Hey Dustin, I was already lost about 25 seconds into your video. How dose one find a humble 2x4 I looked all over and I couldn't find one humble enough. If you don't mind explaining me your process in picking out lumber. So it's humble and enthusilactic. You're assistance is really appreciated.
This is a fantastic box and your instructions are perfectly clear and easy to follow - awesome job! Once question though - why use a "spring block" instead of simply attaching the spring to the rear wall of the compartment? Wouldn't that make it easier to build as well as gain some more space in the secret drawer?
Always fun when you try to do something poorly that you normally do well (the finish). It's hard to be intentionally bad at something you've learned. Enjoyed the project.
dustin, I may be behind the eight ball here, but excellent.I love the secret compartment stuff. Teaching is the gift here, a lot of people are talented but don't have the gift to teach, you have it !
+jcngoodnews wow thank you! This was a painful video to shoot and edit. I am much more comfortable coming up with ways to tell the story without words.
I just made a very nice Tea Caddy out of Walnut and Cherry. Now my son wants a watch box, but he has lots of requirements. One of them is a secret compartment. It's going to be the mother of all watch boxes, but it needs to be done before he graduates with his PhD. Thanks for your videos. They're very helpful.
I remember hating wood glue, but now that I'm older using it does miracles. Really good looking box the wearing out process was pretty nifty to watch. I'm not the best at wood working but it's worth a go.
I just watched a couple of videos and I really like the way you do the fast forward parts. The sound while going fast is not annoying and is actually kinda funny (unlike many other fast forward videos I've seen). You show just enough to see what you're doing and then skip to the next part by cutting bits, that gives a bit of a stop motion feel to it, which I really like. Keep up the good work, both on creating cool and awesome woodwork aswell as the editing of your videos.
Hey Dustin, the whole darn project is a winner, including the voice over. The basic build ( price was right ) was well shown and someone could do the same with cherry or what ever fancy hard wood they wanted. The color is what attracted me to the video. I like it ( but that's just me ) . I got a kick out of your editing. Great job all around.
+billfromelma Absolutely! I prefer working with hardwood, but It was nice to know if I made a miscut, I wouldn't waste a bunch of expensive wood. I'm really happy with the colour too! thanks for the kind words.
I would like to say thank you for the amazing work you do.i spend hours watching your videos and I must say life passes me by lol but it's great and I do learn and learn about great tools you use in your shop.thank you Freddy from Westchester New York.
Really enjoyed the voice over and thought you did it well! I've always had a fascination with boxes and containers. Your videos are motivation for me to keep building up my shop!
Very nice work, and I learned several things on this one. Love those projects done with free/readily available wood. I just now posted a video on my channel where the customer requested pine as well as a dark brown stain and distressed look.
i wish i had your tools but i don't do to bad with my wing it bodge man approach, crafting is crafting & it's still satisfying making anything yourself
would love to see more secret compartment videos. I find it fascinating how you come up with the secret mechanisms and how to hide the compartment. Until the very end, I didn't get how it was going to be hidden, then TA DA...I got it. :) Thanks for the video.
Dustin, I was thinking if I decide to build another one of these I'll skip the metal catch altogether and just use pins to catch the drawer. it will give more room inside the drawer and you won't need to lift the inside panel completely out. The pins will hold the drawer tight to the spring and you could use 2 pins to prevent it from racking slightly in the opening.
You are 100% correct. I was mid build on my 3rd one when I realized that too. I think it's more fun to get the click when it locks in place. It's worth the little extra effort.
This box is perfect for a project I am working on but I don't have the tools needed to build it. By any chance do you sell these boxes of any of your other hidden compartment boxes?
Great job I'm always fascinated bi this type of woodworking. I'm going to try and come up with my own idea and see how it comes out. Thank you for showing us your build.
Nice. I made a much larger chest that used the same idea for the secret compartment, then I made yet another secret compartment behind the first, because I had a bit of room left after using some short drawer slides I had found in my spares collection.
I find it funny how "snobbish" people get about using pine. I happen to love the look of pine. No I wouldn't use it on everything but there are very good examples of every kind of furniture with pine being used. For a box? Pine is great. Anyway love the project.
The voice over makes the video great. I wish all guys did it. Even Jimmy Diresta is doing voice over on his videos on core77's channel, and they're awesome. Great work on the box, your video lays it out nicely, and makes me want to try making one! Great project.
+Kelsey Jones I like Jimmy's voice over because it's a commentary more than instruction. This was a challenge to get the information across in a reasonable amount of time.
True story. Either way, I like them both over just watching a build. Makes the video more interesting/entertaining as well as more personable. Nice to know a guys thought process, justification, tricks, reasoning, etc. for building it the way he/she does.
I love the birdie flip about CNC haters! Most people don't have any of these tools but you might have somebody close who has them, professional builder or another hobbyist who can lend tools or workshop for the public (or for members only). There are options. I just recently found out that there is a workshop near me with all the tools for a 10€-40€/moth cost. Before I had no knowledge of this kind of places and had a thought about workshops with memberships. Seems that someone had that thought already. And it seems that most people who whine in the internet haven't even TRYED to find solutions (applies with almost every topic and every discussion). Only options seems to be just buying everything from a shop for a full price of TOO MUCH $$$. Keep it up and advertise your local workshop or other options! Your secret compartment boxes have been cool so far. I might check other vidyas later.. :)
awsome! I have like everything besides a table saw...I want to get one of the contractor ryobi table saws because of its price. can anyone please give me advice? I have done research and some say it's good, some say it's not. obviously it's not going to out-perform these heavy duty floor saws but I just want something that will be good for home use and projects. advice?
DP, Loved this vid and I DO have the same CNC router as you so here is the question, have you ever used the gear generator in easel for something like this?? would love to hear your thoughts on that (or maybe a vid). Thanks! HT
i like the idea for the locking mechanism- it's very simple and easy to hide. but wouldn't it be easier (and give you more secret space) to leave out the spring and just open it by pulling on the drawer?
Awesome vids. A suggestion viewers may like, show the final and secret function up front, then go into the build. I find myself jumping to the end, then going to beginning to watch. Not a big deal just thought I’d share. But love the vids super cool!
If you enjoyed this video, consider checking out my Patreon page. Lots of perks, early access to my videos and no ads! Thanks!
Dustin Penner great video. Enjoyed how you narrate what you are doing. Looking forward to learning more from your videos.

I have no problem making my projects look bad, seems like you have a lot to learn.
+MaximumJonathanosity
You are funny dude. I,m like you. No problem!
That was funny !!
🤣👍
This is such a cool box. I wish I had the tools to make it. I'm gonna try and re create it with what I've got
Same here :) but those tools are like 15 salaries of mine :)
Really cool!
I like this format and the humor is a plus, but suit yourself and do what you enjoy!
+Jeremy Schmidt I'm glad some of the humour trickled through! Thank you!
I have to say the way you made it look old is genius!
Of course that's not to take away from your ingenius design. Love it.
This is a fantastic box and your instructions are perfectly clear and easy to follow - awesome job! Once question though - why use a "spring block" instead of simply attaching the spring to the rear wall of the compartment? Wouldn't that make it easier to build as well as gain some more space in the secret drawer?
Great job explaining this process. Great design you have there.
Thanks Jay! You make voice over look easy!
Always fun when you try to do something poorly that you normally do well (the finish). It's hard to be intentionally bad at something you've learned. Enjoyed the project.
Been trying to study the idea of hidden compartment boxes which has led me to your channel. This is is a pretty dope concept. Nice work 👌
Another beast, love the stop motion and other techniques, they all add to the showmanship. Great work as usual.

Thanks very much!
I don't even know what is a compartment box or what is it used for, but man! its a joy to watch this guy doing all these lovely stuff :D

my God what a masterclass of woodworking.
Wow! Just wow. Looks like my next fun project with the kid.
Really awesome build bro. loved it. youve got some great ideas and very good execution of them.
I really like the way you keep the secret compartment in its place. I might steal that for a concealed handgun compartment for my nightstand
Great description/narration on this build.
The Diresta chisel !!! One of a kind! And awesome box, I'm going to have to build that soon!

Great craftmanship

thank you +SquirtLover . Thats one of those user names I'm too afraid to ask about.
+Dustin Penner Squirt is the best soda in the history of mankind!
I liked the voice over. I do those in my videos along with subtitles...just to keep it interesting. I very much enjoyed this build. Great job.
Отличная работа ! Лучший подарок ребёнку, который читает "Остров сокровищ" ...
Nice video and now I will never look at a wood box the same way
i liked the whole thing. the project, and the production.
Just finished using your plans to make my own version of this box. It turned out great!!! Thank you so much for your wonderful design
Lost my Sh*t @ 2:42. Major props man, Kept it very enjoyable to watch. great job.
So, as they say in Canada, peace oot!
I miss you man! Please start posting videos again!!!
Very Nice! Appreciate the voice over.
Good to see the famous chisel in action.again.
You do a great job at the voice over format. It may take a little more effort at times, but the end result is a very good video.
Brilliant design, love the finished look also. I'm going to have to have a go at making one of these. Maybe one for a gift also.
Very nice work, and I learned several things on this one. Love those projects done with free/readily available wood. I just now posted a video on my channel where the customer requested pine as well as a dark brown stain and distressed look.

Planning a very involved secret compartment build right now. Just waiting on parts before I can start! Thanks!

+Bob Warren I'd love to see pictures if you have any. Thanks for watching!
+Dustin Penner I'd send pictures, but can't do it here because youtube doesn't allow them, apparently.
you can shoot me an email dpmakestuff at gmail.com
+Dustin Penner Sent, with pictures.

I like the project and enjoyed the video! Good job on both.
Awesome job! Thanks for sharing your know-how on building this kind of box.
Thanks for watching!
Hi. You have a shop very clean. I like your work. Ciao
Crazy skills and patience man!
Very cool project Dustin. Like the video format, but do whatever works for you.
Good job, Dustin. I agree that effortless sounding voiceover is NOT effortless.
LIKE A GLOVE! Great new style to the video. Its nice to hear some comments during the video, as long as its not getting too much ;) 10/10
I enjoyed watching your pretty crafty young man . Good video thank you for sharing.
That color turned out perfect
I couldnt be happier with the colour! thanks!
Really excellent, fresh format. Beautiful piece!
Question do you sell them and make them a little bit bigger I do not know nothing about working with wood but it is amazing piece
Lol the box at 11:38 sounds like Terrance and Phillip from South Park 😂
Another great build btw keep it up :)
I see you sent it to Phillip Defranco. I saw it on hos channel. Nice Box, I like it.

Your secret compartment boxes have been cool so far. I might check other vidyas later.. :)
I like it and you are very creative. Thank you for your idea
I like the new format. Good job on the whole thing Dustin!
Voice over is good for me, video is excellent and i enjoyed watching it
Большое спасибо за видео! Прострел уже много ваших работ. От куда вы берете идеи для творчества ?
Very good project. And a totally awesome video Dustin. Never knew that you had a channel. Where have I been?
wow nice work, what hand tools would you recommend for trying this if i dont have a router and a table saw?
i really like the new voiceover it gives the vid more character i n my opinion. well done! also you deserve way more subs. u are truly talented!
Great project and workmanship. Can you tell me the brand and the size of your drill press please please?
I like all projects, i have made this one to, thanks for share your ideas.
No wood working tools, but still loved this video. Well done!
I seriously want that box. It's freaking awesome! Good work man!
Good luck on the Instructables contest. looks really nice.
awesome and professional but very interesting at the same time.
great video easy to learn and follow
Your job is awesome!!!do you sell these???
Love your boxes, Im gonna try a few soon.
The talking box was a nice touch
Thank you!
Very nice ! Great project !
a perfect job! thank you for share.
awsome! I have like everything besides a table saw...I want to get one of the contractor ryobi table saws because of its price. can anyone please give me advice? any particular reason you used brass instead of a wooden dowel and thin cut wood strip for release lever?
Reliability.
DP, Loved this vid and I DO have the same CNC router as you so here is the question, have you ever used the gear generator in easel for something like this??
would love to hear your thoughts on that (or maybe a vid). Thanks! HT
nice voiceover! nice project. overall id say you did pretty good!
i like the idea for the locking mechanism- it's very simple and easy to hide. but wouldn't it be easier (and give you more secret space) to leave out the spring and just open it by pulling on the drawer?
Sure, but there is nothing as satisfying as the mildly violent pop when it lets go. Thanks
The locking mechanism means that the drawer wouldn't move or slid open if someone was turning the box around while looking at it
just discovered your videos and I love them! you're very ingenious!
love this, did you think about felting the inside of the secret compartment?
I flocked the original one. Since this one was distressed I didn't bother.
Totally BADASS! You make it look so easy too!
Great instructional video. Thanks
Thanks David!
These are so cool! Great explanation.
Your projects are amazing!
Wonderfull Technique & Great Explanation 🏆🏆🏆
The good and old spiral spring .
Bom Trabalho.....
So cool, bravo! Hope you find a way to keep these coming. New subscriber!
+Eric Mayo The list is long and growing! The only bottle neck is time!
Awesome vids. A suggestion viewers may like, show the final and secret function up front, then go into the build. I find myself jumping to the end, then going to beginning to watch. Not a big deal just thought I’d share. But love the vids super cool!
Willis Lee do you prefer to know the ending of all movies before watching them?
Wow. Seen a couple of your vids and your stuff is amazing. Nice one and thanks for sharing!
Thanks very much!
Great video and project as usual!!
very impressive. thank you for sharing
FYI: I am using various shades of shoe polish with black and it works fine. Try it sometimes for such projects.
Lots of options for distressing wood! Glad you found something that works for you!
excelente trabajo!!!. eres muy bueno!.
Dustin - really enjoyed your project. Time-wise, how long did it take to make the box? I'd like to make some for my family for Christmas. Thanks!
Waiting on glue is the biggest sap on time. If I really go hard I can build on in a day.
