Love how Sun is a generally cool if moderately chaotic guy. Like Princess Iron Fan asks "Hey I know I was antagonizing before, but I'm trying to be better about that. Can I have the fan back? It's actually kind of important to me." and after checking to make sure she's not lying Sun is like "Sure, go for it girl."
I feel like Sun, of ALL PEOPLE, denying someone a second chance to mend their ways would just get permanent stink eye from the Buddha. Which is super awkward because that means it's just everywhere, at all times, no matter where you look or go.
Monkey being immediately on PIF’s side in the love triangle is hilarious to me and fully on brand. PIF was able to keep up with monkey’s fighting ability, he 100% thinks they’re friends now
For all of his failings, Monkey takes Duty rather seriously, and Filial duty was a big one for China. Throughout the pilgrimage, he's regularly going after people not just because "obstacle" but because they've committed some sort of faux pax, and ditching your wife to two time with another woman is a big one. We've also, notably, reached the point in the story where it becomes a little harder to picture monkey as the guy who caused all that trouble. His character development is real.

@@aradraugfea6755 Honestly, Princess Iron Fan was mostly a victim lashing out at Sun Wukong after having a lot of really awful things happen to her in a row, so it seems plausible to me that once they were both calm and had had some time to think things over, they buried the hatchet and she decided she SHOULD go rethink her life choices.
Also helps how he knew PIF and BDK were married back when they were bros, before Sun got a mountain dropped on his ass. Like imagine getting jailed/leaving the country then coming back to seeing your bro cheating on his devoted wife who's also a good friend, especially to a 304. I'd be going 'dude wtf' too.
Princess Iron Fan is probably my favorite JTTW character to date. She's a badass, then a mood, then the voice of reason, and then finally she's on her way to a full redemption arc. She's basically Zuko if he had a more tragic romantic subplot.

The reason the god can summon ghost soldiers is because he was demoted to be a Tudigong, the local land deity, who not only oversee the local geographical location and it's people, but also acts a minor god of death, having an administrative role over the deaths in that area. Think of it as the manager of a local Walmart calling security.
It’s pretty interesting how corporate and bureaucratic Chinese mythology is! Like the concepts of suing someone and paper money is very old in China thanks to how centralized and massive the imperial governments of China were for millennia, so I guess it’s no wonder it started seeping into the everyday cultural consciousness, especially for the literate and fairly affluent people of the time who would at least know one person employed in the government and also would be the likely audience for JTTW.
@@kbye2321 Recall the first few episodes where Sun Wukong destroyed the Book of Death. It's reasonable to suspect that Death got a lot of things wrong and then used this to even the books. Virtually the entire book is a satire on bureaucracy.

The ending was actually very wholesome. She realized that he was a jerk to her, and she needed to focus on herself to get better. The fact that she did such a great improvement within an extremely short time shows that she's an incredibly strong woman.
Seeing Sun Wukong go from basically an agent of objective, unfettered, self-interested chaos to a guy who's willing to (attempt to) talk things out and give back the toys he borrows is really nice to see.
The fact that this single story from a 430-year-old epic contains shape-shifter espionage culminating in a FUCKING KAIJU BATTLE speaks volumes about how much modern literature was influenced by this book.
What's even more interesting to me, is the fact that the same shit we would think of now, they thought of back then. Like, who doesn't want to see a giant monkey and a giant bull throwdown in some mountains for the sake of drama beef. There's some beauty in that, I think

@@manmanguy8301 Nothing traumatic just I didn't like having strong emotional responses it felt rude to let my emotions yank me around like a puppet and make me do crazy things (especially considering my emotions weren't always scene-appropriate). So I started training myself to dull my own emotions particularly sadness (really didn't like crying somehow got the messed up idea only the weak cry) the eventual result was my emotions were so dulled I barely responded (if I responded at all). On quizzes about my experience or thoughts, I always gave the answers that were closest to neutral without actually being totally neutral for example how was your experience with X? terrible, not great, neutral, pretty good, amazing! no matter what my experience was actually like I would answer with either pretty good, neutral, or not great and I would never answer with terrible or amazing! because those two responses were too potent to be polite
Fun fact: This is not the last time Sun Wukong gets vored In fact there’s one specific chapter which literally plays out like some kind of vore fic where Wukong gets swallowed and kinda fucks around in the demon’s stomach for an uncomfortably long time

It's interesting that we're starting to see real growth in Sun here. He handles this whole situation by himself, the rest of the group are barely mentioned, but he handles it pretty responsibly. He's trying to do good deeds and doesn't immediately resort to violence. Seems fitting for an episode with a major boss fight.
I saw people mention on the six eared macaque episode that Sun has a noticably different behavior after the macaque situation, and that some readers wondered if theres a chance that they accidentally got rid of the real sun wukong and kept the disguised macaque 😅 I dont believe this but its funny to think about

I love the implication that any one of these big names is actually fully capable of flipping the whole heaven, they just never had cause to consider it until Monkey gets involved. It's like a metaphor for society and the mind or something.
I like how in a tale where Sun solves a trouble that was at least partially caused by him showing how much he changed already and his disposition to do that he also grants the same to Princess Iron Fan by recognizing her sinceriry and giving her fan back. Like he is becoming a better person so she can as well and he is all for it.
Can we all appreciate how gosh dang consistent this channel is. The style, the feel, everything that made me fall in love with the first journey to the west video has remained more consistent than major TV shows. Keep in mind, that video came out over 8 years ago! I found this channel a month ago. I've loved everything about it and I've been binging it. This was my latest binge, but I didn't look at the dates. The Playlist stopped playing and I saw the last video was made a month ago. Slightly dismayed I would have to wait a month or so, I checked the other dates. My heart sank as I saw 1 year ago, 2 years ago, 3 years ago, etc. Suiting for such an epic tale and I wouldn't have it any other way, since it is getting the love and quality it deserves. Still, I can't wait for the next installment. This is my new all time favorite channel ever! Thank you for your amazing videos! You've brought such light and joy to my life!

Huh. I actually feel really bad for Iron Fan. She didn't deserve anything that happened to her. Her husband ditched her for a richer and prettier woman. Her son was taken away from her, and while he is in a safe place, she'll never see him again. She has to constantly blow away a flaming mountain that Sun Wu Kong caused. And her husband only came back to her when he needed her fan, not her. I really hope all the best for her later on. Because damn, she needs a break. Edit: While yes, she didn't have to keep blowing away the fire, I have a feeling it's the only thing keeping her alive. She's required to sit in one place where her husband can find her. And all she asks from the villagers is a portion of their crops and livestock after. For such a raging, raving fire, it doesn't seem like it's too bad of a trade as compared to some of the other demons we've seen who demand sacrifices of the children in the villages.
Im curious if any iron fan fanfiction has been made, her having "and she achieved redemption in the future" feels like prime real estate for a spin off

See, Dragonball is heavily inspired by Journey to the West, with the Ox King being the stand in for the Bull Demon King. Now, the owner of the fan itself was altered quite a bit (Roshi had it instead of her) but there's still a girl who's related to the Bull Demon/Ox King, is stronger than she looks, wears armor, and is a princess. Her name..is Chi Chi. And if you know anything about Dragonball, you know how her story ends up.
fun fact, The Flaming Mountain was based on a real mountain in Xinjiang, it is now a famous tourist spot and I visited when I was a kid, shop owners there like to sell mineral waters that were completely frozen to an ice chunk and temperature there can often go as high as 50 degree, making it one of the hottest place(if not the hottest) in china. i can still recall when I was a kid who is dying of thirst and somehow everyone is selling frozen mineral water, there is literally no liquid in the mineral water bottle, it was a hell of an experience for an 8 years old, not to mention my parents insists me to visit the mountain where "the great monkey king" has fought on and dragged me from our car to the tourist attraction spot.
Fun fact: the Bull Demon King's mount at 8:15 is repeatedly described as a "water-repellent golden-eyed beast". Nothing else about it is ever elaborated upon, only that it has golden eyes and is waterproof.
If I aquired a dime for everythime Sun Wukong was consumed by his enemy in order to defeat them, I'd have two dimes. Which isn't much, but you think there would be more considering this guy.
Iron Fan is probably the most likable redeemable villain in the series up to now (unless you classify Sun as one, which is not *entirely* unfounded). She's good enough to have gotten a human form, doesn't use her power maliciously (Well, not fully putting out the fire is a bit scummy, but at least it isn't a full-on protection racket), has a reasonable motivation for attacking Sun (Red Boy WAS the only one left after BDK's betrayal, and while he deserved his punishment it still broke her heart), didn't even try to attack the heavenly army just because they wounded her pride and actually decided to redeem herself. I hope she and reformed Red Boy get their happy ending. To be fair, the other villains all tried to eat Tripataka, enslaved an entire town, monopolized abortion rights or commited unrepentend thievery and copyright violation, so the bar is pretty low.
Given she apparently succeeds in her own journey, I can't help but wonder if she goes and visits her son. After all, she knows where he is and, unless there's another restriction I'm unaware of, she can actually get there with her human body.

you might enjoy Monkey Magic (1998). It chronicles Sun Wukong's (well, Son Goku) journey into immortality and subsequent fall from grace, ending with meeting Tripitaka only 13 episodes sadly but quite a trip

I get the distinct impression that the Bull Demon King is meant to be Sun Wukong's equal in almost every way. So it makes sense why everyone immediately jumps in to try to stop him: They do NOT want another Monkey King situation on their hands. In fact, that might explain why everything went so well compared to how it normally goes. Since you had not just Sun Wukong, but also an army of ghosts, powerful Buddist warriors, AND a Heaven that's been preparing itself just in case Wukong flies off the handle again, all trying to stop Bull Demon King.
He is one of Sun Wukong's peers, there is a whole set of demon kings that are his sworn brothers, and while Sun is the strongest and certainly caused the most problems- ie requiring the BUDDA to show up and stop him, the rest are almost as powerful, and just haven't caused enough of a mess to get dealt with, or they saw what happened to Wukong when HE did and have laid low in comparison to him. So of course as soon as he starts potentially being a problem the heaven's escalate to stop him before we get another Monkey King wupping all of heaven scenario- note that it was 4 buddist figures that cornered him before the forces of heaven jump in.
@@timothycarney9652 Nah only bull demon king was actually rivaling wukong or let's say after 500 years of training while wukong was imprisoned by the buddha he become close to prime wukong when he fought the heaven however So i see that when wukong and bull demon king become sworn brothers they were equal in power with wukong being a step above him but after wukong fought the underworld and heavens and got his other immortality he became on a different level of power in where the gap between him and bull demon king at that point was very extremely huge and even though he and the other demon kings fought alongside wukong against heaven but wukong did like 85% of the point and fought the strongest heavenly warrior erlangshen and the other celestial army while the other demon kings did 15% and maybe they have fought powerful warriors especially bull king who fought a pretty powerful warrior from heaven but not on same level as erlang , nezha and four heavenly kings But after wukong got prison for 500 years the bull demon king train and fought for 500 years in order to reach the level of sun wukong at that time i see he truly reach his level
The bit about Princess Iron Fan got to me. It might be a monster of the week type story but to have a "villain" step down reflect, change and try and led a better life and actually succeed. It's something else man!
She was barely a villain tbh. She married BDK had a child her child got arrested by Heaven and she’ll never see him again, BDK left her for a rich home wrecker, and the entire time she helped some farmers with a burning mountain Sun caused. She only fights Sun because he ruined what was left of her family. She gets her heart broken twice (four times if you count Sun arresting Red Boy and BDK leaving) Sun disguises himself as her husband getting her hopes up and then breaking it by tricking her and stealing the fan, she drinks herself half to death over it only for her real husband to show up not for her but for the fan. By the time it’s all over she’s had a good long think about her life.
What’s really interesting is that LEGO Monkie Kid handles the Demon Bull King and Princess Iron Fan’s relationship very differently. In the show, the two are actually very devoted to each other, to the point that Demon Bull King will threaten anyone who hurts or threatens his wife. It’s absolutely adorable, and you should all go watch the show because it’s amazing
It's my headcanon that in LMK, DBK had his own thing of bettering himself, and after however many years, got back with PIF and stayed with her from then on, promising to be better. And then they also got their Red back after a few years or so after he chilled out a bit. Lol
I started this series yesterday thinking that *surely* this 11 part summary videos that started 7 years ago would be over by now, so now im a little concerned to learn that this is not, in fact, the last part of the story and this video came out last month Besides that though, great series! I've been learning a lot and your narration and drawings are very funny and help understanding the story in a very dynamic way. Genuinely awesome series!
Imagine causing such a ruckus that they have to call upon the four heavenly kings, heavens army, and a Sun Wukong emergency magic mirror to put you into time out. This really do be one of those fights that last like 3 episodes.
Journey to the West continues to be the greatest fever dream of a classical work I can imagine and love to see both summarized and illustrated this way.
Black Myth Wukong chapter 5 made me rewatch this. It's amazing and all seem to go well from Wukong & the gang's perspective but when we go back to the ch 5 animation it's actually pretty tragic for BDK's family. Just shows how the Heavenly Palace damages them, from BDK & Wukong's sworn brothership to each of the demon's fates.
This is one of my favorite yearly traditions. It's always great seeing Sun Wukong and the gang in another chapter on their Journey to the West. Especially now, after having watched the entirety of Lego Monkie Kid and having fun drawing comparisons. As soon as I heard Iron Fan was in this chapter, I lost it. This chapter doesn't disappoint. Thanks for another great year of videos, guys, see you in 2024.
This story has so many moments of "well, that escalated quickly" starting from a fire mountain blocking the way, to battles between armies, to kaiju fights, and an indirect intervention from the Buddha to boost. Also, I find it's funny that sometime problems are solved because Wukong's reputation precede him, and sometimes people decided to pick fight with the only Monkey that fought the full force of Heaven and was winning.
14:14 And it’s Journey To The West with the Villain Redemption trope! Honestly though, it’s strangely sweet to see that the spiritual through-line of bettering oneself through Buddhism can apply to the villains too. We’ve seen a bit of it with Red Son I think, but to have a former villain decide to change their life for themselves and Sun Wukong encouraging that change by keeping to his word and returning the fan feels like some great development.
Yeah, and whereas Demon Bull King kept being stubborn even when Princess Iron Fan pleaded enough was enough, she decided to let go of her anger and pride to become human while her husband got essentially carted off to jail.
@@Bezaliel13 Well that's cos in Buddhism the different forms are varying degrees of nearing purity/enlightenment, with attaining Buddhahood when you reach enlightenment (humans are middle tier in this arrangement). That's what the whole reincarnation thing is about as well - the amount/type of karma you accumulate affects your body for the next life. Them demons and spirits, being long-lived, usually won't die and reincarnate but they can cultivate themselves and transform their existing body into a higher form.

In the book, he really is that nice, he never causes troubles for the gang and even tried to defend Monkey in the White Bone Demon Arc. There's even a few scenes with him that are hilarious

Honestly, as someone who gets reminded of Journey to the West like, every year or so (thanks to lunar new year), I actually tune out a lot of the inbetween episodic contents, so it's really fun to rewatch it in such a simplified and modern retelling of it. Makes it so much more enjoyable than watching the usual...bad CGI drama renditions of it.
It didn't seem possible that Red's illustration could get more chibified, but the in-universe plushies of Bull Demon and Princess Iron Fan @6:07 are soooo *_cute!_* 😙 Also, safe to say the “RRRRRAAAAA!” let loose by Princess Iron Fan (@9:24) is not just cuz she was tricked by Sun but bcuz she's been suffering a _gods-only-knows-how-long_ dry spell and was hoping to get a serious bout of loving with the hubby xD.
Princess Iron Fan spitting out a tiny fan to show who she thinks is her husband with a dopey smile was lowkey very cute for some reason? Lowkey I love Princess Iron Fan. She knew when she was outmatched but was still clever enough to trick Sun Wukong! She's surprisingly tragic for a "monster of the week" and she's done what no other monster has, which was reflecting on her life and changing for the better ON HER OWN TERMS!! No forced rehabilitation by a Bodhisattva or becoming a monk. She decided to be better and she succeeded on her own. I love that.
Her trick is even better when you consider it and the later reveal of where the fan was actually hidden together. Sun Wukong *almost* found the real fan by complete accident, which was probably *quite* a shock for Princess Iron Fan, but she managed to redirect his attention so he never realized that he actually passed the thing twice.
10:20 in all fairness, Pigsy could have just offered to "carry" the fan for him just to quickly dash over to Tripitaka afterwards, put out the fire with the fan and steal the glory for solving their problem

I am right there with you. I'm trying to find a full version in english That is unAbridged. It's difficult because a lot of the copies of journey to the west I found Are all abridged. But 1 day I'm gonna find the full story and when I read it. I know i'm gonna hear her voice in my head as I do. And also probably hear the ball demon king sounding like kronk And the jade emperor sounding like blue Stepped on a mouse trap. I got home I loved the way he plays the jade emperor it's so cute.
I swear, the escalating levels of both your art and Wu’s storytelling are what make each episode of this series spectacular. As someone who is (largely) unfamiliar with the text, this part culminating in a kaiju battle, illustrated in such a ridiculously epic fashion, is nothing short of fucking _awesome._ Each installment is better than the last. Keep up the good work!

Monkey being immediately on PIF’s side in the love triangle is hilarious to me and fully on brand. PIF was able to keep up with monkey’s fighting ability, he 100% thinks they’re friends now
For all of his failings, Monkey takes Duty rather seriously, and Filial duty was a big one for China. Throughout the pilgrimage, he's regularly going after people not just because "obstacle" but because they've committed some sort of faux pax, and ditching your wife to two time with another woman is a big one.
We've also, notably, reached the point in the story where it becomes a little harder to picture monkey as the guy who caused all that trouble. His character development is real.

Princess Iron Fan is probably my favorite JTTW character to date. She's a badass, then a mood, then the voice of reason, and then finally she's on her way to a full redemption arc. She's basically Zuko if he had a more tragic romantic subplot.

The ending was actually very wholesome. She realized that he was a jerk to her, and she needed to focus on herself to get better. The fact that she did such a great improvement within an extremely short time shows that she's an incredibly strong woman.

It's interesting that we're starting to see real growth in Sun here. He handles this whole situation by himself, the rest of the group are barely mentioned, but he handles it pretty responsibly. He's trying to do good deeds and doesn't immediately resort to violence. Seems fitting for an episode with a major boss fight.
I saw people mention on the six eared macaque episode that Sun has a noticably different behavior after the macaque situation, and that some readers wondered if theres a chance that they accidentally got rid of the real sun wukong and kept the disguised macaque 😅 I dont believe this but its funny to think about

Can we all appreciate how gosh dang consistent this channel is. The style, the feel, everything that made me fall in love with the first journey to the west video has remained more consistent than major TV shows. Keep in mind, that video came out over 8 years ago!
I found this channel a month ago. I've loved everything about it and I've been binging it. This was my latest binge, but I didn't look at the dates. The Playlist stopped playing and I saw the last video was made a month ago. Slightly dismayed I would have to wait a month or so, I checked the other dates. My heart sank as I saw 1 year ago, 2 years ago, 3 years ago, etc. Suiting for such an epic tale and I wouldn't have it any other way, since it is getting the love and quality it deserves. Still, I can't wait for the next installment.

@@tianwangthe Journey to the West story, not the real life inspiration. They mention it being eight years of travel a few chapters back, so if their pace was continuing at that slow a rate we are on track for the journey to be finished at roughly the correct rate.

Her husband ditched her for a richer and prettier woman.
Her son was taken away from her, and while he is in a safe place, she'll never see him again.
She has to constantly blow away a flaming mountain that Sun Wu Kong caused.
And her husband only came back to her when he needed her fan, not her.
I really hope all the best for her later on. Because damn, she needs a break.

While yes, she didn't have to keep blowing away the fire, I have a feeling it's the only thing keeping her alive. She's required to sit in one place where her husband can find her. And all she asks from the villagers is a portion of their crops and livestock after. For such a raging, raving fire, it doesn't seem like it's too bad of a trade as compared to some of the other demons we've seen who demand sacrifices of the children in the villages.

See, Dragonball is heavily inspired by Journey to the West, with the Ox King being the stand in for the Bull Demon King.
Now, the owner of the fan itself was altered quite a bit (Roshi had it instead of her) but there's still a girl who's related to the Bull Demon/Ox King, is stronger than she looks, wears armor, and is a princess.
Her name..is Chi Chi. And if you know anything about Dragonball, you know how her story ends up.
fun fact, The Flaming Mountain was based on a real mountain in Xinjiang, it is now a famous tourist spot and I visited when I was a kid, shop owners there like to sell mineral waters that were completely frozen to an ice chunk and temperature there can often go as high as 50 degree, making it one of the hottest place(if not the hottest) in china. i can still recall when I was a kid who is dying of thirst and somehow everyone is selling frozen mineral water, there is literally no liquid in the mineral water bottle, it was a hell of an experience for an 8 years old, not to mention my parents insists me to visit the mountain where "the great monkey king" has fought on and dragged me from our car to the tourist attraction spot.

Iron Fan is probably the most likable redeemable villain in the series up to now (unless you classify Sun as one, which is not *entirely* unfounded). She's good enough to have gotten a human form, doesn't use her power maliciously (Well, not fully putting out the fire is a bit scummy, but at least it isn't a full-on protection racket), has a reasonable motivation for attacking Sun (Red Boy WAS the only one left after BDK's betrayal, and while he deserved his punishment it still broke her heart), didn't even try to attack the heavenly army just because they wounded her pride and actually decided to redeem herself. I hope she and reformed Red Boy get their happy ending.
To be fair, the other villains all tried to eat Tripataka, enslaved an entire town, monopolized abortion rights or commited unrepentend thievery and copyright violation, so the bar is pretty low.
Given she apparently succeeds in her own journey, I can't help but wonder if she goes and visits her son. After all, she knows where he is and, unless there's another restriction I'm unaware of, she can actually get there with her human body.

I get the distinct impression that the Bull Demon King is meant to be Sun Wukong's equal in almost every way.
So it makes sense why everyone immediately jumps in to try to stop him: They do NOT want another Monkey King situation on their hands.
In fact, that might explain why everything went so well compared to how it normally goes. Since you had not just Sun Wukong, but also an army of ghosts, powerful Buddist warriors, AND a Heaven that's been preparing itself just in case Wukong flies off the handle again, all trying to stop Bull Demon King.
He is one of Sun Wukong's peers, there is a whole set of demon kings that are his sworn brothers, and while Sun is the strongest and certainly caused the most problems- ie requiring the BUDDA to show up and stop him, the rest are almost as powerful, and just haven't caused enough of a mess to get dealt with, or they saw what happened to Wukong when HE did and have laid low in comparison to him.
So of course as soon as he starts potentially being a problem the heaven's escalate to stop him before we get another Monkey King wupping all of heaven scenario- note that it was 4 buddist figures that cornered him before the forces of heaven jump in.

Nah only bull demon king was actually rivaling wukong or let's say after 500 years of training while wukong was imprisoned by the buddha he become close to prime wukong when he fought the heaven however
So i see that when wukong and bull demon king become sworn brothers they were equal in power with wukong being a step above him but after wukong fought the underworld and heavens and got his other immortality he became on a different level of power in where the gap between him and bull demon king at that point was very extremely huge and even though he and the other demon kings fought alongside wukong against heaven but wukong did like 85% of the point and fought the strongest heavenly warrior erlangshen and the other celestial army while the other demon kings did 15% and maybe they have fought powerful warriors especially bull king who fought a pretty powerful warrior from heaven but not on same level as erlang , nezha and four heavenly kings
But after wukong got prison for 500 years the bull demon king train and fought for 500 years in order to reach the level of sun wukong at that time i see he truly reach his level
The bit about Princess Iron Fan got to me. It might be a monster of the week type story but to have a "villain" step down reflect, change and try and led a better life and actually succeed. It's something else man!
One of my favorite tropes.
She was barely a villain tbh. She married BDK had a child her child got arrested by Heaven and she’ll never see him again, BDK left her for a rich home wrecker, and the entire time she helped some farmers with a burning mountain Sun caused. She only fights Sun because he ruined what was left of her family. She gets her heart broken twice (four times if you count Sun arresting Red Boy and BDK leaving) Sun disguises himself as her husband getting her hopes up and then breaking it by tricking her and stealing the fan, she drinks herself half to death over it only for her real husband to show up not for her but for the fan. By the time it’s all over she’s had a good long think about her life.

What’s really interesting is that LEGO Monkie Kid handles the Demon Bull King and Princess Iron Fan’s relationship very differently. In the show, the two are actually very devoted to each other, to the point that Demon Bull King will threaten anyone who hurts or threatens his wife. Journey to the West continues to be the greatest fever dream of a classical work I can imagine and love to see both summarized and illustrated this way.
Black Myth Wukong chapter 5 made me rewatch this. It's amazing and all seem to go well from Wukong & the gang's perspective but when we go back to the ch 5 animation it's actually pretty tragic for BDK's family. Just shows how the Heavenly Palace damages them, from BDK & Wukong's sworn brothership to each of the demon's fates.

This is one of my favorite yearly traditions. It's always great seeing Sun Wukong and the gang in another chapter on their Journey to the West. Especially now, after having watched the entirety of Lego Monkie Kid and having fun drawing comparisons. As soon as I heard Iron Fan was in this chapter, I lost it. This chapter doesn't disappoint. This story has so many moments of "well, that escalated quickly" starting from a fire mountain blocking the way, to battles between armies, to kaiju fights, and an indirect intervention from the Buddha to boost. Also, I find it's funny that sometime problems are solved because Wukong's reputation precede him, and sometimes people decided to pick fight with the only Monkey that fought the full force of Heaven and was winning.
For those who are wondering, this is chapter 61. There are a total 100 chapters.

Honestly though, it’s strangely sweet to see that the spiritual through-line of bettering oneself through Buddhism can apply to the villains too. We’ve seen a bit of it with Red Son I think, but to have a former villain decide to change their life for themselves and Sun Wukong encouraging that change by keeping to his word and returning the fan feels like some great development.

@@Bezaliel13 Well that's cos in Buddhism the different forms are varying degrees of nearing purity/enlightenment, with attaining Buddhahood when you reach enlightenment (humans are middle tier in this arrangement). That's what the whole reincarnation thing is about as well - the amount/type of karma you accumulate affects your body for the next life. Them demons and spirits, being long-lived, usually won't die and reincarnate but they can cultivate themselves and transform their existing body into a higher form.

Honestly, as someone who gets reminded of Journey to the West like, every year or so (thanks to lunar new year), I actually tune out a lot of the inbetween episodic contents, so it's really fun to rewatch it in such a simplified and modern retelling of it. Makes it so much more enjoyable than watching the usual...bad CGI drama renditions of it.

Lowkey I love Princess Iron Fan. She knew when she was outmatched but was still clever enough to trick Sun Wukong! She's surprisingly tragic for a "monster of the week" and she's done what no other monster has, which was reflecting on her life and changing for the better ON HER OWN TERMS!! No forced rehabilitation by a Bodhisattva or becoming a monk. She decided to be better and she succeeded on her own. I love that.
Her trick is even better when you consider it and the later reveal of where the fan was actually hidden together. Sun Wukong *almost* found the real fan by complete accident, which was probably *quite* a shock for Princess Iron Fan, but she managed to redirect his attention so he never realized that he actually passed the thing twice.
Please continue this series! Now that Black Myth Wukong has been out for a while I am dying for more Sarcastic Journey to the West!

I am right there with you. I'm trying to find a full version in english That is unAbridged. It's difficult because a lot of the copies of journey to the west I found Are all abridged. But 1 day I'm gonna find the full story and when I read it. I know i'm gonna hear her voice in my head as I do. And also probably hear the ball demon king sounding like kronk And the jade emperor sounding like blue Stepped on a mouse trap. I got home I loved the way he plays the jade emperor it's so cute.
I swear, the escalating levels of both your art and Wu’s storytelling are what make each episode of this series spectacular. As someone who is (largely) unfamiliar with the text, this part culminating in a kaiju battle, illustrated in such a ridiculously epic fashion, is nothing short of fucking _awesome._ Each installment is better than the last.
