STIHL ms 400 c-m chainsaw review

  • Now that I've had a chance to run the ms400c a lot more I'm finally ready to share my thoughts and give a review of it. I'll be comparing it to the ms 362 c-m and also tell you which saws I would combine it with.
    This pro saw is perfect for forestry, lumberjacks, arborists and chainsawholics!
    I'll be making a seperate comparison video with the ms 500i.

    Even though the saw is supposedly made to start revving at high rpms while still cold you should never run high rpms until the saw has warmed up. The reason for this is the metal parts inside while cold has a little bit of slop or tolerance (which at high rpm will create piston slap that will put scratches on the piston and cylinder). Once the engine has warmed up the tolerance or slop will go away due to the metal heating up and expanding.

    Got a chance to use my 400 for the first time this weekend. Great saw! 20" bar and it chews through everything like butter. Your video helped me decide which Stihl to go with. Thanks!

    I have been wondering about the 400 for a long time but when I looked at your review i decided to get one 😊i Recieved it yesterday and just barely had the chance to try it out a little bit but I'm impressed with the power it possess and i think it's relatively light and easy to handle despite the size of it 😊 thanks bunches for a great review 😊

    I was told ten years ago when I bought my ms441cm that I shouldn't get it because itd be nothing but trouble. I've never regretted getting that saw as it's been nothing short of amazing. I live in rural West Virginia in the mountains and winter or mid summer,3500 feet up or down in the valley this saw starts and runs fantastically. I also use it with my Alaskan mill on our native white and red oak. Stihl is an expensive line of tools,but worth it in my book. These saws respond very well to opening their mufflers up too. I did mine to help dissipate heat when I was milling. Thanks for posting,I cant wait to see these here in the USA.

    Thank you! I've been trying to make an informed decision. I had my heart in the 362 non mtronic... Old dogs die hard... I am now seeing the mtronic is nothing to fear, runs better, less fuel consumption. People like you are proving to me the 400 is a no brainer. My better half is a park ranger and has tons of experience and training including the s-212 wildfire sawyer training. She's strong, yet both of us are aging and have the normal physical issues associated with being 50 years old having performed manual labor our while lives... So power to weight and smoothness are critical. Keep up the good hard work! Thank you!

    I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle th-cam.com/users/postUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.

    Chainsaw technology is constantly improving. My 362 CMQ with a 20" bar was the first one delivered in the North Eastern US and that was 6 years ago. I remember how many people were afraid to buy one because of the electronics. It only has 200 cords of firewood and a few hard days of ripping on it. So far it has been great, it makes sense that Stihl now has something better. Great video and your honesty is appreciated!

    I've been running saws for 48 years now and one of my pet peeves is how saw manufactures show a motor head weight only. Good job on weighing the saw "ready to go. That's what really matters to users. As soon as I saw 66cc, my thoughts were to the weight of that saw. Interesting about being in there with the 362 (which I have). I like your "3 saw 'lineup" . Good video.

    Excellent review, as always! A lot of us are waiting with great anticipation for the 400 to come to the states. Right now, there is such a scarcity of the professional Stihl saws in many areas. Great video review and the sound levels were fine. I'm working on getting my own solo tree service biz started soon. I'm a spry 66 year old and got my first saddle this year and have been climbing DRT and SRT. My saws are a MS290 Farm Boss that's 15 years old, but still cuts like a Boss. My climber is a Echo CS2511T. I'm looking to add a bigger saw to my herd but haven't decided on which one yet. Leaning towards the MS462. I doubt I'll take on any huge tree jobs. Keep smiling.

    • @happycamper6352
      @happycamper6352 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trade the farm boss and some extra cash for a 500i. It's similar in weight but with more power than 462. The farm boss is a respectable saw but not made for commercial use. The 462 is a solid commercial saw if you can't afford the 500i, but I'd try the 500i. You'll see that it's light enough for everyday cutting/ground work and strong enough to pull a 36" bar's chain in dense hardwood, especially if you use a semi-skip tooth or full skip tooth at that length. Once you see what that saw can do, you'll almost never need a 90cc or 120cc saw.

    Love the video, definitely made it easier to make a choice for a medium size saw. Currently I have MS 171 and that little saw is awesome. For my next medium saw I was looking between MS462 and MS500i but the weight is a big factor for me and they are more larger range. Thanks to video I am going for MS 400 C-M with 20” bar, in Australia it’s coming out in Aug/Sep this year, can’t wait.

Smaller saws my kids or wife use.. Im waiting till kinks outta mtronic. 400 is stihls first pro saw in 60cc to 70cc range in far too long.. If i didnt have to mill sometimes 400 could be my one saw.. Besides weight, how does the 400CM compare to those two saws or the MS 441C-M Magnum? Also, I like have been converting all my saws to run dual dogs with a chain catching roller mechanism. Love your videos; very down-to-earth, and fun to watch. Always enjoyable to watch a pro at work, with a bit of badass mixed in there. Might you be able to do a vid on saw selection? What makes you consider one saw over another? How do you choose between power and lightness? For someone who is only going to own maybe 2 saws, would you push a lighter saw harder with a longer bar, or a more powerful but heavier saw with a small selection of bars? Thanks in advance Felixia! You rock!

    I had a 391 and went to the 400 it seems twice as fast as the 391 I know the 391 wasn't a pro line. But it wasn't ever impressive. I have a 180 that has been amazing but I upgraded to the 261 due to less vibration on my hands. I like her videos. and I may end up getting a 661 someday.. I am grabbing an electric Sthil tomorrow for limb trimming. I wonder what she thinks of the Electric Sthil.
    Keep up the good work Hedi.

    Thanks so much for all the videos! As an intermediate rock climber I’ve been very curious about tree climbing gear (I.e. what’s different about it, what’s the same, what extra gear is required for tree climbing, etc). It would be really cool to see some videos on that.

    I'd like to see a comparison between the 400 and the 462. The ms 462 to is my favorite that's the one I'd put my money on but I'm curious and in the market for a new saw

    • @justpalms9978
      @justpalms9978 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have both. The 400 is lighter and obviously lacks the power of the 462. However, it is a monster. I use it when I know I won't need the full power of the 462.
      It's great up the tree as well being that it's lighter and not so cumbersome.

      @@Femalelumberjack It’s the perfect 2 saw plan for the Stihl users. They’re both kick ass saws. I’ve starting switching to Husqvarna though, feels like they’ve got more torque and better oilers, in other words better for the US users who run longer bars. The old Stihl saws (044, 046, 066, 088, etc.) were like this, but it seems the modern saws are more focused on the users in Europe, as they’re better balanced with shorter bars and like to rev up more than the Husqvarna saws.
