      You just described 90% of the denizens of the lower planes. Everything there wants to eat you or avoid being eaten by you. And the former greatly outnumber the latter.
      Stick to the upper planes. There are far less things that want to eat you there. I didn’t say there were none though.

    This is an incredibly rich and immersive story! I love how Meluron’s research weaves together ancient lore, personal memories, and hidden histories of the Batrachi and their descendants. The connection between the tako people, doppelgangers, and the Iqua Tel'Quessir adds so much depth to the world. The twist with Jaster was chilling yet brilliant, and the encounter with the blue ring octopus sharing ancestral stories was both eerie and captivating. This narrative beautifully blends myth, mystery, and emotion-truly fantastic work!

    Love the logistics of primordial sea creatures. I was talking to a friend about it the other day, how octopi are some of the oldest creatures on earth & have endured multiple mass extinctions. People say that if they simply passed on their knowledge to their offspring, they could develop true civilization.
    In response, I postulated that, perhaps long ago, they did just that. But as conditions changed & the knowledge they passed on became irrelevant & redundant, they learned that in order for new generations to adapt & survive, they should actually be free of the biased knowledge & change-resistant instructions of their forebearers. Perhaps the squid & octopi that we know of are simply "outcasts" or "escapees", coming up from the deepest depths of the earth, under the ocean... where ancient, unknown cephalopods still exist that uphold a bizarre & twisted version of "the first civilization"

    I have a question, when did the Silthilar inhabit Toral? I can only find one mention of the race in the 3.5 book Lords of madness. It mentions they are an ancient race, without setting them apart as a creator race. It also talks about thousands if not millions of years having gone by after the race lost to their corporeal form. I assume that would put them somewhere either before the batrachi, or between the rule of the Sarruk and the bettaychi.

    one thing I don't get about creatures like doppelgangers and changelings is why you never see one who chooses to live honestly and openly as what they are instead of trying to replace someone, even if only so they don't have to constantly live in fear of being outed and killed. I mean just think of how fantastic and famous a professional actor they'd make!

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Because they get murdered by the other shapeshifters, that's why. You don't want to get involved when they are going after each other.

      @@AJPickett I think you're just describing a racial gang war, which is something that happens in the real world too. I don't know if there's standard procedure for dealing with that as an innocent but I imagine you could just pack up and move to a different town relatively easily.

    • @almitrahopkins1873
      @almitrahopkins1873 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@benthomason3307 That’s the changeling race in Eberron. They’re doppelgänger hybrids. They are a riot to play.
      I can remember playing a changeling artificer/rogue years ago that had a vast collection of identities he(?) used over the course of our adventuring. Between Dox’s natural ability, skill and magic items crafted specifically to augment it, Dox had a Disguise skill roll of +30. Even Dox’s toolbox got in on the act, appearing to shift and change to fit whatever identity its master was using, often appearing as a finely-crafted teak tool chest with a dozen legs walking along as Dox sat on top of it. I played that character for close to six months before the other players figured out I was playing a changeling, not a goblin, because I kept that as a secret from them. They thought I was just a locksmith from Darguun until I trusted them.
      I bet if you used Artificer/bard instead, you could make the greatest actor that ever lived in a campaign world. You would just have to be careful not to expose other doppelgängers in doing it, because they aren’t friendly.

    • @MythologicalStories-q1z
      @MythologicalStories-q1z 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's a really interesting point! It would be fascinating to explore a doppelgänger or changeling who embraces their true identity instead of hiding. Their natural ability to shift forms could make them incredible actors or performers, turning what’s often seen as a curse into a unique talent. It could also open up complex stories about acceptance, trust, and how society reacts to the unknown. Definitely a concept worth exploring in fiction!

    This story just reinforces my belief about Slaadi. How do they differ from demons? They might be Chaotic Neutral, but no story I've ever seen shows them to act in any way except evil.

    • @almitrahopkins1873
      @almitrahopkins1873 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      What is evil to the fly is just lunch to the spider. It’s your perspective that makes it good or evil, not any inherent benevolence or malevolence. The Slaad lords just are.
      This one destroys because only after destruction does change occur. Rebirth, regrowth and rebuilding require death and destruction. That is the nature of chaos, constant change. The Slaad lords are fixed points around which chaos thrives, at least for a time. They are like the grass that grows in the cracks of the cement, not even aware that it will utterly destroy the pavement.
      Chaotic Neutral higher powers are the hardest to wrap your brain around. Good or Evil are simple by comparison. They are Neutral, so they don’t act out of a good or evil intention. Chaos only exists because Law exists. Law only exists because Chaos exists. They act as a counterbalance to each other. The spawning stone that creates the Slaad is a fixed point of Law in the planes of Chaos. The great Modron March is the search for the seed of Chaos that moves around in the planes of Law. If you can understand the Yin & Yang, the Slaadi lords make perfect sense.

    • @briancorvello3620
      @briancorvello3620 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      And for that matter, HOW can Slaadi truly be embodiments of Chaos when they only have six sub-races, all of which look like giant frogs? Even the Modrons have more body variations than Slaadi do!
      Some believe Slaadi (and especially Slaad Lords) are more a result of Chaos corrupted by Evil rather than pure Chaos.

    • @almitrahopkins1873
      @almitrahopkins1873 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @briancorvello3620 They're Law corrupting Chaos, not evil. Good and Evil are later developments.

    • @rainbowmothraleo
      @rainbowmothraleo 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@briancorvello3620 according to the Tales from the Infinite Staircase, slaadi are supposed to be weird and varied, but slaadi lords altered the Spawning Stone to better control them. If a slaad infects another slaad, there's a chance for the true slaad to be born

    • @rainbowmothraleo

    Stupid pun creatures to throw at your players:
    Magical plant ogres: give it an attack, that can blind an opponent and/or make them choke/cough/sneeze (maybe a modified hideous laughter spell) - tell them it's a Pepper Oni! Could also potentially work with an Onigiri.
    Have someone, maybe a summoner type, be protected by a pumpkin plant creature - tell them it's a bodygourd!
    If you have a german player/group, you can put a scared fig plant creature in front of them - tell them it's a "Feigling" (german word for coward, but here a dumb wordplay meaning a fig creature).
    Just had an idea! Not really a creature, but regarding one:
    If one of your Players plays a Minotaur (or you could give another clever setup, where they're for example chased by one), simply tell them, that they can't enter a room/area. All the others can enter and leave just fine, only the minotaur can't, as if they're blocked by an invisible forcefield. When they investigate, tell them, that they discover there being a spell placed there, that denys all bovine creatures from passing through. If they don't catch on, let them discuss things back and forth for a bit, or something like that, and try to explain/word it in different ways for a while, but not outright saying it, before nonchalantly telling them in an explanatory way that "Guys, you can't pass, it's a cow ward".
    If you use one of these, or have other groan worthy ideas, please share.

    The empires fall and new empires rise. Now is the age of man... but who will the chained god rise up in their place?
    His chains will break, 333 crystals anchor his chains.
    Tharizdun is his true name... these lesser beings are his chosen.
    The chaos will cover the land once more
    Hail Tharizdun!
    Hail the chained change!

      That’s where it gets really fuzzy. The Slaad lords are Slaad, but they live outside of time, like gods. That means that they were born from the stone, but they also influence the stone. They are a paradox that can only exist within raw chaos. They could destroy themselves, but they would never exist to destroy themselves if they did. The Slaad lords are the chicken and the egg at the same time. They come from the stone, but they influence the stone.

      TH-cam premium. Not only do you get 0 ads, you also know you're supporting ALL your fav youtube creators!
      I just got a coupon for being a premium member of $100 off the Pixel 9 and that stacks with other offers so I got $250 off my new phone!
