Priceless stuff, I miss Gatlin and his brothers. Country music could really use them on the radio now. Newbury is criminally under appreciated now, as he was in his prime.
The reason the views are so few is because no one knows this is here. I have been a fan of Mickey's since about 1971. I did not know this was here until I stumbled over it this evening. Mickey wrote such wonder songs. He put words together so well you wondered why no one had said them that way before. This is great.
I worked at a TV Station a couple hours away from CHCH TV in Hamilton Ontario where this was produced. We carried the show “In Session” that they produced there. So glad I found this . It takes me back . So awesome.
I first saw MIckey at the *original* Exit In in Nashville back in 1978 when I was 17 (and underaged, but oddly wasn't carded)...I was blown away...and have been a lifelong fan ever since....
After going down a music rabbit hole after discovering Patrick Swazey could sing, I then found his "Love Hurts" duet with Larry Gatlin and was wowed by Gatlin's voice. Then, I wanted to hear more! Following the Gatlin rabbit hole, I started listening to him and the Gatlin Bros. (especially loved the short Alleluia song they did a capella(, as well as songs shared with other country artists, like "Indian Summer" and then happened upon this video. Like all of you here, I was in awe of the talent of these two men. Newbury is spellbinding, and Gatlin here is pure beauty. Just wow, where have all the good musicians gone...as Garlin sung, "Johnny Cash is dead and his house burned down." ☺
Like others here, I stumbled upon this purely by chance. What an absolute gem! Two of the greatest songwriters ever on a single stage. And at their peak, as they were here, their voices were absolutely perfect for the songs they sing. Even the clowning around was fun.
Two of the most talented guys in America who have largely slipped under the radar of most music fans. Great songwriting doesn't get much better than Mickey and Larry. My mom was a huge fan of these two legends and knew nothing about this rare session. This would have been the video of her dreams!
OMG, the longest run of goosebumps in recent memory. thank you cousin jeffy for sending me this heart-rending, heart-warming music. bless you and bless these beautiful makers and singers of song.
Glad I found this on Mickey's Birthday. Thanks to material like this, Mickey's memory lives on. Enjoyed the banter & storytelling as much as the music.
I was living in Riverside CA. At the time I first heard Mickey. this would have been around 70 or 71. I was so taken by his voice and lyrics that I bought every LP of his I could find. The were all beautiful start to finish. Mickey in my opinion is the greatest song writer in the history of country music although his music wasn't really country. If you like deep and soulful music find his CD's and buy them.

How could I forget "Sweet Memories," covered by Phil and Don Everly before they shocked my reality by diverging. "I got tired of being referred to as 'Phil or Don.'" Well, it's hare to allow those with angelic voices snd sensibilities to be human!❤
Wow! Thank you so very much for this video. I love Mickey Newbury and his music. Its hard to find video of Mickey so again, thank you very, very much for this treasure.
Half way through this video, I have come to the conclusion that I’ve missed a lot of beautiful music in my life! It’s time to check out the catalogs of both these men. And thank you for posting this!
Thanks to @gretchenpeters twitter post sending me here in June 2021. She is a fine singer songwriter who pays tribute to Mickey Newbury with an album. All new revelations to me, but glad she curated in her way.
Because people are addicted to foolishness and garbage these days. Most people that enjoy this in the USA are either older or dead and gone. I’m 52 and I don’t personally know anyone my age or younger that listens to this. It’s a shame that we’ve moved so far from this style of music; sad, really. Mickey and Larry are both from Texas, USA. Larry is now in his 70s and we lost Mickey in 2002. Mickey is, in my mind, the finest songwriter in American history. Oh, that he would have stayed away from cigarettes, we might still have him with us. I listen to him on most days; those songs are so precious, because there will not be another to finish his work.
@@hogsandsooners Great comment! I'm 44 and became a fan of both Gatlin and Newbury through my parents who were fans. These two legends wipe the floor with anyone on the charts today in the talent department . You can really hear the huge influence Mickey had on Larry in this show.
You appear to have knowledge that I don't. I just know of Gatlin's ability to write a good song and put it across. The writer of Houston, Broken Lady, and All the Gold in California is a big talent, He's also a good singer, and with his brothers, and band, can deliver a fine entertainment experience. Maybe he's a jerk, or something like that, but so is Van Morrison. That fact doesn't make Domino less catchy. I'll point out that he is most respectful of Mickey, who is obviously an inspiration to him. His attitude towards Mickey Newbury is somewhere between admiration and reverence,.So, no....I don't see the issue. @@NaturalRagman

Two great artist, two great friends writing and performing fantastic thoughtful music. Something that is missing in music today

Amazing, thank you. Let's just refer to Mickey as the finest songwriter of em all.
Mickey and Townes are two finest and that's probably the bottom line.
Mickey even brought Townes into the fold

l certainly am glad I didn't pass away before having a chance or twenty to view it.
Mickey Newbury...the best!
Great historical footage of two songwriters that influenced all of us.
I never knew how much I needed to hear Workin’ man played on an Omnichord. That AND Mickey whistling? It’s almost more that I can take.
Amazing, right? I clipped it out into its own TH-cam video: th-cam.com/video/5zcuGKyK6X4/w-d-xo.html.
Sweet Memories, Beautiful song that no one has heard, what a shame

Awesome... What's the name of the instrument at 33:13
Omnichord
no doubt this was when Gatlin still enjoyed the powder -
What is that white thing they are playing.
Suzuki Omnichord. A fun instrument that is easy to play.
the studio guys are RUBBISH
worst ever
Mick didn't deserve this
holy hell
I am sorry Mickey Newburry (greatest song writer) had to suffer Gatlin for one minute.
C'mon, Natural. He's having a good time! Is Gatlin so insufferable? Or is it you?
@@richardmindemann6935 Trust me--it's not me. It's a known fact in Nashville and the country.
