    When you buy raw denim jeans are you supposed to buy them like 2 sizes bigger? Because that’s what I’ve heard, I heard they shrink a lot when you wash them.

    • @Stridewise

      Yeah if it's raw it'll shrink, you soak/wash them after you buy them. IF they're raw, not all selvedge is!

      Raw denim will not shrink if it has been properly Sanforized by the manufacturer. Make sure you're purchasing Sanforized raw denim, as only low-tier raw denim is not Sanforized.

      @@TheSkullonfire Yeah sizing is scary even when you've been wearing them for ages because you're buying online! Just find somewhere you can buy in store. 1:27 sounds like good advice: wash as needed depending on the context of wear. Another factor would be the lighter the wash/color, the more likely you'll need to wash 'em. I work at an outdoor music venue, and every summer there's dudes rocking their brand new, expensive, impossibly white, white skinny jeans. They come in with 'em whiter than white, but almost invariably leave with grass stains, food spills, ketcup drippings, mud (if it rains) and just use your imagination, they're a perfect bullseye for stains.

    My routine is Dryel "dry cleaning" stain removal pens when there is a visibly dirty area. They work well to clean the stain and be gentle on the denim. Use a damp rag to follow up on that area. My tip to avoid washing is actually having an LG Styler (Samsung makes a model as well.) These are steamers in a closet shape and has worked wonders on keeping my denim fresh without using the conventional washer/dryer route. The LG model actually "shakes" the clothes while it works so I think it even has some cleaning potential for loose dust, etc. It was a pretty decent investment but to be honest, I've felt it was worth the cost considering the money I've put in my denim. A bonus of one of these steamer closets is if you feel the need to wash your denim, they still have gentle dry cycles that will replicate a hang dry method.

      @@Stridewise yes. Freezing kill the majority bacteria. Some bacteria takes a while to die under freezer temperatures but most bacteria dies in your freezer after a couple of days and with it, the majority of smells. The smell comes from bacteria. Putting food in the fridge or freezer reduces the rate at which existing bacteria multiplies on your food. It does not kill bacteria or prevent it from getting on your food in the first place. That is why food has a shelf life in both the fridge and freezer and colder conditions in the freezer extend the shelf life further than the fridge.

    I'm a little confused. If I want a straight foldback cuff, I need to wash and dry the jeans a couple times (usually warm setting) before getting it hemmed to the right length before cuffing to take care of any shrinkage. And selvedge denim jeans are supposed to be soaked and hang dried before wearing to get rid of impurities and enhance the strength of the fibers.
    So how do I get strong fades after doing this? If I was to temporarily cuff and wear them for a few months before washing, shrinking, tailoring, and cuffing, those original cuff marks would leave a permanent mark.

      I think it'd help if it's selvedge, especially if it's raw. I do need to do a more thorough guide to washing your jeans though!

      @@Stridewise I generally agree with you Nick but will disagree here with the selvedge part. Selvedge or not is pure novelty and has no bearing on the function compared to shuttle loom fabrics. To the OP I'd say if they're unsanforized or shrink-to-fit as commented above it might mould better with you doing that but the measurements they started out in will matter more.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@redironbird3857 You're right that whether or not something is made on a shuttle loom doesn't by definition mean it's thicker, slubbier, sanforized, unsanforized, etc. I was speaking in generalities to simplify, but I shouldn't have!

    Step 1. Shower. Step 2. Lysol crotch (of your jeans guys) lightly as needed. Step 3. Rotate your jeans. Step 4. Have beater jeans for when you plan to get dirty, and your nice ones for looking good. Step 5. Don't be a crust punker... STAPHYLOCOCCUS isn't cool.... When it's time, it's time.... Wash when you need.

    Freezing kills the majority of bacteria. Some bacteria takes a while to die under regular freezer temperatures but most bacteria dies in your freezer after a couple of days and with it, the majority of smells. The smell comes from bacteria. On top of that, cold temperatures help dissipate smells (smells are made up of oils that disintegrate and dissipate under cold temperatures).
