  • Why is the mantra secret in Transcendental meditation?
Check out my video on my initiation process to TM:
    • Transcendental Meditat...
In today’s video, we are going to talk about what the mantra is in Transcendental meditation, and why it is better to keep it secret.
Transcendental meditation was brought to the west in the 1950s by Maharishi and the practice became very popular after a number of celebrities including the Beatles swore by it.
If you have not tried it before, I really recommend that you do. It has done wonders for me, and have led me to think differently about my own consciousness
I hope you enjoy this video, and that you will consider subscribing to this channel, as we talk a lot about tools and strategies to optimize your mind, body, soul, and relationships.

I appreciate your explanation. I was a teacher of TM back in the 1970s. TM is a good technique but the mantras are chosen by the age of the person. Nothing spiritual about it. I remember my own disappointment in 1972 when Maharishi told me the mantras and the ages face to face in Fiuggi, Italty. Mantra secrecy and allocation are a business strategy.

Thanks for your honesty, l learnt TM in 1986, i fell out with the organisation, saw through the deceptive Mahesh Prasad, but returned to just using the technique whenever I felt I needed it.

The mantras themselves are very spiritual being Sanskrit names of God.

@@garygrunstein634 the mantras are bheeja mantras or codewords for Hindu dieties.
My own mantra was for the goddess Lakshmi, so whilst repeating it over and over I am invoking the powers of that god. This is not as the TM organisation sell it to you as a meaningless sound.
One of the advanced techniques add 'namah' after the mantra which translates to, l bow down.

If Maharishi only knew what has cometh of the spiritual TM practice he founded in 1950's and how it's been monetized/ commercialized, he'd totally be rolling in the grave! It was not his intention to charge exorbitant fees in the form of thousands of euros and back then, fees were much less and only meant to be donations to faciliate world tours of TM teachers as they spread the techqnique to those that wouldn't otherwise have access ~. Which is most definitely not the equivalent of building business empires and castles in central London and NYC!

There are two other reasons for not speaking your mantra out loud.
First is because the mantra will develop a fixed point. As long as it is only a sound in your head, as time goes by, it will stretch and shrink, get higher or lower take a crescendo or a diminuendo, and so on. If you actually say it out loud, you will create a reference point. It will become fixed in it’s properties and you will always have that sound that you once spoke out loud as an echo in your memory and that will stop the mantra from evolving in harmony with your mind.
Second is a kind of Wittgenstein reason. Words create realities. As long as nobody actually calls you an idiot, you can go on believing that they imagine that you are clever. As soon as the word “idiot” is spoken out loud, you suddenly really know what the person is thinking, and the word can never be unspoken again. Words (and mantras) have 2 phases, the unspoken phase, when they are not interacting with our physical world, and the spoken phase, which is like a little crystallisation, it will fix a small part of our world forever in a particular way. Well. That might be true, and then again might not. But it’s my opinion for what it’s worth.

@@ceciliapena3294 Actually that thing about the mantra sound staying in your memory and stopping the mantra from freely developing: That was told to me at my initiation in 1970 when I asked my teacher about why we should keep it secret. Great stuff. I was initiated into TM over 43 years ago by a teacher who was trained directly by the Maharishi. I would like to share a few observations after these many years. First, meditation is a process that evolves over time. There is no 'end point' or 'end game' per se - just evolution. When I learned TM as a 19 year old freshman in January of 1977, I had very little spiritual grounding. I did not keep the practice going. In fact, it was another 35 years later that I finally picked the practice up as an essential part of my life. Before that, I would start for a few months and then it would just drop off. Of course, the 'process' was happening even in the years that I was too undisciplined to meditate. Be gentle with yourself and know if you are directed to TM, it is a life transforming process that continues on and on - even when you are not practicing. Of course, the benefits flow far faster and greater when you practice, but it's not all or nothing. I do lots of magical/spiritual practices today, but TM is still my 'go to' technique. It's simple and very effective, and efficient.

Me, began in 1982, picked up a used book “Centering” which gave me a method of progressive body relaxation with a 5-5-5 breathing cycle. Only a few days into practicing at least 1x a day for 45-60 minutes, I astral projected and it freaked me out so much that I couldn’t get the same vibe back for myself. But my mind & heart & soul recently whispered in my ear to begin anew & so I find you today.🙏 I had to slog through a crap ton of absolute shiite vids on TM that were like 5 minutes long or even 1:41 min, & I’m like what knowledge can those unfortunate a$$ 🤡’s share or IMPART in 2 minutes. @@raphaelreiter I'm interested in hearing what your overall take is on it now? And what do you think of the David Lynch Foundation? Edit: Just watching your video "Is TM a scam" which pretty much answers the question :) But I'll leave my comment here anyway. It seems like big business. And they're adamant that it HAS to be taught by an instructor. And if their imperative and their mission is to spread TM to as many people as possible, why would they sue someone for teaching it?
Original comment: Maybe I'm way off the mark, but it just strikes me that there's no real need for TM teaching/training, it seems like something that could be given away for free (?) But maybe it developed the way it did because initially, somebody had to teach it (no youtube in the 50s...), they needed to make a living too. And it grew to where people are still charging money to teach it because they can; but they have to deceive people a little bit to do that.
Do you think that's fair to say? It just seems a bit suspicious that they are happy to maintain the mystery behind the mantra and keep people believing that they *need* a teacher to give them a mantra, when that's not necessary at all. And it sounds like you felt a little bit conned after finding out about the real source of the mantras? Would you pay for the class again, knowing the mantra is just taken from a preset list?
I really like David Lynch and he strikes me as a true believer. But looking at the website for the David Lynch Foundation, I can't help but think... 1) At face value it resembles the website of any other shady self-help scheme and 2) Again, it just seems like maybe they're charging money for something that could be given away for free.
And I don't know if that's right or wrong! But if there's elements of deceit and pseudo-religious-spirituality to it, I think that's shady.
But at the same time, maybe David Lynch himself just truly believes in it and he thinks this is a good way to spread TM to as many people as possible.
I don't know.... it seems like a legitimate technique that's been corrupted. Like, a really good product being sold through multi-level marketing - still a great product, but the way it's being sold isn't right.
But maybe I'm wrong, it's just the impression I get.

Just so that people know. My mantra was whispered into my ear by my TM instructor and I repeated it back to him so that he knew I got it. I have never repeated it to another person. I would venture to say that mantra has been given to another person. Repeating that mantra is really no different than focusing on the in and out breath. It's simple a mental focal point. It's only "special" if you label it as such. It is only special to me in that the experience of receiving it was special at the time. TM is not about labeling and is a method by which you transcend mental labels. The transcendent state that may be reached using this technique can be reached in a number of ways using portals. The breath is one, so is nature. The transcendent state is your natural state. It is who you are. It is the real you prior to all the conditioning we get in this lifetime; until we don't.

I love the idea of TM, I really do. It seems like an amazing self-help tool for clarity, anxiety/depression relief or whatever.
The thing is...its totally ruined by the paywall. The type of relief TM promises shouldn't be behind paid classes. The fact that it is behind that makes it seem less valid and more cult-like. Similar to Scientology (even though TM probably is a legitimate self help technique).
TM gives off a huge pyramid scheme vibe due to the monetary ask. Make this info available to the public or else it will keep getting written off by the general public as a scam to take advantage of people.

@@raphaelreiter Dude you might want to look up Farias's meta-analysis of reports of adverse effects of meditation, TM and other mantra meditations some of the worst potential side effects of all the meditations, which doesn't surprise me becasue I think they also really alter your state of conciousness and all medicines have side effects, right? if it works it's going to have the potential to do harm, but it's definitely something to be wary of with depression because it can make depression worse (and of course it can also make it better or not impact it). Also if you have any history of psychosis in your family, it's a serious risk with mantra meditation, but it always seems to happen to people who do it for hours on end, shorter meditations seem lower risk

This is a shame! What you describe/observe here is not at all what it is. I stumbled across the TM teacher serving a large part of the UK, including where I live. I was so lucky to discover this as she is only 10 minutes drive away from my house. I contacted her because I needed "something" that would help me. I had had a horrific couple of years and wasted hundreds of pounds on therapists who were, in the end, useless. The cost of learning and becoming initiated into TM is based on your income, i.e. what you can afford. I had split up with my husband and lost my Dad as well as other close family and friends. On top of this there were a whole load of other sad situations affecting me and my life and indeed my peace. I was at my lowest and due to the situation I found myself in, I really couldn't afford to pay. My husband had been the earner and I the full time carer of my disabled son. It's a long story I guess, so the long and the short of it is... I contacted this wonderful teacher and she offered me an Incredible financial option. I, of course was extremely grateful and humbled and we soon got together and continued with my teachings and initiation.... All without me parting with a single penny. I honestly do not know what would've happened to me (and my son) if I hadn't happened upon this wonderful lady and incredible opportunity. I am 6 months down the road now and have so much to be excited about, thanks to TM and a wonderful teacher.I have learned so much and the light at the end of the tunnel is definitely not another train ... Why do they charge so much for an infinite resource that has the power to help people around the world? Everyone needs good meditation techniques and most of the world couldn't afford these lessons without years of savings (most of the world doesn't even make what minimum wage in the US makes in a week in months.). If you try to teach these techniques for free they try to shut you down. To me, the TM organization seems likes one of the scummiest organizations on the planet. They're more scummy than that that pharma company that gouged the prices of AIDS medication because the medicine here is an infinite resource.

@Sajid Abdurrahman How do you define "too much"? Most of those other organizations you mention have little if any effect on society. TM has had a lot of effect in many aspects. Health, education, rehabilitation, business, science. Without a structured organization, that takes $$$, very little gets done. But it "feels" good to talk about. If you really like free, then go ahead and get your free stuff. I have noticed that free stuff often is wanted but not appreciated. Most that get some type of meditation free, don't continue. Remember free relates to little to no value.

You don't tell anyone your mantra because you don't want the slightest hint of judgement placed upon your choice of gibberish. Judgement of your mantra would be damaging at a quantum level, and could hold you back from transcending.

Peace and blessings, Raphael. I just want to pass on my thoughts on the TM mantras. I was initiated in Transcendental Meditation in 1973, by Bill Duke, who was taught TM by founder, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, in India, I believe, in the '60s. I also read in books, that the mantra has no real meaning. However, based on my personal experience, I believe what is actually meant by (having no meaning) is, the mantra has no useful meaning for the world of the five senses, however, in the world of the conscious and subconscious, the mantra, or high vibrations of the sound, acts as an anchor that attaches the conscious mind to the subconscious mind, thereby making the conscious and subconscious one. You can consciously see into the subconscious mind as the mantra, acting as a hook, pulls the conscious mind deeper and deeper into the subconscious mind until it reaches the source of all thinking, Beyond which, there are no more thoughts. They do not exist beyond this realm as you transcend towards the highest state of consciousness, where you are conscious of nothing but pure consciousness itself. No thoughts, no gender, no-body, no ego, only conscious of being conscious. Pure I AM consciousness. That was my experience on the first meditation, guided by Bill Duke. It was utterly amazing. Words cannot describe my personal experience, as it relates to my inner experience on the way to being in what I call, "The Secret Place Of The Most-High". It was pure bliss. So, the Mantra is a high vibrational anchor. I believe I was blessed to have experienced on my first TM meditation attempt, this ultimate state of bliss. Truth is, in all these years afterwards, I have yet to experience it to that degree again. Again, the mantra is an anchor to pull the conscious mind deep into the subconscious. The mantra is only useful in the inner life. It has no meaning, otherwise, in the world of the five (5) senses.

That was a decent explanation of how a mantra (TM or otherwise) has power in the mind, to change your state of consciousness, you explain it clearly and minus the TM psycho babble.
You were extremely lucky to experience such a deep transcendental experience on your initiation, I had a similar experience, years after quitting TM and in an almost surreal situation where I sat with an Indian yogi gentleman, who asked me if he could 'try and make me see something'. I was cynical but what occurred would take a lot of words to explain as you already know. I emerged from that meditation after 30 minutes in, what seemed, completely new surroundings and a new lighter mind!
My advice to anyone who is thinking about TM is don't pay for a technique (unless you have a lot of spare cash), just learn the basic technique, the add on and advanced techniques are just to suck you in to a money go round, more importantly DO NOT practice twice a day everyday, only use meditation when you feel at times it may be beneficial.

The org has also offered TM training to students in some rough areas (I was living in LA at the time and I learned that many students in south central LA had learned the technique for free as well.) So if you can afford the course you really help to provide opportunities for others who cannot afford it or even for children to learn the benefits of TM. Just make up a 3-syllable word that means nothing and reminds you of nothing. Vibrationally speaking, it's best if it ends in "om". It's secret kind of. I mean thousands of others are using the same sounds. You don't want to go discussing it with friends and family maybe because so many ways those sounds can take on meanings as you relate them to people or conversations, life events etc. I heard my original given sound used on a show called Knifes Out. Clearly the writers or the actor had heard it from somewhere. I thought it would screw me up at first but it didn't. I might think about that a time or two during my practice but that doesn't seem to affect things in a negative way. Also I have and App on my Phone that I use mostly in the afternoon called Giant Mind, which is a pretty good way to learn VM or TM if you can not find or afford a teacher. On the app they just use Ahhhumm . Dose not seem to matter to my brain.

I learned TM a long time ago, only cost $165.00 at the time. It is a good way to meditate but at this point way way too expensive. Giving ones attention to a mantra and ignoring all other thoughts works well for many people. Simply find a mantra that is agreeable to you or simply use Om. If this doesn't work well, try using a youtube video of OM or another mantra and see if that helps you keep your attention on the mantra. Raphael, do you have any-other videos where you discuss TM ? Thanks for the video.

You can use any word. The actual mantra is insignificant. In tm they are names of deities - you can google that. But I recommend just using a simple word

Sound or frequencies can help or hurt any life form. MOST sounds in nature resonate to our optimal health while MOST man made sounds don’t.
So a mantra that mimics sounds of nature and resonates with you, can have profound power. If there is a single, optimal frequency for human kind, I’d want it to be shared!

I visited the TM headquarters in my city of residence in Malaysia.
And there, I was given the whole power point pitch (the background, the guru, etc ) , and then I was told My mantra could be unlocked for the low low price of 1600 bucks!
Well, okay I guess they are running a business and have to pay rent. But why Not convey this info over the many emails and messages of inquiry which preceded this presentation.
I didn’t have that kind of money to spare and would have not wasted their time or mine, if I knew in advance.
Where I am from MLMs use this tactic a lot. Anyhoo, I have nothing against mediation and love the simple videos on TH-cam. :)
But at that moment in time when it was pitched that way, made me a bit uncomfortable. Like ‘hey, the only thing standing in the way of enlightenment is You not willing to go into a bit of debt’.

Hi Chrissy, please see my more recent videos. This is an old video. There are many other ways that you can meditate, for free. We meditate every day on this channel, this is a good starting point. I looked up years later, and found that my mantra that I paid a lot for was indeed only based on my year of birth. Save your money and focus on what really matters. Love

Yes, that is all well and good, but then, how do we put food on the table? Do we respond to our bills with: I wont pay today because I am a meditation teacher, but I will send you good vibes?
I teach meditation for FREE every single day on this channel. However, I do count on the generosity of some to make small donations and members of my live meditation streams so that I am not too much at a loss.
I agree that you dont need to pay for your spiritual journey, but your guide (and his or her family need to eat too)
