On our honeymoon I took my wife to the Ritz Carlton Maui for 10 days then to the Marriott Kawaii Beach Resort for another 10 days. Definitely make it a bucket list item. Got to swim with the turtles, took the road to Hana. The Hawaiian grand canyon. Blue hawaiian hellicopter tour. Awesome memories.

I really appreciate your comments about the rental unit. We just bought a rental condo on the West side of Maui; we have been coming to Maui since, well I came the first time in 1976.....so it's been a couple of years. We have already decided our condo will have nice beach chairs and umbrella for guests along with boogie boards cooler and probably a cart to help haul stuff to the beach. I would leave snorkel gear, but that's kind of weird, so guests will have to rent their own. Also the comment about beach towels is spot on. Minimum of 4 beach towels for two guests. Don't get me started on the "starter supplies" most people provide, we will have a couple of weeks worth of TP and paper towels, the last thing I want someone to have to do is purchase basic supplies while they are my guest. Ukulele, and probably a beach guitar is a must (mostly for me, but guests will be welcome to use the gear). Decent binoculars are a necessity for whale watching from our Lanai. Our place needs some work, but we hope that people will feel at home in our home away from home. We want it to reflect our love for the island and hopefully be part of someone's memory in what may be a once in a lifetime vacation for them. There are plenty of Condo's like our little place that was built to be a vacation unit to rent without renting an actual dwelling that the local families desperately need for housing, so choose wisely.

Great video of my new everyday workday! I know I am very lucky to work up there. As for clothing, layers is good, always a hat. Inevitably, it does depend where you are from as to how the cold affects you…I’m from the UK, so Haleakala is simply a ‘walk in the park’ 😂😂😂Whereas if you’re from warmer climes, you will really feel it, especially if it’s cloudy and windy. Conversely, you can also get sunburnt up there! Enjoy.

You asked about “capturing the culture” and how to do that well, I’ve been watching the TH-cam channel, Expedition Drenched, since they started last year. It’s a little more interview style but I think they do it very well. Might check them out. And for Mantas... 🥰🤩🥳 at the end of this month (April) I’ll be heading to the Socorro islands and will be on Nautilus Liveaboards where I’m sure we’ll see them amongst other large ocean creatures. I’ll let you know how it goes!! 🤞🤞🤞

I didn't eat fish or drink pineapple juice for a LONG time after coming back from Hawaii. It's just so fresh there and delicious that it made what was on the mainland taste so subpar by comparison. I enjoy them again now, but man, that goodness stays with you a long time. It's just the best there is. When you have Mahi Mahi caught fresh that same day, or pineapple juice just made, you can just tell the difference.

Just stubbled across your video and found it fascinating. My wife, adult daughter, and I were in Maui early to mid-December 2021. Due to some poor weather the first week we were there we didnvisit Mt Haleakala or the IAO Valley but did do a whale watching trip, which was a little early in the season. While not much action we did see a mother whale with calf and male escort whale for a bit while out on a zodiac type of boat. A word to the wise, if you get seasick easily take some anti seasickness meds before heading out or consider a larger ship for viewing. Since we were staying in Kihei we did eat at the Paia Fish Market mentioned in your video. It was our favorite place to eat at. Besides hitting three different beaches we drove around most of the island with the road to Hana being my favorite part of our trip. I plan on viewing your video on it to see how our experiences compare. Thanks for sharing your not-so-great experiences as well. Always helpful to know what to avoid.

Reef mantas are a common sight but you’ll see them only one out of ten dives. Per your comment they are wild animals and they will show up when they want to. If you want to increase the odds go out for a manta swim on the big island. There’s a 90% chance you’ll see a manta.

Sorry about your “Manta Ray“ trip. I have dived Maui a few times and never saw them there. The only place I ever saw them was on a night dive in Kona. You may see an occasional one during the day, however a night dive is where you will see the biggest group of them. It is for sure a bucket list thing for you to do. We used Jack’s Diving Locker in Kona if you make it to that island.

I'm part of a local dive group called Maui Mantas- and we definitely see mantas as well as spotted eagle rays- even when snorkeling. As always, it's hit or miss, but so awesome every time it happens. Also, close encounter with a monk seal was quite a memorable dive!

You two have some of the best travel videos I have ever seen. They are consistently informative, but also always fun. I enjoy the fact that your passion for travel mirrors our own. It makes my wife and me want to travel even more. This year alone, we have been to Oahu (20 days) and Pensacola (15 days). We are planning a short trip to Dallas and Houston, as well as a long stop in Molokai. Please keep posting these delightful travel videos.

For everyone asking about rental cars and ubers, there's a shortage of transportation options on Maui right now. Tourist levels are back to pre-pandemic mass tourism numbers but Hawaii is still following all covid safety regulations. Long wait times at restaurants because capacity is limited to 30-50% depending on venue. Masks are required in public (yes even outside) unless you are 6 feet from others at all times. Rental car companies reduced inventory last year due to covid now they can't keep up with the current surge in demand. (There were far too many rental cars on this small island before coviid, hopefully we don't get them all back.) If you vacation here this year, please respect Hawaii's covid safety regulations. Also, please get vaccinated before your trip. Hotel, restaurant, rental car, etc. workers come in contact with hundreds of visitors per day. Enjoy your vacation but wear a mask and follow the rules.

Did you learn about the silver swords? They are some of the coolest plants on the planet. I believe that they only bloom once every 50 years? I'd have to look it up again but I do know that Haleakala is the only place on earth that they grow. So cool!

Maui, known also as “The Valley Isle,” is the second largest Hawaiian island. The island beloved for its world-famous beaches, the sacred Iao Valley, views of migrating humpback whales (during winter months), farm-to-table cuisine and the magnificent sunrise and sunset from Haleakala.

Please be respectful of the Aina. Especially during covid. Too many times have we had well-intentioned visitors end up hurting our local areas. Just any fyi, if something is closed, or you see the word "Kapu" in front of something that you want to explore, please do not go further. There are dozens of places that my friends and I used to go that are no longer accessable due to overuse by naive tourists. Rule of thumb: If you wouldn't do it in your hometown, please don't do it in ours. This includes wearing Speedos in Walmart with nothing else but a tank top and weird birkenstocks. No one wants to see that.

I love the instances when you guys visit places that I've been because it's so neat to see "alternate" expereinces of places I have also experienced IRL.... if that makes any kind of sense lol
When I went to the top of Haleakala I was NOT prepared for the cold haha I wore sandals, capris and a flannel over a tshirt haha but I missed sunrise despite my best attemps (even with my best intentions I will probably always be a night owl lol) so I went up the mountain at like 8am still cold but with the sun it was def not as cold. BUT I did catch the Ranger Talk which was awesome. Didn't even know about the audio tour thing! That's so cool!
Asking people for persmission to film them is so hard for me -and that's just inside the US. I can't imagine how much harder it would be in other places. If I already feel comfortable with a person then I'll just say oh are you comfortable being on camera before I start filming, but I'm still working on trying to ask that of people I just met lol

Been on 3 separate 7-10 day trips on Maui, Kauai, and Big Island. From what I understand (and you may very well know this by now), the best place in Hawaii to swim with mantas is on the west coast of the Big Island...specifically Kailua-Kona. I think they are more active at night, so they do night tours (with lighting). We didn't do it while we were there a few years back, but it's on our return list. Maui was great, but personally I preferred Big Island overall for it's diversity (all the islands are diverse, but Big Island has the added allure of active volcanoes). The biggest Big Island drawback are the vast distances (although that dilutes the crowds), and the relatively small number of beaches.

Sorry you missed the Mantas. I've been on many dives with "That" dive shop and had great experience with them at many different dive locations around Maui. I've been on the Manta dive twice and seen Mantas both times. Diving in the ocean is very unpredictable and you never know what luck you'll have, or not... Great videos BTW!
