Great comparisson. It shows me the reason to buy cheap normal tubes. I really don't hear a big difference. They all sound very nice and good to me. Really great guitar tone!! Maybe the difference in front of the speaker is bigger, but not so via yt.
+Frans van Helvoort Thanks for listening. I have to say yes and no. Difference between TELEFUNKEN and cheap normal tube is not so big, but the difference is your hobby itself. I work harder and harder everyday not for bread but my hobby. Of course I can't eat cheap normal tube… lol!
several vintage tubes have a (name) and it doesnt make them better per say,but in my marshall a combo of telefunkens and amperex bugle boys makes a huge difference
Cracks me up how some people think they can here the difference! Tubes do not hardly make any difference to tone, they may react slightly different ie: slightly more clean headroom than others or gain comes on earlier etc. Also the bias maybe slightly different with individual tubes here, it must be near on impossible to create a clinical setting with exact same mic placement and exact same bias settings. So that warmth you think you can here from one set of tubes is probably the bias running slightly hotter! The biggest change in tone is down to speaker choice. You can't tell me one could pick out a make of tubes in a blindfold test as they sound much the same. The opposite can be said with a speaker comparison however. Don't get hung up on tubes people, and don't waste your money on those rare NOS vintage valves!
From my experience there is more of a difference in presentation from a driver tube over the choice of power tubes in an SE tube amplifier..When you are talking about biasing a tube , you are mainly talking about a power tube,Which will substantially change the presentation of the sound, biasing an amplifier hot or cold has nothing to do with the driver.
thanks aqain for your answer. Soundparts has not got these tubes anymore. There are some re- makes .... I will listen aqain to your comparision for the second best...
Funny thing is, if you use a headphones tube amplifier that uses 12ax7 for outputs, the GE tube sounds cleaner and smoother than a Mullard does,The Mullard actually sounds sloppy
Changed my mind after extensive testing on my completely recapped 1959 bell carillon 6060 El34 amp. Extensive as in a year strait of insanity The best 12ax7 tubes I've ever used are as follows in this order and they're also obviously my favorites in this order 1) 1950s Amperex Dutch Herrleen with the D or horseshoe getter. 1956-58 are some of my favorites. Bugle boy label or not, as long as they have the Herleen slanted triangle, and the D getter, these are the best. They're in between the best examples Telefunken and Mullard. And add this little bit of sunnyness to the song. It's not a thick warmth. It's different. Highs are unbelievable with these. Pianos and stringed instruments sound unreal. Midrange and female vocals are extremely lifelike and airy. 2) Telefunken smooth plate. I still use these in the two spots right behind my Amperex. Clear, dynamic, accurate. And add a little bit of liquid reverb. Very realistic female vocals, more liquid at times 3) Very early Mullards or Mattys as I call them. Japanese Mullards. The Japanese guys made with mullard tooling are slight Thinner but also clearer because of that. 4) EI 12ax7 - Thicker sounding telefunken. And very dynamic. Bass not as tight. Vocals not as sharp. Nice tube sound. 5) Raytheon black plate. Thick and warm. Yet linear. A strange tube. Makes you want to throw on some Elvis or Beatles. Very nice for certain songs.
I have a broad selection of vintage triodes and at this moment im using telefunken smooth plates in V1,amperex bugle boy in V2 a JJ for effects loop and a sylvania GB 6201 for PI.IN a marshall 2000. the sound from my hand wired Les Paul is amazing.great video all tubes in V1,V2 and V3 are 12ax7

Since you're a collector of tubes i'm curious to know would el84 vaccum tubes be compatible with a Marshall jcm 800 2x12 4102 100 watt combo amp? They don't really inform of the size difference online and what tubes are highly recommended for certain amps. Cheers.
Theoneandonly88able Are you kids? I'm not your babysitter. Please google by yourself. I can't find 800-4102. but 800-4104. 900-4102 are you using? please study much more if you want to be gentleman.
seas- lyd Im certainly not a kid by any means. Being educated doesn't make you become a gentlemen, that is established by morals and how one is raised. It's a rare model, most people that have jcm800's combo usually have the 4104 or the 4010. Anyway, cheers
That's absolutely an amazing guitar amplifier !! I love the potted Dynaco A-430 output transformers; I use their bigger brother the Dynaco A-431 for hifi mono block amps. I really dig those "Japanese Mullards" you are using also... the Matsushita, Japan EL34s, of course. I very much enjoy the Matsushita ECC83; why no photo and sound clip of the greatest Japan ECC83?? Using Philips/Mullard plate stampers and cathode formula, those Matsushitas are great electron valves/vacuum tubes. Of course, the BEST 12AX7 ever made by anyone is the f 91 version long plate Mullard from 1958. Simply overflowing with harmonic texture and dynamics as well as micro-details. I wish the modern vacuum tubes made in Russia were better quality.. and did not all sound the same (thin and bright) It's a shame the "Mullard" 12AX7 re-issue tube from Russia is not way, way better.

The thing is, all valves will be variable in terms of gain (within a tolerance) and frequency response, so the comparison is enjoyable but futile. You could get 2 Mullard ECC83 valves and they might sound more similar as a pair than a cheaper Chinese valve purely because they British made valves in the Mullard factory were made in huge numbers in the golden age of valves whereas the Chinese ones are made to sloppier tolerances. I have 2 Mullard ECC83 valves I tried in my Fender Twin the other day and they sound identical to the one I had in V2 except they had a nasty noise floor problem with surging hissing sounds. So much for the much vaunted NOS!
This is a superb comparison. Nice to hear some of the NOS tubes that I'd never be able to afford. I liked several of the modern tubes which I hadn't really expected to. Curious what the PM stands for at 7:33. Thanks taking the time to do this test, and for sharing it with us!
Im curious about something... These tubes have very slight & delicate differences... Yet youre using a phone cam with low resolution, in a room to mic & record this?????? Dont get me wrong, youve got a cool rig, but differences arent going to be evident through a phone.
Telefunken does sound absolutely gorgeous though and is what I use for my 12ax7 tubes. I did grab some Golden dragon el34s though and they sound dam good. Especially when used with the telefunken 12ax7s
@@seaslyd 👍. Now I have Mullard Xf2s for my el34s and boy oh boy. They match up beautifully with my telefunken 12ax7s. I'm in love haha. Best el34s I've heard and imo teles are the kings of 12ax7
Nice comparison of 12ax7. My favorite is a R.C.A. black plate square getter from the fifties. That tube sings but are getting hard to find. Try one. You will not be disappointed.
Would love to almost cover a wide range of tones just using some Eq and pretty much pick selector and volume and tone pots. Big Fan of Jeff Beck' style.
Wow telefunken has such rich bass yet more articulate and present as most other tubes as well as great harmonic detail what is the exact tube you used in this comparison
What do you mean by Dark-PM for the Golden Dragon tubes? Sorry not up to speed on my abbreviations. Looking at some of these tubes so just wanted to know what they were like. Thanks, great video by the way.
thanks for your answer. I am a sound technician and I am using a senheiser HD 440 (II) and normally this headset will reveil the different in sounds. I like the most the GE 7025. Is it the original or is it a remake tube? My pre amp ( presonus dp2) you can set the tube sound to the solid state sound.( for example 30 % tube sound and 70 % solid state or 70 % tube sound and 30% solid state. That makes it difficult to choose. from holland greetings
These are original. It is not possible to avoid the 5532 op amp in the field of professional. Sound engineers like you are familiar with the sound of the vacuum tube should create great music.
Thanks, the original is to expensive and to difficult to get. I going to try : General Electric 12ax7WA ( balanced). It is mostly for Live sound.I use neumann and schoeps mic's with almost 100% silver cables. I have high end equipment witch is the best for classical music and aucoustic music.greetings from holland pier
I use tube sound for decreasing mental and physical pain. That's music therapy. Good music stimulates the hypothalamus. Vacuum tube music in particular..
I have bought this tube: General Electric NOS 12AX7WA ECC83, balanced. I use it in the PRE AMP presonus DP2 ( classic model ) and compare it with a standard tube presonus DP 2 in the new model. The classic model sound is much warmer than the standerd tube in the new model but is miss the high tones. The solutions is use them both for 1 guitar via a DI box greeting pier ( after 100 hours playing in the tubes) Probably the new model presonus is not that good compare with the old model ( old :16V new 12V)
Beautiful!! What would you recomend for a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Tremoverb? I'm about to replace tubes and service the amp. I Love cristal Clean tones and I pushed the amp to high gain some times, Mostly for coloring some songs. but Im a fan of just let the amp sing its own voice with very if not almost no effects.
+Abner Pan I recommend for Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier tremoverb tubes are NOS Raytheon black plate tubes. Next modern Tung-sol Ecc803s. These tubes have crystal clear, transparent, clean characteristic indeed.
The GE7025 is so much better than the other tubes. Is this because the GE7025 is a well played tube and the others are new? Where can you buy the GE7025; are they still producing it?
I use them after 100 hours break-in. These are NOS tubes of GE. I bought them from "sound parts Japan". www.soundparts.jp/electrontubes/voltagetubes/voltagetubes.htm
I just purchased a vintage GE 7025 long gray plate tried it with my newly retubed 70 Deluxe Reverb, had a RCA short gray plate 7025..right off I noticed the GE was louder and still warm..just went looking for more GE 7025 long black and gray plate.
Its not a huge difference between different preamp tubes but there is a difference if you have good ears and are nerdy about your tone.I have tried every tube on the planet for 30 years and my favorite are the old Mullards 161,s a great sounding tube its very natural sounding"no issues"tube. Not to much or less of anything just an even great sound.
I have been staring at those 2 hammerite cubes for over 8mins so I was'nt paying attention but I noticed my ears hurting with certain valves and a smile with others. I have an amp with 2x12ax7 and I just swapped them round and now the amp sounds great?
If you replace the tube with a German or American one, the sound will change. However, it is unpredictable whether the sound is suitable and comfortable for you. To be sure, many people like the sounds of Telefunken and Siemens.
thanks for this comparision. I use a pre amp ( presonus dp2) with one 12 ax7. I use it for a classical guitar and vocals mainly. The difference in sound in your test is hard to hear because , we hear it on this side on a mp3 level. But the telefunken is still the best??
MP3 is not bottle neck. For example, please use core-i3 3225 ATX-PC,FOSTEX-DAC and SEAS loudspeaker. The sound of the TUNG-SOL is a little long. And suitable for vocals and acoustic guitar.
That's a very strange way to position output and preamp tubes. It seems like it's just asking for feedback/hum etc. Issues lol. It looks really cool though and they are spaced a reasonable amount apart I guess.
Interesting and useful demo. I use a lot of tubes in guitar amps. To me, current tubes remain far from NOS but the Svetlana and Tung Sol are amazing, Mullard RI sounds bad to me. I find the Sylviana's a little bit thin and glassy sounding, are these JAN 12AX7WA ?
question. the 12AX7 and a ECC83, are the same tubes, i mean this are not two different tubes?? so i can put both together in the preamp section of my blackstar ht club 50?
They are the exact same tube. The two different names come from where your tubes are from (UK, Russia, etc). Thats all. If you want, you can replace a 12AX7 / ECC83 tube with these tubes which are not 12AX7s but function the same : 7025, 5751 (my preference, ECC803 and 12AY7 for a 12AX7 tube preamp circuit. Each has their own characteristic. Subtle, but it adds up.
BTW, the more that I listen those PMs sound like the Tele alot. So much that it would be hard to tell the difference I think. What are those exactly? Thanks
Thank you so much for this 12ax7 tube shootout. I own a Brunetti Mc2 60 watts all tube amp. v1 is for clear and overdrive channels, V2 for overdrive, V3 for clear and V4 for driver. If I want a cristal clear sound in clean channel and an easy breaking overdriven sound, what do you recommend using in V1, V2 and V3 ? Does the driver valve on V4 have an influence on tone ? Cheers !
frantisca I recommend to you for V1 is NOS(vintage). Especially GE five star. www.garrettaudio.com/Tube2.html Please use 5751 for low distortion clean tone. 5751:μ=70 low gain clean tone V3 (12AX7:μ=100 ) V2 μ=gain long-plate:for driver stage (powerful sound) V4 short-plate:for high-gain stage (cause of low micro phonic noise) V1 V2 Russan tubes : Bright tone ( EH SOVTEC TUNG-SOL MULLARD) JJ : Warm tone ( Long-plate JJECC803S is warmer )
seas- lyd excellent video! Could you please explain the logic of the tube parameters and sequence that are creating the sound and dynamic of the amp? I would really appreciate this!
franarmando Thanks for the question! 12AX7 / A = 12AX7 (T) = ECC83 = 7025 / A = E83CC = ECC803 / S These are compatible with 12AX7. However, there is a point that should be noted in the guitar amplifier. Microphonic noise. In audio applications, sound quality is good, 12AX7 of a large plate. You'll hear like an echo. Ei is famous.
@@seaslyd Thanks, but can't find them in my country, d you know some more tradeable/avaiable commercialy? i have preference for tubes with less gain and less treble. Sorry disturb you
Obrigado. A saída máxima é 6 W.
There is no significant sound difference. All lamps sound good. This means that replacing this element does not greatly affect the sound quality of the system. Interesting. And what can have a significant change in the quality of signal reproduction?
oooh! When I heard the Telefunken one come on, I went "**********, I need it!". Then went looking to buy one. Then stopped smiling. They're well expensive!
seas- lyd Nice, looking for a new tube for my distortion, considering Tung-Sol, EH, EH Gold, Groove Tube, Mesa, Mesa STR. So many options and can't afford to buy all of them. Can't find Telefunken or GE near me.
+Timon Oedzes These are all very similar to Ei, but sound is a little different. perhaps made by Ei, different lot. The last term of SIEMENS is made by Ei. True history.
The only true difference is de labeling. Between various decades and even between different production runs can be a difference in sound. This has nothing to do with the design, its simply the consequence of inconsequenses in the manufacturing proces.
+Timon Oedzes I do not know your purpose. Structure is slightly different. My goal is a hobby. Please somehow relax. Precious Thank you opinions. Your knowledge is great. viva de labeling! Are you sure you want to brag. lol!!

Thanks for listening!
All your pointed out correct.
This video is old experiment.
There is a plan to create a new video.
Best regards!
Telefunken does sound absolutely gorgeous though and is what I use for my 12ax7 tubes. I did grab some Golden dragon el34s though and they sound dam good. Especially when used with the telefunken 12ax7s
thanx for listening(^^♪
@@seaslyd 👍. Now I have Mullard Xf2s for my el34s and boy oh boy. They match up beautifully with my telefunken 12ax7s. I'm in love haha. Best el34s I've heard and imo teles are the kings of 12ax7
Any truth that Sovtek 12ax7 LPS is close to Telefunken?
Nice comparison of 12ax7. My favorite is a R.C.A. black plate square getter from the fifties. That tube sings but are getting hard to find. Try one. You will not be disappointed.
all right.
plz send for me! good idea!! thanx!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
im leaning towards the Mullard and the JJ... possibly the Tung Sol
ill just get all of them)
Zoits McGoity
Thank you for watching my video.
I think all of them are great. I pray that you will be happy.
Would love to almost cover a wide range of tones just using some Eq and pretty much pick selector and volume and tone pots. Big Fan of Jeff Beck' style.
+ seas-lyd
Thank you ! I will try to find the most approaching tubes. Cheers
I love the JJs, I have them in my tube compressor and when they get beat up I will again try to find JJs, they are somewhat creamier than the rest...
Ermis Adamidis
I thik so too. JJ is creamier. thanks for listening! I love JJ very much!!!

My winner is Telefunken! My tube amps are all with telefunkens! Thanks for posting!
Thanks so much!
Wow telefunken has such rich bass yet more articulate and present as most other tubes as well as great harmonic detail what is the exact tube you used in this comparison
The EH 12AX7 i bought sounded nice but lasted all of a couple minutes. Now use Tung Sol.
Please use NOS tubes(^^♪
What do you mean by Dark-PM for the Golden Dragon tubes? Sorry not up to speed on my abbreviations. Looking at some of these tubes so just wanted to know what they were like. Thanks, great video by the way.
This comment is the poem.
There is no scientific accuracy.
Thank you for listening
thanks for your answer.
I going to try :
General Electric 12ax7WA ( balanced).
+Abner Pan
I recommend for Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier tremoverb tubes are NOS Raytheon black plate tubes.
Thank you! I will go on a long trip to find it.
Svetlana, Telefunken, Ei, my favo, Way to go.
Am I missing something or am I supposed to know which tube is made by whom by Osmosis...
Click on the description for time/tube model.
You can only judge each one by the previous one used before it.
Telefunken fo shure. I am a Mullard Fanboy but usually in the power tube section because they can take alot of juice without a hiccup.
thanx for listening!
Now the question that matters the most: which tubes are the best for tight, hi gain metal rhythm work?
GE7025 thanx(^^♪
@@seaslyd Thanks.
That's a very strange way to position output and preamp tubes. It seems like it's just asking for feedback/hum etc. Issues lol. It looks really cool though and they are spaced a reasonable amount apart I guess.
Musical instrument ...
Yes, JAN 12AX7WA. I think your judgment is good.
MULLARD is preferable to break-in operation of 100 hours. Then lay down sound appears.
question. the 12AX7 and a ECC83, are the same tubes, i mean this are not two different tubes?? so i can put both together in the preamp section of my blackstar ht club 50?
They are the exact same tube. The two different names come from where your tubes are from (UK, Russia, etc). Thats all.
If you want, you can replace a 12AX7 / ECC83 tube with these tubes which are not 12AX7s but function the same : 7025, 5751 (my preference, ECC803 and 12AY7 for a 12AX7 tube preamp circuit. Each has their own characteristic. Subtle, but it adds up.
thanks again
Where is Matsushita(japanese-philips)?
Japanese Philips sure. you are tube master.
BTW, the more that I listen those PMs sound like the Tele alot. So much that it would be hard to tell the difference I think. What are those exactly? Thanks
PM is bread and butter tube i feel. not bad.
you can defonatly hear the ecco on the guitar get deeper on some of the tubes,,

Thanks for question! this is gold. I like EH (SOVTEC) very much!
Hi I would like to know what kind of amplifier are you using? I am thinking to build one my own. Thanks Garson
Cheers !
frantisca
I recommend to you for V1 is NOS(vintage). Especially GE five star.
www.garrettaudio.com/Tube2.html
Please use 5751 for low distortion clean tone.
5751:μ=70 low gain clean tone V3
(12AX7:μ=100 ) V2
μ=gain
long-plate:for driver stage (powerful sound) V4
short-plate:for high-gain stage (cause of low micro phonic noise) V1 V2
Russan tubes : Bright tone ( EH SOVTEC TUNG-SOL MULLARD)
JJ : Warm tone ( Long-plate JJECC803S is warmer )

Thanks!
question. can i put a 12AX7 (tun sol) and a ECC83 (TAD), in the pream section of my blackstar ht club 50??? or its gonna be a problem??
franarmando
Thanks for the question! Ei is famous.
ok thanks
Hi, does anyone know what version of Europa this is? Or where I can find it? Thank you!! @seas- lyd

There is no significant sound difference. All lamps sound good. This means that replacing this element does not greatly affect the sound quality of the system. Interesting. And what can have a significant change in the quality of signal reproduction?
Surprising difference.
thanks for listening!
oooh! When I heard the Telefunken one come on, I went "**********, I need it!". Then went looking to buy one. Then stopped smiling. They're well expensive!
only $200 or so for NOS
Not now.
All same sounds, no differences.

12AX7、7025、ECC83。

I agree. I will order each and install in my GSP 2101 Artist.
The Siemens, Philips and EI are all the same.
Look at the plates. They're all EI's, wich is actually a copy of the smoothplate Telefunken.
+Timon Oedzes
These are all very similar to Ei, but sound is a little different. perhaps made by Ei, different lot.
