The yellow/brown mandolin sounds a little sweeter and the red one seems to have a deeper sound to my ears. I wonder what they would sound like cut in half and the two different halves glued together?
The mic sounds good, Wayne! The older Stanley (Don Julin's) really pops and I favor that one. But you make both sound killer! Glad you're back and posting.
Welcome back, Wayne. Gigs are good! I hear very little difference btwn the two instruments. They both sound fine. Are the strings on the new Stanley...newer?
The strings were played in on both of em. I try to make sure of that when doing a comparison like this. Strings sound best to me after about an hour of playing time.
They both sound great but I like the older Stanley better. It's more throaty and has more soul. It's voice falls easier on my ears. Since having heard them in person too, it makes a difference to me. Video and mike sound great. The strings are the best. My calluses aren't as deep since you changed the strings on mine and I love the tonal quality. Thanks for all you do buddy. It sure does have the tone. This fretboard is one of the more extreme feeling radius boards. I don't think it'll alter the sound of the instrument and you guys will be able to hear a before and after. Remember when radiused boards were incredibly rare? Now we see them all the time.
Both mandolins sound great (a great driver helps); to me, the red mandolin sounds a little rounder and more focused; the older Stanley sounds more open and traditional; enjoyed the video!
I like the older Stanley, a bit more mid-rangey sounding but my preference is bluegrass. They both sound great and the newer one has a bit more sustain to my ear. Also, tell Russell to feed you guys better. Looks like you've lost some weight. Stay safe and pick on.
Yep. The newer one does sustain longer which makes it ever so slightly less responsive on the front side of the note. That particular attribute is honestly more about feel than it is tone. You have a good ear.

Probably would sound about as good as that would look!

Thanks for the super nice comment. You've heard the newer Stanley live on the mic with 3TO as well. It sure does cut in that situation.

The way I hear it... The new one is crisp and the old one is woody sounding.
