dragon later that year for Forgotten Realms. Usually you give appearance Lore too.
Awesome. I've only encountered one of these in the 20 something years I've been playing
Hey you never know, maybe you encountered them and didn't realize it ;)
too true lol. Great wealth of knowledge you are Sir! I had no idea they were so behind the scenes. Another fantastic learning experience.
Thank you for doing a video on my favourite dragon! All your videos are awesome!
Thanks Shane!

Will do!
I just wanna say that I love your videos! I’m a player who's been playing/listening to d&d her whole life and is now attempting dming for the first time, your videos are so inspiring and quite fun! Thank you so much for making them! Please keep it up!
(and is totally not going to make an npc dragon now)
Thank you :) So glad you are taking your rightful place in the Chair of Power at long last.
It is odd that they are not Ferrous Dragons. Because Steel is an iron alloy.
Mirror Universe D&D is now a thing in my mind and I don't want it to go away.
Vaulting living many lives

possibly reincarnated into some kind of epic dragon if they succeed
able to use full strength(not abilities) in humanoid form.
Steel dragons are basically magical reverse-scalies.
Got to hear your take on these!!!
Probably one of my favorite dragons. I inserted Jalanvaloss into my homebrew campaign, and it's a ton of fun using her as a patron. Thanks for the awesome videos AJ!
Definitely one of my favorites.
my most recent character was a steel dragon wyrmling. the group ended up getting TPK'ed in the next session after she was introduced and I was devastated that I didn't even get to do any cool roleplaying with her. We decided we were going to play a different campaign after that, so the DM allowed a somewhat happy ending to the story by having her shift back, kill the sorcerer that responsible for the TPK and she just lived in town for the next few hundred years.
Thanks for the info. I love these kind of videos.
Just stumbled on your channel a couple weeks ago. I have to say, I love it and it’s helping me build around the campaign I’m hoping to run soon! Keep up the good work TMG!
You sir are amazing thank you for all the vids you do
Thank you for watching, thank you even more for the kind comment :;)
Such a fun concept for a npc even if the pc never finds out lol
This video + the video that Dungeon Dad made in Steel Dragons, helped me to create the guiding presence and "patron" for my party. They still don't know what he is, but they would definitely fight to the death to defend him.
can't believe they got retconned
I just discovered your channel and I've really been enjoying these ecology/monster videos.
best way to start a dragon as a patron. have the young party get in to real trouble against a dragon they know that cannot take . from behind the voice of that ale house mistress comes " you dare show your scales here again? did you think I was dead?" she runs forward becoming a dragon and ending this evil dragon life. now knowing her secret she offers to fund adventures for a cut and be the source of intel and current happenings.
You have done it again AJ. Another amazing video. You are hands down my favorite TH-camr. 10/10 As always my friend. :)
I like having dragon companions 🐊 We bypassed the antidraconic mythal by getting permission from mirt the moneylender and blackstaff!
hey dude i've never played dnd. your vids are awesome i enjoy the hell outta of them. Really get the gears turning. thank you.
My favorite dragon yet, #2 being astral, and being 3 void. Good job!
dragons is one of my favourite topics to learn! Thank you
Yay, Steel Dragon video is up!
Mr Picket, did you manage to see my email regarding those dragons I mentioned to you before?
Edit - Also, I think that'd be totally awesome, being a player character who was secretly a dragon. That really tickles my fancy.
Yes, had a brief skin read, will take a better look at it this evening.
Awesome, looking forward to what you think of it.
So a good way to fight a steel dragon would be having the ability to port in a few rust monsters that you can control or maybe like that dwarf in Salvatore's books who has that weapon with the rust monster ability would that affect the steel dragon and its human form thanks AJ your videos Rock
Steel dragons are not made out of actual steel.
@@AJPickett doubt
and another great video, love your content.
i love your videos, man! keep up the good work!
I remember when the Steel dragons came out in Dragon Magazine. Always wanted to use one, but never got around to putting them into the game world
First off, love your videos.
"Hey, my squirrel can talk!" *FOOM!* "And it can turn into a dragon! GOOD SQUIRREL!" *gives dragon an acorn*
it was funny I control; familiars and companions in my games so it did a lot of stuff it strictly shouldn't noticing things and finding traps.
Cool."
Then my mind went: Dragon.
They are ALSO racist, just slightly less murderous.)
They're pretty harmless. They can't do any more damage because... well, because they already culled/deported all of their enemies in the city, and they can't expand.
I liked that BBEO, so i'm not too upset, it just makes my job harder, because now I have too use more densely populated/thematic continents and/or random islands.
Great information. I am already planning way to plant a steel Dragon into my next campaign.
I'm gonna have a steel dragon play a beggar for it's final life cycle and see if my players will help him
I am so imagining Jarlaxle flirting with that Waterdeep dragon, fulling knowing what she is but pretending he doesn't. Yep, that's his jam. We know he has interests in the city. Willing to bet their paths have crossed.
Where can I see the references to what was said in the video? I love these videos and I like researching deeper into certain monsters - dragons - ideas.
Thanks for uploading.
This is one of the very few non-original dragons that I enjoy. I like it's urban nature. Big residents of Greyhawk City too, if I'm not mistaken.
They are seriously my favorite dragons :)
Just got my notification for this video:)
I have so many ideas now I think my brain is going to burst.
I bet they’ll annoy the heck out of the evil king in the inheritance cycle
definitely going to try to put this in a game
When are we going to get back to Magebane monsters?
3.14 Dragon for any suggestions?
Also called Greyhawk Dragons ...... #riftsmichigan I converted rifts in 3.5 edition as a young man and inserted it in my campaign that basically became spelljammer,
3:58 This looks like that town square in the Dungeons and dragons cartoon S01E03 Hall of Bones where Eric the Cavalier has a BIG fail telling jokes to earn the Young Ones money.

Man steels do seem like they were made to be a PC or at the very least a party member
or patron.
Hey AJ I am currently making a DnD campaign where I have a party join a "Great White Hunter" of sorts in the hunt for an Abdominal Yeti and other Yeti. It would be amazing if you made a video over Yeti.
What kinds of regional effects or lair actions do you think these dragons would have, if any?
I imagine they are similar to that of a silver dragon.
Yeah Sarah like Dragonborn or half dragon be like that
yes this would be a gem to play as, abit OP but hey...
The Dark master they do share particularly large cities, also.. Halfling cannibal cults, has to be the hungry hungry hobbits.
@@AJPickett I would go with East Cardiff phonics 😁
Sounds like a decent urban counterpart to song dragons
Well, they mostly dwell around the Moonshae isles, but yeah, kind of like hippy steel dragons.
How do they live in Waterdeep with Ahghairon's Dragonward?
I think the explanation was that the city has grown since it was cast. So some dragons can live in the outer districts of the city. At least one was also give some specific exception by Khelbin (sp?) Blackstaff
Correct
AJ I think what you are suggesting is that this would be the perfect campaign mysterious benefactor for whom the PCs often work, no?
Scott Po yep, right on the money. These dragons are designed to fit that role.
2:22 - Jarlaxle, Artemis and Wulfgar? Probably not... that Hammer is tiny, and the Drow is carrying a scepter/mace... and the dagger has no emerald...
Thanks for the vid sir.
So.. about those Pearl Dragons...😉
Are you going to do any of the Tome of beasts dragons?
Yes, eventually I will create a draconic playlist as well, to better organize them.
Faerie Dragons. They're the size of a cat.
Rifts ruled
04:10. You think she'd be willing to use some of her hoard to found a bank...because moar money?
Oh you mean Greyhawk Dragon, for a second there I thought you were saying that this was a Faerun thing...but all things faerun are rewrites of Greyhawk material in order to not pay the original writers for all there years of genius, riiiight? Faerun is a DnD world for 12 year olds.
What d&d resource book would this steel dragons be in
2:52 Dragons of Faerun
I can't see a game setting where letting a PC be a Dragon would be a good idea. Maybe some super high level game and a really good write up could justify it to some. But as Iv run pen and paper RPGs Iv found it's best to not pull moves like that unless all the players are in the loop and like the idea.
Clearly you have never played Rifts.
Oooo Rifts I remember hearing about Rifts. Super over the top high level game is what I seem to remember being told.
I know exactly where to put this... Thanks
Could you perhaps outline the stat block for playing such a dragon as a pc race, or do you know if one exists?
Do you know a group that will play over long distances. Such as with discord or Skype?
Would steel and silver dragons get along.
yep
AJ Pickett but would the Steel ever reveal to the Silver that it’s actually a dragon?
sweet
and now i have the guild master
Exactly.
Are there any monsters or baddies that dragons fear? Or they would be powerless against?
They are always very wary of Behir.
@@AJPickett ty sir!! I've got much research to do!
I have a really hard time liking these dragons. So much about them just oozes this cringey "MY FIRST OC DO NOT STEAL".
