Very nice project. One suggestion - put a small piece of felt where the nails hit the sides of the box to silence them so there's no hint that something needs to move inside.
Fun little project, Drew, and a clever locking system. As for the broken belt sanding belt, all's not lost, cut it up and use it on your block sander....
My grandpa used to make wooden puzzles and used this method in one. He died right before I was born and no one else asked him how to do any of it. Thank you.
So, after the build & reveal, the best part of the video screened. Now all those who think magic happens easily in a woodshop are enlightened on what it takes to get to the finish line. Well done. Loved it
I like your style of comedy... fits my personality. Also, I know there needs to be a balance, but simple free plans like this really brings people in. IMO.
Awesome box. A long time ago I bought a small toy in Missouri that was based on this same principle. It resides in Jones Barbershop in Pensacola, FL where it continues to puzzle customers today. Young and old alike have fun with this. I plan on building this box.
When I was a kid I bought this trick piggy bank box. It was a small box with a coin slot in the top and the only thing glued was a mouse trap on the bottom. You set the trap and put the box together and insert a coin; then the mouse trap causes the sides and top to fall. lol. I thought it was cool as a kid but this is so much cooler. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Drew. This is a awesome design for a trick box. Your instructions made the build go real fast. I made a couple other centrifugal boxes with marginal success. But this one works great. I made a couple of modifications that worked well for me. On the bottom I used 1" square feet with felt on the bottom of them. I put 1 foot in the middle and doubled the felt so it was slightly higher this allows it to spin real nice. I also, cut the channels attached to the top in half and put a piece of cardstock between the halves. This prevents the rods from sliding beyond half way into the channel. The rods were occasionally not sliding out when the box was spun.
Many thanks, I've been looking for "plans for simple wood projects" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Yanathew Wood Waggler - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now )? It is a good one of a kind product for building amazing sheds and your own wood work projects without the hard work. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my mate got amazing success with it.
The way you narrate your videos makes woodworking seem not as hard I pictured it would be. I swear you're like the Bill Nye of youtube projects/tutorials. I hope 2020 will have many more to come.
I made one of these in shop class back on Middle School. Found the box while doing some spring cleaning (Quarantine!) And couldn't remember how to open it, haha. Thanks for the video! Finally got mine open.
Cool project. For this amateur wood hacker, I found it easier to make the finicky nail/bolt channels first and then add the rabbet joints on the box sides to fit & eventually sand everything down flush. Cutting 3/16" pieces of wood is a tolerance I can only approximate in my dreams.
Thanks, Loved the trick. Mostly it is magnets or levers. Also admitting that it takes a few takes in making a good a video. The tools on the wall, so neat. Grandma would be so proud of you.
Gonna build this as an element to a DnD campaign I'm planning. So cool! Looks easy enough for players to be stumped a bit by it, but easy enough for them to figure out eventually.
Worth the entire watch indeed. You said, "Didn't that turn out cool?" and I immediately responded with a, "Hell yeah it did!!!"... then I realized that I was by myself talking to my computer. If that just happened then hell yeah it turned out cool.
Theresa look in your local search for a woodworking guild and approach them to join. The basic idea is to teach people how to do woodwork, then you might just be able to make some of your own secret boxes which I think are cool! Good luck.
@@theresa_lili Not sure where in the world you are but here in Australia where I live Woodworking guilds are all over the place...as a matter of fact I belong to one here in Wauchope NSW. Its not as out of the way as you might think but we still have one. They generally foster a great atmosphere and all the members should be willing to pass on their knowledge. By the way, it isn't as hard as you might think. I can do it so there is no reason why you cannot.
Excellent video again, thanks mate, well done. If I may add just one small tip. I often have to brighten up small rods of aluminium and brass for my wooden clock projects and I found that instead of sanding them by hand, I found that I can just slip the rod, or nail in your case, into my drill press, spin it up and a light touch with some wet and dry sanding paper that bingo, instant shine. Stop the drill, flip the rod end for end and repeat light touch of sand paper and the whole rod is nicely shiny and smooth without losing more than just a teeny bit of diameter, can’t really measure, and saving myself a lot of energy trying to sand them by hand. Thank you once again for another very good video and design and please don’t take my tip as a criticism in any way, it’s just something that has helped me and hopefully will help you and others. Thanks again and ten thumbs up from old old Australia. ✔️👍🏻🇦🇺😎
Yeah, someone else mentioned that tip as well and once I read it I smacked my forehead and thought, "Why am I so dumb sometimes?" I definitely should have done that. Thanks for watching! :)
Centrifugal force! I kept looking for springs to be added to push/pull the pins, or magnetic baby-proof cabinet latches or something. Cool project! And for a larger box where it's more difficult to spin fast enough, perhaps use a nearby lazy susan? Or else, add a divot in the middle of the bottom to accept a marble, then felt-covered feet in the corners that are 1/16" shorter than the marble's diameter, so that the box slightly pivots and spins on the marble. The marble could then be stored in a top recess as part of a lid decoration.
The centrifugal force key caught me off guard. That was a great twist to a beautiful project. I'll have to try this one day. I can't wait to step up my skills
So, I've been watching wood working youtube vids for 6 years, how is that I'm only just seeing your videos now..? damn YT algorithms.. love the outtakes Drew.. ;)
Love the outtakes! Thanks for posting them :) Hard to realize sometimes that everyone has the shop snafus going on. Burning pieces and things flying around! LoL!
Drew, I've been watching your videos today and you my friend... are hilarious! Your videos are so well put together and informative, but the funny commentary and ending them all with the outtakes is awesome! Thank you for such enjoyable content!!!
Very nice project. One suggestion - put a small piece of felt where the nails hit the sides of the box to silence them so there's no hint that something needs to move inside.
Wow, this old video shows how you improved in everything, specifically extra pounds. The best channel now. Thank you and keep it up.
Thanks! Well, I've recently lost 20lbs and I plan to lose another 20. :)

Exactly what I did!
YOU WIN!!! For most tools used in DYI TH-cam video!!
In all honesty, great craftsmanship and instruction. Keep up the great work.
Thanks!
I literally gasped when he showed how to unlock it! Really cool

Clever design!! I for one would never think that centrifugal force would do the trick.
You could hint at that by leaving it on top of a Lazy Susan!
I like your style of comedy... fits my personality. Also, I know there needs to be a balance, but simple free plans like this really brings people in. IMO.
Thank you--it is a clever and elegant little box; I look forward to making one for my Grandson.
Have fun!
Wow! Your work is so pricise. Good to see a real craftsman. They are rare indeed.
Thank you very much!
I am glad you include your outtakes including the fires. Other youtubers make me feel inept with there perfect videos.

Thanks Edwin! Have fun building it
I made this and gave it to my son in law as a Christmas gift tonight. He loved it and everyone loved how the locking mechanism worked.

Really nice box and great approach to making it locking and easy to unlock.
Thanks 👍
I have started making these types of boxes for the kids in my neighborhood birthday gifts, they are so much fun to make.
Excellent workmanship.

Very nice little project 👍
Thanks!
Loved the project and the added locking system. I plan on making one. Fortunately, I have some floorboards laying around. Thanks
Go for it!
Thank you for the free plans.
You bet! Have fun
Great build. My 10 year old son has recently become obsessed with :puzzle boxes." The looks like some we could build together. Great job!!
Now I have an idea what to do with the pile of scrap hickory flooring a friend gave me!
Nicely done!
Great box idea... will give that a go soon for sure. My daughter will love it
Have fun!
Love the outtakes. They give a little reality to the build.

Brilliant no useless chatter, precise and to the point.
Love the out takes because that is what really happens

Got the plans, thanks muchly, might get sketch up one day but for now the paper plans will do! Plan to use them in my escape room scenarios!
Have fun!
Good job from a furniture maker for 54 years. Couple of things I would do differently but you did well!
Well executed my American friend. Simply stunning. Well done. Kind regards Danny UK
Thanks, Danny!
Doesn't get old Drew. :)
HA....That is GREAT. Well demonstrated and many details that I needed. GREAT JOB and Thank you.

Nice job, simple but elegant and effective design. I'll give it a try.
Awesome, have fun building it, Roger!
Gonna build this as an element to a DnD campaign I'm planning. So cool! Looks easy enough for players to be stumped a bit by it, but easy enough for them to figure out eventually.
In typical DnD fashion, after 20secs of not figuring it out someone will hurl a magic missile at it. :) Thanks, Brian!

Beautiful. I collect boxes. I have several 'secret' boxes. Wish I could do wood work. Great job!!
