- After a sweltering hot sunny day, Thursday July 25th, dark clouds started rolling in from the Bay of Biscay bringing gusty winds, fine rain and thunder to the later sets. This weather change did not stop the good times at Restaurant L'Etoile de Mer, a haven for connoisseurs of the finest sea food and great ambiance. Manager Emma Lahaye with her team had set a table fit for Kings and Queens, to welcome Tuba Skinny, the New Orleanians, who would electrify this cosy jazz club, adding extra spice with their hot music.
Sitting in a very tight side position, the 1st set was captured in one-go with a hand-held SONY HandyCam, HDR-XR520, in FH quality mode.
Touring France July 2019, Tuba Skinny graced this pleasant sea-side resort of Anglet, just north of Biarritz for a one-night stop-over, before heading for Andernos-les-Bains. Happy to post this footage of the complete 1st set, unedited. Enjoy! Buying two sets of their CD recordings was just a small token of our appreciation, nothing compared to all the great work Tuba Skinny does shower us with. You would go a long way to hear a finer bunch of musical artists. After listening to about 30-40 Tuba Skinny clips over a number of years, maybe more, my overwhelming preference is to listen to the tracks that were recorded in the open air. Such a clean and inclusive sound.
Interesting thought, heard them outdoors at the NC Folk Festival in Greensboro, and it just did seem to be the right setting for them. Great band, great set responding to the crowd and dancers .

@@julies1ify .......A good place to start is the corner of Royal St. and Conti around 10am not far from the Montileone Hotel 214 Royal Street, and half way up Royal St during the day. Otherwise, see them at the Spotted Cat Frenchman Street, or DBA oposite and ask them where and when they will be playing on the streets. They are very approachable, Robin Rapuzzi can always help you out, best to catch him during a break in the performance.

I really like that, regardless of the venue, country, or how prestigious an establishment is, they always dress the exact same way when they're busking.
I have enjoyed this phenomenal group of fine, and friendly people for years-have seen them several times in NOLA-which was pure joy. Erika Lewis doing 'plain voice blues', wonderful reeds and strings, washboard is great, brass is superb. Shaye Cohn(the titular leader) signals the changes so smoothly, with just a gentle swing of her cornet. In all aspects, Tuba Skinny is a truly wonderful group of extremely talented and friendly people. They are a true treasure.

Came here for 3 minutes and still here for part 2! The singer is so authentic as is the band. The band leader is hearing everything and watching the weather at the same time!
Man she is somethin' ... impeccable timing ... incredibly consistent intonation ... beautifully articulated solos that work perfectly ... and kind of brilliant direction where it seems she has the pulse of the musical pace and effect on the crowd and the ensemble and knows exactly how to keep it all fresh and moving. I credit her for much of that. Just great.

as a kid i would often think to myself that one had to be old to truly appreciate this dixie ragtime-jazz.....cut to 50 years later tapping his foot and nodding and smiling in time.
So many times Dixieland is “overplayed” for my tastes. But, these guys and so tight and each musician shows such tasteful restraint, letting each soloist shine through. Lots of space, open and airy. Erika, too, is perfect. It’s all easy on the ears and takes you to a place far away.
jysmtl I don't think they consider this Dixieland (which is more of a free-for-all). This what Jelly Roll Morton called simply New Orleans music.

Dixieland was a marketed version in Hollywood etc, this is New Orleans Jazz (or just Music) Pete Fountain played Dixieland this is closer to Sweet Emma Barret, one of the originals of New Orleans

What fantastic music coming from this group whose instruments look well used and they were bought in a pawnshop after the original owners didn't get them back. Incredible.
pawnshop? this instrument, a rare Mahillon cornet, manufactured in Brussels and after a thorough overhaul for a fortune sold to an oil baron from the Rockefeller dynasty. it was donated to the foundation that restored original New Orleans music and thus came into the hands of the famous musical family Cohn of which Shay, who now plays it, is a talented daughter and granddaughter.

Saw Tuba Skinny in 2014 on Royal St and look them up every now and then when I want a refresh of that sweet nola music. I didn't know about this tour and glad to see it.

Looking for something uplifting during quarantine. So glad to find Tuba Skinny. Thanks to each musician in this fantastic group. As a clarinetist, I could only dream to be half as good as this guy is. Inspiring, uplifting, makes me want to try “walking to New Orleans”. Just plain AWESOME!

Despite the fact that Shaye has her own instrument to play, she is totally aware of what everyone else is doing. I love the way she nods or points to the player that she next wants to be featured.
She has a once in a lifetime talent that way.

Shaye's direction is subtle, yet firm. A nod here, a look there and the players follow. Fun to watch. The music is over the top.
The big bands of the 30's-40's horn sections all had written parts. Not these cats. Incredible.

I love this group!! Erika even had a little smile for us on this one. Shaye giving cues is interesting to watch, and she runs a pretty tight ship.
As a senior citizen from Malta (google to know where this small EU country is), I love classical music and jazz but TubaSkinny is my favorite band and am awed by the ladies and all the other excellent musicians.
I can't stop listening to them. I hope they keep going forever.

@@Kanaka38 I am ashamed and disappointed to hear that. We, in the UK, should welcome them with open arms, book them, pay them well to come here and perform. I would be there for sure. Can't believe we have behaved that way to them. A huge jazz following in the UK.
@@Melvvynfirmager .....That's what I was told when talking to the band in NOLA a couple of years ago, it wouldn't take too much for the promoters in the UK to get together and arrange a UK tour, if France can do it, I'm sure we can. Forget the bottom line, present them at cost price if need be, it would help to promote New Orleans Jazz, and trad jazz in general, resulting in more interest, and in the long run, more income for the promoters.
During the past two years they have played in France and Holland many times, just a short hop across the channel, perhaps someone should start a crowd funding site to pay for their accomadation food and flights, along with transport for them to get to and from gigs.
Meanwhile, we can but dream.....

This is a really good video, the sound is good, very clear and the camera work is very good with close ups when appropriate without being too busy. And Tuba Skinny, they do a great performance. They do many of my favorites pieces. I wish I had been there.
