    Hi, I live in Powys and am just taking up astro with my A7 iii. After watching this several times I've just bought the Sony 24mm. You've cost me a fortune. Looking forward to learning how to use it and your vlogs have taught me a lot so thanks Alyn. I appreciate your help.

    I wish Sony would publish a roadmap of future lenses. I have zero Sony lenses because I didn't know what releases were coming. The secrecy benefits no one, and costs them sales.

      @ZeeJay 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can agree with this. However, Sony is doing as good as it is because they listen to their shooters. Because there is no road map, they probably base a lot of their lens production based on what the consumers want. This spurred not only the 24mm f1.4 GM, but also the FE 100mm f1.4GM, the FE 135mm f1.4 GM, and the soon to be 35mm 1.8 G OSS. It would be nice if they would announce things more often though for sure.

      @@ZeeJay yup, it's also nice to see that they shifted their priorities from creating lenses with super high resolution for 8k to the lenses we are seeing now, because of customer feedback

    The background of the size difference of this 2 lenses:
    Sony is dedicated to the Sony mount.
    The Samyang optical formula has to deal with the flanges of the DSLRs they support too.
    We will see more very good lenses dedicated only to mirrorless mounts especially short focal lengths.
    Definitely by the body manufacturers, may be also at some time made by the 3rd party lens manufacturers - when the DSLR market will be less important for them.

    G'day Alyn, I sold my Rokinon 24mm for this lens 2 weeks ago. Last night I got to finally test it out with a sunset and then night shots. I have to say It is very sharp. I used it on both my new a7iii and my trusty a7s for a comparison. I am still not convinced the a7iii can match the a7s for astro work but will try them out properly once I get out of the city next. Love your videos very much mate, when are you coming to Australia?

    What do you think of the Sigma 24mm compared to Sony's?

    • @davidschloss2656
      @davidschloss2656 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The sagittal coma on the 20mm is pretty bad for astro, noticeable shooting wide open of stars. There's virtually no sagittal coma on the 24mm Sony, and it's sharp edge to edge. I've shot the 24mm Sony vs. the Zeiss and the Sigma lenses, and the Sony is sharper than all of them, and lighter to boot.

    • @AlynWallace
      @AlynWallace  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've used the Sigma 20mm and 24mm but not extensively, however, I wasn't happy with the aberrations in the corner. As David mentioned, the 20mm and 24mm are bad for sagittal coma. I'd say the Sigma would be a lot sharper than the Samyang but not as sharp as the Sony (the Sigma 20mm and 24mm are also excellently sharp in the centre but not as good on the edges like the Sony). So they fall in line with their prices. Sigma is also much heavier and bigger and doesn't take standard filters.

    Never done Astro with 24mm, too tight for me. I’ve always done with either Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 (on Canon) or Sigma 14mm f/1.8 (on Sony) although I use both of them on eight camera using the Metabones adaptor. Deciding whether I should upgrade my rattly (and therefore probably decentred) Samyang 24mm on my A7iii brought me to your very watchable video. I also have the Leica 12-60mm on a GH5.
    The A7iii has a low pass filter, the GH5 doesn`t. Low light considerations aside, it makes me wonder if the potential end sharpness gains of the Sony 24mm over my Gh5 system are not hindered by the low pass filter. Whereas on the A7riii it would be more worth it. What do you think?

  • @Hangs4Fun
    @Hangs4Fun 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have the 16-35GM and 24-70GM, but I find myself carrying this the most. Maybe it's because I've only had it for a few months now and the honeymoon isn't over yet. But between the lightweight, can use filters, and it's super sharp at lowlight makes it a dream lens (pricey for a prime though).
    It does really well for video as well. When getting footage of me at camp at night doing camp chores, it almost makes it look like dusk out when its pitch black.
    Any way, I've seen several of your videos. So it's time to subscribe. I look forward to what you are able to do with this lens

      Asking if it's 'worth it' is subjective to you and your wallet but I would pick the Sony 24mm any day. Maximum aperture of 2.8 has its pitfalls, especially in vignetting and light transmission

      The shutter speed and ISO values are of no use when checking a lenses performance but were kept constant for corresponding shots. The 24mm prime would produce a much brighter image at f/2.8 than the 24-70. How the 24-70 performs in terms of abberations I have no idea though.

    • @AlynWallace
      @AlynWallace  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funny enough the sigma 14mm was made for astrophotography (one of the chief engineers at sigma is an astrophotographer). I'm not saying the Sony 24mm was made for astrophotography, although in their marketing they did mention the lack of aberrations in astro as a strong point, but just because it wasn't made for astro doesn't stop it being contender for the best landscape astro lens. Though a subjective statement to make as it depends on your personal preference of focal length

      I've used the sigma but not extensively. Without doing a direct comparison by opinion would be that the sigma would give it more competition for sharpness and detail especially in the centre. But the Sony would kill it on performance in the corners, for both sharpness and aberrations. The sigma 24mm has some heavy coma though others would find the levels acceptable especially for the price difference

  • @curatortan4118

    Bought this lens after watching this review (and read other reviews), which is disappointing, because at f2.8 my 24 GM renders the stars similarly to your Samyang in 2 corners. The coma and astigmatism are still there at f2.8. So I guess just not a lucky buy for me. I can't imagine how to convince Sony service that it is a 'faulty' lens and ask for a replacement LOL

      Definitely worth trying to return and getting a replacement because that doesn't sound right. The only other possibility is that you're not focussed accurately on the stars as that can sometimes induce/exaggerate abberrations

    Hey, great video!. I would really appreciate if you could comment on buying this lens vs the firin. I'm looking to buy the Sony and an stro lens in the next couple of weeks.

    • @AlynWallace
      @AlynWallace  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Firin is fantastically sharp, nice and small and not too heavy. My biggest issue with the Firin was that it didn't really feel like an f/2 lens because the light transmission is not great (heavy vignetting and small front element means not a lot of light gets in). It also has some pretty noticeable aberrations (coma) in the corners at f/2 and f/2.8. Still a fantastic lens but images will be noisier compared to the Sony 24mm and I didn't find a great benefit in using the Tokina over my 16-35mm f/2.8 so I'll probably be selling it soon. But that's just my fussy opinion, it's still a great lens

    • @mrcrotalusatrox1513
      @mrcrotalusatrox1513 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AlynWallace Thanks man! Interesting about the coma on the firin...I did notice nobody but stan moniz (tokina embassador) seemed to use it. The 24 seems great, but I wondered whether it would be too tight, so I thought maybe i'd go for the best 14mm or 20mm I could find. Do you ever find the 24 too tight? If you've got suggestions, i'd really appreciate it.
      Since I already have the Samyang 12mm F2 (18mm 2.8 equivalent) for my Fuji XT1, I figured i'd try to go f2 or wider for the Sony, but i suppose i'm not married to that.

    I've been using Sigma art series for a while, specially the 20mm, I think it's even better than the Sony lens.

    • @AlynWallace
      @AlynWallace  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good lenses for sure but no way better. Sony lens is lighter, smaller, takes filters, is sharper (especially in corners) and has much better control of aberrations of the stars in the corners. I was disappointed with the coma and sagittal astigmatism of the Sigma 20mm and 24mm. However, great lenses if the Sony is out of budget.

    Merhaba Alyn!
    It's very normal to compare with Samyang 24mm 1.4 but Samyang is an old lens.
    Samyang 20mm F1.8 way more sharper than Samyang 24mm f1.4
    According to result Sony excellent and Samyang 24mm sucks but I believe 20mm F1.8 better than Sony ( according to price/performance value ofcourse).

    • @AlynWallace
      @AlynWallace  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Merhaba Gökhan hos geldin :) the Samyang 24mm is definitely sharper than the 20mm, I just think my lens is a bit old and used and is not performing as well as it used to. Also it's more fair to compare 24mm f/1.4 to 24mm f/1.4 (and the fact I no longer have a Samyang 20mm), but I really hope Sony make a 20mm f/1.8 as well!

      Clearly we have very different experience.
      I used Samyang 24mm T1.5.
      Then I bought Samyang 20mm F1.8 because 24mm isn't wide enough. I can't even compare both these lenses but mine is cinematic version maybe that's why I didn't like it or it was a really bad copy.
      I'm not sure about that but I'm very happy with Samyang 20mm + A7R combination.
