    What are some of the scariest memories you have from old tv shows, video games, movies etc?

    • @netguy888
      @netguy888 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      When I was younger I was terrified of ghostface from scream I don't know why but I was really scared of him also I grew up when the original Xbox came out I had to play that on a small tv from like 1993 in a room away from my parents and pets in a spare room without the light on because the land Lord broke it and I'd play stranger wick and star wars battle front 2 and I'd those games crash or if there where no sounds coming from the Xbox it got terrifying

      I don't know if you had this show in the USA, but we did in France in the early 90's, it's called Pingu. It's a clay stop-motion show about a young pinguin who would only communicate through screams or saying NOOT-NOOT.
      There was this episode, where Pingu was having a nightmare in which he was strolling alone on the ice floe, kinda tensed but didn't really remember why... Until this huuuge mofo seal, in this disturbing clay animation way, mimicking reality but so uncanny, appears and screams with these super weird dubbed human screams.
      Oh man, the 90's weren't that innocent, it still gives me the creeps.
      EDIT: FK THAT, I just rewatched it and FK THAT it's still terrifying.

    3 things come to mind:
    1. The THX intro sound. That eerie, loud sound made me feel very uncomfortable;
    2. Nosferatu in that one episode of Spongebob Squarepants. The shift in art style, which looks like paper cutouts or something and the spooky character scared the shit out of me;
    3. The Halloween episode in 6Teen where zombies invade the mall, which felt very out of place in the overall wholesome and carefree series scared me to the point where I knew the beginning by heart, so anytime it came on I just stopped watching TV.

    What scared me as a kid was:
    - Chuckie gets The Shot in Rugrats (that scene is pretty much responsible for my fear of needles. Straight up mortified me as a kid.)
    - The Zombies from Michael Jackson's Thriller (I used to think the zombies would break into my room like they did in the end of the music video)
    - ReDead from Legend of Zelda (Whenever I was adult Link, I just used the Ocarina to warp me out of the Temple of Time, so I could avoid those ghastly moans and shrieks)
    - Wrinkly Kong from Donkey Kong 64 (obvious reasons)
    - Meeting Clanker in Banjo Kazooie (the way he stared into the camera and opens his mouth was enough to make me turn off the game)

  • @bowsmed

    The scariest things to me were always fascinating to me too. I've had thalassophobia and crippling megalophobia all my life, but I would still make my dad put on these videos of jellyfish from deep in the ocean. These jellyfish, I think they were called eggyolk jellyfish or something, were like 6 times larger than people swimming around them, and 20 times longer. I imagined myself there, totally vulnerable to be eaten or stung or whatever by a creature like that. The jellies weren't even the worst. Blobfish, colossal squids, some kind of wood lice related bug the size of your torso, in cold, dark water, with that harsh sound of the water around you moving and the wildlife just living there like it's normal, horrified me, but I couldn't look away. I was entranced by it, and eventually I liked it, and it's probably why I love horror stuff so much now.

    - the violin girl from Courage the Cowardly Dog
    - seeing posters and dvd boxart for Chucky movies and Tim Curry as Pennywise at the video store my friend’s mom would take us to. The horror section in general tbh. For a while, they had a giant poster of Chucky hanging in the air near the front of the store, so I wasn’t safe even outside of the horror section lol. As a thalassophobe with a fear of sharks, the Jaws poster art was particularly nightmarish to me
    - the Spongebob episodes “Clams” and “Procrastination”
    - Unknown from Tekken Tag Tournament and the weirdass music that plays in her stage
    - REDEADS
    - the boxart for the following games: Resident Evil (2003), Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, Twisted Metal: Black.
    - even more than the previously mentioned above, the cover art for Silent Hill 4: The Room. That ominous door covered in chains, with a corpse-like ghostly apparation crawling through the wall and screaming. I once visited a video game store around 2004 that had a huge poster of this towards the front and I was literally cowering away in terror the whole time and couldn’t stop thinking about it even when I left the store
    - Dementors from Harry Potter, as well as the shrunken head guy and the Cerberus named Fluffy
    - That bigass troll monster thing from one of the old Lord of the Rings movies. I had NIGHTMARES of being in a room with that thing
    - I’ve always had an odd fear of warnings, sirens, alarms, etc.
    When I was a kid, FBI warnings at the beginning of DVDs and “THE FOLLOWING PROGRAM CONTAINS (insert stuff here) VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED” creeped me out
    - the “G A M E O V E R” from Smash Bros Melee. Also the Brinstar Depths stage and music
    - I commonly read videogame magazines as a youth. You can imagine how I reacted to opening them up and seeing monster designs from the Silent Hill series, Resident Evil 4, and other horror titles BEFORE I WAS EVEN 10 YEARS OLD
    - those “YOU WOYLDNT STEAL A CAR” anti-piracy PSAs
    - this one global warming PSA that shows kids blankly staring into the camera and saying “tick, tick, tick” while ominous music and a ticking clock play in the background
    - honestly can’t remember if I saw this growing up or later on but I swear I did: a series of PSAs featuring people in dimly lit rooms making very menacing threats to you, with flashes and jumpscares, meant to be them portraying a stroke talking to its victim (Michael Clarke Duncan had a terrifying one)

    I dreaded going to the video store as a kid, even if it meant I'd get to rent movies and video games for myself, because of the horror movie aisle. Sometimes my parents would breeze through it and I'd have to follow them and try to avoid looking at the scary VHS sleeves staring at me. But there is ONE sleeve in particular I remember that would make me cover my eyes whenever we were close to the horror aisle, and it frustrated my parents because I wouldn't tell them why I did this. But yeah, it was the freaking Wishmaster cover (the first one). That cruel face leering RIGHT AT ME with its mouth agape and fangs showing scared me shitless.
    And today my favorite video game genre are survival horrors. Go figure.

    I’ve rarely talked to anyone else who felt the same, but the PlayStation 1 and 2 start ups scared the fuck out of me as a kid. PlayStation 1 more than anything, I used to have my mom mute the TV before I knew how a TV worked but was old enough to play games, there’s something about that tone that still gives me the shivers sometimes.
    Playstation 2 wasn’t as scary but it was just mysterious and made me uneasy. It didn’t help that our PlayStation 2 was by step brothers and he switched the langage to German accidentally before I met him. Something about the drones of the console mixed with the somewhat haunting visuals, all the different towers in an endless black expanse, combined with a completely foreign and unreadable language just gave young me the creeps.

    "... you're not perfect..."
    I remember I was in the kitchen watching courage the cowardly dog on this small TV my father placed on the fridge so he could watch his news shows while drinking beer. From my kitchen there was a door to the garage and that night my parents were working on something out there. The door to the garage was opened so I could still call for them if I needed anything. Then on the screen courage closed his eyes. It was the episode where he was in obedience school. The teacher was so harsh that courage didn't get any rest, his eyes were bloodshot. In that brief moment he nodded off that horrific asymmetrical thing appeared and in it's soft voice said "you're not perfect...". That scared the shit out of me. I'm sure I ran over to the door to garage out of fear, too scared to back to my seat. Standing in between the two rooms, I didn't want to alert my parent of how afraid I was.

    Since I've always been a gamer, the two things that have really stuck with me are also rather mundane to me now. I can't remember which came first, but one 1st grade point and click edutainment game had a sequence where if you messed up the required ingredients, a food monster would pop out momentarily. Also in the Harry Potter 2 game, Peeves poping out of some of the treasure chests made me run from the computer room where my dad was playing. Oh yeah, and there was this PSA movie on how to treat your library's books we were forced to watch in kindergarden, and the secondary character was a man who's face was the cover of a book that was being abused by all the other kids. His pinkish red painted, disembodied face on that book got me good while the rest of my class seemed unaffected...

    I was a wuss back when I was a childhood. I remember just being scared of the cutscene for the final boss of Lego Racers, Wrinkly Kong from DK64, Nosferatu in the end of SpongeBob's Graveyard Shift episode, a promo for Kimba the White Lion (off of some of my Pokemon tapes), the respective Aardman, MGM, and Paramount Video logos, Majora's Mask, the first Gremlins, the ending of The Mask, and a few episodes of either Courage and Billy & Mandy.
    Sure nowadays all what I mentioned aren't as scary as what I remembered but they sure did spook me back in the day.

    I got a big three:
    *Mars Attacks:* Overall the whole film, with the initial disintegration scene and the stampede of screaming, immolating cattle being primary examples.
    *Buffy:* No, It's not "Hush". I didn't see "Hush" until years later. It was "Go Fish!". The body horror and implications in this episode have stayed with me since I was 8.
    *???:* There was a Lifejacket Safety PSA I remember seeing multiple times on YTV until around the year 2000. Two children, a brother and sister in lifejackets, are holding each other. Sitting abandoned in a white dory in the middle of a lake. A somber violin piece plays as we pan over to what they're looking at. The bloated back of their drowned father breaks the surface of the water and bobs there in cold suspension. He isn't wearing a lifejacket. And the sun is setting.
    I can not find this PSA online.

    Who Framed Roger Rabbit when the bad guy melts in acid traumatised me as a kid.
    Lots of Disney movies like The Black Cauldron also terrified me. That one in particular was very dark for a Disney film.
    Also the dementors in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. When I was 7 to about when I was 10, every time the scene with them in the train happened, I'd stand up and hide behind my chair.

    When I was a little kid, I was scared (Like a lot) of these puzzle games called "Mistery Case Files" where you had to look for things on a still image from "Big Fish Games" I don't know why, I think it was the creppy drawing of the scenes and the suspects exaggerated expressions that made me feel uncomfortable. Ohhh your #1 reminds me of something that terrified me as a kid! The Pooh Bear doll winking at the end of a Winnie the Pooh film! It sent my toddler self into hysterics, and even today, it's a little unsettling - so I totally get it!
    Aside from that, there is a surprise death scene in a video game, "Mansion of Hidden Souls" for the Sega CD. It's a point and click adventure, and at one point, you're exploring the basement and find this long corridor. At the end of it is a statue - simplistic, man-shaped and man-sized - sitting in an alcove, doing nothing. Whatever, right? WELL. After exploring the next room and completing the objective, you now have a time limit to escape the mansion. You go back to that corridor, run to the door with your back to that statue...
    ... if you dare to stop and turn around at ANY point in that corridor, the statue is SILENTLY STANDING RIGHT BEHIND YOU. A cutscene plays, showing it walking silently up to/over you... and you have a game over.
    It's awful! I was watching my DAD play it and I had to run out of the room for the rest of the game!

    There are a few things that come to mind whenever i think of things that scared me as a kid.
    1. Spotty Bulbears from Pikmin. Specifically their appearance in Pikmin 2. Bulborbs in general are pretty scary to take on. They're big, they're mean, they can eat up your army of Pikmim pretty quickly if you're not careful, etc. Although many of rhem are always found asleep. So as long as you have a big army to fight them, then just sneak up on them and you'd be fine. Spotty Bulbears though are a different story. They never go to sleep, so there goes the whole plan on ambushing them. On top of that, they wander around too, eating any pikmin it sees in it's path, and can even wander into your own BASE. And to add more insult to injury, they're constantly found with babies following them, eating up any pikmin it somehow misses. Even more is how upon killing it, the Bulbear will start REVIVING itself. So you better carry it back to base before it comes back *(though this feature was later removed in Pikmin 3).* I remember everytime I entered a cave, I'd check every nook and cranny to see if there are any spottty bulbears. They were THAT fearsome to take on. So fearsome to the point that I didn't even fight it most of the time. I just let the other captain to distract it while I continue exploring. Even the way how it looks is just.... Uncanny. With it's stilted animations, coupled with it's enormous lips and soulles eyes... Man, it just really rubbed me the wrong way as a kid.
    2. Redeads. Specifically from Wind Waker. I remember watching my older sister play this game when we were younger. It was all well until we got to the *earth temple.* The entire atmosphere of the place already et off alarms in my head. It was dark, gloomy, void of any light, etc. But it wasn't all too "scary" outside of that. It wasn't until we stumbled upon the *redeads......* Oh god the redeads. The instant I heard it screech, I didn't run away screaming perse, but it sent chills down my spine. Not helping was how they came out of thise giant tombs which are littered everywhere in the temple. All of this info put me on-edge throughout the entire temple. Everytime a tomb opened, I was just bracing it. Expecting to see a redead in it. And whenever I didn't....... It honestly just made me feel worse. Knowing that if it wasn't in this one, then it could be in that tomb, or that tomb, or THAT tomb!!
    That's all I can think of really...

  • @daccrowell4776
    @daccrowell4776 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Scary, true...but I've got a few from my childhood that are particularly jarring. None of them involve video games, because as you know Pad, I'm horribly OLD. Nevertheless...
    1) Bloodrock's "D.O.A.". This track scared the living bejeezus out of EVERYONE when it came out in the early 1970s. There were loads of rumors floating around about it, such as it being about a real plane crash, there being the sounds of people dying mixed into it, and so on. It's a fine early example of doom metal, actually...but when a track is SO SCARY that, despite it being a Top 40 hit, DJs are warning their audiences that they're about to play it, well...
    2) One evening on WKDA-FM in Nashville, back when FM still had an underground vibe (again, early 1970s) there was this track I tuned into the middle of. There was this sort of hippy-ish not-a-groove going on, and a British voice theatrically intoning a quote from Einstein: 'Every step appears to be the unavoidable consequence of the preceding one, and in the end there beckons more and more clearly...total annihilation', with that last part being done in this terrifying Dalek-like ring-modulated voice as the rest of the band cuts loose in this totally atonal and evilly-gleeful RAMPAGE OF SHEER NOISE. At the end of it, I was shook, thinking "I never, EVER want to hear ANYTHING like that, EVER AGAIN!!!" But of course, I did...as it's "After the Flood" by Van der Graaf Generator, perhaps my FAVE prog band these days. Suffice to say, I love the track now...but THEN...hooooo!!!!
    3)...and perhaps the worst: WGU-20, also known as "The last radio station on Earth". For several years, a machine-generated voice could be clearly heard on 179 kHz, down in the longwave band, repeating something like "Good evening. This is WGU-20, a defense civil-preparedness agency station, serving the east central states with emergency information. Eastern Standard Time seventeen hours, twenty minutes, twenty seconds. Good evening. This is WGU-20, a defense civil-preparedness agency station, serving the east central states with emergency information. Eastern Standard Time seventeen hours, twenty minutes, thirty seconds. Good evening. ..." Anytime, day, night, 24/7/365. The purpose of this was also very clear at the time: if nuclear war were to break out, WGU-20 was where you would tune for direct information from the government. But its presence was anything BUT comforting, as it served as a constant reminder that all life could be wiped out at any time, so tune into WGU-20 for what you need to know immediately prior to being vaporized!

    Scary memory off hand? I was 3 and rode Snow White's Scary Adventures. Anytime I went to Disney after that, I would give the ride a wide berth which was hard because it was right there by the castle.
    I'm actually surprised to have experience with most of the things you've discussed. I guess I can only comment in a boring list way.
    1. I don't even remember that mouth in the Ardman thing and lord knows I watched those every chance they came on PBS.
    2. The video with The 39 Stairs was called Put Down The Duckie, a special that had Kermit and Oscar doing pledge drive segments when it was on TV. I recall watching it back in 1994 despite being 13.
    3. As much as I love Twilight Zone, the Dummy can go to a special place in Hell, probably in a conference room stocked with the convention attendes from well Hell.
    4. Majora's Mask is my favorite Zelda game, and I don't want to admit the Happy Mask Salesman is scary, but yeah, he's not my favorite thing.
    5. OK the Donkey is pretty disturbing.

    The aliens in Mars Attacks used to scare the fuck out if me as a kid. Those dead eyes and their creepy grimaces kept me awake at night.

    For me one of the scariest moments in my childhood, when i was elementary, i was terrified when i was playing wwf smackdown, i was using the undertaker as my wrestler in a singles match(his persona was ministry of darkness), then his ring entrance/titantron video appears in the screen of the tv there was the part of vid when he turn around he has that iconic eye rolling, it gave me the creeps, to the point i can't look in the t.v. as if that image of the undertaker stuck in my brain, and it give me difficulty in my sleep at that time.🤣🤣🤣
