Another quality VLOG Alyn. Your passion for this type of photography really shines through. Great images and really looking forward to the helicopter video!
Stupid fine photography with utterly rock star video editing and a the hattrick with gear review. I hope your YT work finds it's way as high as the stars you enjoy so much!
Fabulous work, the lens is a pure monster, I have been using the Sigma 1.4 50mm lens to capture portions of the Milky way and the images are just stunning. The level of detail and light it pulls in is phenomenal. Also no vignetting issues but the distortion of light at the outer edges is far more pronounced, although, it is a small price to pay looking at the overall shots. Excellent video and keep up the great work. :-)
Hi Alyn, Thanks for an awesome video. You might have heard that 14mm 1.8 GM is coming soon. I wish you can do the review on this lens with your astro works. Looking forward to seeing that. Cheers
The forgotten landscape lens in Full Frame mode the APS-C lens E 10-18mm F4 OSS (15-27mm) BUT in FF 12-18mm (18mm if you remove the light shield) it also has treads for filters. For night astro at 12mm f/4 you can do a 20-30s image and have the sharpest stars just like the FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS
Thank you for your video, your approach of letting the viewer take part in your workflow and the very smart analysis and comparison to the samyang pointed out important practical aspects (e.g. ease of stitching) no other video I have seen has highlighted so far. Keep up the good work. :)
I watched 3 years ago! Now Sony has made one! I was alway going wide for years to get more milky path across the sky. But have learned to do panos recently and have found that wide is not good! Would you use the new Sony 14mm f/1.8 for panos?
Haha. Loved the black hole comment. I've recently picked up the 14-24mm f2.8 and thought exactly the same thing. Bonkers glass. I was half expecting Gandalf to walk in at the start and cover the lens with a blanket.
Great vlog Alyn, that lens was something else,i couldn't believe how heavy it was . The images you captured of the milky way over Craig goch were stunning . Looking forward to your next one .
Nailed it again Alyn with some stunning images. Got a session booked at the Scottish Dark Sky Observatory in January and cant wait. Looking forward to your next vlog
Haha - the joke was nice... I'm gonna purchase that lens... as I just got myself the A7sii second hand - it's my first full frame... was looking at lenses off eBay... saw that, decided to look some reviews up... and there, you've convinced me... had not come across your channel before... i just subscribed... even more hyped that I have the same camera as you got those shots with... so thrilled to start my full frame adventures soon. Thanks for the review!
Alyn Wallace no worries pal they’re getting better every time, yeah work and other commitments just got in the way, chance of seen in the new year so back at it again. Need to save up for a camera 😂
Hi Alyn. Just found your channel and subbed. Love this VLOG. What a piece of kit this Sigma is !! Love the Elan valley and will be doing my first astro shots there this spring. Looking forward to viewing your earlier videos. Massive thanks for sharing.
Whats the BEST lens (even better than the sigma 14mm f1.8) for Milky way timelapse or even shots of orion? Also is Canon T8i or Canon 90D good for astrophotography and if so is the BEST lens able to mount on either of these Canon cameras?
Holy crap id never watched this vid and i was askin myself ok why were they shooting handheld but it mustve worked out cause they made the video... then i see its my favorite TH-cam astrophotographer, and its from 3 years ago, you look so different 😂 keep it up man you've come a long way (mean that in the best way 😂)
Love your work:) Do u think it’s worth buying now in 2022? I’m in the market for a prime for Astro and landscape, it’s still expensive, maybe there is an alternative in the same price point that u can recommend? :) Thanx
Please do a tutorial on how to process these raw files. I really want to know how you made the milky way so clean, and how you produced that sense of dreamy look with blue, purple and magenta. BTW your shooting locations are absolutely astonishing! Keep up with your good work!
andy price cheers Andy! There's lots of choice out there now, the laowa 15mm, the Irix 14mm and the newer Samyang 14mm f/2.4 to name a few that stand out
Alyn Wallace Don't put anymore equations into the mix my bank balance couldn't handle it I'll stick with my Samyang for now Brilliant work though really enjoy these vlogs
Love the video love your analysis of the lens, but I really love the van and I who is always telling bad jokes you can't beat them nice one Alyn :-))))
Alyn Wallace oh definitely and I'll make one for mine 😀 I can't believe the guy who thinks you shouldn't edit? I've just realised how much editing is part of the art 🎨 of photography keep up the great work you artist you 😊👌👍👏👏👏
Great vlog again, I don't normally bother commenting on TH-cam but this one felt deserved. I used to struggle stitching the pano's from the 14mm Samyang, but anyway I tried another last time I was shooting astro (too long ago) and I just took more frames and really minimised the movement between each one. The image stitched with so issues, might be worth a try anyway. Keep them coming!
Its due to the mustache distortion. Have the same lens and panoramas is hard for it the new Lightroom panorama function does way better then Photoshop...
Alan another great one. You have told me a few things about this lenses which I agreed with. However I am now looking for potentially another super wide for my A7RIII. I know 14mm that’s super fast is a serious physics challenge so I realize no lens will be without some issues at these specs but backing off slightly to 15mm or even 16mm, is there a super clean lens that you would shoot for Astro work instead of the Sigma. I have the Sigma and while it’s sharp I have struggling with the Coma and soft corners at even 2.8. But yea it’s damn sharp in the center and very bright. Guessing the T Stops are true to the number or maybe even better than the F stops values are.....
Hi Alyn, just found you and now 1 of your subs! I also have the Sony A7RII and A7r4 and got the Nikon 20 mm 1.8 and adapter it to my Sony e mount and this lens is said to be an awesome lens for astro, so when I got it a few months ago and I took a picture of my brick wall and the Nikon to Sony adapter and a few others and noticed on the left or right side it was softer then I think it should be so I took an Nikon to Sony adapter by Metabones and I somehow had 2 of them could see the sides softer, but on the other Metabones Nik-Sony E it was much sharper on the left and right side, so my point is some of the softness and or coma can be the adapter your using, as during normal f8 shooting you would not see that issue. So the adapter can make or brake a good native lens, too bad you did not have a Canon body to first prove the Sigma 14mm 1.8 was really sharp and less coma, then try it on the Sony with the adapter? Great work keep it up! Christopher
Just subscribed as you do decent reviews. As a fellow Brit i have noticed that the Sigma 14mm F1.8 is about £300 more expensive in the UK compared to the US! I may buy it when i go there to save a lot of cash. My other choice was the newer Rokinon SP 14mm F 2.4 but i see you haven't done a review of that yet. Have you tried it but not done a video review yet? Currently for my landscape/Astro-Landscape i am either getting one of the two lenses i already mentioned. My other general purpose lens was going to get the Tamron SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD to fit my other needs and it has a short telephoto benefit. I should note that i have only just got my first full-frame after upgrading recently to a canon 5D mk.iv My total budget is £2000 and i hope to include the Sigma 14 in that but may be swayed to the new rokinon due to its much cheaper price. You seem to know your stuff so what would be your opinion? Many Thanks
Thanks a lot John :) Haven't tried the new Rokinon yet but I have no doubt it's a brilliant lens. The older 14mm has dominated the landscape astro world for many years and is still a popular choice and I'm hearing good improvements with the newer one. The Sigma is incredible but yeah bit expensive
It obviously depends on your pulse, but I've noticed I can easily shoot 1/8 exposures handheld with a 50mm lens. When lying very still, I can shoot 1 second. And that's with a film SLR with no stabilisation. According to this and adding the a7S II' IBIS, lack of mirror slap, and low megapixel count, you could probably shoot a few seconds with no problem, without cranking the ISO to an unusable amount.
Hi Alyn Which one is better for Night time lapses- A7ii or A7Sii or A7Rii, I moved from the Canon80D to Sony A7 (rubbish for the night lapses, sold it), and now I cant choose which one is better particular for Milky Way lapses... Also the price is big deal for me A7sii I can buy slightly used for $2000 AUS, A7Rii -$2500Aus and A7II almost brand new only for $900Aus (I'm from Australia). My lapses are Ok and the lens is Samyang 14/2.8 but still not perfect, lot of noise even on 3200 ISO ((( and I decide to buy A7S ii which could help me with the noise problem.
Blown away by this! I'm not sure how ive not found your channel before now, Im trying to learn astrophotography and still struggling, subbed, great work and inspiring stuff, ps is that a Mazda bongo your using?
Awesome video - been looking for a channel like yours for a while! I also make videos at night (with varying degrees of success!) so it’s good to see another photographer doing it too 👍🏻
Love the videos Alyn, can't help but notice a lovely canvas of one of your images, if you dont mind where do you get your canvas printing done? thanks!
Diederik Borren thanks dude. I set a custom balance when I first got the camera, it's at 3300K with a little shift into the magenta. The out of box settings are a bit lacking
I think that you can get even better results :). Try this: S-LOG2 PP settings with +2.0 EV compensation manually and Uncompressed RAW. I know S-LOG is only for JPEG and video BUT :) on my A7rII there is a visible plus in using this settings for shooting RAW(.ARW) files too.
You will see that the RAW will be 2 stops underexposed when you activate SLOG. That is why you will have to raise the ISO 2 stops more. www.flickr.com/photos/simbon4o/35881747423/in/album-72157685070027831/ Take a look here :)
Enjoyed the video. Question - For your pano, are you using a gimbal? Are you bothering to try to get the nodal point set? The images look great! Really liked the shots from the overflow side! Great job all round. Subbed.
One of Alyn's really early videos .. but still so enjoyable to watch even today. Miss you heaps Alyn mate.
That water cascading over the wall and milky way above is beautiful
I come back to this video once a month and love every bit of it! Just amazing!!

I'm really glad you got that lens and can't wait to see what else you do with it.
Damn! 😆 Love your photography and videos! This is my new favorite channel!
Fabulous work, the lens is a pure monster, I have been using the Sigma 1.4 50mm lens to capture portions of the Milky way and the images are just stunning. Also no vignetting issues but the distortion of light at the outer edges is far more pronounced, although, it is a small price to pay looking at the overall shots. Alyn, first timer viewer and I can tell you your vlog made me a member. Well done.
Hi Alyn,
Thanks for an awesome video.
You might have heard that 14mm 1.8 GM is coming soon.
I wish you can do the review on this lens with your astro works.
Looking forward to seeing that.

Very inspirational, and it really does ignite one's desire to go and learn something new re-ignite ones interest in astronomy.
Thanks Andrew!
Excellent appraisal of the lenses. Amazing shots of the dam and star field.
Rob Fielding thanks a lot Rob!
Great video, I’m getting more into photography and this video makes me want to try out this lens. Thanks!
Amazing photos with the water dam! Love the videos.
Man you killed it with the first displayed dam shot. Great shots
Cheers Dan dude! Glad you like that shot prob my fave too
Loving your all vlogs mate, very informative and useful. Your pictures are mind blowing. Amazing 🔥
Thank you for your video, your approach of letting the viewer take part in your workflow and the very smart analysis and comparison to the samyang pointed out important practical aspects (e.g. ease of stitching) no other video I have seen has highlighted so far. Keep up the good work. :)
Mate your intro soundtrack is incredible🙌

Colin Jones cheers Colin dude!

Bill hillier cheers Bill man glad you enjoyed. Need to start the edit!
Whats the BEST lens (even better than the sigma 14mm f1.8) for Milky way timelapse or even shots of orion? Also is Canon T8i or Canon 90D good for astrophotography and if so is the BEST lens able to mount on either of these Canon cameras?
Curious what camera + lens you used to shoot the video of the stars since the Sigma was mounted on the camera you were carrying?
Subbed in when I seen the first dam shot with the water, epic shot
Thanks dude!
actually there is quite the same lens with this. its 15mm f2 Laowa. just got it today and search internet for what can I do with it beside astro.
The water coming over the dam is the best. What othert stunning shots have we now been deprived of?
Holy crap id never watched this vid and i was askin myself ok why were they shooting handheld but it mustve worked out cause they made the video... then i see its my favorite TH-cam astrophotographer, and its from 3 years ago, you look so different 😂 keep it up man you've come a long way (mean that in the best way 😂)
As everyone else has said, absolute class mate, loved this, I may have to invest in that 14mm. Looking forward to the next one now
Thanks a lot Steve buddy glad you enjoyed! Yeah I think 'invest' is definitely the word here haha :P
Fantastic photographs, great vlog!
Love your work:) Do u think it’s worth buying now in 2022? I’m in the market for a prime for Astro and landscape, it’s still expensive, maybe there is an alternative in the same price point that u can recommend? :)
Thanx
Great vlog, amazing pictures, awesome lens!
Thanks a lot Jerry!

Amazing content! Really enjoy watching your astro videos :)
Thanks a lot Brenden, hope you continue enjoying too :)
Impressive jobs love it!
Which setup were you using for your b roll footage of you walking around the dam when you were shooting using the sigma lens ?
Another outstanding in-depth vlog with stunning photo's another lens to add to my wish list or stick with the Samyang 14mm 2.8
andy price cheers Andy! There's lots of choice out there now, the laowa 15mm, the Irix 14mm and the newer Samyang 14mm f/2.4 to name a few that stand out
Alyn Wallace
Don't put anymore equations into the mix my bank balance couldn't handle it I'll stick with my Samyang for now
Brilliant work though really enjoy these vlogs
man the result from the dam shot was just breathtaking, I feel like I'm in college when I watch your vids haha! super knowledgeable dude
haha cheers man much appreciated
Great photos and I like the way you reviewed the lens, subbed!

Haha thanks a lot Mike dude. I should make a whats in my van video soon eh?
Alyn Wallace oh definitely and I'll make one for mine 😀 I can't believe the guy who thinks you shouldn't edit? I've just realised how much editing is part of the art 🎨 of photography keep up the great work you artist you 😊👌👍👏👏👏

Hi, have you compared this to the Sigma 14-24mm f2.8 ?
In love with your videos. Wonderful Production. Subscribed😍
Arun Hegden thanks a lot appreciate the sub too!
i love your photos they look like a dream !! cangrats... ;-)
Great video and images, very nice work 👍
Wow, beautifull.
Great stuff! I will have to live with my Samyang 14mm f2.8 for now, but you sure give me aspirations :)
Alex Berman same here (I had to send it back to sigma 😭)
Alyn Wallace so in an overall comparison, would you prefer the Sigma and pay the higher price or stick with the Samyang?
Hi Alyn. Great video and the photos...you are awesome at night photography. I would love to see some PP videos of yours!
Thanks Bakir! Yeah now I've sorted out some screen recording I'll do some PP vids as a lot of people have asked
Wonderful lens !
Great vlog again, I don't normally bother commenting on TH-cam but this one felt deserved. The image stitched with so issues, might be worth a try anyway. Keep them coming!
Cheers Tristan dude appreciate you taking the time to drop a comment :D Yeah thats a good idea if just a little more time consuming!
Its due to the mustache distortion. Have the same lens and panoramas is hard for it the new Lightroom panorama function does way better then Photoshop...
That’s amazing! Your videos are amazing
Thanks a lot Cas!
AWESOME!!!
Alan another great one. You have told me a few things about this lenses which I agreed with. However I am now looking for potentially another super wide for my A7RIII. Laowa 15m f/2 maybe. Still not perfect but still pretty good especially for size and weight
Man you're doing an awesome work! Subbed! Feel motivated to try some astro
What's the location of the damn with the waterfall and those black and red boxes on the corner of your desk?
Alyn great video! Have you tried putting the sigma 14mm +mc-11 to the a7iii? Did you have any problems? Thanks in advance!
Just subscribed as you do decent reviews. As a fellow Brit i have noticed that the Sigma 14mm F1.8 is about £300 more expensive in the UK compared to the US!
How about a comparison to the voitlander 12 mm or other voitlander wide angle lens, thanks..
Awesome work man
Luke Sarge cheers Luke dude 👊
Hi Alyn, did you ever get to try out that Samyang XP 14mm f/2.4 after??
Love your work!
Thanks a lot Elliot :D
It obviously depends on your pulse, but I've noticed I can easily shoot 1/8 exposures handheld with a 50mm lens. When lying very still, I can shoot 1 second. And that's with a film SLR with no stabilisation. According to this and adding the a7S II' IBIS, lack of mirror slap, and low megapixel count, you could probably shoot a few seconds with no problem, without cranking the ISO to an unusable amount.
You must have been a sniper in your past life :D!
great photos!
I have lent sigma 14-24mm 2.8 Art for Canon get same result quality start?
Hi Alyn
Which one is better for Night time lapses- A7ii or A7Sii or A7Rii, I moved from the Canon80D to Sony A7 (rubbish for the night lapses, sold it), and now I cant choose which one is better particular for Milky Way lapses...
Not that you suggested it but I would say A7iii :) A7S is best for noise but 12mp is not great for stills.
Hey Alyn, are you still using the Sigma lens? Thinking of getting it myself for the Sony.
Nope Sony 14mm GM f/1.8
Blown away by this! I'm not sure how ive not found your channel before now, Im trying to learn astrophotography and still struggling, subbed, great work and inspiring stuff, ps is that a Mazda bongo your using?
Thakns a lot glad you enjoyed! And yep, that's a Bongo :D
imagine that focus stacked
Awesome video - been looking for a channel like yours for a while! I also make videos at night (with varying degrees of success!) so it’s good to see another photographer doing it too 👍🏻
"I was so close to the damn wall" :D
hey man can you show us how you stitched that panorama at the end?
6:47 wow. Awesome shot
Love the videos Alyn, can't help but notice a lovely canvas of one of your images, if you dont mind where do you get your canvas printing done? thanks!
Amazing man! Insane picture quality, what is the white balance setting on your A7SII?
Diederik Borren thanks dude. I set a custom balance when I first got the camera, it's at 3300K with a little shift into the magenta. The out of box settings are a bit lacking
I think that you can get even better results :). Try this: S-LOG2 PP settings with +2.0 EV compensation manually and Uncompressed RAW.
I know S-LOG is only for JPEG and video BUT :) on my A7rII there is a visible plus in using this settings for shooting RAW(.ARW) files too.
Also for astro shots older firmwares perform much better. I have stopped updating my A7rII after the 3.20 because of the star eater issue.
PS the last shot was great :)
Simeon Kolev thanks Simon! Yes I haven't updated my A7S yet :) I didn't think slog affects RAWs but I'll try it and see, thanks
You will see that the RAW will be 2 stops underexposed when you activate SLOG. That is why you will have to raise the ISO 2 stops more.

Take a look here :)
Enjoyed the video. Question - For your pano, are you using a gimbal? Are you bothering to try to get the nodal point set? The images look great! Really liked the shots from the overflow side! Great job all round. Subbed.
Dave Burchette thanks a lot Dave. No gimbal or nodal slide but I sometimes use a nodal slide thesedays for bigger panos :)
