    The demonstration you perform at 2:07, I stumbled upon this in the yard on night only I use the lead wrist and once deep in the slot, I uncock the lead wrist straight down as fast as I can and allow the left forearm to rotate the face thru the ball. It is absolutely crazy how much speed can be generated this way. It also cures the flips. You, sir, have revealed an overlooked speed generator that I have not seen anyone else describe let alone demonstrate. Kudos to you Shawn.

    Hoagan and Nicklaus both said they like to have the back of their left hand, and palm of their right hand facing the ball at impact. Johnny Miller also said that when he was hitting his irons most solidly, is when he felt the palm of his right hand "covering the ball". How does this square to your recommendation of having the side of the hands facing the ball at impact? Looking forward to your comment.

    Hi Shawn, i have to tell you that the comparison with other sports or real life activities is one of the best way of teaching i ever seen! It's a lot easier to FEEL the sensations you describe. great job!! I came from 20 years of tennis, i've been playing golf for a year. As a tennis player i have a very good use of wrists, but my mind is educated to search the ball, expecially with arms. This is my biggest issue playing golf: i can't "pass thru" the ball and let the body leads me. I always force my arms to target the ball, so i lose a lot of power, the wrists "slap" doesn't work and my swing is rigid. How can i "reset" this instinct? How can i learn that the ball is no longer my target? Is it a matter of practice or there is some technique i can follow? Thanx

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In tennis, are you not focused on where you want to put the ball? When you serve, do you not plan on delivering into the service box on the other side? Plus, you play with spin in tennis especially on the second serve. What you need is an action or task to focus on that will deliver the ball into the picture. See “grass whip training shawn clement” video then see :throwing the club shawn clement” and then see “predict solid contact and direction shawn clement” and “how to put the ball in the way of your swing shawn clement golf wrx”

    Great lesson and I’ve improved so much following this. Still have the old habit of right elbow sticking out on backswing and left wrist scooping some before the release. Any simple way to fix this?
    Also you seem to have the club leaning back at the address and not straight between the arms. Is this to promote down blow and maybe prevent scooping?

    so are you saying to want to feel like the "blade" or club is sliding under the ball like the flat blade does....like a cutting motion under the ball? would a correct swing " feel " .... like the ball would go staight up in the air like the flat blade makes it stay there? You also bring your right elbow in front of your body enormously on your downswing. Can you elaborate more if that is intentional and how you do it. Seem like that motion would shank the ball.

      It depends on your level and what your goals are, but in general it would help. Knowing the ball flight and feel that a certain ball gives you when you are practicing will help you see that same shot with confidence on the course. I like the freedom this gives in the full swing, but how does this transition to the short game? Chipping pitching, especially putting it seems like using free wrists like this is discouraged / not used, more steering as we would say. Does wrist use increase speed/distance but reduce accuracy? The best advice I ever heard was grip as tightly as you need to grip in order to feel in control of the club. As long as it doesn't interfere with your ability to hinge and release your wrists, no problem. I wonder if Shawn agrees.

    • @golflessons
      @golflessons  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey Chris! To get a good loading of the wrists, the hands need good tone; 6 out of 10 is a good number and it won’t hinder wrists at all; we don’t want a collapse of the wrists; we want a solid wrist hinge and a proper release.

    • @adnanshoukat8966
      @adnanshoukat8966 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      A phrase i saw cleared the matter for me. ' secure grip loose wrists'.
      Furthermore its a matter of griping in the fingers more so then the palm because if the club is mmore in the palm you have to use the larger finger flexion muscles present in the forearm. Their contraction tightens up the wrists. Whereas a finger grip allows the smaller muscles within the hand to do the bulk of the work. This has minimal effect on wrist tightness.

    The bad thing about using a hammer (other coaches use this analogy) is the palm of the hand and the face of the hammer do not match each other. If the palm of the hand is facing the sky, the hammer's face is not, but on a golf club both would be facing the sky. Golf coaches should be careful with analogies. It can easily lose and confuse.

    Everything seems to be right hand right arm dominant. Fifty years ago I was taught that it was the left side that controlled the swing for right handed golfers. What gives?

      @James Fondren I don't understand. Right handers have always outnumbered lefties. Are you guys saying right handed golf clubs should have really (technically) been called left handed golf clubs (and vice versa)?

      That was the Hogan effect; if Hogan had given 60-80 lessons a week for 35 years, he would have changed many of his thoughts on how to learn golf. See my videos I did for Golf WRX’s Andrew Turskey (who is now with the PGA tour) called “backhand series shawn clement golf wrx”

      I was told that equipment, golf courses etc were designed for right handers; HORSE HOCKEY!! See the driver fitting at Ping Tour Headquarters in Phoenix where I average 308 lefty and 312 righty called “senior golf pro hits 300 yards right and left hand shawn clement”

    Im a little lost here because your slow motion swing is so different from your real swing, just a few observations...... on the downswing your elbow is pretty much pinned to your side, you're hands are inside your left thigh at impact, I'm not seeing much leading.... you say you're focused on an intermediate point but your head is over your trail foot and you appear to be looking outside your trail foot at impact, and then your head comes around after the ball is gone. Also in your slowmotion demonstration your right palm is up when you say you collect the ball but in your actual swing your right palm is more down and facing target....so at what point are you taking that cup out of the left wrist and wouldnt that be a timing issue or is it just gravity? This seems to be more of a feel verses real situation, what am I missing?

    I'm amazed at how much distance you get compared to me (my 7i is only 150 off the t) and your back swing goes no farther back than mine. Yours in this video looks like not much past 9oclock definitely not more than 10 and yet you pound your 7i 185 which I'd love to be able to do. Maybe I'm not doing as well as I think lol.

      There is about 30 yards difference between THROUGH THE BALL and AT THE BALL. What you want to look at are all the little details that will allow you to get deeper through to the target so you can whizz through that ball with ease!

    • @swisstrader
      @swisstrader 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the view that you can only tweak swing speed so much. Sean May have a swing that’s 20mph faster than yours. It’s in his DNA, so even if you were to swing exactly the same way, you would increase a little, not a lot.

      @@golflessons Thanks for the quick response Shawn. That does make sense and I had a feeling that was the case. Getting through to the target is my biggest obstacle and it's compounded by anxiety over the ball... I can swing through till the cows come home when no ball but put ball down there and look out lol. On the bright side my contact is way better and I have got more distance and spin on the ball since I started on your program but I have a feeling getting through the ball on the course on a regular basis will likely always be a problem for me cos I think the obstacle lies between my ears lol. Keep up the great work Shawn! :)

      @@swisstrader I hear ya. You're probably right on that count. Shawn's been at it a long time and I don't play so much so something has to give lol. I do have a problem getting through the ball when on the course (anxiety etc) vs when I'm just hitting balls in the basement. In the basement I can feel I'm getting "deeper" through but definitely notice hesitation and nerves on the course which leads to that quick yank from the top resulting in more of a stab at the ball. It's amazing how much one's mind can get in the way of such a simple task.

    Sorry Shawn but the grip is not a "one plane" deal. It is more than the up and down movement you profess. It is NOT like swinging a hammer. The back of my hand faces the hole at impact and not the heal of my hand or are you saying I'm doing it wrong that way?

Tiger played his best golf with a hinge...

      @@golflessons Ok. Glad you distinguish. I personally favor dorsiflexion/palmer flexion and rt elbow action only. Once a person reaches a decent level of distance potential that is. Short hitting golfers I can stomach the erratic directional control inherent to the roll method as it can generate speed with little effort and the shorter flight off line is not as penal. I taught for 30 years so like you I have my preferences.
      Plausible theory that the hinge roll method originates in childhood with strength limitations also.
      Anyway, appreciated the clarification.

      Cort Coleman As the saying goes “sarcasm is the lowest form of wit”! I take it that you have not watched many of Shawn’s videos or you would understand that cutting dandelions is simply a way to try to avoid hitting at the ball as the target, rather than hitting through to the actual target which is where you want the ball to go and how you get it there. As for advertising, like everyone, Shawn needs to make a living. Out of a 16 minute video, about 30 seconds was given over to advertising shoes, gloves and clubs. If you took the time to watch most of his terrific videos, there is no advertising at all. Know what you are talking about before criticising. By the way, this guy can hit the ball over 300 yards both right and left handed and his daughter has recently driven over 300 yards, again on video. Can you?
