Doing great! I’m a gemmologist based in QLD, and have been cutting and polishing stones for around 15 years.
You are finding great pieces. Usually, when fossicking for crystals you are looking for cavities, or “vugs” in the host rock (usually a granite). But it appears that there has been huge weathering and decay in this host. I’m not 100% on the geology around that area, but have been reading up on the area.
That double termination piece you found is incredible. It looks like it will be unlikely you will find any full clusters, due to how decayed the host rock is.
If you have any questions or want any help with identifications, leave a reply and I’ll post my best social account to message (don’t want to seem like I’m promoting myself/my business)

I have it on very reliable authority that there are great clusters there, just a little deeper. Apparently, according to the man who found the deposit many decades ago, the smokey always sat above the amythest clusters.
He's showed me some amazing specimens.
I'd love to pick your brains, I'm keen to learn what I can about this.

Would love to see some content of you specifically looking for and finding some jaspers and agates too.

Re the pick causing breakage, I know a few folks in my area who use a deer antler to dig for quartz. It's not hard enough to scratch the quartz nor dense enough to convey a ton of kinetic energy, but lets you get right through dirt a hell of a lot better than plastic garden tools which are also popular. If you've got a local equivalent that might work better for intact extraction. A wooden dowel carved a bit can work well too.
I'm toying with design ideas for a 3d printed clawlike thing which may have a more to purpose shape than a deer antler but with the same hardness and density range.

And if the stone is too hard, you can hit it with a hammer because the bone or wood is softer than quartz; it still won't damage the quartz, at least in my area.@@VoGusProspecting

In the middle part of the last century when the wife and I were noodling for sapphire and topaz we found some very large geodes of amethyst. We left them behind as at the time they were ONLY amethyst. There were heaps of it. Now kicking myself I returned a couple of years back but have been unable to relocate it. Indigenous land and hobby farms abound in the area now but I picked up some crystals beside the road.

I soak'em in light soap with water, then scrub the clay off. Then I soak'em in Oxalic Acid and water for a few days to remove any rust. Love your videos!

  • @jenskoppka1870

Great video Chris, and it was nice to see how much fun you had fossicking crystals. It´s a great experience and you found already at your 2nd visita lot of cool stuff in a short time, magpie instincts come up and endorphines :) I´m pretty sure that you found enough value as well, although that was not your goal but nevertheless, it does not hurt either. As others said, try to find the host rock, and be careful with any hard rock you encounter in the weathered floated soil, it could be full of crystals which unfortunately appear to be very fragile. Working with water could really help you, maybe try to get a pump spray bottle. I have seen fossickers using screw drivers and someone here suggested deer antler, maybe difficult to get in Australia :) Anyway, it was fun to watch. All the best.

  • @zorzyk6790

Sometimes you can try soiling the crystals with hydrochloric acid or nitric acid because regular washing doesn't work. However, you must take precautions and have protective clothing, gloves, and a mask. If you know where this material comes from, why don't you try to find a place with undamaged crystals growing out of the bedrock? It's probably better than picking up rotten trash that can be sold by the kilo, but I guess that's not what you mean. One carefully excavated "brush" with undamaged crystals on a piece of parent rock is worth as much as tons of that crystal debris depending on the size and beauty of the crystals. So it's worth the effort and look for the crystal treasure. True, you've found some nice things to put in your display case, but I assure you that looking for a nest with crystals is a bit of a change if you know where you can find gold in your area, but try it with real crystals.

First thing you need is a good set of stacking classifiers 1/2 1/4 and 1/8th (pan size not those little ones OR spud engineer a few stackable box shaped 😬 with a rocker bottom ) Not sure how far it is from your vehicle to the site but you need to put your classified material in buckets and put them into a tub in your vehicle the when you get to water you can correctly classify and pull out the hundreds you missed you missed at least as much as you harvested welcome to crystal fever great hall and you’ll be a pro in no time thanks for sharing see you on the next one.👍🏼👊🏼 p.s. if your allowed bring a battery operated rhoto hammer to cleave off the harder bedrock and get onto the pockets where the clear stuff is…

The tiny ones are often the nicest! Great for jewelry even if they aren't worth much on their own. Also great for gem grab bags/gem paydirt. The hard part is finding big ones (that aren't busted up) with good clarity, and that's why they fetch the big bucks.

what a day I simplly cant imagine finding that much good crystal in a year never mind a day...crystals are very rare here in the UK ...I have found sapphire and fluorite crystals in the past with the occasional small quartz crystal or cluster along the way...however Galena and fossils abound in the right areas so its all give and take depending on what catches your eye.
I would dearly love to find a deposit like that, the double terminated crystal you found is seriously good and I know of many crystal healers that would sell their granny for that one (figuratively speaking...or not in some cases lol) .

Get a whisk broom and a veggie brush to clear the wall face. Enjoy.

Nice collection of crystals ya got there. The best I have ever found was in Arkansas in the US, amazing places and finds if you can get permission to go looking...

Look up "pegmatite" and "aplite" as they both harbor "miarolitic cavities."

im enjoying the change in venue at the moment ,looks fun for sure and i know after what face book did to you; youve create new revenue streams for yourself. Please dont make this the new direction,as ive been learning so much about gold prospecting and geology and continuing technical changes. theres some of us that need your gold prospecting direction Continually. So dont forget about us. Interesting as fossicicing is ; its not the shiney stuff. looke fun for the day though. as usual your always great contant no matter the adventure.

You should try to flashlight underneath that even in the daytime you'll be able to see the light go through the crystals , even ehen they're dirty

You can use a pump sprayer full of water to clean the wall as you dig. The crystal faces will really pop, just like after rain 👍🏼

Fun Quartz fact; Purple is Amethyst, Yellow is Citrine and Green is Prasiolite (which is what happens when you heat Amethyst).

Not sure on the geology over there but across the ditch most places i have seen good gems are in pegnitie, there basically all the minerals rejected by granite as it cools and if you have voids in the pegnitite thats where the crystals form bigger the void generally bigger the crystals.
