I’m a first timer and really enjoyed your video. I found myself thinking about my junior high shop class. Coach Cross was a wonderful teacher. Our first assignment was a box. We couldn’t build anything without a plan/drawing and it had to be to scale. No cutting up wood without the plan and we were supervised until we could be trusted. My box took weeks and wasn’t too bad but the drawing was better. You did a somewhat complicated box without a plan/drawing and it turned out perfectly. No drawing, no measurements and a perfect damn box with fancy features. Oh btw your equipment is nice stuff too. You’ve either edited all of that stuff out or you make that damn box all the time. Regardless, I loved your video and am in awe of your work
I have that Lee Valley clamp too. When I am done with it I wrap masking tape around the pieces to keep them all together. I have made a lot of picture frames with it. It’s awesome.
After watching this video, I ordered the plans. I’m really pleased as the plans are top notch and really a bargain. I had a quick question when I downloaded the files and Justin answered right away. I look forward to building this box soon.
Dustin this is nothing short of fantastic. What a work of art as always. The improvements to the design are excellent and it shows un the end result. However you displayed several new techniques in this video that were also awesome. Very inspiring, thank you! I will be buying your plans for this one!
Lee Valley Tools makes hand tools that do simple things perfectly. I have a hard time resisting their tools that fall into the “because I want it” category. Holy cow! The grain! I think oak gets a bad image from all the 80’ and 90’s furniture that can be a little inelegant looking. This oak beautiful box madness is amazing and your use and selection and orientation really nailed it.
I subbed to your channel right after seeing the original secret compartment box video when it first came out. I've enjoyed all of your videos since then and started following you on IG last year. This new rendition is fantastic. Love the wood selection on the top, the brass accents, the inner trays, and the hidden drawer is fun. If I have to wait another 5 years to see the next iteration, it will have been worth it. 😁 Thanks for sharing!
@@retiredrookie7146 oh right! That was a "dark" but very good movie! I have not seen that in years. Thanks for reminding me! I might have to watch that now. Thanks again!
Thats Exactly what I was thinking about the Audible book but you beat me to it at the end. Great video great build I hope this box stands the test of time...!
Turned out great! You should try using a bit of paste wax on the corners during glue-ups instead of tape - the wax works perfect and doesn’t get stuck after like the tape sometimes does
Really good stuff! Love to see how you created the brass keyhole part. Excellent info there. Great work on the router to cut the slot for the bottom and save the finger joints, I haven't seen that before. I'm 5 minutes in and learned several things so far.
Great build as always man! LOVED the way the tray floated down, that's craftsmanship right there! Just signed into audible and downloaded A brief history of time, been wanting a reason to do so and you just gave me one. Thanks for sharing your talent.
I really appreciate that thank you. I finished “A briefer history of time” a while back. It’s the condensed version and the thought of a condensed version made me laugh.
Loved the finish. It really Allowed the wood to sparkle. You are right about The Count of Montecristo. Dumass (local linguistic spelling) also wrote others that are great.
Click the Audible link in the description and show them this is worth investing in. It's the only way I can afford to make more videos! Thanks very much!
Loved this project video. It also cracked me up that the only time you spoke wasn't to explain some process or what your thoughts were, but save 100 questions in the comments about where you got the unique tool.
Hey man. I loved this build so much that i made my carpenter journeyman examination piece about it. I build a endgrain Chessboard and a chest for the pieces. All mesurments had to be taken in consideration of the pieces, and since i chose pritty big ones the chest got pritty large and heavy. I build in a hidden Drawer like yours but with a simpler mechanism. In the end it resembles your chest but of a higher quality with gold inlays, root veneer and purpleheart :D Bring back some of your disigns since i loved you Jewelry box aswell :D

First of all, excellent work! I love it, Second, thanks for the recommendation, I love the movie, but have never listened to the book. It’s in my queue now! Last, love the library scene in Shawshank! Thanks for the video!
I purchased the plans. Did you use the 1.5, 2 or 3" lock? Lee valley has three choices. thanks Also, need to know the thickness on front/back and sides of box. Not mentioned in plans!
Great job. Little suggestion - making the lid look the same way as the bottom part would make it look even less conspicuous. Cause right now someone might start to think "hm... why the bottom part is so thicc?"
@@dpmakestuff I have had a few lid warp on me over the last couple of weeks. I thought it was due to bringing them into the house with a sudden heat change. But I suppose I am one of them amateurs :P Love the video and I will try to make a panel style lids from now on.
Thanks for being here, doing what you do! Please click the Audible links and check out the build plans available in the description.
Awesome! love the hidden compartment an the ending was funny 🤣🤣
The best editing I have seen on you tube. Thank you for no stupid music or continually showing simple procedures. Again good job. Jim Coyle

Beautiful job on the secret compartment box Dustin! Thank you for sharing the video with us!💖👌👍😎JP

What's the thing you're lining the interior of the box with called. My head went "felt dust", but that doesn't seem to be it.
Sort of! It's suede fibers over an adhesive.

Thank you for another build! Videography was excellent! What did you do differently to keep the lid from warping?
The original was just a solid piece of wood on top. The new one has a panel design that should prevent warping. Thanks very much!
Do you have plans for the box joint jig you used?
Not my design. Go to ibuildit.ca
Nice Nice !!
Whats that set up you pulled the sheet brass out of? What is this sorcery?
That is an amazing thing right there! The K&S Combo Rack!

I think it’s more sus to have feet in the lid. Maybe I’m confused.
Is that the John Heisz box joint jig that you are using?
It is! Very fun jig to use.
Thumbs up for the Count of Monte Cristo! Also my favorite classic of all time (and up with with best novel, period). Read the unabridged version!! :)
Yes! Those that know, know! Unabridged or don’t bother. So much of the greatness is from the subtleties and suspense.

Ah! The new disc sander gets its debut!
Yes!!! I’m glad someone noticed!
Is there a pattern and instructions available to purchase?
Yes of course. Links in the video description.
Beauty! How much?
How can you mitigate if not prevent wood warping like the lid of the previous box ?
That’s been addressed by making a panel style lid. The other lid I just glued on a solid piece of wood like an amateur.
@@dpmakestuff I have had a few lid warp on me over the last couple of weeks. I thought it was due to bringing them into the house with a sudden heat change. But I suppose I am one of them amateurs :P Love the video and I will try to make a panel style lids from now on.
