Hask and Tinds are joined by a special guest this week as Matchroom MD, and the man behind some of boxing's biggest fights in the last 20 years, Eddie Hearn, drops by the studio.
They discuss Anthony Joshua’s upcoming fight on Saturday 1 April with Jermaine Franklin on DAZN, which Eddie calls the most important of AJ’s career.
Eddie also gives his verdict on how to better market rugby for the masses, tells which fighter demanded a Rolex, debates whether a Hask v Joe Marler match-up would sell out, recalls his 00s heyday at Sugar Reef and explains how he feels about people knowing him more for the No Context Hearn memes.

It’s irrelevant unless they control the whole game as he said. I don’t mind Hearn or Matchroom but they operate in fundamentally different sports- ones that are basically made up of independent contractors with grassroots an afterthought. It just wouldn’t work with rugby. What rugby actually needs is a World Rugby Commissioner appointed by all stakeholders to streamline ALL competitions (including reducing the number of games) and commercial operations.

I do find it slightly grating how Tinds and Hask somehow both seem to veiw themselves as not part of the ‘prawn sandwich crowd’. Hask went to Wellington one of the most expensive boarding schools in the country and Tindal is married to the kings niece ! The problem is, the sports the Hearn's grew up in are single player sports. "Mano a Mano". You can have uncontrollable ego's, superstars, hangers on, curating a narrative etc... Rugby is a team sport, where yes, there is room for individual brilliance, but without the other 14 players on the pitch, you'd be absolutely nothing... I agree that rugby is too sterile and that could definitely be hyped up, allowing players the room to be themselves, rather than just corporate figures. But it's a very difficult balance to find. In rugby, you're literally putting your body on the line, for your team. If Shane Warne was a rugby player, would he have been tolerated? Absolutely not! But because it's cricket, he could be managed, because the risk/reward balance favoured the maverick, whereas in Rugby, are you really going to put yourself in a hard place for an arrogant "superstar"?.
Rugby needs to go the way of field hockey with punishments as this is one of the area's that's killing the game. It's not "if" but "when" a red card is going to be given, and now at the top, it's game over... It's very simple in field hockey. Professional foul / stupid infringement / backchat = 2 minutes sideline with green card immediately. Secondary offence / more dangerous foul = 5 minutes sideline with Yellow Card. Dangerous / Reckless Foul = 10 minutes sideline with Yellow Card. Red is ONLY used for deliberate physical violence, repeat Yellow Cards and/or abusing an umpire/accusing of cheating. And field hockey is a very dangerous game. No physical contact like rugby, but with a small hard ball and long hard sticks with ball speeds of up to 160km/h and a game that is very fast, a lot can happen.
And if you have to look at something in slow motion on replay over and over again, it's not "clear and obvious". Show on-field incidents in real time, so the ref gets a sense of what is actually possible or not. You can slow down a bit if you are looking at intent, but not the action as it's ridiculous...

Commentators were constantly saying Joshua was boxing badly and I felt on edge as he kept getting caught by clusters of punches while getting trapped in the pocket. Pretty sure he won every round? @@snowyrichmond5445 what do you think getting caught means? It doesn’t mean getting stopped. Like I said, AJ had won every round up to the point he got caught. Very interesting guest.
I don't get the obsession with rugby's need for massive growth. I mean, sure, growth is necessary for clubs and all the various stakeholders to make money and for the players to get paid their fair cut from that. And yes, it does need to stay up with its competition. But the massive growth doesn't necessarily equate to success. You lose things when money takes over. You lose values, the community loses connection with players and players lose the feeling of community representation. There are other measures of success beyond numbers. I know rugby is still a long way off that but we should be careful what we wish for.

    • @mrbeeoutdoors3213

What concerns me the most is how many comments I had to scroll through to find this one!
I can totally understand these goons all wanting growth, they're past it in the sporting front and if they can still make cash off the media side of things then it makes sense... plus there is also support for retirees, injured ex players etc, but I'm surprised the fans are on board!!
Danny Cipriani the other day commenting that diving in other sports is part of the entertainment and so people shouldn't be hard on rugby players that dive etc...
I love playing rugby, but a huge part of it is the ethos surrounding it and I think we're potentially losing that...a drive for named household superstars just takes away the indepth love of the game and creates an army of acquaintance followers...
...maybe I'm too old.... never thought I'd say that in my early 30's...

@Mr Bee Outdoors have you ever seen a company (which is what rugby is fundametally), succeed when their strategy is to just carry on doing the same thing? I played rugby for decades and love the amateur ethos that goes with it (my son plays and I continue to instill the values of rugby), buy professional rugby in the UK needs a rethink to attract the younger generation to play, not just the kids that go to private school. And they need some proper hero's to look up to, and I'm afraid to say some characters that is currently missing....they are all too vanilla right now. The new rules don't help either as we are going to lose those "bad boys" that we all love to watch.

    • @mrbeeoutdoors3213
      @mrbeeoutdoors3213 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@duncanjbrown you're suggesting I think rugby should remain a company...
You're also suggesting that there is either failure or the same beaten company path... Is it not possible for a 3rd option of equilibrium? I mean we're already forcing a form of equilibrium with salary caps. Sure the reality is unless World Rugby makes the financial rules (which it won't do) then it'll be up to the independent unions to work together (which they won't do) to avoid players from moving overseas to the big bucks.
I know what I'm saying is impossible as it involves those at the top to not be the greedy assholes that they are, but the game is changing for the worst. Calling for characters is a massive demonstration of that...

bring back the rugby, what with Eddie and haskel me me me me completely fed up with this podcast. Tindell is humble but terrible everything else. Stinks of haskell thinking he is a DJ by his 'set' at twickenham (please move the track on it was boring)!

Unedifying sycophancy. Hask and Tinds trying to “geezer up” made me cringe. The ex-public school boy and the man who’s married to the 20th in line to the throne. Eye-rollingly awful. And I’m usually a fan.

Hearn is a public schoolboy! Brentwood school. Born into money his dad Barry was already successful and he just took the reins .. nepotism or not he’s lead it well. He just maintains the Essex boy schtick as nothing else will wash in the world he’s in and the main sports he promotes.

@@Alex-mj5dv Yes, no doubt that Hearn is doing his thing for credibility - no blame to him. The sad thing is the other pair trying to mirror him out of hero worship. Be yourselves! We all know Hask loves the sound of his own voice and I usually can smile at that. But trying to present himself as a modern incarnation of Lenny Maclean is hard to watch. So I stopped early.

Oh of course! I mean I expect nothing less from Haskell .. he’s been having a lifelong identity crisis and sort of found it in house music and EDM somehow. He’s as posh as Payno but rails against it.. some real form of deep self hatred going on there. Be who you are, know where you came from, and let those others judge by your character, not the caricature you portray outwardly.

Trouble is, funny as he sometimes is, Hask reeks of a guy who has had a pretty sheltered life and has got by without needing to develop that much emotional maturity which he still thinks is hilarious. You just have to read/listen to his TWO autobiographies (First one actually quite funny, Second is filled with nauseating self-praise that i honestly couldn't finish it (thankfully i paid for neither) ).
Rugby may be physically rough and character building but let's face it it's a middle class bubble. (Especially in England). Generally no one's worried about real shit(paying rent etc) after the game.
Even the way he's sitting there in his cap and shorts interrupting like an overgrown schoolboy with barely amusing anecdotes and immature quips screams manchild. And Tinds description of Ben Flowers red card as some kind of a good, "passionate" thing? Wtf .. Baffling, Cringe inducing middle class English bs the lot of it.
Anyone with any perception can tell Eddie Hearn (public school or not) has 100 times street smarts than either of them and is completely humoring them here so he can promote his AJ fight. Everytime they interrupt you can just see him thinking behind the smile: "pair of fucking mugs"
